A beautiful, small Armenian cafe in Adams Morgan. I was curious about their Zhingyalov Hats so this was what I had for my breakfast! The hats were basically (half of) a flatbread stuffed with a great variety of herbs. Smelled and tasted herby, refreshing, and a bit smoky. The hats were soft and a bit glutinous; the stuffing was juicy. It was served with some yogurt. I tried spreading it on and/or inside the hats and it was even more delicious! Besides food, there were beautiful, unique decor around the dining area. I also liked that it was clean and there was no loud music -- just the vibe I needed in the morning, after my running. I wish I could have more opportunities to try other interesting dishes, such as the Armenian Lahmacun and lentil soup! This is one of the few Armenian spots I know of in DC, and in the eastern US in general. It is a very cute cafe with a few chairs outside as well. I was super excited to try it out. Sadly, I was a tad bit disappointed. I got to try their khachapuri Yerevan style, slice of gata, and some imported Armenian tea. The tea was probably my favorite part of the meal. Nice mug that it is served in as well. It's flavorful, herbal, and very well balanced. I had it without sugar to enjoy the full natural flavor. However, the pastries were both very dry. The khachapuri is not at all like the khachapuri you might get in a Georgian restaurant. It is more like a cheese empanada. And the cheese inside is crumbly, the dough is dry. Not much flavor. I probably wouldn't get it again. The gata was also pretty dry, but it did pair well with the tea. Quite crumbly, subtle sweetness -- not overwhelming at all. The portion is solid for the price. It's solid. All in all, love the shop, but this trips food just didn't hit the spot. Perhaps I'll try again another time. read more

I was excited to try Armenian food here at Yerevan. I got a cup of the red lentil and apricot soup which had some sweetness from the apricots, some tartness from tomatoes and was delicious. I also got Zhingyalov Hats, a flatbread stuffed with finely diced herbs and greens. It's a traditional dish of Armenian cuisine from Artsakh. I have made it at home before so it was fun to try it at a restaurant. The dough reminded me of Yemenite malawach I grew up eating or an Indian paratha. I ordered it vegan so it came with hamim, a pepper paste spread (instead of labneh). I was actually interested in trying the pepper paste spread too so it was fun it came with it but I think the dish would go better with Labneh. I really enjoyed the decorations here, especially a wall decorated with broken pieces of pottery. Ordering was at the counter here and a few tables had people working on their computers. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! A friend and I stopped by Yerevan on Sunday morning, and I'm so glad we did. I adored it. Yerevan is an Armenian cafe but calling it just a cafe seems limiting! Yes, it opens daily at 10 am for breakfast, pastries, and coffee. They're also open for lunch and dinner (they close at 8/9 pm depending on the day). And they offer happy hour from 3-6 pm Monday through Friday. And they host events celebrating Armenian culture: monthly free wine tastings, book signings, art exhibitions, and other events. It's a special place, and Adams Morgan residents are so lucky to have it. But back to our experience yesterday. We ordered a couple of coffees (both were great) and shared a couple of dishes from their menu. Lahmajun is a dough rolled thin and topped with minced beef. Yerevan's was served with a lemon wedge and Armenian pepper paste, and together with the lemon and pepper paste, it was absolutely delicious. The dough was so thin and the meat topping well seasoned. It's a dish I love, and Yerevan's version was absolutely no exception. We also ordered a Zhingyalov Hats (a flatbread stuffed with herbs and greens and served with a side of labneh). I've only had Zhingyalov Hats one other time and loved it then. I loved Yerevan's, too. It's so simple and yet so incredibly flavorful. A great vegetarian dish. Their menu offers so much more than these dishes (although I heartily recommend these two classics): soujuk pie, dolma, a basturma wrap, lentil kufte, and several sweet pastries. Based on the Lahmajun and the Zhingyalov Hats, I would eat anything else on their menu (and plan to come back and try to). In addition to the great food and very good coffees, the service was outstanding, too - very friendly and helpful. The cafe is comfortable and casual, but very charming - with lots of Armenian touches (and art) throughout. Yerevan is exactly the kind of place I love. Great food - including dishes that aren't very easy to find in the area - clearly made with love. Excellent service. Yerevan is wonderful - a great place to enjoy a meal or a snack or a coffee or a glass of Armenian wine. A great place to enjoy with family or friends. Washington D.C. is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to visit and I was lucky enough to visit in mid-September. The weather was perfect, but I needed my coffee fix in order to properly go sightseeing. My coffee shop stop in D.C. is Yerevan. Their Armenian coffee is bold, but doesn't have the bitter aftertaste that usually keeps me away from Armenian style espressos. The other highlight for me was their take on the trendy Dubai chocolate. Their Dubai chocolate latte stood out to me because of they managed to achieve a sweetness level that doesn't drown out every other flavor. You can still taste the coffee and the sweetness complements the drink instead of overpowering it. Overall it's a great little cafe that is worth trying out if you are in the area. read more

This feels unfortunate to write because I've wanted to try this place for the longest time! This matcha just tasted like milk. I ordered it with rose syrup and soy mylk but all I tasted was the soy milk. I should have looked it up then I wouldn't have ordered the matcha. I do want to emphasize that I still want to come back to give their coffee and food a shot. It's a very cute place and the barista was so welcoming! I also want to note we came during a weekend with so many events going on in AdMo and I only saw one barista, they were so efficient and sweet. One of my favorite coffee shops in DC!! Tucked away in the outskirts of Adams Morgan, Yerevan may not look like much from the outside, but this hidden gem is an absolute delight. The staff is all super friendly, and they have the most incredible selection of pastries, coffee, and tea. I have probably tried half of their pastry case, and I continue to be impressed with each and every item. I absolutely adore their homestyle baklava -- the phyllo dough is perfectly crispy and soaks up the honey and nut mixture beautifully, and the dessert is simultaneously decadent and not overly sweet. The honey nugget is a great little sweet bite, and is the perfect gluten-free treat or small pick-me-up, and the honey cake is absolutely incredible. It's a smidge overly sweet (as the main flavor is, as the name implies, honey), but it still manages to be amazing. Beyond their lovely sweets, their drinks are incredible. They have one of my favorite matcha lattes in DC, as well as a matcha rose latte that is perfect when you're looking for a hint of spring. Their coffee is also wonderful, with a great nutty aroma and deep, robust flavor. It's also served in the cutest little Armenian mugs, which really adds to the overall experience. The space is shockingly large, with 4-5 larger tables and a couple 2-person tables, all beautifully arranged with cute little flower pots and throw pillows. They even have a small stack of books and board games if you get bored of yapping and need something else to keep you entertained. This is a delightful cafe tucked in the Adams Morgan area. I love that it champions the regional specificity of being an Armenian cafe. It allows for its pastry case and drinks to have a unique profile that evokes flavors we wouldn't normally get out of a standard cafe. It's so dazzling to see the variety of sweets they have, and there are other things to purchase sprinkled throughout the cafe to peruse. There was ample seating, but the cafe itself is very intimate. Some signage at the cafe points that they host some community tasting workshops and that sounds like so much fun! My barista was quick to make my drink and very friendly and explanatory of the menu. I would stick to the drinks that are unique to the restaurant and coffees because it's just what they are best at making. Had a matcha latte order, and the color was closer to that of milk then matcha, but I think I ordered the wrong item to make a fair assessment. Deserves a revisit on my part, hehe! read more

Found this little gem while searching for a spot to catch up with an old friend. It was a delight to find a taste of home only a block from my Adams Morgan hostel. The Armenian coffee was delicious and authentic, and it was funny to watch my friend's reaction when he tried a sip of mine! He opted for the hot cocoa and really enjoyed it. It was nice to sit in the cafe and hear Farsi, Russian, and Armenian. It is clearly a family business and the barista and staff made us feel so welcome. This is a hidden gem in Admo! Lots of seating and a great place to come and do work or read. Food: We came in for lunch and had the trio. I think this was a good introduction to Armenian food for me, but my Armenian friend who came with me said it was just alright. I would recommend the classic khatchapuri puffs - we both loved them!! The grape leaves were also delicious but note that they are served cold, which is not the traditional Armenian way. Coffee and Dessert: Now this is what will keep me coming back again and again! The honey cake was to die for! My mouth is watering just thinking of it. If you like Turkish-type coffee or anything on the stronger side, I would highly recommend you try the Armenian coffee. Good service and nice atmosphere but disappointing food. My friend and I ordered at the counter and received our food in a timely manner. I ordered the lahmajun, my friend ordered the Zhingyalov Hats and the Veggie Kufta, and we split the Khachapuri. Unfortunately Yerevan did not have the red lentil and apricot soup, one of the few unique Armenian dishes on the menu. I tried all the dishes my friend and I ordered and they all disappointed. Lahmajun: The dough was unremarkable, there was very little meat, and I could only barely taste the garlic and the red peppers among the other flavors. Khachapuri: This was a borek by another name and completely undistinctive. The feta lacked flavor and this pastry needed another cheese. Zhingyalov Hats: All-around not good. The greens and herbs were extremely overcooked with all flavor leeched out, and the dough was underwhelming. Veggie Kufta: Was served cold which came as a surprise, unremarkable. If you're looking for Caucasus food in DC, there are many better spots, including in Adams Morgan. read more

Great food at this cozy Armenian cafe in Adams Morgan. You have to take a few steps down to enter Yerevan Cafe, which makes it feel tucked into the ground and like a literal hidden gem. The space is cutely decorated and bright and airy. I was there around 2pm on a Wednesday and a few others were working on their laptops in calm silence. I ordered food: Lentil soup: the lentil soup contained carrots and apricots and was absolutely delicious -- highly recommend if you're hungry. Veggie lovers: I ordered this for a chance to taste both dishes that it came with: zhingyalov hats and eech. The eech was like a spiced bulgur salad (served cold), and it was tasty and very filling. The zhingylov hats was like a spinach paratha/stuffed flatbread. It tasted a little bit too mild to me but was much more delicious dipped in the labneh that it came with. read more

Found this place on a rainy day in DC and it was the perfect stop for lunch! We actually walked past it at first since we didn't realize there are a couple steps down to the place as it's a bit below ground level, but a sign that they'd put out on the sidewalk pointed us in the right direction! The server was really friendly and helped us choose our food and dessert too. I was also really impressed by the simple yet homey decorations that were put up around the cafe. There are also several tables to sit and WiFi is offered. They also sell a few Armenian items like coffee beans, chocolates, drinks, and more from the shelves. The whole place is so cute!! We ended up trying these menu items: Lahmajun - 5/5 - this was the Armenian pizza and it was super flavorful, well spiced, and squeezing the lemon on top gave it a perfect citrusy zing! Zhingyalov hats - 6!!/5 -these were filled with greens and SO tasty. Definitely my favorite, and feels really light and healthy as well. Mikado - 3/5 - honestly want that impressed with the dessert. This is a different sort of business for Adams Morgan. It's not a jumbo slice carryout or a hookah bar, nor is it a big upscale restaurant. It's more of a small underground cafe with a market function as well. Given that it's a pretty old building (and on a stretch that's seen a lot of failed businesses), they built out the space quite nicely. I cannot recall another Armenian restaurant in DC. About time we had one. I visited because they were open on the holiday. This was with reduced hours, and they were out of the lentil kofta I wanted so I ended up with grape leaves instead to round out a platter that also included a beet and bean salad and a flatbread with greens baked into it. There was still a nice mix of flavors; a dill-heavy salad mixed very nicely with my toasted bread. They had a dessert spread as well. I'll have to come back if I want my lentils, but I hope this place can do well by being different. read more

In the heart of Adams Morgan is the city's first Armenian bakery- Yerevan (named after the capital of Armenia). On the bottom floor of a 1910 apartment building, it's open every day. Opened by an immigrant family, its meant to be a community space that happens to brew Armenian mountain tea and bake gata, Armenian sweet bread. Here's why you should go: 1) Space: Artisan art from Armenia hang on the wall and goods from Armenia are sold on shelves throughout Yerevan- jams, dumplings, toys, clothes, etc. There are several tables inside and one lone table outdoors. There's a kids' corner with two toys and a community coloring wall, which my four-year-old loved. 2) Drinks: They brew Eight O'Clock coffee and made an excellently creamy latte for $4.50. However, get the Armenian mountain tea for the cultural experience. 3) Food: They sell a variety of savory and sweet pastries from gata, Armenian sweet bread, to baklava to khachapuri. My daughter and I got a sampling of pastries and enjoyed the gata and a chocolate layered pastry. Overall, the pastries were a bit dry, but that's typical for the area. (I grew up in Central Asia where pastries are also a bit dry for the American taste.) 4) Service: The workers' passion can be felt from the moment you walk through the glass doors. A gentleman from Armenia and a woman from Southeast D.C. were working the counter and both were proud of the cafe they helped build. Service was fast. 5) Wifi: There's strong, free wifi available. Open every day, this is a perfect spot to work. If you love coffee, tea and have a passion for culture, go to Yerevan once it opens at 10 a.m. every day. read more

Yerevan is a cozy cafe/restaurant. The lady working was extremely friendly; she provided information on the teas they had, the way to eat the food, and even how the food is traditionally made in Armenia. I ordered the veggie platter and it was so delicious. I also got the thyme tea that was good as well. I enjoyed relaxing in the cafe with my food and tea reading my book. This review is long overdue! I came here during its opening week and it was such a wonderful experience beginning to end. It was very quiet and there was an Armenian women in front of us in line. She pointed out a few pastries she thought we should try and told us to try some candy as well. She was very excited to finally have Armenian food within access and mentioned she drove from Alexandria to pick some things up twice already. We loved all the desserts recommended and truly enjoyed our coffee as well. The windows allow you to people watch perfectly on a nice day. At one point, the worker dropped by to chat to us about the desserts and coffee for a moment, which really enhanced the welcoming feel. Excitedly came to Yerevan since I was in the neighborhood and was underwhelmed by the food. While the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly, the items I ordered were quite bland. I got the red lentil and apricot soup, as well as the khatchapuri. Since it's summer, the soup was served cold, and I thought the ingredients would bring out some unique flavors, but unfortunately, the soup just tasted like red lentils with sugar. The khatchapuri was undercooked and mostly tasted like dough. There really wasn't much of a presene of the Georgian cheese in the khatchapuri, which was a bummer. After being disappointed by both items, I figured there pastries would be the selling point. I ordered the mikado, an Armenian Chocolate Caramel layered cake, for takeout. Trying to dig in to the fake was like trying to pierce through cardboard- the cake was extremely dry and lacked any flavor of chocolate and caramel. While I loved the service and ambiance, the savory and sweet items were a huge letdown. Maybe a better spot for drinks and working. read more

Woah these are the types of restaurants /cafes I love seeing and trying! A pretty cozy basement cafe with several tables inside. Small cafe but feels open and spacious prob due to the small tables. I tried the LAHMAJUN and VEGGIE KUFTA. Both were super flavorful and delicious. It had plenty of spices albeit if a bit on the dry side. The LAHMAJUN is aka "Armenian pizza" according the restaurant and the dough does remind me of thin stone oven pizza. The minced meat has tomatoes and the spices taste like cumin, pepper and paprika...all my fave things. I love trying new cuisines so this place makes it super approachable (smaller plates). Oh well, Wonderful place we discovered today. It was decorated with lovely Armenian decorations and shelves with authentic food items for sale. I was surprised by how excellent the food was in this cozy Cafe. We tried the apricot soup was just fantastic, so good!!! And the best Napoleon cake I ever tried!!! My husband tried Mikado cake; he is not a big fan of desserts, but he loved Mikado and even bought Mikado, baklava, and honey cake to go. And Armenian coffee was stunning.
