Grill too big for our car...a friend came with his pick up, staff assisted us by securing parking spot first then helped us load the grill into the pick up. The manager helped heavy lifting as well. New location for Hilo ACE Hardware. Store isn't as big as the old location but seems like more parking if that's possible. They can't make chipped car key duplicates so they suggested I got to Keaau ACE Hardware, I called ahead and they said yes. Once I got to ACE Keaau I found out that there are two brands of chipped keys, the machine for my Toyota chipped key wasn't working so I wasted my time out there though the staff was very nice and apologized. read more

Certain items I used to buy majorly went up in price. For example the wooden doweling went up almost 7x in price. I purchased another item which I still thought was pretty expensive for what it was. I also thought the duplicate key was expensive considering it was a lot cheaper at Walmart and Home Depot last time I went there to have extra keys made. I think the owner also owns Ben Franklin which I noticed jacked up their prices as well. Check HPM and Home Depot and even Walmart first before buying from ACE. Better yet if you can wait then try Amazon to spend way less money with usually free shipping. read more

This is a great medium-sized hardware store that usually has great service. Reading over some of the reviews, it is very disappointing to realize some people thrive by confronting others. Sometimes it's the store employees, other times is more than likely the customers themselves. I've always had good experiences when shopping at Ace over the past 20 something years. In my most recent experience this morning, I had car trouble nearby and needed in emergency place to park call fixing my tire. I explained the situation to the store manager, and was pleased to find he was very accommodating. I am an Ace rewards customer. I had to leave my car there from early this morning until late afternoon. Thank you for understanding an emergency situation. Mahalo! read more

Every time I start to feel bad for brick&mortar stores due to the convenience, lack of hassle and price of amazon or other online seller, I have another terrible experience that makes me so very grateful for online shopping. I needed a replacement spigot for a ceramic 5 gal. water bottle dispenser and brought the item with me to the ACE store in Keaau. An extremely lazy girl - rather than take me to the location - just pointed. I insisted she come with me and show me the item. Turns out she had no idea, so she asked another girl equally as obtuse. Finally an adult male told me that this giant ACE didn't carry this very common item. Wasted time, wasted visit, general disrespect toward the customer in an EMPTY AMAZINGLY overpriced store ($18.95 for an empty 2-gal. plastic water bottle!!) I came home, went online to Amazon. typed in "spigot" and instantly the item came up, for less than $5, free shipping, detailed photos showing indeed it was the exact item I required. Received a $25 rewards card because I spend a lot of money here. Used the card, but had to return the item because it turned out that it was not needed. They would not give me any credit for the $25 to buy something else. "One time use" they said. Well, that one time use is the last time I'll shop there. Feel like they ripped me off. read more

This review is for how I was rudely approached and talked to by one of their employees about parking in their parking lot while my husband went into THEIR store to shop and I walked toward the neighboring restaurant to pick up a take out order. I explained that since my husband had to pick up some things from Ace Hardware, I decided to order lunch from the restaurant next door because of convenience. He ordered me to move my car to the restaurant's parking lot even though my husband was purchasing things from Ace. They weren't busy on this day and the parking lot was not full at all, but he insisted that I move my car. I was so frustrated by this man's condescending attitude that I went into Ace to tell my husband what was going on and we left without getting what we needed. I always try to support local businesses first and have enjoyed shopping at Ace in the past, but this experience makes me think twice about shopping there again. read more
