I was hating my hair and felt desperate. I loved Mahina's before and afters and reviews so I reached out to her. She immediately responded and we scheduled an appointment. Salon has easy parking, clean and convenient location. Mahina was so patient and thorough in the consultation. She asked me questions about my hair that no one has ever asked. My hair was extremely damaged with strange breakage. The coloring had patches of orange and streaks of green (By the way when I asked my previous stylist about the green she asked what I did??? Turns out Mahina said it was from over processing to blonde/white and then layering in the blue/purple toner incorrectly). I wanted more texture and dimension in my hair but was super worried about going shorter too since I wanted to grow it out. She executed perfectly!!! She went in on three occasions to trim to make sure that she only cut what was absolutely necessary. She used clean products which takes extra time and care to use correctly in order to not contribute to additional damage. She's definitely an artist (and expert chemist) and her passion for hair is obvious. I could tell at every step of the process she was thinking and adjusting and just trying to ensure that everything was communicated well. As a HUGE HUGE bonus, she was so intellectually stimulating and soothing. I felt like my brain was getting a spa treatment too. She has the most positive and healing energy while getting you inspired too. You just don't meet people and rarely get to have those types of conversations. I visited Mahina for the first time today as a roll of the dice since my current stylist wasn't available and I really needed a haircut. After reading so many great reviews, and seeing that she worked nearby, I gave it a go. It did not disappoint! I'm always very cautious to try new stylists, as I tend to have very unruly, frizzy, and thick/coarse hair that not everyone can handle! I know that I'm not a fan of long reviews and I typically want the reviewer to cut to the chase.  But I've got so much to say about "Hair by Hina" that I couldn't help myself.  In my search for a new person to do my hair since my previous one became a casualty of the pandemic, I turned to Yelp for help.  Although all her reviews were 5 stars, I was still skeptical ... I suppose I shop on Amazon too much and have gotten burned more times than I should have. However, I took a leap of faith and decided to give Mahina a try and wanted to share my experience for anyone looking for a new stylist and colorist.   RESPONSE TIME: I contacted her via text and IG on the same day to make an appointment. She responded to both inquires on the same day and I was able to book an appointment for the following week.  She took the time to discuss and asked what I hoped to achieve.  Then asked me to send her pictures of what my hair currently looks like and some pictures of what I'd like it to look like.   SALON LOCATION AND PARKING:  Hair by Hina operates out of Nueve Salon and Spa located at 614 Cooke Street.  This location was easy to find, centrally located, and ample dedicated parking (at no charge).  The salon was clean, good square footage, COVID protocols in place, in-salon restroom available for clients use, and good strong air conditioning.   CONSULATION: After you are warmly greeted by Mahina at the door, she sat me down for a pre-service consultation where we discussed everything from expectations, what could be achieved at this visit, the process she would be using, and the cost breakdown for her services.  If agreeable, she would proceed with the services.   HAIR SERVICE:  I came in for a cut, color and deep conditioning.  In my "before" picture, you can see my COVID hair was long, dried out at the ends, thinning, and in desperate need of a color "touchup".  She started with a dry cut, then proceeded to foil my hair with highlights and toned the excess with low lights.  From start to finish, she explained what she was doing next and why. During the color processing time, she used this downtime to share valuable tips on how to best care and preserve the color for as long as possible after I leave the salon.  She saved the exact formula in my client profile, so that in future visits she'll know exactly what "recipe" she used so she can duplicate the look if desired, or try something new from a different family of colors.   HOURS OF OPERATION:  Although the salon has preset hours, Mahina is flexible and will take as long as she needs to work on your hair to your satisfaction.  She won't cut corners or rush the process even if it goes beyond her regular business hours.   END RESULTS: An extremely happy client.  The results exceeded my expectations. As you can see from the "after" pictures, my color was beautifully blended and my hair looked and felt so much healthier.   RECOMMENTATIONS:: Book your appointment soon because I have no doubt that she's going to be highly sought after and will get super busy.  Also, there is something gratifying about supporting our small businesses in Hawaii.        I don't have enough adjectives to describe Mahina.  She's gracious, knowledgably, honest, hardworking, caring, extremely talented, and she really cares about her clients.  Okay I'm done now :)  I know that was long, but I hope it helps you in your search for a new stylist/colorist. read more

In the Year of Box Dye (aka Covid pandemic), I was a hot mess. Now that we can get out and get fixed it was difficult to get an appointment right away. But worked perfectly right before trip to a wedding and vegas. Told Mahina, make me UN-NATURALLY RED. You ask and you shall receive. 5-ish hours and $500-ish (including tip) later, I could star in X-Men as a villian! I felt very comfortable with her...didn't feel the need to chit chat the whole time, but she is easy to talk to. She was cleanly, organized, skilled, and a perfectionist in the best way possible. There was never a time throughout the day where I felt nervous about what she was doing. I'm the redhead in the photos! Mahina saved my hair! I had an awful experience with a stylist about 6 years ago, and had avoided salons ever since. I accidentally dyed my hair all the wrong red colors, and it turned out this awful purple maroon color. Mahina explained the color theory to me, and one of the first times in my life, I felt actually heard. Mahina is known her for blonding (that really beautiful bleach blonde ashy balayage) but when I showed her a photo of this extremely bright copper orange, she made a suggestion for the color based on my goal. Then she explained the process to me and asked my my thoughts on her color strategy (the way I wish all stylists did). I LOVED the result, and we talked over a plan for the roots growing out (red is hard to maintain), and when I came back, she blended my natural roots in such a natural way and still kept the orange I loved!
