I wish I was making this up. Two days ago through Uber Eats my boyfriend ordered the chicken tikka masala curry (which comes with rice) and the garlic naan bread. The whole order came tightly wrapped in a plastic bag... with one complimentary FLY. It was hard to show it in the photo I took, but it was definitely flying around in the bag. We don't know how this wasn't noticed as the order was bagged up. We're pretty grossed out. But I'm not surprised: a couple of years ago when this restaurant opened I popped in looking for lunch. The door was propped open, food was uncovered behind the counter, and multiple flies were flying around. I left. I told my boyfriend this, but he really wanted to try their curry anyway. Not again, he said. However, the garlic naan bread was delicious (put into its own paper bag, so I deemed it was sanitary) but my boyfriend described the curry as not any better than the curry served at Whole Foods. I have been doing this long enough to know a few things. One bad meals does not indicate a terrible restaurant. But that said , the one time I ate here was TERRIBLE. A little background, I've been eating at and enjoying the original location in Kaimuki since it opened. The friendly owner and staff are familiar and it has been one of my neighborhood faves. I came to the Kailua shop for take out and ordered chicken vindaloo and rice, simple right? Wrong. So the chucked was cut into large chunks, it was chicken breast, dry, hard and tasteless, like chunks of wood. That should not be served, this is what happens when chicken is cooked, the refrigerated or frozen, then reheated several times thru this cycle. It was inedible. Likewise the rice was long grain, hard and dried out, no nice fresh rice smell, terrible texture. Very disappointing. One more comment, why does the sign read India Cafe, when the business is listed as Himalayan Kitchen? For the past 20 yrs these have been two different businesses. I recently visited this Indian restaurant and was blown away by the flavors of the dishes. I ordered the chicken tikka masala and the saag lamb, both of which were absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend ordering them with medium spice, as it adds just the right amount of heat without overwhelming the flavors. The saag lamb was a bit too spinach-y for my personal taste, but it was still a satisfying dish overall. I paired both dishes with two orders of plain naan, which were fresh and delicious. However, make sure to ask for the mint sauce and chutney sauce as they don't give it automatically. To quench my thirst, I ordered the mango lassi, which my fiancé also really enjoyed. The lassi was creamy, smooth, and had the perfect balance of sweetness. Overall, I would definitely recommend this Indian restaurant to anyone looking for authentic, flavorful Indian cuisine. The chicken tikka masala and saag lamb are both must-try dishes, and make sure to pair them with some naan and the delicious mint and chutney sauces. Best naan EVER! Get one per person. Get an extra one to eat with breakfast tomorrow. So good. So soft. I eat it from the bag on the drive home when it's hot. I just can't wait. I even order plain or garlic naan to compliment other dinners we make when we have company over. It is basically the best bread in Kailua and goes with every kind of dinner! Making roast chicken and need fresh bread? The naan is perfect for this. It's SOOOO good with everything. Salads, steak, cheese plates... We get take out from here every other week or so. Love the palak paneer, the korma curry, the chicken tikka kebab. Samosa are stuffed with so much deliciousness, flaky homemade crust. We get spice level 7 which is the perfect number for medium++ spicy. They nail the spice level every time. Place is always busy. Call 30-45 min before you want to pick it up. I pass this place all the time and finally decided to try it! It was a little confusing, since the big sign out front says "India Café" so when I looked it up on Yelp, it took me a minute to realize it is the same place. I honestly had no idea their official name was "Himalayan Kitchen." We were coming back from the beach and wanted something quick and easy. We haven't had Indian food in a long time, so decided to give this place a try. Ordering on the phone was super quick and easy, they have a great deal with their lunch special and the food itself was delicious! I really liked that they catered the dish to your spice preference, since my husband and I are total opposites. I think pepper is too spicy and he likes it HOT. We wanted to try something different for the weekend outing, so we yelped and found this Indian restaurant. We drove from Pearl City to Kailua just to venture out. This was a small restaurant in a shopping center where Foodland is. Ample parking in the area. The restaurant had a few tables inside and outside. When we walked in no one was there, except the customers eating. We waited for a few minutes until a man walked out of the kitchen. The service here is quite odd. They serve us our food but we get our own water and utensils that are on the side. There was a lot of options on the menu. We decided on the dishes that seemed appealing. Our food took a while but it came out fresh and hot. - Veggie Samosa - pretty big pieces that cost $3.50 for 2. The wrap was thick and crispy. Came out hot. Flavored very good. Sauce was great with the samosa. Would order this one again but with meat next time. - Garlic naan - a huge piece of naan bread with garlic and sesame seeds on top. A little burnt though. The bread wasn't thick. - Chicken tikka - chicken had an interesting flavor. The meat was a bit dry. Rice was cooked well. There was a side that looked like curry with chickpeas. There was also a side of salad. I would come again for the food. I rather do take out next time though. Definitely come back for the naan bread and samosa. read more

First time eating here, ordered via DoorDash, and I was happy with our food experience! We ordered the creamy bhunas with chicken (no spice), garlic Naan and Himalayan curry with lamb (level 5 spice). The garlic Naan was absolutely delicious! I could've done a double order of that for my wife and I. Both curries were good, but there are chunks of star anise in them that I wasn't aware of until I bit into it, twice. My wife bit into 3 chunks in her curry. I understand they add great overall flavor in the dish, but biting into the whole chunks is unpleasant. I'm a fan of spicy food, and the level 5 spice was pretty darn spicy for me. Not unbearably so, but enough that I was reaching for the water with haste. If you're not a spice junkie, beware that anything above 6-10 may melt your face off. Overall, very happy with Himalayan Kitchen and will probably eat here again. read more

So I thought I was going to India Cafe because of the signage. I noticed the sign in the way to my Rolfing massage. I just knew today was the day to satisfy my Indian food craving. To my surprise this was Himalayan Kitchen when I sat down. I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo medium spice which comes with Basmati Rice $16.95 and I couldn't resist the $3.50 Garlic Naan. What a great lunch! I was not disappointed at all. It's always best to come with several people when eating Indian Food so you can order a variety, however, I was solo today. They do offer lunch specials from 11am-3pm. I'm not sure if that includes weekends since I didn't order from that today. I can never resist Lamb Vindaloo. Very nice gentlemen who took our phone order and served us. I had the veggie curry, level 8 spicy and basmati rice. Very good but not very spicy, I don't know if it was mixed up with another order because once opened not all the items were correct. We also had naan and samosas. Both were disappointing, especially the samosas. The batter was way too thick and made it taste cheap. Regularly samosas are one of my favorites too. Need to find a better Indian restaurant on the island however I would give this place one more chance. Just no samosas. read more

So ono this place. Idk why I crave buttter chicken so much and I've only had it once. So this is my second time trying this. It's so ono. Perfect amount of spice. Perfectly rich. So much flavor. Got it with the garlic nan. But I should have got some rice too. Especially in Hawaii would be even better with 2 scoops of rice to soak up every flavor of this dish. I recommend this spot. I've been to Himalayan Kitchen in Kaimuki more than a few times. When they were part of the United mileage plus program, my family would go almost weekly. I'm pretty familiar with the food and I like what they have to offer. But I was near Kailua and wanted take out and didn't realize Himilayan Kitchen has opened a second location. Intrigued, I called to make an order and went to pick up my food later that night. The menu is much smaller than the Kaimuki location. This isn't a bad thing. I like the variety at the kaimuki location, but I always end up getting the same things, so a smaller menu doesn't really matter to me in this case. I ordered a couple different flavored naan breads, the chicken tikka madras curry and an order of samosas. I liked that the curry comes with basmati rice, so for $14, it didn't seem too expensive. The samosas were just as I remembered them. There excellent, full of stuffing, crispy on the outside and the dipping sauce is phenomenal. I was a bit confused about the signage. They are located right next to Kailua Times. In a storefront that says "India Cafe". Confusing..... The person answering phones, ringing people up and taking orders from "walk-Bys" was nice. They aren't open for regular dining, which is ok because it looks like the restaurant only sits a handful of people anyway. I'll probably be back here, himilayan kitchen is one of the only places that offers Indian curry on the island. I'm glad they opened in Kailua. read more

This place has a great location, right in the heart of Kailua town, tons of free parking, close to the beach - directly next to Times. We came here in the middle of COVID-19 quarantine and got chicken vindaloo and chicken tikka masala with basmati rice and a side of garlic naan. The food was super delicious and the guys were really nice. We ended up wanting more basmati rice and they comped us! How awesome is that? Food appears to be made to order because it takes like 20 minutes to get your food, so do yourself a favor and call your order in before heading on down. It is well worth the trip! read more

Hmm... was expecting India Cafe but ended up in the Himalayas instead! Strangely the wait staff are the same but the menu is definitely from the Himalayan Kitchen that still has a restaurant in Kaimuki. Apparently the prior owner has left and now it's run by the Himalayan team. The space is also now cleared so that there are three small tables inside and two more outside. It also sports the bright Himalayan colors of orange, yellow and red. Food wise, we ordered the lamb biryani, butter chicken curry and garlic naan. All good and authentic. Will try the tandoori wraps the next time round. Would definitely recommend this place for authentic curries, tandoori, kebab, biryani and bread. It's even got a vegetarian selection! I dont usuallly eat Indian food but was looking for plain Naan bread. Just by chance while I was waiting in line For Donut King I saw this place. They recommend phone or online orders, which I did. And since we live in Kaneohe, by the time we drive over, the order is ready. I think the prices are reasonable for the size of the bread. I got vegetable korma and added paneer for a $1 up charge. They clearly made the paneer in-house. So good!! Fresh vegetables in the korma were zucchini and carrots. I have not been to their Kaimuki restaurant and I always waited to visit there so I went in to order take out for one curry and two kinds of bread to share with my child. It was about 5:30pm on Sunday and I understand it was busy time. But it took 45 minutes even though he told me it would be 20 minutes. There were still so many people waiting and a couple of bite squad included. Some couples left after waited for a while without been helped. I bought both shrimp and chicken Madras curry (coconut and tomato flavors) with rice and plain and jalapeño garlic naan . All was amazing! I prefer take out because the location is very small. The store is also located in a busy touristy center so finding parking is a little hard. The customer service is amazing and every time I try a new dish it's always delicious. ABSOLUTELY DISAPPOINTED!!! We used to love ordering from here, but tonight was horrible. We called in our usual order at 6:20pm. A chicken tikka plate and couple of orders of aloo gobi. We were told it would be about 45 min (which we've become accustomed to). We got down there in about an hour (coming from Kahalu'u). I walked up to the door and the young woman working in front was very rude to the customer she was dealing with. She was scolding him because his order was under the wrong name. Also, when the customer told her that he paid online, she yelled at him saying " YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME THAT BEFORE I STARTED RINGING YOU UP!" Now it was my turn and our interaction was ok. It could have been worse. I got my order and went back home...opened up the containers and the whole order was wrong. I've tried to reach out to management about this, but have had no success. read more

First off, next to times Kailua; if your face the store it'll be on the right side a few shops down. Their sign hasn't been changed yet so you may see India Cafe. I loved it! Love the service too!!! It's a small restaurant about 4 small tables inside 4 outside. I recommend to order appetizers and come with A good attitude, book or if you like to scroll on your phone then that because it's a small crew. That being said you may have to wait a bit if their busy. Bring patience hehe To me it's worth it! I waited less than 10 min for my fritters and 5 minutes later my food was out. I came on a Sunday afternoon. The curry is thick; I got mine with lamb; it was good but I realized it Didn't need meat it was good on its own. I loved the garlic Naan hope I spelled that right. I ate like a piggy I hope no one who knows me seen me eating hahaha It has a mom & pops feel, I got my own plate and water let me be clear though the owner is very attentive & super friendly; I feel spoiled. He treated each customer the same. I watched as a few customers asked a ton of questions, a few repeat ones & even compared to other foods and gladly answered with a big smile. Im coming back! Unfortunately I wasn't able to take pics of the food which makes me pretty sad because it was delicious! The lamb biryani is divine. Highly recommended! It was flavorful, with a good amount of meat. The portion was pretty generous. The raita that came with it was nice and creamy. Great to take the edge off of the biryani spice. We also had the chicken vindaloo which was flavorful but found the chicken breast pieces to be too large and a bit dry. The size of the potatoes was much smaller than the chicken. I really wished it were a bit more uniform. It came with basmati rice. I do so appreciate that they separate the entree from the rice. The garlic naan-chef's kiss. Had to get 2 because I wasn't about to share. I ordered the paneer kulcha but they either forgot to give that to me or they may have given it to someone else's takeout order. I was really looking forward to having it but by the time we discovered that it was missing it was too late to go back. Lost money on that. It's a smaller space and they only do takeout which is fine but when it get busy be prepared to wait around 45 minutes to an hour. I was told about 30-35 mins but they were fairly busy with the doordash/ubereats orders. The food is all made to order so it does take some time to get things pushed out of the kitchen. Overall I'd recommend this place. The food is flavorful and a satisfactory amount. The gal who took the orders and passed out the orders was friendly and welcoming.
