Tried this spot last night and it did not disappoint! Went there with an open mind considering the menu can be vegan friendly and the spice level varies to your preference. Originally we were only going to order a butter chicken, but ended up also trying their version of a spicy vegan fried rice, and garlic naan. Spice level was at an 8. Don't get me wrong, it was hot, but flavorful, and the heat mellows out. Delicious! Butter chicken was so soft and the garlic naan had to perfect amount of garlic seasoning. This place is one of my favorite restaurants not only on Oahu, but the flavor impact it generates with each and every visit makes it one of my favorites in the world. They dont do fancy-schmancy stuff with a shaving of onion over the top of half an entrees worth of food then drizzle the plate with a design and smear it before charging you an arm and a leg. No sir. This place feeds tou and feeds you well. The serving size is enough to have you waddle down the steps and out to your vehicle. I ALWAYS fill the table with food, even when it is just me dining in. Freezing the leftovers has become a magical part of the experience. From the Samosas to the Momos (dumplings) to the tikka masala. I had a BBQ chicken on the bone (tandori) and it came on a hot griddle with onions carrots, green squash and tomatoes. The garlic naan is so delicious, but dip it in that sauce that coats the tikka masala and you will thank me later. The mango smoothie (Lassi) is amazing everything. They have 4 areas to sit in: Main dining area, balcony seating. An area that I will call the inner courtyard and a brightly lit room right off the courtyard (which is where I like to sit so my photos come out better lit). There really isn't a bad choice. Parking is abundant right outside in the pay lot, but we have found parking nearby for free. The service here has never been less than as amazing as the flavors upon the table. This place is super yummy! Great options from vegan to extra meats! They have a heat profile from 1-10, they told us 6 was considered Thai hot. We ordered 5 as my husband can't handle too much heat, however I didn't taste the heat at all. But it was still so good and full of flavor. The lamb was perfectly cooked. Bold, Flavorful, and Comforting We're at Himalayan Kitchen and the food is delicious and full of spice. We ordered the aloo chili with tofu, saag (spinach with potatoes), naan bread, turmeric rice, and the spring rolls. The spring rolls were actually my favorite -- they were a bit greasy (you can see it in the photo), but still crispy, flavorful, and really good. Everything else was well-seasoned, aromatic, and comforting, with bold flavors that didn't overwhelm. You can sit inside or outside, which is nice depending on the weather. There's parking in the back; according to the host it's about $0.75 per hour (possibly after 6 PM), but either way it's very reasonable and easy. Overall, a great meal and a place I'll definitely be coming back to. read more

I was told this was unusual by our friends who recommended this place so will try going again and updating if true. We had booked a table for a specific time. We arrived early and said we would wait till our other party arrived. They said we could sit if we wanted but they had no idea which table was booked. We chose one and when our friends arrived we opened a bottle of wine and ordered pappadam. After 30 min no pappadam but we also order our dinners. 30min later, 1hr after we say down still no papadam or our food. 30 min later our papadam arrives and we are on our end bottle of wine. No food till 1'45" after we ordered. The food was tasty but we were so full of water, wine and papadam it was hard to get the appetite to enjoy all of the dishes we'd ordered. While waiting for the ladies room others said they'd been waiting 1hr for takeout, 1 hour and still waiting for good like us but at that point, we'd been waiting for 90min. The odd thing is they seemed to have alot of staff, busboy, waiters, servers, all not speaking English except for the owner and our waiter taking the order. How long should one wait for food? Should the owner know they can't fulfill orders at a certain capacity? Should one tip after waiting for 2 hours after being seated amd if so, how much? There were a few larger parties of 8 or so and maybe because of the wait, several people came out on the terrace where we were seated and stood basically over us having full FaceTime conversations while we tried to have our own. read more

This is my absolute favorite place for Indian and Nepalese food in Hawai'i. I'll tell you why... The food is always delicious, with so many choices that I still haven't tried it all and I've been coming here at least 10+ years now. The portions are generous and the price is so affordable. The atmosphere in the Kaimuki location is laid back, and I love to eat outside and enjoy the cool breezes at night on their patio listening to music and eating and chatting with friends. We never feel pressured to leave so the next party can have our table bc there's room for everyone. The service is always so friendly and accommodating. Whenever we have a birthday party or gathering there, the staff goes above and beyond to make us feel special and enjoy the experience. Any substitutions or requests are usually able to be made and there's never bad vibes about it. This location is HUGE so there's never a wait for a table, unlike some of the other places in town where it can take an hour or more to get a seat. This is something I highly appreciate because let's face it: O'ahu is overpopulated and restaurants get hyped up and then you wait forever. And those places raise the prices and quality goes down bc they're overwhelmed by popularity. They're BYOB so it makes having some nice wine with dinner that much more affordable plus you can have whatever you want to drink, you're not limited to the restaurant's menu. There's parking galore which is a challenge at other Indian restaurants (if they even offer parking) so that also adds to the enjoyment of eating here. Any time I bring friends here we ALWAYS enjoy, have a great meal, have fun and never break the piggy bank. read more

We Love trying new restaurants and we decided to try this location. Food - we had chicken masala, rice, roti, bread basket (naan - garlic, onion & plain), mix tandoori kebab, & Madras madness. All of it is highly recommended and must try. Dessert: Gulab Jamun - this was delicious and must try. 4 spice chocolate Gelato - its an acquired taste but definitely different and good. Atmosphere: we sat outside in the lanai and view is nice and great place to sit during dinner. Service: was amazing! Suman was great! Surprised this place is so lowly rated. We thought it was delicious and a stand out restaurant. TBH we didn't have eating Indian / Himalayan on our bingo card for Hawaii but we're happy we came! I was really excited to eat what my father was raving about, and unfortunately, I ordered my food to a zero spice level since I have no tolerance for spice and it still made my mouth burn so I wasn't able to enjoy it :(. I can't handle the heat! But I've been places where they can do 0 spice and this wasn't it. Regardless, the service is very kind and it's apparent they care about their restaurant and the food they provide. They keep everything clean despite the older appearance of the state of the complex. They kept refilling our waters after every ship which was a bit excessive but I'll give them props for attentiveness. The location is really neat in the upstairs of the store hub. The food is always excellent . I went there on 03/23 Monday for my birthday. We got the Saag Paneer, Eggplant Korma, Chicken Bhuna, Fish Kadai, Saffron Rice, Fish and Shrimp Salad, The fish was too fishy but the shrimp was great. We also ordered the bread basket that had Onion Naan, Garlic Naan and Plain Naan which was fresh and hot. Himalayan Chat was also good. We brought our own bottle of Chardonnay since they are byob and they provided nice wine glasses. Overall we always enjoy coming on special occasions. The servers were all nice. read more

I love Indian food. It's a food I grew to love and often ate while living in California but not something I crave here in Hawaii. My friend, who's visiting from California, was craving Indian food and wanted to come to Himalayan Kitchen for dinner. I'd been here before for take-out but never to dine in. From my experience, I wouldn't come back but I did leave full. The restaurant is on the second floor of the building. Walk up the flight of stairs and check in at the front. Our party of four arrived during their dinner hours and were given the option to sit inside or outside. Outside is beautifully lit, open, and airy. Inside has several tables for small groups, music playing, but not the best ventilation. We sat indoors but I recommend taking advantage of their patio outside. The menu at Himalayan Kitchen is vast offering appetizers, specialities, entrees, and much more. They offer different proteins as well as vegetarian and vegan options. I decided on getting Butter Chicken with a Mild Spice (spice levels are 1-10). My group ordered Plain and Garlic Naan and a Side of Rice to share, plus their own entrees. The rice was nothing special--your typical basmati rice. The naan was okay; more on the softer end and not as crispy as I'm used to. We all preferred the garlic out of the two. My Butter Chicken was aromatic and the sauce was rich, savory, and sweet. The chicken were nicely chunked but a bit drier. I'd order something else next time. What didn't make our experience the best was service. It took a long time for us to be helped and served. Our group were sat in the corner and kind of forgotten. We weren't checked on throughout the duration of our meal and we had to flag our server down for different reasons. Between being served our first appetizer and our entree it took over 40 minutes. You can find Himalayan Kitchen in Kaimuki surrounded by other retsaurants such as AV and Restaurant Aki. Parking is available in their paid lot or on the street. With this cuisine being more limited on the island, this is an okay restaurant to satisfy those cravings, just be mindful that service is slow. read more

Me and a friend decided to have an impromptu dinner on a Friday night. As he wanted to do curry and it's close to his house, we chose this place. We did not have reservations and got there around 6:30pm and were seated right away. The place is a little on the older side, but it's not too bad. It's spacious and noice level was low, which was good that I could catch up with my friend. The staff were nice and helpful with good recommendations on their menu. We placed our order and the food started coming out. Not the fastest, as we probably waited about 15min for our appetizer to come out, and another 10-15min for the curry. BUT, we assumed they make each dish individually to order, which is good. All the dishes we ate were hot, full of flavor, and just the right amount of heat (which you can request 1-10). Serving sizes were nice, and comparable to other Indian establishments. Overall, our experience was pretty nice, food was good, and the company was great. Downside, the place maybe needs a little refresh, and for those who frequent the Kaimuki area know, the municipal parking lot is bad. The next time we dine here, we need to make sure to bring more people for all the food we ordered LoL. read more

I've been here 2 times and service has always been friendly and quick. First time I tried a Himalayan veggie dish and second time we had the samosas, vege biryani, garlic nan, and an okra dish. I typically order Himalayan Kitchen off Uber eats, but today we called it in and picked it up since we were in the area. We had waited a good 30 mins after calling to pick it up, and it still wasn't ready. We probably waited over 15 mins after that in the restaurant. (They weren't that crowded btw, only had two groups seated when we came). We finally got our food and headed home. When we got home and started eating, our Chicken Tikka was not as good as it usually was and tasted very watered down. This was my first time here and I went with my partner to explore Kaimuki and the different flavors it had to offer. We didn't get to stay long to try Himalayan Kitchen's main entrees but we tried their sample platter of appetizers. The host and server were friendly and kind. They helped us by explaining what's on their menu. The server did a great job refilling water and serving us. The chicken tikka cubes were a little dry but still very tasty. The host told us pakora was a mix of fried vegetables. They weren't bad. They are very fried so it was almost like eating chips. I had my first Samosa and that was my favorite item on the platter. Really good! Himalayan Kitchen knows what they are doing with their breads. The naan bread was the most impressive. Easy to pull apart and filling. The bread went really well with the green sauce (I'm not sure what it's called but it tasted like cilantro, lime, and Jalapeños blended together). First time coming here and heard good reviews from a friend that brought us - 5 people for a 6:30pm reservation. The ambiance was amazing, we sat outdoors and the lights and music were great. It took us about 20 minutes or so to order and our server seemed to have paid more attention to the table behind us but we ended up ordering butter chicken, two different types of curries, rice, naan, and samosas as an appetizer. Thank goodness it is BYOB because the wine and conversation was what saved them from having us walk out. It took TWO HOURS for our food (including the appetizer) to come out..we didn't eat until 8:30pm or so. A big group was there but they left before we ordered so I'm not sure what the reason was for the wait. There were also groups that had reservations that had to stand around for 30 minutes or so just to get seen. Food: overall the food was alright but I've had better Indian food down the road. The butter chicken was watery, the naan has more flavor being burnt than seasoned, and the portions were just not filling. Overall: once again, us bringing our wine and chatting was what made the experience decent but we should have to wait TWO HOURS to receive food. And they never apologized or said it would take a while - and it took an extra 30 minutes to try to get our check. Came in at 6:30 and didn't leave til closer to 10pm. The Kaimuki location has been here for years now and has a lanai view overlooking the pickleball courts. I think they could maintain the place a little more, especially the garden and plant area and make it super cute. Park in the cheap the parking lot (literally a few dollars). Look for the cute boutique store Sugarcane and there are stairs tucked away down a little walkway. Take the stairs up to the 2nd floor and you'll find Himalayan Kitchen. read more

My favorite place for Indian food on the island! I drive from the North Shore to Kaimuki for tis restaurant because the food and service are amazing. It has a cool vibe and the owner or manager always comes over to make sure everything is perfect. I have never had a bad experience and recommend this place to everyone. read more
