Very cool urban vibe in this fun winery in my neighborhood! The entrance is a bit off the beaten path in the back of a warehouse complex, but when you walk in the atmosphere is great, the wines were tasty (I liked some wines from styles I don't typically enjoy), and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. This is an interesting industrial space that looks as though it were once a mechanic's garage or something prior to becoming a Winery. That is, if you can get to it. There are many different twists and turns, so watch out for all the 4 or 5 sandwich boards leading the way. GPS will not get you directly to the Winery. It's a little confusing. Once inside it had an urban/rustic feel to it with all the casks and equipment right there in the corner of the building. Also, if you go in the cooler months, bring a jacker-- the open space is a little chilly. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was fairly busy. What I must say is one of the two owners was on staff and she was friendly, doting and informative. Came here for a wine tasting with a few of my girlfriends when we were visiting Portland. Couldn't be happier that we chose this place! For young women who have little experience in wine tasting, this is the perfect venue to learn more, feel comfortable, and deepen your appreciation for wine. The owner was so warm, friendly, and really made us feel at home. Its truly a very unique, cozy, and wonderful place. Waaay over priced. I'm totally cool with paying for quality, but the wine they served for ten bucks a glass was a glorified table wine. I resent paying such a large markup for wine that should have been 5-6 a glass. This place is extremely difficult to find, has a shoddy selection and is housed in what amounts to a meat locker. The chairs are crappy folding chairs (look like they were bought from Freddie's or something) and the decor is tacky and amateurish. Our service was good, but the inflated price tag and lack of ambiance was what did it for me. Just go to Gigantic up the street. read more

I have been a wine club member here for close to a year now - what a total steal. Not only do you get a couple of bottles of great wine very other month, you also get invites to all kinds of events. There are member only events at no costs and you can bring a few friends. You get to taste a wide range of their wines while munching on great snacks. My friends all ask to be invited back again and several have joined the club on the spot. The non-member events are a great way to check out what they have to offer and have a really good time. read more

4 Stars for my personal taste, but 4 Stars also because they're an independent business that has passion for their craft and the tenacity to compete in the big business of wine. I like much of what they do, and damn it I love to support the local culture. Their location is tricky to find, as it's in an industrial park next to a machine shop. But it's worth the trip for something novel to do. It's not fancy it's crafty, and sometimes that's much better. You can get their wines around the area and they are worth a sip or two as much as anything else you'd try on faith. I know taste is subjective, but honestly surprised that anyone would be disappointed with the wine selection here. My husband and I visit wineries and distilleries quite often, especially while traveling, and this winery stood out to me. It was unique to me. I LOVED every single wine I tasted and we had a really hard time choosing which two bottles we wanted to buy. My husband despises sweet wines and was surprised by how much he enjoyed them. He bought a bottle of the Tiernan Connor rose, the only rose he has ever enjoyed. The owners are also super nice people and provided great customer service. read more

Hip Chicks is good but their partner wine, Tiernan Connor, is fantastic! It's rare, when wine tasting , that I like every wine that's being poured, but that was definitely the case with Tiernan Connor. As to the Hip location, very unique and oh so Portland! My friend and I went to Hip Chicks Do Wine today for their Halloween Candy and Wine Pairing. It was bit hard to find, but the signs help! When we arrived we went up to the counter and the attendant informed us to find a table and she would be right with us. She was not right with us, but she was the only person serving so I understand. Finally we got our wines and realized one was missing, so she rectified that. Each wine taste was paired with a small piece of candy. The candy paired very well with the wine. My only complaint besides the slow service is that the "tastes" were the smallest tastes I have ever had in my 7 legal years. I think throughout the whole tasting I had less a half glass of wine. I don't expect any extras, as I work at a bar as well but this was awful. It was enough wine to literally touch it to your tongue and get a tiny sip! I am sad because this was my first experience and I was beyond excited. I can't say whether I will be back or not. read more

The first time I went to this unique urban winery was with a group of girlfriends as we were exploring that area of Portland. Had a wonderful time with the pourer, who also happpened to be one of the owners. From Lori we learnt alot about the making of wines. I took my husband back the following weekend and he (who is a give me beer or give me nothing kind of guy) found that their wines were pretty darn good ,and he really likes their whites. Lori and the gang really know how to throw a party we have been to several of their events and always have a great time The wines have a good balance of flavor and cost, and some really snazzy lables. I've been to many wineries for various wine tastings and events. Although enjoyable, often times these wineries get swept up in in trying to appeal to the masses by focusing on interior design, the merch shop, schmoozing and trying to sign people up for memberships rather then the real star-the wine. Often I am disappointed because although these wineries are pouring me tastes of wine, they aren't telling me anything about it but rather pouring and then moving on to the next group/set of people. Get in and get out, move along...that's what I often feel like at these bigger wineries. Thankfully I get the complete opposite when I visit Hip Chicks! It is off the beaten path but not hard to get to at all. It's like a little hidden gem-very unassuming on the outside but welcoming on the inside. This is where they age and bottle their wine, so even though there is a tasting room area, you get to see where all the barrels are housed (and sometimes the equipment that is used), which to me is very cool and gives you a deeper appreciation for the wine. The chicks are not only hip but they are knowledgeable as well. As they pour the wines they tell you what grapes they used, what notes you'll taste, dishes they enjoy best with it, etc. They not only make the wine but they drink it too and actually care what people think and appreciate feedback. They are friendly and charismatic and a lot of fun! They offer small plates (cheeses, meats, etc. ) and even suggest specific ones to go with the specific wine you're tasting. As Portland's oldest urban winery, they are very active in the local scene and organize events where they bring in other local business and have even collaborated with a few on occasion. It may be smaller than other tasting rooms, but it is more personal and they let the wine speak for itself. I'd take that in lieu of a stuffy tasting room with leather couches any day! So the next time you want to explore a Portland landmark, belly up to a bar and share some laughs and conversation over a delicious wine tasting (6 wines for only $12!!)-you must put Hip Chicks Do Wine at the top of your list! read more

I am quite disappointed with this winery. Which is unfortunate because I really want to like it! I was hoping for a winery closer to home that produced some great wine. The people are friendly and the atmosphere is..well..interesting. However, the wine it's self leaves much to be desired. The red's are bitter, white's.."meh"..not worth the $. The Portland area is close enough to Yamhill County (and some of the best wineries in the country) that it makes paying for sub-par wine a complete waste of all around energy. The ladies night was over priced, crowded, too loud, and again..wine nooo bueno. Save the $ and head to wine country! read more

The wine was okay, not my favorite, but drinkable nonetheless. I went with a friend and we shared a cheese plate which was very good. We were the only ones in the place for a while and the girl who was serving us wasn't very friendly. I don't know if she was trying to give us space or if she just wasn't a very sociable person but I feel like I could have had a better experience almost anywhere else. I'd really only go back if I had a deal of some sort (I purchased a Groupon type deal, so that's why I went in the first place), but probably wouldn't recommend this place to out-of-towners. read more

The Viognier was complex, delightful and has caused me to adopt the saying "a glass of Viognier a day keeps the subpar at bay." We also quite enjoyed the Drop Dead Red and Merlot. A great time was had by all discussing wine making with one of the owners. We'll be back. read more

When it comes to wine, I'm going to admit that I don't know my stuff so keep in mind that my review will based on the experience and service. This place is interesting - a winery camouflaged as a possible mechanic shop filled with barrels of wine smack dab in the middle of the city. I initially wanted to take the drive to the wineries outside of Portland, but they were a little too far for my likings so I did some research and found this little gem. We came for a special "after Thanksgiving" event they were holding that included an all-you-can-drink wine tasting that offered 16+ wines, appetizers and live entertainment. The service here was awesome! I regrettably didn't catch the names of the owners and employees however, they were all very attentive and extremely knowledgable of the wines. Although they distill their own wine, they do not own their own vineyard. Instead, their wine is a combination of products from different vineyards. The only complaint I have, and it is specifically for the event only, is that the appetizers that were advertised as being part of the $18/pp charge was not ready when we arrived and throughout our experience. The even started at 12pm and we got there at 1pm. Upon arriving, the appetizers were still being prepared and after an hour of being there, there were just barely some light appetizers. read more

An urban tasting room? Awesome! We wanted to go wine tasting, but didn't want to drive all the way out to Carlton or Hood River so it was nice that there was option in the city. The location wasn't difficult to find, at the same time, it isn't obvious if you aren't looking for it. Walking in, there was a large party at a table in the center and around the corner was the tasting bar along with a couple smaller tables. I like that you didn't have to stand around the counter waiting for them to pour the tasting, you could sit down at table to catch up with friends and the pouring came to you. I think we spend almost two hours there and our $7 flight of 6 wines became 8 wines. They did couple bonus pours...needless to say, the service was extremely friendly. Not the most amazing wine in the Willamette Valley but it was palatable. Ended up buying a bottle of a blush wine, I don't typically like blush wine but it was delicious. read more

Love the ladies, love the space, love the wine! It is so good, that I became a wine club member on a student budget! The location would be difficult to find if they didn't have plenty of signs out leading your to the deliciousness! Everyone is always so friendly and knowledgeable. Whenever I have people in from out of town, this is one of our first stops and I have never taken anyone that didn't end up stashing a few bottles in their suitcase on the flight home. Had a wonderful time celebrating a friends bday for the afternoon at their cool urban-warehouse winery. The staff, especially Callie and Heather, went above and beyond to surprise my dear friend with a cheese plate and specially monogramed cupcake. We got to watch and learn as the did their the first crush of the season. Every wine was a pleasure to taste and all 4 of us ending up buying several varieties to enjoy when we returned to Arizona, Seattle and Los Angeles. I received a gift certificate from my daughter and drove 50 miles to cash in on the certificate. We got lost and had a hard time finding the tucked away location. We took 2 bottles away to enjoy at a later time. Once opened and poured, the first sip was bitter and made the hair on my arms stand up.
