I. Love. This. Restaurant. I'm a person with heigh standards. The tortilla soup? Amazing. Typically a soup option is a slapdash poultice of scraps to save a place mine. This is not the case here. Each bite tasted as if it was made deliberately. There was an effort here that I had yet to experience at most places. The fish was fine, but we are in El Campo, so what do you expect? That's on me. Hush puppies were noisy with flavor, and the blackberry cobbler was put together fantastically. The Mac and cheese was great! The pasta was al dente and you could actually taste the cheese. You. Driving from Brownsville back to Houston and wanted comfort food at a place we hadn't tried before. Found Hinze's on Apple Maps. It was only a short detour. Solidly good home style food. Great fried pork chops. Great broccoli salad. Very good blackberry cobbler. Order at a counter and they bring out your food. Nice employees. The others with me had good meals as well. I came here on a Friday night about an hour before they closed and what impressed me was there was absolutely no drop in service. They didn't run out of sweet tea (which was excellent) and everyone was so friendly and accommodating. This is southern food at its finest. They don't necessarily have a huge menu but what made me fall in love was there choices in sides! Collard greens, Mac, cabbage, okra and tomatoes, green beans, potato casserole, and so forth and so on... I personally got the catfish and shrimp which comes with three sides. Dined in and Amber took our order. I ordered fried shrimp and fish with okra, collard greens and potato casserole and peach cobbler for an appetizer. She didn't judge just simply asked if I would like it heated, she's amazing. It was delicious! I can't say the food was bad, but it wasn't what it could be. The coating on the chicken fried steak was tasty, but the steak itself was seasoned differently. A big taste conflict. Driving through Wharton and passed a sign that read "lunch specials, liver & onions, baked chicken, chicken or shrimp alfredo, and grilled salmon. I had had a tooth pulled yesterday and thought the shrimp alfredo sounded good so I turned around and went in for lunch. I was told the shrimp alfredo was not available until dinner. I then tried to order the grilled salmon and it rang up $13.95. I was told it was not a special that it was just being advertised. When we left I noticed they changed the sign. Needless to say, I would not have even stopped if I had not seen the shrimp alfredo. Will not go back. read more

I'm a lover of chicken fried steak and have tried several all over Texas. So, when I read the reviews of Hinzes Country Kitchen and their chicken fried steak, I had to make the drive. Entering HCK I was immediately impressed with the interior. Rustic cafe with plenty of seating. My kind of joint! Walking up to the counter I was greeted by a nice woman. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to your table. The menu had all my favorite Southern foods, including chicken fried steak. Based on a Yelp review I ordered the chicken fried steak with potato casserole and collard greens. My food came out on a pie pan which is nice twist. They brought out a plastic fork and knife. Plastic utensils for chicken fried steak? Can it be that tender? Nope! My first cut was a disappointment. It was all crust. In fact, the first inch or more around the meat was nothing but crust. No big deal because I've come across a lot of cfs like this. However, each cut the crust would come off the meat. Not only that, the meat was somewhat tough. Edible, but not easy to cut with a plastic knife. The cream gravy (on the side) wasn't bad, but it's thinner than most places. I've had better cfs that's for sure. The potato casserole was ok although not very hot. The flavor was good, but the bacon in the casserole was rock hard. The collard greens were good. Oh, they had lemonade in a dispenser which was really good. For dessert (they have a lot of pies and such), I had a piece of the Reese's pie. That was pretty good. I had a difficult time giving this place 3 or 4 stars. Three stars for the entree, four for the dessert, and five for the very nice employees. So, a four will work I guess. Will I go back? Hmmm? Wow! The selfish part of me wants to keep this a closely guarded secret to be shared only with the people dearest to me, but I just can't. I wish there were more stars and emoticons that I could use to rate this restaurant, the staff and most importantly, the food. I consider myself a connoisseur of the chicken fried steak and traditional Texan sides having sampled fare from Brownsville to Amarillo, from Jasper to El Paso. I've come across some really good, some great but this place... I'm getting ahead of myself. I was told this place had the best CFS in town and decided to put that to the test. I arrived and ambled up to the counter and was greeted by two of the sweetest ladies I've encountered, the lovely Iris and the very aptly named Happy. I was awed be the number of amazing sounding coices on the blackboard menu until I saw the object of my desire. I ordered the CFS with cream gravy, mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. This is pretty standard fare across the state and I prepared myself for canned green beans swimming in cream of mushroom soup topped with dehydrated fried onions and some run of the mill mashed potatoes. I was hoping for the best with the CFS but didn't let myself get carried away. About 10 minutes later the wonderful Happy brought my plate to the table and asked me to let her know what I thought. It was great to see all of the employees taking such concern with and ownership of their food and their service, something that much of the restaurant industry seems to have lost. On my plate was a perfect potion of a beautifully breaded CFS fresh out of the fryer with not a glint of oiliness Or greasiness. The oil must have been at the perfect temperature as the CFS retained no excess frying oil. The crust was golden brown and perfectly cooked. Secondly and more importantly, they brought the delicious cream gravy in a bowl on the side. This prevents the crust from becoming prematurely soggy and allows you to decide how much deliciousness you are willing to handle. I'm not making this up, folks. I take my CFS seriously and I would put this one up against any one, anywhere. My vote: Best Chicken Fried Steak I have EVER tasted, hands down. Then I looked at the green bean casserole... Goodness me that casserole... fresh green beans cooked to perfection in a homemade mushroom sauce full of flavor but not too salty topped with... get this... REAL French fried onions. After the first bite all I could think about was what the next holiday was so I can order a few pans full to bring back to Houston for dinner! Seriously unbelievably good. My vote: Best Greenbean Casserole I have ever tasted. Pretty sure it's the best there is anywhere. On to the mashed potatoes; they were great. Perfectly mashed, just the right amount of skin. The homemade brown gravy complimented them perfectly. I wish I could say more about them. On their own I bet that can hold their own against any mashed anywhere but when playing sidekick to their CFS and Greenbean casserole they do take a bit of a back seat. My vote: Great by any measure. Do yourself a favor, take a day trip to the historic town of Wharton, see the beautiful old Victorian houses and when you get hungry enough make your way here. Stopped on Saturday afternoon 12/16/17. Took a group of five and bragged about the BBQ to them. First visit since the original place burned. To my surprise what a downsize. The previous facility was huge with room for banquets and parties. I can't fault the owners for downsizing. I know real estate is expensive to own and rent. The old location was very convenient. I ate here every weekend for years. Once on my way down to a fishing lease on Friday eve, and on my way back on Sundays. The place seems like they are more interested in take out than sit down seating now. In the days probably before the original owner passed away, there was a lot of pride in the food, service and portions. I thought the meal was average at best. My parent use to leave the East side of Houston on any given day to drive to Wharton to eat lunch for an afternoon excursion, and did that often. That's how good things use to be. Very disappointed in the two meat plate. Not so long ago you received a larger portion of ribs and other meat you chose. Saturday I received two ribs that were not so full of meat. The sausage was cut too large, where I had to re-cut before eating. Now I know everywhere is different, but the last time I ate here the sausage was sliced thin and one piece was a bite you dip in your BBQ sauce, instead of re-cutting the entire link again. You can say I'm picky, but when you get use to the way people do things, and things stay the same for years. You kinda get a comfort in the way folks do business. I'm not complaining about the flavor. It was good food, and good tasting on my plate. My butter beans would make anyone's grandmother happy. The beans were excellent and tender. My other side was mashed potatoes with cream gravy. I will say the potatoes were real mashed to perfection. The gravy was so good they could serve it as another side. In fact, it tasted like pork chop gravy my mother made. My son ate a turkey plate with Cole slaw. He said the slaw has way too much oil in it with no flavor. I have to agree with him, there was quite a puddle of oil in it. His fries were ok by him. Turkey was the smallest portion I have seen yet. The other guest got two meat plates with mashed potatoes and onion rings. There were all good with there meals. Unless you have eaten here for years, you might not know what your missing. Like the serve yourself area, there appears to be little room for such a convenience today. I have been eating here for around 15 years. I remember rib plates on Sunday to be worth the standing room only crowd to get. You received about 4 bones on a two meat plate, and I remember about a half a link of sausage, or so it seemed that large. The meats use to cover most of the plates. The sides came in bowls and you got three sides, not the two small ones you get today. Today's portions look more like sides come from an ice cream scooper than a serving spoon. I feel like most places are more interested in the money than the product. I read the reviews that were positive, and mine might seam negative. When you go out to eat and pay over $10.00 for a two meat plate, you should get a plate worth telling your friends about. All I could tell mine that day is sorry, it use to be a great place to eat with huge portions. Dessert has also changed a little. If you going to charge me nearly five bucks for a piece of pie, then give me a large piece of pie like you use to. The House of pies gives you an entire coconut pie with meringue for $13.00. Not asking you to copy, but they sure use to give you a large piece for your money. The coconut pie here is still delicious. Hard watching such a highway staple get so concerned about making more money. I wish they had left the portions alone and just charged more money. Instead, just like other places, they charge more money and cut the portions. I took a good look around while I was there. That was my final trip. Once things start to go South like this has in my opinion, it just keeps getting worse. I hope the son and sisters don't take this too offensive, but people do pay attention, and my attention in the future will be somewhere else. I rather keep the great memories, than be disappointed in the future. Mckenzies BBQ in Conroe, and Huntsville haven't forgotten what a real two meat plate looks like. Not trying to plug them, but if your in Conroe, you should look them up. Reminds of what this place use to serve. Good luck with your new location. His place is just like a hidden jewel I don't know town. As you drive on highway 60 towards Lane city you'll find Lindsey's country kitchen just on the outside of work. And you're definitely noticed that there is a lot of activity on parking spaces that are full with construction vehicles and every day workers from the local area. I have been coming here making the effort to eat there every Wednesday and sit with local towns people and visit additionally always trying new items. And I can never tell you which one I like!! Only to make things worse they try to tell allies you with those desserts that grandma makes. Wow. The people that work there in the both back and front or awesome.
