Stopped here for lunch on my work trip to Madison. I ordered their special, a brisket burger. While the burger and brisket was good, it was fairly "basic". There wasn't anything else on it or with it besides some BBQ sauce. That being said, the server was friendly, quick to act on anything, and the fries were delicious. On a recent visit to Hilltop I had a steak sandwich that was not an actual sandwich but the steak laid over several slices of toast. My wife ordered a chicken dish that read like it would be very good. When she received it we couldn't figure out what it was. The problem is that the cost at any restaurant is becoming outrageous. You can go to any fast food place and overpay. I would expect more from a place like Hilltop. read more

We usually hang out here one night when our group goes the Central Waters Anniversary Party. The place is a typical Wisconsin Bar/Restaurant and has a nice welcoming and comfortable vibe to it. They have a nice array of local and craft beers available from the bar. The only complaint I will lodge with this establishment is the premix for the Old Fashioned. I understand it takes time to make this libation, but your premix is not good. Make the extra effort and make them from scratch. For their food, I highly recommend the fish fry on Fridays. Its traditional beer batter, and fries, nothing special per se, but it is plenty good. Most of the menu is traditional Pub food, the fried pickles are made well, and the beer wings are good too (beer battered wings) The other issue for this establishment is Parking. Parking is terrible, the lot is small, the place is popular, plan to park someplace other than their lot if you show up during peak hours. read more

I asked for recommendations on what food was worth eating, and was told that it was all very well appreciated. I ended up eating a ribeye With the beer fries as a side and the chicken dumpling soup. Hilltop is a "typical bar and grill" as other reviewers state. However, the facilities are attractive, the outdoor seating is nice--especially in the summer, and the service is really great. Genuinely nice people. My mother and I went out for a drive the Stevens Point and ended up here. I'm actually glad the place we intended to go was closed for a holiday weekend. This was a great eating experience. My mother really enjoyed the cranberry walnut salad. It had grilled chicken and comes with a raspberry vinaigrette dressing (but you can switch that out). I got the blackened chicken Caeser salad. It was also good. The greens were fresh and crispy, the chicken was seasoned quite well. I also had a cup of the chicken creole soup. It was a bit thick, but tasty with a pleasant kick to it. If you are heading to Stevens Point and looking for a nice place for lunch, I'd give Hilltop a try. read more

I've been in town on business for a month in Stevens Point and I've been here 4 times! Derek the bartender has GREAT service, even when the place is busy. My food would always come out so quickly that on the 4th visit I timed them.. 4 minutes to get my app. And 10 minutes to get my huge plate of fish and fries! It's unreal, doesn't matter if it's 5 pm or past 7pm they're always on it! Place is clean, they are professional and respectful during this strange time we are in. Great appetizers, great burgers, great salads. This has always been a favorite lunch or dinner spot with my dad. The barrel entrance is fun. For a quick dinner and beer this was a perfect spot! It seemed like it was recently updated and was very nice and cozy inside. The beer list was very extensive with lots of Stevens Point beers on draft and New Glarus. Pretty much all the food on the menu is fried, so not easy to come to if you are trying to eat healthy. Came in for dinner while traveling in Wisconsin on a business trip at the recommendation of the front desk lady at my hotel. I sat at the bar and got much what I expected mostly guys around me and sports on tv! The food was pretty good and beers on tap were interesting. I was also pleasantly surprised that they were actually allowed to sell me Togo closed ciders as some states don't allow that and I didn't want to drink and drive. The only less than 5 star part was the bar tender. He was a little curt, not sure if he wasn't having a good day but I've never met a bar tender while traveling as a single woman who didn't at least try to engage in some conversation to make me feel comfortable. He did recommend the tenderloin sandwich the 3rd time he came by to take my order cause I couldn't decide what I wanted. I ended up getting that with chips and a side salad and a blackberry cider on tap. All were very good. I also took the angry orchard bottles back to the hotel. In this day and age of interstates, chain restaurants and homogenized sameness, it's rare to find a place to pop in for a cold beer and some great bar food without having to exit and travel into the core of a town. Gone are the days of two lane highways and roadhouses on the edge of town that were mere feet from the highway that you're traveling. For many decades, the Hilltop Bar and Grill in Stevens Point has been such an oasis and continues to be, as it's a mere block off of the Hwy 10/51/I-39 interchange. As long as I've been old enough to frequent such places (and that's quite a while...ahem), the Hilltop has been serving up their famous Friday Fish Fry, burgers and bar fare alongside 24 beers on tap. Entry to the building is through an actual wooden aging vat, retired from the Stevens Point Brewery many years ago. I've always had good service and good service is what we got last night when we popped in on our way home from a long road trip. My wife had their chicken wings (excellent and large!) and I had the Bleu Burger. It's comforting to know that there are places where you can count on a prompt, delicious meal and your expectations are never in question. There are a lot of good places to eat in Point, but if you're on the road and hungry, you can't go wrong with this choice. read more

Hilltop is a yearly bloody staple the morning of Central Waters' anniversary party. Handmade and delicious, it's about the earliest drink you can get in Point, to my knowledge. As a bloody-lover, this one is very good. The rest of their food is pretty standard bar food; some good offerings, some really greasy, gut-bomb offerings, but, overall the service has always been good to great which is worth stopping back for. The breakdown overall: Hostess- very good and nice Waitress- very attentive, friendly and prompt Food- average. Good but not over the top. Atmosphere- they have an eating area and a bar/eating area. Visited on a slow Sunday evening in late July. +1 pt because they have Spotted Cow on tap. Service was freindly and prompt. Food however was awful. Ordered the special (Sirloin) for $12.99 which also included french onion soup. Soup was mush, with croutons from a salad on top and onion that was more goo than discernible as a food product. Steak was the worst in 30 years and impossible to cut with a steak knife due to strands of sinew. On steak worse than this in my life was in Guatemala -- and that's only because it included veins with the sinew. If I return it will be for beer only. To be clear and hopefully somewhat fair, if you are out for a burger or fish fry the results might differ. But they offered up the special, so I expected that it would be the best choice tonight. read more

I went to university here in the late 80's and remember this place from back then. And have eaten here a few times when passing through the area. But tonight I really questioned my visit here. I witnessed a patron who ordered a take out dinner and never received it over a 25 minute period. When he asked for it they said it had been waiting for him because he didn't respond to the call of his name. The patron during the entire had the same spot at the bar next to us. Both my dining companion and I vouched that this Patron never had been approached that his to go order was complete. Let's be honest here, every seat at the bar is numbered just like the dining tables. Match the order to the seat number. So when we moved to our table from the bar I had grave concern and didn't trust that our credit card tab at the bar would transfer correctly. Trust is important in the restaurant business. The questions are: was the order correct? Also. did we get charged correctly and where is my credit card from the bar tab? I can say that Derek, the waiter, was cognizant of the situation we witnessed and did make every effort to make our dining experience a positive one and made sure our financial charges were correct. read more

So we ate here before the movies on Monday 7/8/19, and service was fast, and although the waitress kept phrasing questions as, "And what can I get for us tonight?", like she'd be eating with us, she was friendly and efficient. I wouldn't recommend the nachos, as they are messy and not flavorful, but our burgers were great, and you can't go wrong with the brew city fries. My biggest concern was how loud and vulgar the kitchen staff was. I could hear their inappropriate conversations, including the swear words clearly through the doors, as could the other couple eating right near the kitchen door, and it was clear they were unhappy about it. Although swear words and raunchy stories and jokes aren't a big deal for my ears, it damaged the atmosphere, and if I had kids with me, I would have left. My advice it get the burger and fries to go to avoid the kitchen staff. read more
