I especially look forward to the Saturday morning sessions, with Annette. Best way to start the day is with a good stretch in a hot studio, for a good sweat. Great community of people, always fun to meet other yoga practitioners, coming from such a variety of backgrounds. Great management and staff that make me feel at home. Hope to stretch with you all at bold flow sometime soon! =] ~Peace and Love! Jack

I know someone who teaches at this studio so I decided to make the trek to take a Yin class on a Friday afternoon. I must say it was worth the drive! Despite being located in a busy area of town and above a Trader Joe's, once inside it is serene and peaceful. I was promptly greeted when I walked through the door and she immediately said "you must be Karen!" Yay for being aware of newbies and making them feel welcomed. I signed a waiver, got a tour and settled into the very calming yoga room. Michael's Yin class was amazing and just what I needed. He happened to focus a lot that day on hip opener exercises so I was in luck. Despite holding poses for extended periods of time, I was never uncomfortable or in pain. Michael did a great job of showing modifications for many of the poses, thus allowing people at all skill levels to do the work. Not only did I leave feeling looser but I felt more relaxed and at peace. I really enjoyed Michael's teaching style, he is very down to earth and calming.

I had been looking for a near by place for deep tissue massages, as my regular place is quite out…read moreof the way. I found this place and decided to give them a whirl. First impressions, I was impressed with the "credentials" of the person who runs this place and thought I finally found someone close by that can help me with my chronic pain. There was a list of other massages offered which also intrigued me. I had spine surgery a few years ago, along with a couple knee surgeries some years ago, and need a tune up on a somewhat consistent basis to help with muscle dysfunction I deal with chronically throughout my body. After my first massage, my whole body was in pain for a week. I thought because it had been about 5 months since my last massage, it might be just that...well I tried this place again about 4 months later and I can 100% not recommend this place to anyone. I was injured while on the table, not to mention, again, also very sore all over for a week after this massage. While I was on my back, they dug under my kneecap, causing a sharp pain to occur. I winced pretty hard and they backed off, but the damage had been done. Due to digging under my kneecap, it caused severe inflammation and pain and I had trouble doing much of anything, including walking, for about a month. I saw my doctor and he explained what their carelessness caused to my knee. I have been getting a variety of massage for 15+ years now and have never ever encountered someone to do what they did, leading me to believe this place is not what is says it is. I have yet to locate this person's physical therapy license they claim they have and I am not sure where they went to school for massage, but clearly they need a refresher or to go back to school. Prior to my last massage here I had referred them to someone else, who also complained of some issues afterwards, which they were able to fix with a reputable therapist. If you are new to getting massage work done, just be careful with this place. Not trying to bring down a small business, but providing dishonest massages like I have experienced here puts the patient on the table at risk.

The room itself (a bedroom and a living room space) was super cutely decorated and the perfect amount of room for the two of us doing an overnight stay. The overall Convent space is pretty interesting and unlike anywhere I've ever stayed before. The downstairs space is a very large rooms/event spaces that are all decorated with bits of art from local artists that you can purchase and is independently run from the AirBNB. There was an event they were setting up for in the downstairs space for later that evening when we showed up and I believe the event happened and was taken down in the span of time it took for us to go out to dinner and come back, so that was interesting lol! The upstairs space is a long hallway with various different businesses in rooms on either side of the hall, with the high majority of these businesses focused on holistic healing and arts. My friend and I took advantage of our close proximity to these businesses and booked individual sessions with an energy healer that did energy readings of us, which was very enlightening for the both of us! The bathroom for the AirBNB is communal and located at the end of the hallway on this second floor closest to the AirBNB, but I assume that everyone in the building can access it as it has two stalls, two sinks, and a shower if you're so inclined as well. All in all, it was a good experience and I'm glad to have done it, but I don't know that I would personally do it again. I felt a steady level of anxiousness the entire time I was here, which I'm not entirely sure where that came from, but I think I could just chalk it up to me being in a space where I didn't feel completely safe even though there wasn't anything specific that made me feel unsafe here by any means. I just felt a tiny bit on edge the entire time I was here.

I suggest following them on social media to find out all about the wellness events coming up.

I tried the Wednesday night complimentary yoga. It's free, but donations are taken at the end. The music is more of an african dance rhythm. They also have cardio shimmy, pole classes, ballet and modern dance, samba, personal cultivation workshops for young ladies, and a host of other monthly themed events. Very reasonably priced $10-$20/class. A really empowering environment for young ladies and us seasoned adults. Tip: Last door on the right. The first doors are to the apartment lofts. I attended a ballerobics dance party. This event occurs every 3rd Friday and each month features a different theme. It is an exercise class disguised as a party ;-) I considered the event to be somewhat of a sampler of the many fitness classes that are offered here on a regular basis. The theme of this particular party was soca and reggae, need I say more??? The environment is very warm, friendly and welcoming even to a "shy", novice like myself. This class had about 20-30 women and 3 instructors throughout the course of the nite. Each instructor was very skilled and changed the vibe of the class with their unique personalities. We were encouraged to bring a refreshment to share and by the end of the nite had a great assortment. I cannot give away every little treasure that this place has to offer, but I will say expect to be taken outside of your comfort zone within a supportive environment while at the same time feeling liberated. I definitely hope to attend again and recommend trying it. It is an exciting alternative to a traditional workout. My concern was parking. It doesn't have a private lot, but at the time of day that I went (after 7pm), there was ample parking on the street. Note the new address: 1301 Lafayette Detroit, MI
