    Parisian high tea

High tea at Hillwood is such a treat! They have a great selection of teas and currently are offering a "Parisian tea" with fun assorted finger foods and pastries. My favorite was the raspberry scone with cherry jelly. I also ordered a mushroom sandwich with a side salad which was excellent. Our waiter was very attentive and accommodating. Note that yea reservations must be for a party of 4 or more and you will be charged within 72 hours if anyone in your party cannot attend.

A very nice cafe inside the museum. We booked tea for 10 and was catered to by our waitress with continuous water refills and tea. It came with small bites .... The beautiful flowers throughout the gardens were beautiful.

I was skeptical of the place when I got there based on the stars in reviews I saw, however their menu has both gluten free and vegetarian options that ended up having amazing flavor and presentation. While it did seem to take a bit longer than hoped for the delicacies were well worth waiting for. I would go back to the cafe in a heartbeat... even if it was just for the cafe.

OK food quality and quantity for a simple sit-down service cafe in a museum, but it is clearly overpriced which left a bad taste in our mouths, sadly (lunch for two was over $45; just 2 simple salads and tea!). The setting is fine, though the white tent was unsightly. It seemed permanent for no reason. We had no choice as we were starving. This is a very isolated area. Even worse, the bread basket was extra! Usually a cafe at this price range would offer you for free some bread and butter as you sit down. Their plates and presentation did not add any add-on value to their meals. Nothing fancy. Very simple no frills (small white plates for example) offerings. That made their price gauging even more evident. Service was kind of OK, though not top notch.

A lunch for two on Friday ( April1). The cafe just re-opened after the winter. New seasonal menu. Three interesting salads with an option to add chicken or salmon, two main entrees: polenta and grilled salmon, two soups - soup of the day ( on Friday it was tomato bisque) and borscht ( I assume inspired by Ukrainian cuisine). I love Ukrainian borscht and order this one to try. Absolutely terrible ( zero stars out of five), it is a joke. Tastes like puréed boiled beet roots with a drop of cream on top. No taste or flavors, just purred boiled beets. Insult to Ukraine. Salad with goat cheese and walnuts was very good , generous portion, interesting and tasty strawberry vinaigrette dressing ( 5 stars for salad) . Smoked salmon (main course) was good but with very wild rice - more of a decor than food so order a salad to go with it if you are hungry ( 3.5 stars for salmon). Smoked salmon toast from appetizers menu was quite good (4 stars). Good solid service ( 4 stars). Overall solid 3.5 stars . It is a better lunch option during the visit to Hillwood than a take out outdoor kiosk that serves terrible cold wraps

***2.5 stars*** Every so often, I like to treat myself to formal afternoon/high tea with friends. It's always a splurge and I can never justify the cost based on food alone. The experience is really centered around the atmosphere and service above all else. At $20 for the Royal Tea, the price was moderate but my expectations were still very high. Hillwood Estate is so luxurious and opulent, I was expecting at least a shred of it to carry over to the tea service but it did not. The cafe's decor is plain and modest and the chairs are not conducive to sitting in for 2-3 hours while you lounge, sip tea, enjoy treats and chat with friends. I went with the peach black tea. It didn't taste like it was flavored at all so in retrospect, they may have given me English breakfast by mistake. The best part of this tea which made the $20 seem that much more of a deal is that it comes with a glass of champagne, chardonnay or sherry. The champagne yesterday was Cook's and it was great. However, the cafe ran out of champagne flutes so we had to drink out of wine glasses. Yeah, seriously. A basic staple of high tea is the three-tiered plate presentation and shared with the group. Everything here came together on one plate for each individual. There was no presentation - in the center were grapes surrounded by a tarragon chicken salad on a croissant, two shortbread cookies, a strawberry, lemon tart and raspberry cake. We did not receive fresh baked mini scones, or orange marmalade and devonshire cream as advertised in the menu. Scones, marmalade and devonshire cream is another staple of tea that they totally passed over. The food and treats were ordinary and edible. There were no petits fours. You can't just serve tea, cookies and some fruit and call it afternoon tea. The waitstaff was sufficient for cafe service but it was by no means the impeccable service characteristic of tea salons. I'm glad that I had such a great time touring the estate (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hillwood-museum-and-gardens-washington#hrid:gwhEFR6vXzh8RugJh2-UoA) since you can't get access to the cafe without paying the additional $12 admission to the estate. I would have been livid if I had just come for a disappointing tea service that cost $32. Come to Hillwood, skip the tea.

Eeeehhhh, I can't say anyone should find themselves at Hillwood Cafe unless they're spending an afternoon at the Estate and didn't think to pack a lunch. They do a decent job of writing a menu heavy with Russian treats, but most everything can be reproduced by hitting up the "International" isle at your local mega mart. I thoroughly enjoyed the borsch, although my recent obsession with beets and everything made with them is more to blame than the dish itself. All the other items were forgettable and in some cases, barely even warm. Bonus points for serving Baltika beer. The service was extremely pleasant, but even slower. I think there were 2-3 servers for no more than a dozen tables, but we still had to flag someone down after 10 minutes to get our check. We were seated immediately upon walking in, so I guess there's that. The decor reminds me of a small cafeteria, more at home in a museum than then grounds of a beautiful mansion and gardens. I'd like to see them do more to make it part of the whole experience. Immerse me damnit! All this adds up to a big disappointment. Given it's location, the cafe could be so much more with just a bit of effort. It seems like they're content serving a captive customer base, which is a shame. So much potential squandered. Oh, they have free wifi if you... uh... want to surf better places to have tea??

Afternoon tea service...yummy, but ZERO food presentation. Everything is pre-plated and set in front of you like this.
    Cecilia J.

Not impressed. Ok to be fair, afternoon tea was only $15 when it is normally twice that anywhere else, my problem is this wasn't an afternoon tea service. It was more like order a plate of random pastries with a mug of tea bag tea. (Look at the picture) Poor food presentation, no lemon curd, no cream, no honey. Butter was those little single serving things you get at IHOP. Mugs were all coffee stained. The room itself looked like a conference room in my office decorated with a few poinsettias. Food was good, just don't call it afternoon tea because it is definitely not.

The white glove service, super crisp clean and whimsical ambiance, mixed with an array of interesting treats made for an incredible experience. There were many people having a girls day, out with their daughters, and even having high tea as a family. Even if you don't know anything about tea, the servers there are super knowledgeable and will guide you through the process. Starting with the hand towel (so cool!) you begin feeling relaxed and refreshed. I chose to start off with the Gen Maicha, which had a delightful popcorn taste I couldn't get enough of! For my cocktail, I chose a simple bubby rose', but my friends said their cherry blossom flavored tea inspired cocktail was amazing. As you can see, they did not cut any corners with the high tea treats, which ranged from savory to sweet. The peppery pink spread for the scone was one of my favorites. The playfulness of the colors, perfection of the shapes, and subtle but perfect flavors all engaged the senses. I cannot wait to return. For the price point, this high tea was incredible. I don't recommend ordering any type of waffles, it came out cold and even though they replaced it, it just got cold and hard quick, it was not good. I really enjoyed their tea! Felt bougie for the day and burned a hole in my wallet but it was well worth the experience. Definitely need to try at least once.

There are a ton of tea flavors there and they let you smell them all before ordering. Although there is a full sandwich and entrée menu, we all went with the tea experience that came with tea, soup, scones, and finger sandwiches. The tea lived up to the billing and was mighty tasty - although only about 2-3 cups in each teapot (I feel like it should have been 4-5). The scones were uniformly delicious (my fave was the birthday cake scone), while the sandwiches were just OK. The bread on each sandwich overwhelmed the fillings/meat, so I just didn't get a ton of flavor. The service left a bit to be desired. We kept getting different servers, and that seemed to result in some confusion (i.e., being asked multiple times what we ordered, and food and tea coming out at different times). They missed an order completely, and the service was slow. They then asked us to leave as they needed to sit the next large group. No problem there as it clearly stated that the tea service had a time limit, but the only reason we hit it was because of the slow service and the need to fix orders (i.e., one whole person's tea service didn't come out with everyone else's). Also, the server said mimosas were half off but only after we ordered, did they say the half off didn't apply on Mother's Day! Overall, I'd go back again. The tea was excellent! But perhaps with a smaller group?

I've been to some bad afternoon teas, overhyped afternoon teas and some really great afternoon teas. Peacock Alley at the Willard Intercontinental is one of those great afternoon teas. I went on a Saturday during their 12PM seating. Tea and accompaniments are served over 90 minutes and costs $90 or $110 with a glass of champagne. This price is comparable to not only similar afternoon teas in the DC area, but also higher end afternoon teas in London. Peacock Alley has a wide selection of black, green, white, herbal and Roobios tea. It also comes with a mix of sweet and savory accompaniments including scones, ginger sandwiches and pastries. They were very accommodating with my request for no nuts and were very knowledgeable about all of the items served with tea. While you are only given 90 minutes I never felt rushed and was able to enjoy my tea and snacks. The ambiance in the tea room is amazing. They have soft harp music playing, the tables are arranged with ample space between them so you never feel that you are too close to other guests or those in your party, and the flatware accompanying tea is good quality. The service was quick and efficient and they were more than happy to accommodate someone in my party who was running late. There are a lot of afternoon teas at this price point around the city and this is one that is actually worth it. They also have a tea to-go service where you can enjoy the same food and tea at home for a slightly cheaper price. Owner, Terrie, wanted her tearoom to be appealing but not too frilly. She nailed it. Offering old-world hospitality, her tearoom is casual and cozy. She also is a force of nature when it comes to supporting the community and local artists, crafters, writers, and tea lovers! Depending on your appetite, the tea menu provides plenty of options from a "Spot of Tea", a pot of tea, two scones and fruit to the "Dilly-Dally Tea" which includes two pots of tea, four scones both savory and sweet, tea sandwiches, fruit, cheese, crudités, pastries and petite desserts. With the set menu changing monthly, you may be served such delightful tea sandwiches as cherry-walnut cream cheese, lavender chicken salad, avocado egg salad, carrot raisin sweet sandwich, tuna baby-pea crostini and the classic cucumber and cream cheese. The savory scones may include spring onion and cheddar while the sweet selection may be a peach cobbler scone. If you are lucky, you may come in time for the strawberry cupcakes and the homemade chocolate fudge. We enjoyed every morsel and the service was superb! Whatever treats are on the menu, it's always appetizing! Tea drinkers won't be overwhelmed with an extensive tea menu. Terrie thoughtfully offers a selection of about fifteen choices ranging from classic teas like Earl Grey and English Breakfast to green teas, herbal and fruit teas, oolong teas and chai teas. There's a tea for every taste! It's Earl Grey for me! After tea, be sure to enjoy shopping in Cuppa Cheer's corner gift shop. Filled with not only tea caddies, teacups, teapots and books, this shop is also brimming with hand-crafted items such as greeting cards, tea cozies, tea coasters, jewelry, wreaths and more. You may even find an elegant hat that suits your fancy. Be sure to browse around the tearoom dotted with tasteful tea décor and take a gander at the tea chandelier and the teacup quilt both hanging in the craft room. My Cuppa Cheer runneth over!

The room was not set up for our reservation, it felt dusty and cluttered, the tables had crumbs on it, tea cups and the plates had a mix of dust and this black crusty stuff, and she just kept interrupting my daughter's 16th birthday celebration. This mostly because the room wasn't already prepared for the start of our party time. She kept having to bring in stuff and interrupting our conversations and made it awkward. My daughter is autistic, this matters because the host kept touching her shoulder every time she walked past her. I asked for the cake because after an hour of this we decided we don't need the other hour. Instead of leaving us be with the cake I brought the host decided to start singing happy birthday before I had the candle lite and while my daughter was opening her gifts. While I get she is the host I didn't not expect to have her insert herself in our party sooo much. We are not rude people so we took the leftovers she packed and tossed it away when we made it to McDonalds. I'm guessing we paid almost $350 and got the crapshoot of a bad day...

The most amazing part of this service was how well the host considered all of the guests' various dietary restrictions with creative food options so they wouldn't feel slighted. We had among us people who couldn't handle dairy, eggs, nuts, wheat, chocolate and soy. So it was not an easy task to prepare the tea with all of those restrictions in mind. Everything was presented in a calm and elegant way, and we all had fancy hats provided by our host to add to the atmosphere. All my guests left feeling happy for the chance to enjoy the tea together. It will be a long lasting memory for us of a day of simply enjoying our friendship and chatting about how long we have known each other. The pictures show the delightful assortment of foods, the beautiful table setting and the smiles of my guests. You'll enjoy your tea party if you book with Tea Time Now.
