Was looking for an Indian restaurant for my son's 21st birthday! I googled this place as we were in the area sight seeing, based off reviews decided to give it a try. Wow! The prices were reasonable as well. What a great choice, quite literally the best Indian food we've ever had anywhere, hands down! We had an appetizer; samosa chaat, so good and fresh! We had butter chicken as an entree which had the most amazing, creamy, smooth taste I've ever had, no one does it like that! Also got the tandoori paneer tikki, so good, cheese was smoky and melts in mouth, the cheese and butter naan we got was yummy as well! We got a birthday drink too which was quite refreshing. During the meal the owner stopped to see how the food was, I told him it was the best we've ever had, I told him we we're celebrating my sons birthday, at the end of the meal he surprised him with a cake and turned on happy birthday music playing throughout the speakers in the restaurant ! A true hidden gem! Himalayan Doko is my absolute favorite indian/nepalese place in the entire US (I travel a lot and indian food is usually a go-to of mine). The food here is extremely authentic and well seasoned I've eaten most of the lamb/goat dishes here and they're all phenomenal! The first time I came I believe my table had the goat curry, lamb curry, pani puri, samosa chaat, and butter chicken. And this time we got the goat sekuwa, lamb karahi, lamb thakali thali, and pani puri (again). I think it speaks volume about a place when the butter chicken (which is still great) is not the standout dish in a desi restaurant. And even then it's one of the most seasoned versions I've ever tasted. The dishes here are all amazing, flaborful, and not spicy (though I'm sure you can always ask about adding or taking away spice to the waiters). The service here is fast, there's never been a long line. And the place is very clean, spacious, and good for all ages. I cannot recommend this place enough, if you're debating whether or not you should come consider that debate over -- you're coming. read more

This is a small spot near the Word Planet museum, and we just happened to walk in as we were curious. Food - Good, the lamb rogan josh is quite good and the doko special thakali thali was great as well. Everything is a very big portion Service - can be a bit slow, but is fine nonetheless Parking - Can be a bit tricky as they do not have a parking lot. After a long day of walking around DC, this place was amazing! The building was unique looking and we wanted to see the mix of foods. Think I found a new lunch spot near the office! I've driven and walked past this place and have been wanting to try it. I took my co-worker here for a farewell lunch and we both enjoyed out meals very much. We both ended up getting a chicken dish and the flavors were great. The wait staff were attentive and the meal came out in time for us to enjoy our food and not feel rushed to get back to the office. Pretty spacious inside as well. I recommend the chicken thali, it's a platter that comes with dal, chicken, veggies (I don't remember the name of the side), achar (pickled veggies) and gulab jamun (fried dough in milk with cardamom). The first thing that hits you is their unique building -- super high ceilings, beautiful layout, and this absolutely gorgeous chandelier right in the middle that gives the whole place a warm, inviting vibe. The decor is on point: cozy, colorful, and full of character. Service was great too -- friendly, quick, and helpful without being over the top. Now the real star: the food. I tried the chilly chicken, chicken sakua, and their chowmein (yes -- chowmein, not the lomein you find everywhere else). The flavors instantly took me back to the street chowmein I used to have in Kolkata... that perfect mix of smoky, saucy, and nostalgic. But the highlight of the day? The momos. Both the chicken fried chilli momo and the steamed momo were fantastic -- juicy, flavorful, and honestly some of the best I've had in the US. And the portions? Huge! Absolutely delicious - closer to 4.4/5 but only because of some minor hiccups during pickup. I ordered the goat vindaloo and a house salad and thoroughly enjoyed them both! I'm in DC for work every year and will definitely add this spot to my list of DC staples (along with Tatte, Le Dip, and Barcelona Wine Bar for reference). This was such a comforting and warm meal taken to enjoy in my hotel and it heated up nicely the next day too. The rice was perfectly fluffy, the medium spicy was SPICY but that's on me for assuming, and the goat and veggies in the vindaloo were so tender! The side salad used fresh veggies (not a sad piece of lettuce in the entire mix!) and their dressing was delicious. Finally, the naan is one of the best I've had in a long time! If you're staying close by or need an impressive lunch takeout, try this spot!! The restaurant features some of the best momo i have had. We got the spicy vegetarian momo that were delectable. The place is warm and welcoming, and the service is good. Incredible Nepalese / Indian restaurant located in the heart of downtown DC. I visited this delightful little restaurant for a Friday dinner and was thoroughly impressed -- the food was fantastic, the service was friendly and efficient, and the space was lovely. The restaurant is divided into two spaces; there's a small waiting area immediately by the door, then a couple of steps that take you to the host stand and main dining area. The main area is quite cozy, with rows of comfy booths and standard tables arranged below a gorgeous pair of chandeliers. Each booth is adorned with a miniature blue and white glass lamp, which adds to the cozy, intimate, and slightly fancy vibes. My friend and I split the fish thali meal and vegetarian jhol momos. Both dishes were super flavorful and expertly prepared. The thali meal came with several small dishes around a bed of rice, including a fish curry, lentils, cauliflower curry; spinach, and single gulab jamun. Every item was delicious, and it was a great way to sample a wide variety of items. I was a bit surprised that nothing was spicy, but everything had a deep, rich, and complex flavor. Each dish was super unique, but they complemented each other well. Most of the items are standard across all of Himalayan Doko's thalis, but you can choose between fish, chicken, beef, or a vegetarian item for your main protein. The jhol momos were also fantastic; the dumplings were quite large and packed with veggies. The wrapper was thin and had a slight snap, and the soup was nice and very comforting on this cold winter evening. All around a great spot for a casual, comforting meal. We stumbled upon Himalayan Doko by accident, on a rainy evening walking around near our hotel. My husband LOVES Indian food - definitely his favorite cuisine so we popped in for an impromptu dinner. This was by far the best Indian experience we have had. The butter chicken was incredible - couldn't be better. We were fighting over the last bites and the sauce in the bowl. I had walked by the place before, but I underestimated how nice it would be inside. It was well attended for dine-in, and I rather wished I hadn't gotten takeout. The menu is Nepali and reasonably extensive. Characteristically, their spice levels do not mess around. I got the classic dumplings of the region sauteed in chili sauce, and that was a meal on its own. Nonetheless, I also got the daal, which was hearty and had curry leaves sauteed in among other spices. Again, I ordered it hot and it was. The soup I got was potato based, similar to curries that I've had at other Nepali restaurants, and a mint paratha was enough to mop up various leftover sauce. There aren't many times that I leave a restaurant and think "boy, I need a toothpick because I have a big piece of goat stuck between my teeth!" But Himalayan Doko is one of those restaurants. I think Himalayan Doko is a Nepalese restaurant that also presents a full range of Indian food. At least I think this is the case. There are definitely some obvious Indian dishes on the menu (butter chicken, biryani, etc) but I believe that the owner/chef is probably Nepalese. I say "probably" because the server did not respond when I asked that question. The language barrier could have been the issue or - I hope not - perhaps I was impolite. Not quite sure. At any rate, the goat dish was really good. The meat was so tender, so flavorful and the sauce was generous, complex and savory. With a little bit of beautifully prepared rice, each bite was perfect. This was the star of the show for both of us tonight. The other dishes were not as good. The lentils were a bit bitter to be honest. And the cauliflower/potato mixture with peas was not quite cooked to the correct softness. The portions are large. The vibe of the dining room is tired and old, definitely in need of updating. It is not up to modern DC standards. I would describe the service as adequate. Nothing beyond. For me, Himalayan Doko is not a place that I need to return to and I cannot recommend it unless you are dying for some Nepalese food. read more

This place is much bigger and nicer on the inside than it looks from the outside. Still casual, family dining atmosphere. Service was pretty attentive (maybe a little too much so) and I appreciate that the servers really know the menu in order to answer questions and make recommendations. The food is really, really good, and reasonably priced for this area taking into consideration portion size and value. We got the happy hour priced palak chat and samosas. The palace chat was the only thing I didn't like - fried too hard, but my husband had no issue finishing it on his own. I just feel like Rasika cracked the code on this and nobody else compares. The samosas were decent, warm and fresh. Pretty standard. The entrees are where it's at. My husband really enjoyed his lamb. He said the meat was buttery whatever that means. I got the paneer chilly (their spelling) from the Nepalese menu. Damn this was good. Imagine the best kung pao tofu you've ever had but sub in paneer. The portion was good, the heat level was perfect (a significant kick but it stops just before the line where it is too hot to taste anything), and the texture and veggies included in the sauce were really nice. Bar selection was also decent and it is pretty conveniently located from the metro. I think this is a good place to go if you are looking for a low frills but pleasant, easygoing meal with some fun flavors and a cold beer. read more

The flavors were bold and tasty, but a bit on the watery side. It seemed the ingredients were not the freshest. We also got the Chicken Momos with chilli sauce. The momos were well-steamed, but lacked flavor. The sauce made up for it, but, like the chaat, was a bit watery. I hope they are able to fix this issue with the food being on the dull side. The service was a bit on the slow side - I assume this restaurant gets lots of delivery orders to fill. However, the staff was very kind and accommodating. Coming to DC for work, I found Himalayan Doko a few blocks from my hotel, and I'm glad I chose to have dinner there. Had the chicken tikka masala, naan, and kheer for dessert. This place was simply amazing. The food was incredibly fresh and tasty. The dishes were all so flavorful. It was evident everything was slow cooked and prepared authentically with great attention. The menu is expansive with many options. For appetizers we had the samosas and the fried minis with spicy chile sauce, so incredibly flavorful. This location used to be Sakina Grill (RIP), which was a Pakistani restaurant. Himalayan Doko has the similar (but more toned down) decor, same decorative tables and overall ambiance, so they didn't seem to change much other than adding small booths on one side (an improvement!). Himalayan Doko still offers halal food! I chose the thali with chicken curry and I was extremely happy I did. It came with multiple items - chicken curry; aloo, mutter, gobi (potato, peas, cauliflower veggie curry); sautéed spinach (saag); mas ko dal (Nepalese dal); basmati rice; tomato chutney; a "salad" of cucumber, carrot and jicama; mulako achar (Nepalese radish spicy pickle with mustard seeds) and a sweet called lal mohan which is similar to gulab jamun but in a tangy yogurt sauce. It also came with papadum on the side. It was enough for very 1 hungry person plus some leftovers. Service was good, water was refilled and as a solo diner with AirPods in, they left to my own devices but checked in on me periodically. As I paid they asked me how I liked the food and were very gracious. I'd come back for the food for sure, it was filling, fresh, well spiced and hit all the right notes! - Quite a few food pickups by locals and couriers. I've been on the hunt for good Indian food in the DMV, and let's be honest -- a lot of places are either overpriced, serve tiny portions (looking at you, 8-12 oz entrees), or just miss the mark on flavor. Not this place! From the moment I walked in, I was impressed. The restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly, and my food was ready for pickup with zero wait time. Even better -- the portions are generous. Their regular entrees are a whopping 24 oz, and kids' meals come in at 16 oz. That's unheard of around here! I ordered the bone-in goat curry, the kids' butter chicken, and a roti. Everything was absolutely delicious. The sauces were rich and flavorful, and both the goat and chicken were perfectly tender. The price? Just $33.66 for all of that -- seriously great value for the quality and quantity. This spot has a Nepali-Indian focus, which brings a nice twist to the traditional Indian fare. It's definitely a step above the fast-casual chains like Spice 6, and far more reasonably priced than places like Rasika or Bindaas Bowls. Great for a date night or a quiet business lunch. The only downside? There was construction going on at the front door when I arrived. A worker was using a nail gun and casually waved me over a cord while still actively working in the doorway -- not ideal from a safety or customer experience standpoint. Hopefully, that's just temporary and done after hours in the future. It also added a bit of noise for those dining in. That said, the food, portion sizes, and price easily outweigh that one hiccup. I got to DC last night, and went to a conference this morning. As my Uber drives me back toward my hotel for lunch nap, I spotted this restaurant right next to the church. The signs reads that they open at 12-noon (Sunday) but at 11:50am, I walked in and it was open. There were already a few table of guests and the place looks really cute with nice decor! The gentleman sat me and was extremely pleasant. I ordered the goat curry. I eat this any time I see it on anyone's menu. The goat curry came with rice. The curry was fantastic! A touch of spicy and the flavor was great. It's slightly different from the Indian curry I normally get in LA. I am a big eater and normally my biggest concern with curry is the small portions. Not here! I got a plate full of food and more. I ate all of it and would have licked the plate if no one was here. I am here until Thursday.... I will probably try to sneak in for another lunch!
