I have to say... Yelp did not do me wrong. Mai is a hidden gem in an unassuming salon off of King Street. She matched my exact hair color and cut my bangs like I asked. I haven't been able to find a stylist to cut my bangs (and for the longest time I was wondering if it was me asking incorrectly or using the wrong terminology?) but Mai delivered. It was exactly what I asked for. On top of all that, she accommodated my last minute appointment by staying late, was friendly and welcoming and her prices are extremely reasonable. Feels like home!! The two ladies both greeted me as I entered the door...just like home... I came alot earlier than my appointment bc I read on other reviews that parking was difficult...so I made my appt in mid day, and parking was fine... Love it! Will definitely return! As Im waiting I notice all customers were loyal customers...regulars...came from all over for a cut by Mai...wow! So I gladly wait... I waited in a massage chair! $1 for 5 mins...sure! Then I cruised awhile, read some mags that were right on the side of me...with a wide selection too!...Then I added another $1. My turn comes....and she totally engages to what I was saying...talked with me and really tried to understand what I wanted... I havent had a hair cut for a year...got pregnant and my hair went wild!!! Long and out of whack really lol!!! Mai saved me! I had a friend help cut my hair but it wasn't the best so I needed it straightened out before my trip. While her hours do show she was open on Sundays, she had planned to take that particular Sunday off. She answered my phone call and understood my predicament. She called me back later to say that she could come to town to meet me (from Ewa!) and cut my hair. It was a little pricey but I was glad to pay it since she was able to make it to town to save me! Just got my hair cut with Mai for the first time today! I just moved to the area not too long ago and I had a rough 2 weeks at work and told myself that I was due for a beauty run/self-care (in this case, a haircut. My ends are so dry!) Returned to Mai because my daughter wanted highlights for her birthday (we also requested for a layered haircut to get rid of the dead ends). Scheduling with Mai was convenient. I saw Mai end of January 2026 to have a major change done...transition to going white. After consulting with her in advance, she cut my hair as short as I could wear it. Had not worn my hair this short since grade school!! Mai did a masterful job with the cut. She's a very skilled hairstylist and excellent at determining the right style based on face definition and shape. She then proceeded to do a lowlight to weave and blend into the white that was showing. I received many compliments and was even told I looked younger with the new hairstyle! WOW. What started as a day full of regret and frustration quite quickly turned into the most satisfying haircut experience I've had on the island. I booked a last minute appointment at Paul Brown Salon for 12:30 for a chin length bob haircut. I was told my stylist was a beginner by the receptionist but that the stylist had been there for 4 years. So I thought I'd give this place and new stylist a chance. To put it bluntly (just like she did my hair) she left me with 3 different lengths and unevenness I had never seen before. I've been to Mai's over the years and this review is a long time coming. Her cuts grow out so well that I only see her once or twice a year. She had an opening this week so I grabbed the chance to get in my New Year's hair cut. She did not disappoint. I went for an asymmetric cut and was so happy I tried something different and new. I love visiting with Mai but sad that I only see her only a couple times. I was on the fence about getting curtain bangs or face framing layers because past salons have made it to where it only looks good styled and I don't have that kind of time in the morning, every morning. Mai showed me face framing layers that look absolutely stunning when they just fall into place- no styling required! I have thin hair and she cut it to look fuller and so much healthier. She really listens to the length and does not take off more than you tell her (BIG PLUS) !! I got a blunt cut with face framing layers. Shes the sweetest lady and has had 30+ years of experience. I'm super picky about who touches my hair and I'm so glad I found her, I'll be going to no one else! Pricing is very good, not crazy expensive like other salons. My hair cut was $55 (not including tip) where it'd easily be $90-100+ anywhere else. The outside of her shop has a small sign that says salon not Mai's, but don't worry, that's her inside! Mai is seriously talented and knows what will work with your age, hair texture and lifestyle. I get so many compliments on her modified A-line bob for my senior hair. I was afraid that everything might shut down because of the recent surge in covid cases. I called on a Tuesday to make an appointment for that Friday. She had space and I was happy. There are a few free parking spaces in the back that are shared with the other businesses in that building. I was lucky to get one. There's hand sanitizer at the entrance, she wears a mask, and customers have to wear masks. I told her that I wanted to get rid of the dead ends but keep as much length as possible, get some face-framing layers, and some side-sweeping bangs. She cut the basic length and layers dry, then washed my hair with a massage, and finished up the details afterwards. My cut looks great! I plan to come back in the future. read more
