Burroughs is a great asset to the community. I'm a big fan of the "Our Woven Community" program. It supports refugee women with opportunities to make and sell beautiful handbags, scarves and other items. I recently bought two tote bags as gifts for friends. The bags were lovely, unique, and each one included a biography of the woman who created it. My friends loved them! Our Woven Community doesn't have an official shop space in the Burroughs building, so I called ahead and when I got there the receptionist showed me bins full of items for sale. They also sell the products online and at craft fairs, farmers markets, etc. Half the proceeds go to the women directly, and the other half pays for supplies, equipment, and entrepreneurial skills training.

We haven't had the chance to try their eggs, but hear from friends that their eggs are great and they sell out quickly, which makes sense. Sometimes, they have fresh veggies out for sale too. It's a cash or check honor system, which is a miracle to still find these days... and something very special that every child should get to experience, understand and appreciate. When cows are out in the pasture enclosure closer to the dairy store entrance area, this is also very cool to see.

While I don't have any children and this place is pretty much irrelevant to me living in Brooklyn, I feel my different perspective could be helpful to parents and educators in the area. As it was an exhibit opening, we heard short speeches from and interacted with the people behind this organization and space. They are some pretty amazing and very passionate people. Their dedication to creating a fun and engaging space where children (and adults) can learn about the wonders of nature is extremely noble. They deserve your attention and your children deserve the educational tools they offer. I should also mention that the bee exhibit is pretty awesome. I am not much of a 'scientist' so I learned a lot of interesting facts about bees. It is put together beautifully and is highly interactive. They even made little bee costumes, so the kids will be able to dress up and act out the parts of different types of bees. The exhibit, along with supplemental information from conversations with people who take bees very seriously, also provided me with an opportunity to do some critical thinking about how human beings interact with the natural world and the unintended or ignored consequences of our actions. In summary, don't bee stupid! Take your kids to this wonderful little learning center. The television will still be there buzzing when you get home.

I reviewed and walked the premises of six different facilities and by far this establishment was the best in my opinion. There's a few reasons why, and I will explain. First off the staff, starting from Janelle and Courtney to the nurse Erin including all the aids made our family feel as though we were part of their family. It's a small establishment which I really appreciated. It made Mom feels though she was actually at home. In closing I want to give thanks to everybody at this establishment that made my mother's final days very peaceful.

It was born from one of the most tragic events in our lives, the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut in December 2012. Jesse Lewis was murdered that day, along with 19 of his first-grade classmates and six educators. Sorry for having to bring up this terrible memory, but please bear with me. We can be proud of Jesse, because he saved 9 of his friends that day. What a terrific little guy!! If I had lost a little boy like that for no good reason, I can't imagine getting out of bed in the morning. But, Jesse's mother, Scarlett Lewis, found the strength to keep moving and founded the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement. We met Scarlett Lewis at a meeting last Friday at the Lokelani Intermediate School in Kihei and we were blown away. She told us that Jesse left her a message on her chalkboard, "Norturting Helinn Love" (Nurturing, Healing Love). Quite a concept for a first grader, right? From those 3 words came this simple formula; Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action = Choosing Love. For these concepts, simple tools are available that can be used by anyone, in any situation. Providing children with these proven life skills at an early age will help them succeed in life and reduce the likelihood that they will harm one another. The program has had good results in our intermediate school and others in Hawaii. The Choose Love Movement is in all 50 states and 90 countries, impacting more than 1.5 million children. Programs are available for schools, athletic teams, at home and in the community. Our staff goes from a happy well visit, to a scared, upset, worried client for their sick fur baby with a list of issues, to the end of life discussions every day and sometimes this all happens in the span of one hour. We take what clients say to heart, we take it home, we take it to work and we deal with it daily and you should know it wears on each of us. We are not in it for the money, you can look online to see what the average pay is for a veterinarian, technician, or receptionist. We now look at each other during a difficult day and remind each other to choose love! When it's said out loud and you show a hand heart to your co-worker, guess what? You get a smile back and it is so much better then feeling alone to carry such a heavy burden of the day. Thank you Scarlett for what you are doing!
