The restaurant was pretty empty when we went, so the service was fast and attentive, and all of the food came out fresh, flavorful, and well presented. They also brought complimentary bread, which was a nice touch. What stood out the most was the value. For the amount of food we got, the prices were very reasonable for the area. We ordered chili chicken, biryani, and two orders of momos, and the biryani "for two" honestly could have fed four people. Even after all three of us ate, we still had enough leftovers for two or three full meals. Overall, really good food, generous portions, and a great value. Glad we gave this place a try. read more

In U.S. it is difficult to find dishes featuring Yak, wild boar, goat organs. So you know how excited I was when I came across this restaurant. Immediately made a reservation for dinner, though it turned out that the restaurant had lots of empty seats (at 7:30-8:30pm). The dishes I tried: 1. Complimentary Sel Roti: fried rice flour "bagel". Crispy outside, sticky and soft and sweet inside. It was served with some Mula Achar (pickled radishes), whcih was too salty for me. 2. Roti: Feels like it is not whole wheat, unlike the rotis in many Indian restaurants. 3. Roasted Yak: I asked for rare and the restaurant did a good job. The meat was lean but very tender. A little bit gamy which was what I look for. It was served with brown and red sauces; both sauces were spicy, while the red was also slightly sweet. 4. Goat Bhutan: Basically fried goat intestine, goat stomach and goat liver, served with raw tomatoes, onions and puffed rice. Mostly crispy, like it was shallow-fried. The organs were delicious but too oily for me. 5. Brussels sprouts: It was said to be pan-fried but looked like roasted. Savory and sweet. Service was good and quick. A local friend had suggested I have a meal at this restaurant, and I confess that the opportunity to have yak momos was a big part of wanting to visit. We came here late afternoon on a weekday for an early dinner. It was very quiet and relaxing at that time, with pleasant background music and excellent service. We went the "carnivore route" wity yak momos, lamb saag, and skewers of wild boar cubes. We said the food could come out in any order, and the momos actually came out last, because they were prepared to order. The sauce accompanying them was different than the momo sauces I've had at other Nepalese restaurants, but it still enhanced the flavor of them. The lamb saag was intensely green, reflecting a very high amount of fresh spinach. The boar was both crisp and juicy. We were also given some kind of complimentary rings as an alternative to naan. It was pretty difficult to eat all of this slowly, it was so flavorful. The restaurant is a few blocks away from the nearest Metro station, and approaching it from the south, you won't necessarily see it until you get close, because the front of the building is recessed from the street. read more

Came by on a special night where they were offering 50% off the entire menu so we got to try a bunch of different things! - kale chaat: 8/10 delicious, light, easy to eat a lot of. Not as strong in spices as Indian chats - wild boar: 9/10 delicious skewers seasoned perfectly! Tasted almost like pork belly. Crispy fatty goodness. - chatpatey: 9/10 very authentic, spicy with green chilies. Had raw chickpeas which I've only ever had at home. Spices are perfect, just spicy enough to have a kick, had tons of goat meat. I can't say enough good things about this. Made top 2 dish of the night. - braised yak: 9/10 this was really good! Very tomatoey and complex in flavor. Would get again for sure. - kurauni: 8/10 a little too sweet for my taste but I loved this, its made of milk solids. I have been wanting to try this place because they had yak meat and seemed to have some really good food. I finally came here and started with the yak momo. I thought the yak momo was great. It tastes like ground beef and was slightly chewier. It also came with a tasty sauce. We received some bread to the table that came with pickled cucumbers, which were both tasty. My friend and I also got a separate Nepali set tha came with aloo gobi, daal, spinach, rice, the sauce from the yak momos and our choice of chicken/lamb/paneer/yak curry. I went with the chicken and my friend went with lamb. I would definitely choose the lamb one next time. We had plenty of leftovers for future dinners. The service was slightly slow at times, but they made up for it for the food. The ambiance is great. There was plenty of space between tables, which was great. This is a neighborhood gem. We've only gotten takeaway so I cannot speak to the ambiance inside, but it did look full early on a rainy Friday evening. The food is really good, high quality chicken. Takeaway is ready very fast, at least for the dishes we got. The butter chicken was good, not at all spicy though if that's your jam. Himalayan Wild Yak opened up its Arlington location (with its OG location in Ashburn) a few months ago and I waited for the hype to die down a bit before giving it a try. My work friends and I had a hard time finding parking in the area, so we had to park ~15 minute walk away. The interior is spacious and modern with the perfect AC to cool us down. YAK MOMO (8 PIECES) - 14 The momos were steamed perfectly with a wrapper that isn't too thick or thin, and each one contained a generous amount of yak meat. It was delicious and hearty, and I'd highly recommend this. NEPALI SET MEAL (YAK) - 24 This came with yak curry?, cauliflower and potato curry, lentils, and spinach. There was a sauce/dip and some rice on the side as well. I enjoyed the sides a lot. I honestly didn't know if I enjoyed the lentils or spinach more. Everything was well-seasoned with unique flavors of their own. However, I didn't like the yak curry as much as I thought. It was overly fatty to the point where it was no longer enjoyable. If I get the set meal again, I would try a different protein option. We went with yak this time because we wanted to try as many yak options as possible. GOAT CURRY - 22 The goat curry came with a generous amount of goat chunks, almost like a stew. It also came with a small pot of white rice. I enjoyed the rich flavors of the curry, and the goat flavor wasn't too gamey, and it was very tender. Some pieces contained a bit of cartilage and fat, which gave it an extra chewy texture here and there that was delicious. I enjoyed this, and would recommend it, but found it a bit too fatty. Food was pretty good, but a bit fatty. Overall, this was an affordable meal where we paid 22 per person (pre-tip) and still had ample leftovers. I can't wait to go back! Of course it's good, Nepalese food is always good, but I gotta give huge brownie points for the new experience, providing me with the opportunity to try yak! I will say, I think I liked my wife's yak korma more than my yak shank so that's more of a testament to how amazingly delicious her dish was especially when we add in our own touch of raisins. The dessert was also something new, imagine rice pudding and flan had a baby in the Himalayas then add your own dash of cinnamon and sit back to take in the view with this simple homey treat. Now rewind to the beginning! That slightly sweet rice bread was so simple yet so captivating, it took all of my will power to save a little bit to clean up the end of the korma. I'm trying to decide if it reminded me of a more savory mochi or donut maybe. The yak momos livesld up to their reputation and were just as great as everything but the star of the show was definitely the wild boar! I got the cucumber cooler cocktail, and was actually pretty impressed with how good it was. My boyfriend and I got several dishes to share and everything was delicious! I definitely recommend the yak momos, with the jhol sauce, only wish they gave more jhol! We also got the palak chat, crispy pork belly, butter chicken, and goat curry. I tried this restaurant yesterday for lunch with my family for carryout. We had the butter chicken, chicken momo with chilli sauce, pork belly, garlic naan, and roti. The pork belly was the stand out dish. It was absolutely delicious, and we made little sandwiches of it with our garlic naan. The only downside was that some of the pieces were essentially all fat, but others had a good mix. The butter chicken (using dark meat) was pretty good, but not my favorite in the area. It was a little underseasoned, strong on the tomato flavor, and not as spicy as I had hoped. The momos were very tasty and very spicy, though, they lost most of their crunch on the way home. I didn't eat there, but the interior of the restaurant looked very nice. I'll go back and try the momos fresh. And get pictures next time. read more

Every team member here that we came in contact with was so kind. They were also extremely grateful for our support. The interior of the restaurant is cute and and modern, but in an inviting way. The restaurant is decorated with beautiful artwork, fresh flowers, and napkins with traditional Nepali patterns. The food was pretty good! I personally enjoyed the yak Momo the most. I also loved the garlic naan. The cauliflower curry was also good but probably best eaten at the restaurant (I ordered takeout). The sel roti and radish were also delightful. This location does not compare to the Ashburn location at all. I was really looking forward to coming here but was really disappointed by the service (or lack thereof) and the smaller menu. It was fairly busy on a Friday and we sat outside on a nice day. At first things were fast but by midway through the meal, the server could not be bothered. We started off with some drinks, the vegetable like meatball item and the momo sampler. When we went to order the momo sampler, the waiter was super confused on what we were talking about and was kind of rude. Our round of drinks were good (shout out to the old fashion) and they did give us an extra lo mein. Now on to the main meal- we got palik paneer, butter chicken, goat curry, and butter/garlic naan. I will say none of the food had any spice - they never even bothered to ask us if we wanted any heat in our food. Most of the food was very bland - while the saag was well put together, it lacked flavor. Even the butter chicken lacked flavor, and they almost forgot about it as well. The naan was somehow even worse - it was dry and crackled with every bite - usually naan is something I can gobble up but not this time around. At 9:15 (we sat at 7:45) we wanted one more round of drinks before closing out, we could not find our waiter. We looked around for them for 20 minutes and they finally brought out our drinks at 9:45. They came by at 9:50 to have us pay and promptly turned off all the lights and locked the door at 10PM (no warning or mention of this). At this point we had our whole table not bussed and one of our friends needed to use the restroom before hitting the metro. I am totally ok with them wanting to close on time but leaving us out there with no warning was a bit bizarre. I also asked the waiter, why do they not have the lamb saag that was my favorite dish in the Ashburn location and he basically just rolled his eyes at me and said "it's not my decision, I don't know" - I think honestly both the service and the food options/spice were so much better in the Ashburn spot. May have been an "off" night but not a fan of bland, tasteless Indian/Nepalese food. read more

Himalayan Wild Yak just opened last week in a beautiful modern space in Ballston. And they really do serve yak meat. Raised in the US, not imported from Nepal. And definitely not wild. As an appetizer we had dumplings filled with yak meat balls. In a tasty pinkish sauce. The waiter seemed surprised when we asked for hot sauce. Turns out the Nepali hot sauce is excellent -- and powerful. The yak was very tasty. The menu claims that yak meat is way better for you than beef. It may be true since it has very little fat -- think bison meat. It is not gamey at all. For the main course we plait a hue portion of curried goat and rice. It was excellent. I'd go back next time I'm in Ballston. read more

This is the 3rd restaurant by the original Royal Nepal owners and we've eaten at all of them! My partner and I started with her favorite Yak Mo Mo's (mine too). They are light and translucent and absolutely fabulous. We moved on to the Crispy Kale that will change any previous experience with kale you may had to a great one. We followed up with the Chow Mein and the Chicken Curry. Both a real experience. Try their wine selections as well. Dip is a sommelier after all and also mixes a great Old Fashioned! The space is crisp, clean and staffed by friendly, knowledgeable and helpful folks who all seem to love being there. This team is on their third restaurant and haven't missed a beat!
