I've tried a number of different stylists over the years: Yoshi, Sachiko, Marine, Sally, and Tiffany, and ALL have been terrific: kind, courteous, and total pros. The shampoo and head+neck massage are truly restorative and relaxing. Stylists ask questions about how you want your hair cut and execute very airy, light styles that bring out the natural movement and beauty of hair and which have staying power, even if you don't go into the salon often, like me. Oak was my first stop in my search for a new hair salon. I had been seeing the same colorist for 3 years and was heartbroken when we had to part ways due to my move. For my first visit, I saw Yoshi. I had a vision of what I wanted and he gave me great feedback of what he would recommend in order to make the haircut last longer. I decided to trust him and go with all his recommendations (because really, what do I know), and in the end it was perfect. Low maintenance with just enough layers to give my hair life. A few months later I made a last minute decision to get a color before a wedding. Yoshi wasn't available, so I decided to try my luck with Tiffany. I honestly came in with no game plan, and Tiffany was so nice and patient with me. I decided on the illumina color and she pulled it down a bit to blend into my ends (and also make the color last longer between visits). We talked briefly of a game plan for the next one or two visits, and I loved the color coming out. Again, perfection! I really love that his salon cares a lot about low maintenance but lovely styles and color, which makes it great for budgeting (because y'all know how $$$ hair maintenance can be). TLDR: -Great staff that will take care of your hair and make the cut/color last (while keeping your hair healthy) -They welcome you at the door and you're seated with box water (*say no to plastic) and chocolate -There's an ipad with netflix (in japanese/english) for you to enjoy -You get a super relaxing scalp massage while you're hair is washed -You get a nice shoulder massage right after before they dry your hair Only downside is that parking can be tight and limited so come early to snag a spot so you're not late for your appointment. read more

Decided to pamper myself and pay more than I usually do for my not very complicated haircut by going to this Japanese Salon on Monsarat. It was recommended to me by one of my BFFs after I complimented her on her beautiful curls. She credited her stylist, Sally, for cutting it in layers that brought out the curl in her usually straighter hair. With 4 events on the horizon I wanted to cut my overgrown hair but they were booked on the days I wanted. Luckily Sachiko had a last minute cancellation so I was able to get her the following day. With 20 years of experience under her belt, I felt like I was in very capable hands. Sweet and personable, she made me feel comfortable on my first visit. We started with a quick consultation to determine what I wanted and the length. This was followed by a gentle and thorough shampoo and head spa which was great! Why is it always infinitely better when someone else washes your hair?! After that she cut my hair to length and taught me how to curl my hair with my fingers when blow drying which I never knew I could do! This was followed by a brush and blow drying that worked in a wondrous Cell Cure hyper lipid serum (Japanese product which they sell for $62) then an oil (same brand for $48) that made my hair feel smooth and silky like never before! She complimented me several times on my shiny unadulterated black hair which was also a first. I must say that although I loved how my hair felt after she worked on it, I passed on purchasing the products which would have doubled the cost of my cut. Being a low maintenance gal, I just don't see myself spending time on blow drying. But if I do change my mind I know where to go. This is my new go-to hair salon. After going to the same stylist for over 20 years, i was dissatisfied with my haircuts and so searched for a new stylist. I tried a few other places but after coming here, I'm definitely going to be a regular. It's a Japanese hair salon and most of the stylists are Japanese but most seem to speak both Japanese and English. I've gone three times now and there has been a mix of clients, both Japanese and non-Japanese. My stylist is Marine, and she is so knowledgeable and skilled in cutting and coloring. It's amazing to have a stylist be gentle while working on my hair. I had gotten used to too hot dryers and having my hair tugged and pulled. I've gone for a hair cut, had my hair colored, and a couple weeks ago had a trim and color touch up. Marine uses Japanese hair color and it does not seem to be as harsh as American dyes. Afterwards, my hair is so glossy and shiny! She even puts little plastic caps over my ears when she washes my hair. Definitely a five star experience! read more

This is my third time and I really love it here. Yoshi- Top Stylist is excellent and did such a beautiful job trimming my hair while giving it style. From the moment I walked in I'm treated with so much care. It's clean, mellow and kid friendly. Yes, the parking is limited so I always park in one of the neighboring streets but be careful not to parking in the "No Parking Zone" or you will get towed. T There is a personal basket to keep all of your items with you safe; Yoshi carried it with us while I shampoo'ed. I love the shampoo chair that doesn't strain my neck because it automatically raises your neck and back to the rinse sink level. He uses quality salon shampoo and hair treatment that left my hair silky and smooth. Before we started, he consulted with me on what my goal was and how he was gonna shape it to give it back some life plus shared the condition my hair was in. I have Sjogren's Syndrome that leaves my hair super dry. Today, he was impressed that I was able to maintain moisture from my last visit throughout except for a bit on my ends and he told me how to correct and maintain healthy hair which I am grateful. Back from an awesome shampoo and shoulder massage, I sat in his chair where he prepared my comfort with a pillow on my lap and a drape that allowed me to thread my arms through. While styling my hair, he genuinely remembered our conversation from my last appointment like it was yesterday but was several months ago. I've been seeing a lot of Japanese hair salon videos that give customers exactly what they wanted/haircuts that complement them perfectly. And I've been in need of a trim and a haircut that could actually complement my face. Oak had great reviews and seemed amazing, so I made an appointment. I didn't know what I wanted, I just wanted a haircut that would complement my face and frame it. My hair naturally is straight, and since I have thick hair, and a lot of it, it's just very unflattering the way it falls. I got sachiko, she was very nice and gave a lot of suggestions and her own input as to what would match me. We decided on curtain bangs. Then off to the shampoo. It was very relaxing and a very thorough shampooing. The cut of the back, I wanted straight and just a trim. It's not as straight as I would have liked, there are a few layers, which I didn't want. I do understand that since I haven't gotten a haircut in a while, that it wasn't naturally straight anyway and wouldn't be without cutting off a lot more. The bangs. It was looking very heavy and still not complementing or flattering, so I suggested some small bangs in the middle with a few strands as to not be so heavy. It looks a lot better. But, one side of the curtain bangs is a lot longer than the other. And for the tiny middle bangs, there's more from the left side than the right side. Kind of awkward. I guess I'm going with the asymmetrical look for now haha. It has its moments when it looks pretty good but most of the time it looks very uneven. Service was great though, and I'd definitely give it another try when I need another cut. read more

If I could give them 10 stars, I would. Sally is my stylist, and Tiffany does my color. No offense against either one. They are more than capable of doing both. I just started out that way. There were so many good ones, but as luck would have it, I picked well, and God blessed me with OAK. This review is long overdue as my first appointment with Tiffany was over a year ago. She is so easy to talk to and has the most unique yet amazing way of washing my hair. I don't want it to end. She chose the right color for me and has been easing in to my existing color as it all grows out. Note: by my request, she's been only coloring my roots. I love her. Then there's Sally. Omigosh. I have never met someone like her. I wish I could be like Sally. She's always so happy and cute. Sally does my cut and "head spa". You said "Huh??? What's a head spa?" Customer service is exceptional at OAK Monsarrat. Furthermore, you can tell that they really care about their customers. They offer 20% discount off services for your first visit. They're a fairly small salon so the moment you walk in and mention your appointment, you're greeted by name (which makes me feel special). I was given a disposable mask and a tablet to use (can watch Netflix or read Japanese magazines if you can read Japanese). The first time I went in was for a cut and digital perm. This wasn't the first time I've gotten a digital perm but my last one was several years ago. Long story short, it didn't stick, and my hair was soon straight again. I refrained from washing my hair for a few days as instructed, but it still didn't stay wavy. I also feel like I experienced extraordinarily more hair loss in the weeks following my visit, as compared to before. My stylist, Kana and the head stylist, Yoshi found out about my lack of waves after the digital perm and hair loss and asked me to come in for them to take a look at my hair. At my follow up appointment, I got my hair digitally permed again. Yoshi reassured me that the chemicals they use are alkaline-free and shouldn't cause any further damage to my hair. He even instructed me on how to better care for my hair. I'm happy to say that this time my hair has the volume I was looking for and the loose curls are still there a week later. I'm also not experiencing any additional hair loss (nothing more than normal at least). Although I was on the fence about returning after that first visit, the follow up visit has convinced me that this is definitely a business worthy of my loyalty and I'll be back! Although I am loyal to my hairdresser who I've been seeing for years, I couldn't pass up trying OAK Monsarrat for their grand opening special. The salon is located in the same shopping mall as Bogart's. The salon itself is very clean, spacious and minimalist. The owner Yoshi is very friendly and actually pretty funny when you talk to him. He is experienced and comes from Japan and worked in NYC as well! Not going to lie, I was a little nervous getting my haircut because I kind of had a bad experience in Japan lol. But I told him that I didn't want it too short but lighter.. and not too thin lol. Hopefully he didn't think I was being too difficult. Yoshi was very patient and really took the time to get to know what I want. Also it's good to show him pics so he has a better idea of what you want. After I showed Yoshi wanted I wanted, we headed back to the shampoo room. Let me just say, the shampoo/head massage was the highlight of my experience haha. The chair itself is so comfy but Yoshi makes it so relaxing while he washes your hair. It's like a mini massage. If you don't want to get anything done to your hair, you can get a blow out or one of the head spas which are pretty reasonable! As for my haircut.. well I loved it! He made my hair light but not too thin like I asked. He is also all about being natural and using cleaner hair products which I like! He styled my hair very Japanesey. The whole experience was like going to a salon in Japan (which I have been to!). They always give the best customer service! I treated my mom to blow out for her birthday and she also enjoyed her experience at OAK. She is already thinking about going back to get a haircut. She's been asking to get bangs for a long time and when we walked by the new hair salon last week I finally said ok we'll go for it. I found my new hair salon! Oak Monsarrat is located in the lovely Diamond Head neighborhood. I made an appointment online and didn't specify a stylist since this was my first visit. I arrived just a min or two before my 9 AM appointment and the salon was already busy. My first impression was how clean, bright and simple the salon is. I checked in for my appointment and was assigned to Kai. We started by washing my hair, which was very relaxing by the way, and then I got a nice shoulder massage before my haircut. Kai was able to cut my hair the way I wanted. My hair is bleached so the haircut got rid of most of the dry, brittle ends. It's been a week since my appointment and my hair still feels so smooth and not frizzy. My previous hair cuts from other salons would only last a day or two once all the product is washed away :-( I didn't feel rushed during my appointment and was out of there in about 45/50 min. After doing budget hair cuts for my entire life and not always loving the way it looked, I decided to invest a little more into my hair for my upcoming wedding and get a hair cut that I actually like. As a customer, I chose oak salon for very simple reason: convenience and sincerity. Although they failed both at the end, I'd like to highlight the reason I chose the Oak Salon at the beginning. Long story short, I made an appointment via their website for a ombre/sombre, but I got a call from three different associate, saying they cannot do my appointment or/and have to move me to different date due to the reservation system issue. Anyway, instead of ombre, I've ended up dying my hair like my original hair color and leave my partial highlights that already on my hair after consultation. Everything went smoothly, but my hair turned out very dark color at the end which I have never had before. I got many mixed comments; my hair colors are uneven and looks like greenish, grayish or black. The next day, I called the salon and asked if there is anything we can do better with my hair. I'm not a millionaire, but I rather stay in peace than arguing with somebody even though I spent $100 on my hair. However, every sentence from the hair designer to me was "You did it, You wanted it, You asked it". We were unable to continue our conversation because she seemed very upset and emotional. I said I just wanted to get an advice from you and figure out what we can do the best. Needless to say, the conversation ended without any conclusion and remained very unprofessional. After few hours later, receptionist called me to set up the appointment for a re-done. But there was no apologies for the previous phone call with a designer. It could have been better at the first place. It would've been better to make everyone peaceful. More ironically, I've found out that the designer sent me an email to me prior to our phone conversation. It says the service guarantee is provided for 10days from the date of service and feel free to contact a salon. Ouch! What was the pain and uncomfortable situation I have experienced? I feel like they set up the system to make them look better only. It may work to push their business for a short period. However, I wish they could realize it would work more efficiently only if they stay true to their core principle, delivering good customer service. read more
