It was my first time eating Indian food. I've always heard that it was spicy and spicy is not my cup of tea. My hubby had Indian food before and said that I should try it after we left the Convention Center this past weekend. I was willing to give it a try. The food was actually really good. This little but mighty place is super yummy. If you are headed to the mall or DMV make time to try this place out. The stuffed naan was sooo good, such a great twisted to regular naan and so many different flavors of it to try! It pairs great with your curry dish as well. My chicken curry was sooo flavorful and they added just the right kick of spice for me! Which is super spicy! My friend and I stopped by the Himalayan Kitchen at Ala Moana Center on Sat., 11/30/24 for a late lunch, around 1:30p. We sat inside of the restaurant. The music playing was melodic and set the ambiance for our dining experience. This was the first time my friend would be having Nepalese/Indian cuisine. I've had it many times on Oahu, Portland, and even London, as well as home made by my Nepalese friend. I suggested having Samosas, and Lamb Saag, and told her to choose a dish on her own, she ordered the Lamb Naan. I also suggested the Butter Chicken, since that is what people who've never experienced Nepalese/Indian food gravitate, too. She declined the latter, and wanted to start off with flavors similar to what she is used to. I ordered the Lamb Saag at a 5 out of 10 spice level, where 10 would be extremely spicy. It was the perfect amount of spice for me. It was too hot for my friend. She enjoyed the flavors of the Saag, though. We both agreed that the spinach and spices were so creamy with the tender lamb. The Basmati rice was also the perfect accompaniment, to the Lamb Saag, as it enveloped the spices of the Saag. That is why this is my favorite Nepalese/Indian dish. The Samosas had a great potato filling and we both finished it off with the cilantro chutney dipping sauce. My friend also enjoyed the Lamb Naan. The lamb filling was tasty and the naan was warm and freshly baked. The food was excellent, and the service was friendly as well. My friend and I will be back to Himalayan Kitchen and she can try the Butter Chicken and I will order the Lamb Saag once again. read more

Came here for the first time tonight for something to warm me up from this dreary weather we've been having. Seemed like a two-person operation but even though they were short-staffed, the service was excellent. The lady working was so attentive, seemed to anticipate what we needed and checked on us. Since we had a small table, her serving style was smart and helped us maximize the space of our table. My friend had the chicken tikka masala and I had the lamb bhuna. I gotta say, I'm really impressed with how much lamb my curry had. Most other places just give you 4-5 pieces cubed, but the lamb in this curry tasted like it was slow cooked, so it melted in my mouth as I ate. And there were so many pieces. Same with my friend's chicken Tikka masala. The food was flavorful and great portion. I had enough to take home for lunch tomorrow. Will definitely be coming back! read more

My grandfather was excited to take my honey and I to Himalayan kitchen on a Monday night, and it was pretty busy for a weeknight at the mall! We found parking easily and were welcomed to seat ourselves. Favorites from the menu include lamb madrass and the fish korma, although we opted for shrimp because they were out. We also tried the lamb buhma for the first time and it was our favorite bite (if you love garlic!). The garlic naan is always hot and delicious and this location provides jasmine rice with every entree (I think it's Ala carte in kaimuki). Servers are friendly and attentive, and our only complaint was a long wait time, but to be expected as the food is all made to order. I approached the entrance and was asked where I wanted to sit. I decided to sit one of the few small tables inside even though it was hot. The server promptly served me a glass on ice water and kept refilling it. I looked over the menu and ordered the lamb coconut curry and a mango lassi. The drink was delivered followed by the lunch dish a few minutes later. I have had better mango lassi at other places. It was not as thick and tasty as I expected. They did not skimp on the meat in the lamb curry; it was full of tasty lamb chunks. It came with white basmati rice but no veggies or salad. I guess those needed to be ordered separately. The portion was more than I could eat at that time, could not finish all the rice. I saw their Tandoori chicken dish being served to another patron. It was on a sizzling dish and looked really good. I thought to myself, I should have ordered that dish (not to take anything away from the lamb curry, it was delicious). Wait time varied from 15-30 minutes - usually accurate except for one instance - depending on when I ordered. Himalayan Kitchen's first location in Kaimuki is excellent and I've seen mixed reviews on Yelp for the AMC locale. The most recent takeaway consisted of Chana Aloo ( chickpeas and potatoes in a tomato-based sauce ) and Garlic Naan Bread. Requested a spice level of 1 for the Chana Aloo because I've tried their 7 - for their mixed vegetable curry- and it was nearly too much for me, bordering on too spicy to enjoy. 8+ will mean suffering, sweating, swearing, and...well, imagine the end result...yes, more suffering. Unfortunately, I did not receive a spice level fit for a child but what was closer to a 7. There was a phone order while I was waiting to make my own and they must have gotten our orders switched up. Garlic Naan was okay...can't go wrong with a warm naan. Cheese naan from a previous order was also average. Samosas were very good and their mint sauce was excellent. The food is amazing and flavorful. We had the saag dip, Kathmandu Chicken Chili, and a serving of the garlic naan bread. It's just a symphony of different spices and flavors and we enjoyed all of it. That naan bread, I'm telling you, is just nice and chewy in texture and flavorful in garlic in all the right ways. A lot of the dishes are saucy and we just wiped it right up with the naan to savory each drop and morsel. The only issue we encountered was the waiting time for our order to arrive. I mean, we waited a while, to the point where my partner and I thought they forgot about us. The baby sister restaurant to the original Kaimuki location, this Himalayan Kitchen may be smaller but no less packing a punch when it comes to those familiar spicy notes and tantalizing aromas. There's limited indoor seating and a handful of outdoor tables that look out over Ala Moana's makai parking lot. Still, we noticed a steady stream of take out orders being filled and customers walking in unannounced just like us on a Thursday evening. Our order: papadam's -- those thin lentil crackers dotted with cumin seeds; two golden fried samosas filled with a mix of creamy potatoes and peas accompanied by a cilantro yogurt sauce and a spicy tomato chili. Scrumptious! My dining companions went with the masala chicken and I ordered the aloo gobi, a vegan curry of cauliflower, potatoes, onions, tomato and spices. An order of basmati rice and plain naan gave us the starch to sop up all those delicious curry right to the last drop! Service was helpful and friendly if not super quick since the kitchen was busy filling all those takeout orders. Still, I can't complain. Saturday at Ala Moana Center and we were hungry. Lunch at the Himalayan Kitchen was perfect. The restaurant is usually busy with two tables indoor and the remaining tables were outdoor. We were lucky to sit at a table for two indoor. The server seemed quite busy and I think it was only him. Take out is available so several people did that. For lunch we had the Chicken Tikka Masala with a spice level of 5. We also ordered the Mixed Vegetable Curry with spice level of 5. Both came with rice. In addition we ordered the Garlic Naan which I think they forgot and we were half-way done with our meal when it was brought to our table. It was very delicious and great to dip in the curry sauce. I have been to the Kaimuki location but first time to this newer Ala Moana location. If I could give half stars I'd say this location gets 3.5 stars. The location is good and bad. On the plus side great to have Nepalese and Indian food option at the mall! Understandably the rent is high so there is limited seating inside, I think two tables for 2 and one 4 seat table. There are outside seating but the bad thing is it's right next to the parking lot and people walk by without any dividers. I wouldn't bring a date to this location for a romantic dinner but otherwise for casual get togethers it is fine and great for take out. I went on a Friday during the day and no one else was eating there but people were getting takeout. The service was good since it wasn't busy. I love samosas so had to get those for any appetizer. It came with two large ones which were stuffed so you get your money's worth! The outside dough could've been crispier and flakier, but as a whole they were very satisfying. The chicken tikka was not the best I've had but sauce was tasty. Wanting to try something different I got the Kathmandu lamb chili, spiciness level 3. I like spice but even at a 3 it was a good amount of heat while not overpowering the flavor so be aware of that when you select your spiciness level (1-10). This was very flavorful with an initial sweet taste that quickly turns into a sour taste. It reminded me of a sweet and sour dish but more on the sour side and reminded me of Filipino food. It came with carrots, onions and bell peppers. It was good to try something different! The serving sizes are pretty small for the price though the flavors pack a punch which leaves you satiated. Not a place I can afford to eat on the regular but great for a occasional treat meal! Hidden at the bottom of the escalators near the fountain by Assagio in Ala Moana Center. The inside of the restaurant is small and can hold small parties. Outside seating can accommodate more people but the lighting isn't the greatest due to the structure of Ala Moana's parking garage on the lower level. The owner, I think, runs around taking orders over the phone, serving dine in guests, attending to walk in take-out orders and 3rd party delivery orders, and all things in the restaurant. And while I saw some exhaustion, he did it all with a smile and provided great service both times that we visited the restaurant. The food is the same from when I first visited the restaurant last year and last night. This review has pictures of food from when we visited last year. Shrimp Salad: Loved the Tandoori grilled shrimp. Mango Lassi: A bit more tangy than I remember it to be. Gulab Jamun: This dessert was so good. I hate when I have to do this to any business, but I also can't lie about any experience. Hopefully it was a one off, but now based on other reviews I'm not sure. Anyways let's start with the positive. Food had a good spice kick to it. That's it. I arrived at around 7:10 pm got seated and left there with menus until about 7:30 pm I waived and waived at the server so many times it even became a joke for us how hard and even funny things I was doing. Huge red flag but we were hungry and wanted Nepali food so we stayed. One we ordered we didn't get our food until 8:06 pm. Only two other tables were filled the entire time and they already had food when we got there so no idea what they were doing all of this time. I tried to give the benefit of the doubt and said " they must be making it fresh made to order." Of course we had to try the momo and was very disappointed. It was not freshly made which is understandable I've made them myself and they do take lots of work. I'm no expert, but the way they were cooked looked like frozen bought dumplings that were microwaved! (Picture shows the dry hard crunchy edges) They are supposed to be steamed and the only time I had any dumplings or momos that had hard crunchy dough is when I have microwaved them. Never when steamed. The chicken biryani had good spice but the rice was all broken like old rice mixed with a chicken curry and then that made their biryani. Again I tried to make this dish and definitely did not come out this bad. Last thing I hate raisins in food and the biryani had lots of them. I don't remember the last time I had to pick out and ingredient from my food. Probably when I was a little kid. Anyways I digressed, I just never had biryani with raisins and canned corn. Tho their defense anyone can have different recipes. This one hands down was my least favorite. Our go to restaurant for Himalayan food! We usually go to their Kailua location (since that location is my favorite one) but their Kaimuki location is also popular. Their newest location is located on the ground floor of Ala Moana shopping center, right next to Assagio's. They have about 3 tables inside and about 5 tables outside. Since there was five of us, we sat on the big table inside. We were the only ones there at first, but soon after all the tables filled up. For appetizers, we ordered the momos and saag dip. A momo is their version of a "gyoza", very tasty! And saag dip is spinach and cream cheese that comes with a deep fried bread. Then for the main dishes we got their shrimp biryani, Everest sekuwa, fish tikka masala, Chana aloo, and garlic & jalapeño naan. And I got their mango lassi which is a yogurt drink. The poor manager had to put in take-out and dine in orders, wait tables & everything else so the service was slow, but they're still working out their kinks since they just recently opened so hopefully they will be able to get more help. Their Instagram account @himalayankitchenhawaii notes it's Nepali and Indian fusion. Well this super tiny nook on the street level in Ala Moana Center somehow manages to make room for tables indoors and outdoors as well and serves up some incredible dishes all made to order. I was so excited to give them a try and knew we had to get naan and they have plain of course but eight other types we decided on getting the Chicken Tikka Naan and it was phenomenal as it's stuffed with their grilled chicken tandoori and onions...oh so much flavor! We also couldn't resist the Himalayan Spring Rolls (shredded cabbage, onions, carrots seasoned in mild spices) is vegetarian though I don't know what kind of sauce it came with and just can't describe it but loved it!!! Then we both decided to get Curry I got the Lamb Vindaloo and Chicken Vindaloo for my friend, I didn't know what's the difference other than the menu stating cooked with potatoes and light touch of vinegar with chef's special spices sounded so amazing. I got it with medium heat as recommended and mild for my friend though we were told the spices that's already in the dish could be spicy for some sensitive palate. Honestly the medium wasn't hot for me personally though the mild was still spicy for my friend but she thoroughly enjoyed it along with a bowl of rice which wasn't noted anywhere on the menu. The meat ratio is insane and so much so that the next time we both said we'd like to try the Mixed Vegetable Curry as we were craving more veggies with the meat overload. We thoroughly enjoyed it all and how it's all made with the region spices is incredible I couldn't get enough of the sauce which for me was the highlight not the lamb lol!! All this made to order meal is so reasonable and having some seating provided is a great touch, the inside isn't air-conditioned so here in Hawai'i the outside is the best option even with the parking lot view. My husband and I were craving Indian food and I'm so glad we discovered this place when we were at Ala Moana. We came here on a Saturday night and it wasn't really busy. We sat outside. And the table we sat at was dirty, it seemed like others sat there and wasn't cleaned when they left. Kinda makes you wonder what goes on in the kitchen if a simple task of wiping tables after each customer uses them isn't being done. I'd understand if they're crazy busy, but they weren't. But when we sat down, the server wiped the table. Then she gave us the menu and water. My go to Indian food is the butter chicken. So that's what I ordered for myself with the paneer naan. My husband and our friend had their own food but I forgot the names of their food. But they also ordered naan, hubby got the jalapeño garlic naan and our friend got the garlic naan. As for my butter chicken, it wasn't as creamy as I wanted it to be. And they used chicken breast, so the meat was a little dry. It's still good, but not as great as other places'. Their paneer naan -- absolutely delicious!! This was my favourite! Overall, I like the convenience of it. Plenty parking spaces and I'm sure you'll find a dessert place close by. It's a great location at Ala Moana with free and ample parking, plus tourists. Though limited seating and it gets very hot. First time I went I did take out. Ordered plain naan, samosa, lamb curry, and chicken tikka masala. In the beginning they didn't have their full menu. The food was alright. Felt like they gone downhill after a year. The curry and masala a bit salty. Service was very slow. Second time I came here I was planning to dine it. No reservations available. We called ahead to see if it was busy. The person on the phone said there were a lot of tables available. We got there in 15 minutes. They looked quite busy. The only table left was on the outside in the sun. We said we will wait since a table was about to leave. We waited 20 minutes for them to clean the tables and set up. There were two workers in the front. Not a big restaurant, but they were very slow. We left to go somewhere else since the food may take forever too. Not sure about this place. It better be my last resort to come back here. read more

And they didn't separate the orders. It could've been the deliverers fault or the one packing the food. But to make the long story short, I found a way to resolve the problem on my own. And the restaurant found a way to give me the other missing half of my order. Second time around, I was hesitant for mistakes but gave it try. Anyways, the food was satisfactory enough to go back too. So this time I placed my order, called the restaurant to confirm, and even left a note for the deliverer to check all items. I was craving Indian food and I must say this was more than amazing! There was a little kink with the kitchen and so our wait was a little long. However, the customer care we received was amazing. The owner (or manager) was very kind, he kept us updated and once they got stuff going our food came quickly. We ordered the mix Tandoori, Veggie Samosas, Chicken Madrass, and of course the Garlic Naan. Everything was beyond delicious. It feels like cafe style, seating outside. Third location of Himalayan Kitchen. It is in Ala Moana Center, next to the Satellite City Hall and Assaggio. The store is relatively small with only 5-6 tables. Outdoor seating with another few tables. I haven't been to other locations so not sure if the menu is the same but they do have a good selections, especially for vegetarians and vegans. And they are all delicious. For entrees we tried saag paneer and Kathmandu chicken chili. Saag paneer was very creamy and the cheese was a bit chewy and they complement each other so well. Perfect to go with rice. Kathmandu chicken was a tad too spicy even though we requested spicy level 1 but it was still absolutely delicious and we couldn't help but finished it despite our tongues on fire. To lightened the meals a bit we ordered Raita (yogurt dish) and Indian onion salad. Both were so refreshing and perfect to balance a spicy meal. I'm not kidding the dressing for the salad was one of the best I've ever had! Some reviews said the service could be slow since they just opened but it was ok when we went. Went during their first week opening, a bit of learning pain going on. They are located in the small corner by assagios where the old Chinese chop suey place used to be next to the new satellite office. They have a decent amount of seating both inside and maybe 14 people inside. Food took 30ish min to get out because the kitchen seemed a little backed up with the training of new people (servers and kitchen staff) Despite them getting things out of the kitchen at a slower pace with take out orders and people sitting dine in, the food was of the same quality as their other locations. The garlic naan was nice and crispy and huge. Ordered the lamb biriyani at level 5 spiciness (out of 10) it was a slow burn and I could feel the beads of sweat starting to form on my head almost half way through. Located in Kaimuki off of Waialae Ave, with a parking lot behind restaurants and on street parking, the parking lot is run by a parking company. They have other locations, the one in Kaimuki accepts pets. They do not take reservations and first come first serve. This was the first time I've eaten Himalayan food and found that the food was very tasty and flavorful. The Padadum was very good and tasty! Business at Ala Moana mall is closed. Some kind of law suit paperwork on the door. Went to Namaste instead and it was fabulous .

I was in a rush when I called over the phone and placed my order. When I got there and found they'd forgotten to place the order I was a bit sad but no worries, right? Well the staff went above and beyond to make it right. Prioritized getting it done over the other orders and gave me a bit extra to make up for it. I was impressed with their dedication to make things right and then some. Samosas are very delicious, but the cilantro chutney to dip it in really makes it shine. Also love the naan as always. Appetizer Himchuli chat (Himali fav) Slightly spicy. Sooo declious (mouth drooling emoji). First time having this and we wanted to order another. Lol Himalayan naan was good, just a lot going on. It could be a meal on its own. Entree Shrimp bhuna was yummy! Butter chicken. The chicken was pretty dry. Mixed biryani had lamb, shrimp, and chicken. I walk past this place all the time and have been dying to try it. I'm torn to do this review so if you read it take it with a grain of salt. It's at the bottom level of Ala Moana, right below Macys and next to Assagios and it's only outdoor seating so you're sitting in a parking garage basically. They disclose that everything is made to order so you should assume that it will take a while. It took a LONG while. I would say almost 45 minutes. Ordered shrimp curry and chicken tikki masala. And a side of naan bread. The naan was perfect!!! I asked for no spice for the masala which may have been a mistake since Indian food is supposed to have a spice but I can't do super spicy. I put a chuck of chicken with sauce in my mouth and regretted it. My upper lip started sweating and I didn't want to eat anything more. Good thing my daughter didn't mind switching. The shrimp curry was very good. Not too spicy. Everything is served with balsamati rice. They should find another spot because the fumes from all the cars and honking is annoying. read more

The food here was OK. Nothing was hot, even though they claim its made to order. Our Neal's came out in less than 10 minutes, so we were a little skeptical. The chicken pieces were large, but they were dry. The samosas and sauce were the best part, but they were ice cold inside. It's in the parking garage of the Ala Moana Center near the DMV, so it's kind of loud and limited seating indoors. read more

i was so sad to have such a below average experience here. I remember visiting the Kaimuki location in 2020 and really enjoying it but this time it was just not it. I did a giveaway on my Instagram and wanted to buy my winner a gift card. I visited the kaimuki location and the worker told me they only have gift cards at the ala moana location. We went a couple days later and the same worker told me that they now only have the gift cards at the kaimuki location, not the ala moana one. Nonetheless we still dined in hoping for a better experience. We got the Veggie Madras, Butter Chicken, Paneer Naan and a side of rice. We had originally ordered sticky rice but they had run out so we got the regular rice instead. The naan came and it was quite burnt in multiple places - some of the parts were so burnt that it was like the texture of a cracker; virtually falling apart in my hands. I looked for the paneer cheese but couldn't find any. I asked the worker and she told me it was the paneer naan but after showing her there was no cheese she told me she'd check with the kitchen... and then never came back to tell me the status. It wasn't until a good 10 minutes later that she brought out the actual paneer naan without any apologies or explanations. The regular naan and paneer naan looked completely different and my mum and I wondered how the mix up even happened with such distinctly different dishes. The veggie madras was creamy and slightly sweet with a generous portion of vegetables, and the butter chicken also had tons of flavor. However, the chunks of chicken were incredibly dry. The food wasn't as impressive as I remembered it to be, and the portions seemed a little smaller. It was a pretty disappointing experience and I don't know if I could recommend them to anyone - at least not this location. read more
