Chicken Tikka Masala and veggie samosa on basmati rice with green condiment sauce
    Page T.

**NEW LOCATION** 442 Uluniu Street. Same phone 808-262-1800. Much larger space with tables and seating somewhat similar to what Tokoname (the previous tenant) had. The vibe is a bit more upscale but the prices seem the same. I ordered takeout: chicken tikka masala and veggie samosas. It came with basmati rice and little containers of a green sauce, which I think has coriander and yogurt. The chicken was very tender and all was yummy. The estimated time was 20 minutes and it was about that long but I arrived later than that so am not sure. But it wasn't 45-60 minutes like at the old Kailua shopping center location. (And no chicken roaming around inside, lol.) It wasn't busy as it just opened in the new spot and there is lots of street parking on Sundays. (Whatever you do, don't park in the lane that leads to houses.) There was a party of four enjoying their dinner--without me asking, one of the men told me the food was great. Hope this quality keeps up after business picks up. I posted pics of the menu but those are available on their website.

Had lunch here. Food came out quickly, the staff working there was nice, and prices for the lunch special are reasonable. You get a ton off food so you could probably split it into two meals. I was the only person dining in but there were plenty of takeout orders. As for the food, I got the chicken tikka plate and some plain naan. The chicken was tender and flavored well, the curry was also tasty. The naan paired well with it all. The basmati rice was a little bland though. But that's minor. Overall, a good experience.

This review is based on my past experience and whether I can make something better at home. This place seems to have a great takeout business. There's not much seating, except for a couple of tables outside the restaurant. The gentleman running the place is super friendly. As for the food, I found it to be hit or miss. The Himalayan curry was very tasty, but the chicken tandoori was very disappointing. The tandoori locked any sort of flavor and it was dry. I was really looking forward to having a good tandoori, which I haven't had in a very long time. The chaat and naan were well made, but the basmati rice wasn't prepared to standard. I make basmati all the time so please take that with a grain of salt.

So happy to have them back. I just ordered the lunch special today, but fantastic as always.

    Chicken Tikka Madras

Great option for Indian food in Kailua! We both loved our dishes - Lamb Bhunas and Chicken Tikka Madras. Spice levels 6 and 7 were about right for us as spicy enjoyers as it packed a good amount of heat! The garlic jalapeño naan is great for soaking up the sauces. Service for takeout was great! Ambiance seemed nice, but we were just in there for take out.

The food is seriously incredible. Very sweet people. Quaint location. Some outdoor seating. Everything is CRAZY good including the service. Genuine food and service.

Excellent Indian food. In our opinion best on Oahu. Great lunch offerings as well. Pleasant service and atmosphere.

    Do they have new hours?

Can they do a Paneer Tikka in the tandoor?

Yes can do .., just not in the menu .. but if asked yes we can Do it .. you can text at 808--358-7158 if any questions too regarding the Menu

How are they with food allergy concerns?

We are cooked to order. We are very concerned and we cooked according to our customer service list.

Are there certain hours to call to place a take out order?

I called fairly regularly from 5-6:30 this evening (Monday) and got no response. I was really craving Indian food so finally my husband and I drove over. The restaurant was completely dark and there were no signs...have you shut down? There was no…

Why is it called Himalayan kitchen? Dishes sound like Indian dishes. Do they have Mongolian dumplings?

No Mongolian dumplings. They do have a few curries and dishes that are not traditionally Indian, but most of the menu is very similar to Indian food.

Some Asian sauces are gluten-free, but some contain wheat that you might not expect. One of my favorite dishes, the vermicelli plate, is labeled gluten free on the menu. However, it comes with fish sauce, and although the sauce is delicious (having tried it before I had to eat gluten-free), I don't think the fish sauce is gluten free - the server I asked didn't know but showed me the brand they use (Three Crabs), and when I searched the brand online, some results indicated the "Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein" in the sauce may be derived from wheat. For non-gluten sensitive diners I would say this place is 4+ stars, but for celiac/gluten-intolerant diners, I would say 3+ stars as you will have to do a little extra research yourself to judge if you are comfortable with the sauces.

Despite the fact that it's a considerably trek for city-dwellers, factoring either traffic or bus schedules into the equation, or both if you're particularly unlucky, it's a journey always worth taking. Hit Hanauma Bay along the way and make it a day trip; the only way to top those dazzling sights is to follow them with a stellar meal. Boasting a menu composed of locally-sourced produce and entirely vegan options, you'll want to take a number of friends for the best experience. Heck, get out there and make some new friends! Join one of the long communal picnic tables out back and introduce yourself; there are no friendlier folks on earth than those living in paradise, as far as I've seen. That said, if there was only one dish to order, it would have to be the Oh WOW Laulau. Wow, indeed! No where else on earth have I found vegan laulau, let alone such a stellar rendition. Traditionally consisting of fatty pork and/or fish steamed in taro leaves, this version eschews the meat in favor of hearty root vegetables, adding creamy coconut into the mix for richness. Not to be overlooked is the Tofu Poke provided on the side, claiming to be spicy but really bearing just enough warmth to taste perfectly balanced. This was easily my personal favorite from the small sampling of dishes provided, but it's a close call when all the options are so good. Another front runner is the BBQ Portobello Sandwich. Mushrooms marinated in a bright, smoky barbecue sauce practically sing between two whole wheat buns. Coconut slaw tops off the assemblage with just the right amount of subtle sweetness to contrast the deeply savory flavors within. Simpler but no less spectacular dishes include the Roasted Veg Platter and Roasted Veg Avocado Sandwich. The way that the vegetables are treated with respect, from the moment they're harvested from nearby farms to the care taken when they reach the kitchen is evident with every bite. Cooked with care and proffered generously with each serving, even the basics make the trek out here worthwhile. I'm still trying to recreate that impossibly umami gravy offered on the side. It's one of those things that are so astoundingly, inconceivably delicious, it's impossible to deconstruct. Each entree promises an ideal amount of food; satisfying diners without over-stuffing them. That said, you'll still want to make room for dessert, especially when you see the towering bowls full of Outta This Swirled Soft Serve. Cool, naturally sweet spirals of banana-based soft serve are dressed to the nines with cacao sauce that hardens much like magic shell, granola and coconut flakes tumbling down the mountainous terrain, and fresh fruits that vary based on local availability- Expect papaya always to be in ample supply, based on the thriving papaya trees on premise. Each order is abundant enough to be a considered a full meal in and of itself.
