Spanish inspired dinner, served with Tempranillo from multiple vintages.
    John K.

This update is based on a recent dinner at Hip Chicks, structured around their Tempranillo releases from multiple years. Spanish inspired food was served to go with, and sometimes include, the featured wine. It's a wonderful thing to have winemakers who take the time to design a meal around their products, passing along ideas on how to best enjoy a nice bottle of wine at home.

For me, visiting wineries isn't just about the wine, but wine culture. I love hearing the stories about the winery and learning how they do what they do and why they do it. This is the oldest urban winery in Portland and they have a rich history. I was incredibly grateful they opened their doors and allowed us to make a reservation for a tasting on a day they are usually closed (and there were only 2 of us!). And their wines.... OMG!!! With each tasting it just got better and better. The wines are served in a test tube (and you have a glass to pour them into) which I thought was plenty for a tasting. They went out of their way to source some chocolate for us (it's our anniversary) and provided a small cheese and fruit plate. The tasting room has ample space and was decorated for the holiday. I cannot recommend this winery highly enough!!! We loved it so much we are debating becoming wine club members even though we live across the country from them.

I've had their wine for some time, but this was my first time at the mothership. Note it's a little bit tucked behind there, so just follow the signs, and you can't go wrong. My friend and I came for a tasting as part of a holiday market supporting a local nonprofit. The space itself is inviting and clean. I love how they have a wine for everyone really except for maybe no sparkling as far as I can tell. I think my favorites were the malbec and their Rouge red blend as well as the rosé. The skin contact pinot gris also had a nice herbal flavor. I appreciate all they do to support our local community and that they have lots of events. Look forward to coming back soon!

When a business screws up you hope that they do the right thing, but when a customer royally screws up you aren't sure how one will act. I organized my first event recently at my new job. I had briefly been a wine club member at Hips Chicks. I joined pre-Covid as so many of their events sounded fun. I stopped my membership once events stopped being a thing anymore. I noticed on their website they started up again and saw they had a Halloween Candy Wine Parining Event. I inquired through their website, about hosting an event at my work. Gloria responded immediatley and was super communicative everytime I reached out to her. I wanted to organize two different events. Gloria told me they could deliver kits in the morning the day of each event. The first date, all I arrived on time, and was super impressed by the presentation, and how easy it was to host the event. Everyone loved it. The day of the second event arrived, and mid-afternoon i realized my kits had not been delivered. I went back to check my email and noticed I had given Gloria the wrong date. I was besides myself. It was a Tuesday, and the winery was closed. I reach out to every email listed on their website, but I was frantic and needed a response ASAP. I then saw a link to their FB page and sent a message through there explaining what happened. With in seconds the owner responded, and within in 15 minutes my kits were at my door. I can't express how grateful I truely was. I did not want to reschedule the event and have to admit my failure. They totally saved my booty. They are the epitome of what good custmer service is all about. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Thank you!

Awesome spot in Sellwood. In the industrial area, and thankfully they had signs to direct you. Owners were good people willing to share their history. They will be celebrating 20 years! I did a succulent pot oil diffuser class and it was so worth it! Nothing better than girls time while enjoying a bottle of wine!

Kind of off the beaten path in a west house style district. They are so kind. Everyone that works there is amazing. I did the wine flight. I feel it's the best way to get to know the wines and ordered the apple Brie walnut with honey flatbread. I couldn't have been happier. The food is so good as was the wine. They do not have a vineyard but the grapes they use are purchased from local growers. I was there for sip and shop because I've loved these two things for a long time. It's a small market but the vendors are all amazing. The booths offered flowers, jewelry, pound cake (I bought raspberry), a photographer (yes you can have your portrait taken and from the samples posted she's really good), a booth with cards and stickers, and my favorite (because of the Disneyland connection) softest scarfs and infant blankets. I bought the infant blanket for my niece who will have her second boy soon. I should have taken more pics of the shops but I was having to much fun. I can't wait for the next months market. I'm hoping my friend will be able to come with me. Until then here are the pics I did take.

Test tubes filled with wine and sangria samples

My daughter and I attended the Sangria tasting event on Saturday. We were so excited for this adventure. We got there and there only a few tables filled which made me question why we needed to make reservations. We were excited to taste the Sangria. What we got was six test tubes that literally held a table soon each of three of their wines and three Sangrias. I have been wine tasting for years, Never have I received a test tube with literally a tablespoon of a wine to sample. How do you charge $20 for 6 tables of Liquid? I could drag this out, but will simply say ALL of the wines and sangrias were horrible! Strong/bitter after tastes and the Sangrias were an insult to Sangria for sure. A lot of fruit purée, grossly sweet, maybe some limeade and no fresh fruit - a signature of great sangria. I'm 60; I've been drinking wine and planning events at wineries for 30 years- I worked in the Napa Valley for five years. I love wine and I don't have to drink expensive wine, it just needs to be good. This experience was a HUGE disappointment. I was introduced to Hip Chicks wines about 10 years ago. Back then I liked what I had tried, but it was never a regular in my rotation so I was excited to rediscover it. Sadly, it was an EPIC fail. I am all about supporting women in business for sure- first and foremost, but As a consumer I expect a lot and sadly this experience and the quality of the product did not deliver.

They are hip and friendly chicks indeed. But, the chicks don't do wine all that well. The tasting room is hip and a cool venue for tasting and for events. I checked them out for the wine and chocolate tasting event The Hip Chicks hosted on February 12th and 13th, 2011, featuring chocolates by Cocoa Velvet Chocolates. To start we had a 2007 Sangiovese paired with a Lavender Earl Gray dark Chocolate. The wine on its own was nothing special. I had to have the chocolate with it to be able to sip and appreciate it. In fact, none of the wines wowed me and I couldn't bring myself to buy a bottle or even a full glass of anything. I noticed the pricing of the wines were not unreasonable at around $16.00 for the Sangiovese to $26.00 for a Malbec. I will spend that much for good wine on occasion. But these are just not that good. I like the concept of having a cool tasting room here in the city that hosts fun and interesting events like the chocolate tasting event. I just hope the wine making part of their endeavor improves.

This isn't one of the fancier brewpubs in Portland (looking at you 10 Barrel and Deschutes) but that's never been the Crux brand so I'm happy to see them stick to their down to the earth origins and focus on making really good beer. The bar is nice and long and a good place to post up for a couple of pints, with plenty of cheery tenders to pour them for you. The space is overall industrial-feeling with tall ceilings and minimalist decor and mostly bare walls inside, but there's also an outside patio area with picnic tables in the parking lot, though that's best in the summer. We got the General Tso Cauliflower to start which was a great share plate, with awesome flavor in the sauce, though the actual cauliflower was a bit undercooked. Still, we polished it off no problem. Fish tacos were also a good call, and the thin, crispy fries were a crowd favorite. There are so many good sours, IPAs and other craft beer options here, my buddy just opted for the 4-brew flight (mostly IPAs) which we all sampled and loved, though it's kinda pricy for what's basically 20 ounces of beer. The one-off vintage 14% special beers are where it's at, but at that ABV level, we just decided to share one barrel aged Imperial Stout. So friggin caramelly and delish - the perfect dessert. The space was pretty quiet for a Saturday night but our service was absolutely next level, so it made for a super pleasant gathering for our small group. The food at this Crux location is probably best described as better-than-average pub fare, but not mouth-watering, and the ambiance is low key but also nothing super special. The beer and the staff though, are awesome, so I will be back for more.

There are several items that either come gluten free or can be modified to be. The servers are knowledgeable about the ingredients of the menu items and I feel confident and safe eating here when gluten free is a need for me. They can get pretty crowded, but have several seating options. It was nice out today so outdoor seating was even possible, though it looked like there was a wait. Everyone we come in contact with here from servers to hosts are super friendly and welcoming. The food is pretty good. This time around, we shared the garlic Parmesan fries and the chicken wings (buffalo and honey gojuchang sauces). The wings were smoked and moist with good flavor. The fries were alright. More of the aioli would have helped so maybe request extra sauce or get some on the side. The dessert menu has some non-traditional offerings. The highlight for me was the cheesecake. I was assured by a server one time that the chef creates a gluten free cheesecake that rotates on the seasonal dessert menu. The current offering is tiramisu. The coffee chocolate sauce is good and I appreciated the bonus chocolate chip biscotti. The actual cheesecake is decent and I would be excited to try other flavors in the future.
