Balayage: The confidence that this balayage gave me... I cannot thank Kelly enough for giving me such a transformation. My dad bleached my hair before at home and I lost half my hair. Since then, I have this trauma with bleaching my hair and swore that I'll never get my hair bleached again. Regarding hair cuts, 1 don't go to salons since whenever I'll go to a salon for a haircut. I always end un not liking it. Mostly because my hair gets cut too short. But with Kelly of Salon by Yoo doing my Balayage and hair cut, I'm now entrusting my hair to her until she can do hair. She's great with communicating throughout to make sure that I'm getting what I want with my hair, especially this is my first time getting a balayage. I'm an introvert, which makes me shy to go to salons and stuff, but Kelly makes me feel comfortable. I've been through quite a lot and with this new hair, it's 'new hair, new me'. Kelly is my hair girl until she's doing hair!!! Keratin Treatment: My hair's frizzy, puffy, and wavy. With the balayage, my hair getting bleached, of course it'll be more frizzy, puffy, and wavy. Me and kelly agreed on doing Keratin treatment since I can't do Straight Perm due to my hair being bleached. Before the Keratin treatment, I need to blow dry my hair and straighten it every time I go out, especially for work. Per the first picture, even though my hair's been blow dried and straightened, it's still wavy and puffy, especially on some areas. After the Keratin treatment, after drying my hair as seen on the other picture, I no longer need to straighten my hair since it's straight enough and not frizzy, puffy, or wavy. It's like that for a month, and after a month, it's kinda puffy but still not frizzy and wavy. It's such a huge help since I no longer need to spend so much time in styling my hair. I've gotten my hair digitally permed by Cla three times now and I am very happy with how it turns out. I have pin straight Asian hair and without a perm, it normally lays super flat on my head. Now that my kids are in school and I'm back to work outside the home, I don't have the time or energy to style my hair every morning. That's why I love getting my hair digitally permed every 5-6 months. It takes two hours but it's worth it because it saves me 15 mins every morning that I would have spent waiting for my curling iron to heat up and styling my hair. The digital perm body wave is only right for those of you that like the messy, undone, natural wave in the hair. It gives your hair some body and movement. It will not give you defined curls. My hair air dries bouncy with a slight bend as if I had it blown out. For special occasions I will use my Dyson air wrap on it for a slightly more defined curl but I'm happy with the way it looks air dried day to day. I highly recommend Cla. Believe or not 2 hours is pretty fast for this. Other stylists I've been to take 3 hours to do a digital perm. I believe she's one of the two best on the island at the digital perm. She watches out for the integrity of your hair too. A digital perm is only right for unbleached hair so if you have highlights, it's best to let it grow out first. Her salon is clean, modern, and comfortable. read more

I immediately booked at appointment (via Yelp) at Salon by Yoo and took the first available appointment they had. LOCATION: They are located on the second floor of the Pan Am building. Enter on the Makaila Street side and park in the visitor parking on the second floor. Note: The salon is located in the annex building. From the garage, you'll see the entryway to the PanAm building. Look towards the Makai/Kokohead side of the building and you'll see another entrance into the building. Go in there. PARKING: Parking is validated... don't forget your validation at the salon! SERVICE: It was my first time here and I got booked for a full color with Shannon. I told her my hair goals.... Which was blend or hide the gray. I also inquired about highlights, maintenance and keratin treatment. She made awesome suggestions and got to work. I literally walked out of there with more confidence.... My hair looked healthier and shiny... and the cut she did was perfect!! ATMOSPHERE: Their salon has a nice vibe with good music. Easy to book and very nice staff, but I got the kind of haircut that made me go home and cry. I asked for a couple inches off, to shoulder-length, and ended up with something *not even to the length of my chin.* I also said I needed it to be long enough for a ponytail because I work out a lot, and it's now too short to even pull back my bangs. We are both native English speakers, so I'm not sure where the complete and utter disconnect happened. She didn't ask about going buck wild and instead of asking if she could go shorter, she just ignored my request entirely. On top of it, it looks terrible and she clearly doesn't know how to cut short styles OR fine hair like mine because it's sticking out on the sides and in the back. I called and left a message to inquire about extensions (because I'm going to an event in a couple months and was expecting to have longer hair to work with) and they haven't called me back. Again, she was a nice person, but I am so disappointed in this hack job, it will literally take years to recover from it. I guess if you decide to go, bring more pictures than I did and repeat yourself at least 5 times before they bring out the scissors. Sighhhh.... read more

Since the pandemic closed everything, I decided to just let my hair grow. I had long hair years ago, so this was a nice change, although it does take a little more time to manage. Since I was out here, I thought why not take a walk on the wild side. I searched on Yelp for a high rated salon and Yoo came up. I sent in an appointment request and I don't know who I was corresponding with but I made an appointment. I was a little lost trying to find the location, but was able to with the help of security and another client. I met Moses who would be working on my hair. I explained what I wanted and he explained what the process was, and it all made sense. It took about three hours and I had an enjoyable conversation. I fell asleep twice...once during the final wash because of the scalp massage, and second during the drying...it was the hum of the blow dryer...LOL! When I was done, total rockstar look with dark purple on black! One of my friends commented I looked like I was in my 20s! I now understand the appeal of adding color to ones hair. It's fun and exciting! This is a great place to come to! I plan on cutting it short in the future, so I may be back! I think I'll do all silver before that, but until then... I hate to leave 1 star reviews but this was incredibly ridiculous. I'm on vacation with my girlfriend and I booked a hair appointment several days before our trip for my girlfriend for 11am on 3/10. I received an email confirmation (screenshot attached). We arrived at Salon by Yoo at 10:50am and were informed that our appointment was at 9am. I showed them the screenshot of the reservation from their website and their excuse was that sometimes the website books in my local time. Honestly, how does this even make sense, Why would it matter what my local time is? The Salon website should be booking in local time. Booking in my lical time would be an equivalent of me expectinf them to be open my local hours. If you're from out of town I'd advise not booking here because they didn't even seem to care that they ruined our plans. read more

I booked an appointment with Moses after seeing his work on his Instagram page @hairbymosescho. I was excited to get my hair done since I have not gotten my hair professionally colored before. This was also my first time at Salon by Yoo. I texted Moses through the phone number provided on his Instagram bio. I sent him a reference photo of purple highlights from his own Instagram page. He told me that if my hair in its current state was dyed dark, then turning it blonde will not be possible. He also told provided me information on how long the color would last. The highlights could last for about 5-6 months and the purple could last up to 2-3 months depending on the products I use and how frequently the hair is washed. He recommended me to use color-safe shampoo and conditioner and that it's even better if it's sulfate-free. Before the color service, he gave me a pre-cut. I asked for long layers with face framing layers, a slight curve at the back, and angled bangs (the bangs were cut after the color service) and to keep the length. The appointment lasted from 9AM to 2PM. I was told that my first appointment will cost the most and is the most work because we are working from nothing. He took about an hour just applying the foil and bleach into my hair! He is very detail oriented and I respect that he has the patience to work with my thick hair. He often checked up if I was comfortable and asked if I needed a bathroom break. Overall, I appreciate Moses' transparency with everything from how long the color lasts to how much the service will cost. He is also very nice and an interesting person to converse with. He says that he is always excited to do fun colors since not many people get it because of their jobs. I love how my hair looks like there's different shades of purple in it. My hair also feels lighter from the haircut. There was definitely a lot of care given to my hair. Thank you so much for making my dream hair come true, Moses! read more

Had the pleasure of getting a full balayage, hair cut and deep conditioning treatment with Moses and I'm so glad I did! After seeing my inspiration photos of the cut and color, Moses had a good idea what I was trying to go for. I have a lot of hair so foiling usually takes forever -- Moses was extremely patient and detail oriented when it comes to his work. He explained every step thoroughly and shared tips on how to take care of my hair post treatment. I love how much lighter we were able to get my hair to while keeping it healthy and that we were able to keep the length. Be sure to pack snacks, food, headphones and download some shows if you have a long appointment (they have water!). If you choose to park in the structure, they do validate but you will still end up paying a bit so I decided to park elsewhere and walked over since I knew my appointment was going to take all day. I do wish there was more of a heads up about getting charged a credit card transaction fee (2.7%) otherwise I would have asked about a different payment method. I moved to Honolulu two years ago, and am Korean, so was looking for a Korean stylist--someone who understands the Korean aesthetic, if you will. I have been to many East Asian-owned salons in Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia, and Cla may be my favorite stylist! I have been wanting to get my hair done by Cla, after reading rave reviews at her previous workplace. I found out that she was starting her own salon, and made a reservation before the official opening. I went in and told her I want to dye my hair ash brown (it was already dyed brown but had turned reddish) and get natural highlights. She listened and gave me exactly what I wanted! The photos are from one day after the job, but the highlights are more pronounced now, about 3 weeks later. But not brassy at all, at least not yet. The salon is clean and spacious, and provides tea/coffee/water. I felt relaxed the whole ~4 hours I was there (bleaching takes a long time!). Cla is also really conversational, respectful, and friendly! I felt very comfortable with her. She speaks both Korean and English fluently. She makes me feel comfortable that I'm able to really tell her what I want for my hair.
