We went there today for lunch, first in time several years. I had the German bologna and a bowl of Burgoo. First the bologna was fried way to much nearing the burnt crusty state. The Burgoo tasted like it had been sitting on the stove way to long, not quite brunt but very close. My wife's chicken lunch special was anything but special, it was fired a little long. We went for dinner. We were seated right away. It was every other table in the bar. We went specifically for brain sandwiches and they didn't have brain sandwiches. They are unable to get from their vendor at this time, which was very disappointing. We came specifically for the sandwich. We understand though. Where to start this. Extremely disappointed in my first visit. Me and my wife stopped there for lunch. Was excited because of the reviews. We were wanting a nice lunch. Sat down where a nice young waitress came and got our drink orders. This is where it all goes down hill. Another waitress came over and introduced herself and asked for our drinks. Told her the other waitress got them. She replied "obviously she did not get them this is my table." She was rude about it. The other girl brought to us. She came to take our orders. She told me it took 25 so I did not want to wait. I was ok with that. I ordered the chicken melt and wife had the club. We both orders German potatos. I should have ordered the pork brain and it still took longer that it should. She never came back and checked or let us know it was taken longer. There were only 5 tables so not busy. The other waitress filled our glasses. Heather never came out to check. Food finally came out. We got an excuse that they were working on chicken order for a catering event and it was crazy back there. After she brought the food never saw her again . Had to ask the other waitress for our check. Never have I been to a place where the waitress does not check on her tables. When she brought the food asked if we wanted a refill and could not remember what we were drinking. We were her only table. No excuses for that. Now for the food. The food was subpar. The chicken sandwich was a small chicken breast on Texas toast with cheese, bacon, onions and sauce. I had to dig to find the chicken. The bread and sauce over powered the chicken. I could not taste the chicken. The chicken should of been the star of the dish. What I did taste of the chicken did not have a lot of flavor. Needed to be seasoned more. German fries had no flavor. I would say for $9.50 not worth it. I could get a chicken sandwich like that at McDonald's (most unfavorite place). The club sandwich had a big hunk of ham and way to much bread. Pros: 1. Overall the food is pretty good, but its hit and miss. 2. Their dark meat chicken is really good 3. Friendly servers and you can usually see an owner there greeting and seating people Cons: 1. The wait staff is friendly, but the service is usually bad because the servers are forced to handle too many tables at once. Sometimes you might not see your server for a while. Sometimes they forget things because they are doing too many things at once. 2. There is no place to sit while you're waiting for a table. On busy nights people are standing by the salad bar and the table next to the door because there is no place to wait. In the summer its not so bad because there is a patio, but in the winter and during bad weather its unacceptable. 3. I like places that have a salad bar, but this one is pretty small. Some ham or turkey would be a nice addition. The salad bar comes with a lot of the steak entrees, but its a pretty hefty cost adder for the other entrees considering how small the selection on the salad bar is. Also, its not sanitary for each customer in line to cut the communal cheese block. I've seen people holding it down with their bare hands. This is not safe. Put some pre-cut blocks of cheese or don't serve it at all. 4. Their gravel parking lot needs to be paved with parking lines in order to make enough space for their customers on busy nights. 5. The bathrooms are too small. The men's bathroom on the family dining side doesn't even have a stall door. Who wants to take a dump in front of stranger? The bathroom on the bar side has tons of clutter in the entry way. Not sure if its always like that though. Bottom Line: This place is as inconsistent as they come. Sometimes you'll get a great meal and sometimes the food and service is lousy. I know the place is older than dirt, but that's no excuse for not having bathrooms, service, and a parking lot that is up to par. read more

Stopped in on Saturday afternoon, only a few tables in the place. You know I had to have the brain sandwich, which was excellent, by the way. I was a bit disappointed in the roll, but the brain itself was well battered and tasty. It's pretty big, and I got away without ordering the fries to go with it. My wife had the fried chicken, with a side of beans. She really liked the beans, and said the chicken was good, very moist, but that the crust lacked a little something (maybe spices in the flour for it?). We both had iced tea, which was really good. The Hilltop is one of my favorite places to go for comfort food. I had dinner there on a Friday evening about a week ago. First...I'm so glad they now have some craft beer! Good IPA! The server was attentive and responsive. I had the chicken livers -- one of my favorites here. They came out (with great milk gravy!) piping hot and delicious. I ordered mashed potatoes and corn as my two sides. The corn needed some kind of seasoning. It tasted like it was just right out of the can. Not good. The mashed potatoes came with milk gravy and had good flavor, but were only luke warm even after the server sent them back to be warmed up. Ah the West Side Country Club. I just wish I could go there more often. This is one of the corner stones of Evansville. My favorite thing there is either the Hilltopper Burger or a Fish Sandwich (especially during Lent). If you haven't been to the Hilltop then you are missing out on the best tavern food in Evansville.
