I've done Bikram Yoga before, and was looking for a studio close to home to try out and get my exercise on. After finding a groupon for this place, I purchased it and am glad I found this place. For starters, they have an amazing schedule. Classes at all hours of the day, 7 days a week. They have a variety of instructors, and I had the courtesy to have 3 different ones during the 4 classes I took while attending this studio. All took care during the classes, and gave personal attention as well to new students, along with people who were regulars. If they saw that you were struggling with a pose, they would take the time to help you perfect it, which I liked. The studio itself is clean and nice! They have special carpeting in here that doesn't seem to absorb a lot of the stink that I've experienced at other studios in the past. Also the bathrooms are spectacular! Plenty of toilets, showers, sinks, and places to clean up afterwards if you should need it. They have a little shop in the front where you can buy water, coconut juice, yoga mats and other small ticket items you should want or need for yoga. You can also sign up for class online, which I did for one of my classes to make sure I had a spot. Great place, totally worth checking out. read more

I finally had the courage to try Bikram Yoga (105 °F, 90 minutes, 26 Asanas). Detroit BIkram offered the convenience and the irresistible $25.00 introductory price for 2 weeks unlimited classes to new students. I went ahead and checked their schedule online, registered and also signed up for classes. The website is pretty easy to navigate and very handy. A Detroit Bikram member can also purchase classes, read blogs and newsletters online. Registered members have access to both locations (Farmington & Troy). After reading the "First Timers Guide" found on the website, I tried to hydrate to prepare for my first class. I arrived 30 minutes early, signed the waiver and got ready for class. Robert, the instructor was very helpful in answering questions and giving beneficial advices. Three important things you need in the class: yoga mat, large towel and water. The well-lit yoga room is quite large and you can really feel the heat and humidity. The mirrors surrounding the studio are very unusual for me since they are very distracting and judgmental. But since it is Bikram Yoga, Robert insisted that all students keep their eyes open all the time to create awareness, presence and deeper concentration. Being in a hot environment makes me really tired and drowsy. He also encouraged breathing normally and completely forgetting about ujjayi breath. The energy in the room was phenomenal. Students came in different age groups and were very friendly and encouraging. The ratio of men and women attending the class was almost the same. The ten o'clock class was also practically full. Soothing music wasn't played and students are pretty much just paying attention to the instructions by the teacher. the instructor will also prompt you to drink water in between asanas. I started the yoga practice wearing shorts and a tank top, by the middle of the practice; I pretty much just had the shorts on. Sweat dripping all over the place and students were still executing strong poses. My first time was really challenging. I actually felt nauseous and dizzy after 40 minutes in, I was convinced that I wouldn't make it through the entire practice and started folding my yoga mat for an embarrassing exit (there are mirrors everywhere, students know what everyone is going). Good thing Robert encouraged me to stay and just be in a laying posture (savasana), which actually worked. I was able to get back in the game in less than 5 minutes. I was able to successfully finish the entire session despite the challenging circumstances. My experience ended with a cold shower and a well-deserved protein shake and Naked Coconut Water (for electrolytes). The studio offers yoga-clothing merchandise and sports drinks for purchase. Mats and towels are also available for rent at a reasonable price. Advice to first timers: HYDRATE all day long!!!! I will redeem myself every time I attend a Bikram class and hopefully get stronger and acclimated. Shanti! read more

Both studios are nice, aside from a sweat smell, but I don't think there's any avoiding that. Had a unlimited yearly membership and that is worth it in my book. This is a great studio. All of the staff is professional and well trained...and the students have a great deal of respect for yoga and others. I have been doing yoga for about 5 years, Bikram for about 3 months and there is definitely something very addictive and almost magical about Bikram. The cancellation policy is a money grab in my case. I canceled my monthly membership because I could not get my work schedule to match up with any of their offerings. Now called Thrive Hot Yoga, it's the best Bikram hot yoga I've ever been to. This yoga studio was extremely welcoming knowing I was new and kept me flexible as I age not so gracefully. After a few sessions I was able to not only touch my toes but was able to touch my PALMS to the floor. Backaches, sore muscles, all a thing of the past once I began a 2x per week regimen. Wonder what a daily regimen might do, maybe I'll gain an inch in height as my spine and ligaments become more limber. Once done, had ample time to just lay there in nirvana, my body and mind feeling on cloud nine. After about 15 minutes of feeling like a million bucks I take a cold shower and my body and mind continue to thank me until bed time Wish all my family and friends would participate. Can't think of something better for your mental and physical health. read more

Love how some of them are always going beyond to help students have the right postures. Also - if they see many of the students doing it wrong or could adjust just a wee bit, they talk about it and demonstrate it. Point is they want us to be the best we can be! If you have never done hot yoga or even yoga period. Bikram yoga is a must try. At first you might think you have gone s little coo coo, working out in 106 degree room with a bunch of strangers... Or one friend you suckered into coming. Well you are! So don't worry. The Work out- I have done many forms of yoga and this is by far my favorite. This routine strengthens the mussels, while stretching them as well. It hits those sore places in my shoulders and back that only a well trained massage therapist can get. The heat helps with stretching and loosening the muscles. Advice- drink plenty/ a ton of water through out the day before hand, listen to the instructors, and breathe!! I know that sounds silly but you may hold your breath or be focusing on the heat. I did not truly enjoy it till I learned to properly breath. And if you didn't fall in love the first time. Try it a couple more time. Try different instructors. The staff- the owners are two of the nicest people. Their staff are super sweet and really take time to help me better my practice. I've been to many yoga studios, including Bikram, mostly in Chicago. Went here with a friend once. If you are looking for Bikram, this place is fine. It's nothing special, but there is nothing wrong with it either. They have nice changing rooms, which I liked. However, the floors smelled like sweat, and every time we laid down, the smell was overwhelming. The instructor was ok. It was almost like listening to a tape recording. She didn't provide any pointers or advice, like I've see in other Bikram yoga studios, so that newcomers can still benefit from harder poses. She was average. The whole experience was just ok. Before my first class I took very seriously what their website recommended about staying well hydrated, times of eating, etc. Now drinking water all day is part of my life. My very first class ever I think I muttered "you've got to be kidding me" numerous times along with numerous expletives. I had no balance, falling all over the place (luckily my sister was to my side!), couldn't touch my toes, etc. Despite how novice I was and the inability to do most poses to completion I couldn't wait to try it again. I was hooked after day 1! Best piece of advise- MIND OVER MATTER. You can't let yourself get worked up by the heat. Drink a lot of water and be well rested. I notice I have a harder time in class when I am lacking sleep. The instructors here are wonderful. Most of them get out onto the floor and help with your alignment making sure you are doing the pose to the best of your ability. As a new person to Bikram Yoga I find this to be very helpful and encouraging. It s a NO PRESSURE atmosphere. No pressure from the instructors and none from your peers as each person is focused on only themselves. Totally non-judgmental. The TROY studio is very, very nice and clean. The flooring is unique, mirrors on two sides of the studio, very nice washrooms with a few showers that are hot commodities! There isn't much of a smell unless you come to a class that is immediately following a previous class- then its a little musty. I have never smelled an odor from my neighbors in class- which is interesting because sometimes the classes are huge and we are tightly packed. If you are germ freak, like me, you might find this atmosphere a little challenging as you walk around barefoot; watch people blow their nose, not wash their hands, put their snot rag on the floor, then touch the doors; see sweat flying that isn't yours and [GASP!] it actually land on your towel. But again, its MIND OVER MATTER! The mini improvements I notice bring me such happiness in class that I quietly cheer myself on "YES! I finally was able to balance for the entire pose!!!!" Test your mental strength and try it out! read more

I am a big fan of Bikram Yoga. I first tried it at the studio in Farmington Hills (same owners) about 5 1/2 years ago. I was very excited to when this studio opened close to home. The studio is small, but they made great use of the space. Obviously, I can't speak for the men's room, but the ladies' room has plenty of space for changing, bathrooms, and showers. I've been in a few studios that have little to no changing area or showers, so this is spacious to me! It's also kept very clean. I've enjoyed all of the instructors so far and they seem to love what they do. It's clear that the instructors want to help each student as much as possible. They constantly challenge students by offering 30- and 60-day challenges, which is creates a lot of camaraderie among students. There are a lot of class times to choose from. The owners have always been open to feedback. When they first opened, they asked students about having a 6am class. They received a lot of requests, so they offer a 6am class, Monday-Friday! Getting up to go to that class was painful during my 30-day challenge, but I'm grateful that it was available. They offer a variety of class packages. They also have a student work program that will allow a student to trade work time for classes, which is nice for those who want to practice but can't afford it. I also like that your class package can be used at both locations (Farmington Hills). The Farmington Hills location is on my way home, and this one is only a few minutes away, so it makes it super easy to find a class time that works with my schedule. If you've never tried Bikram Yoga, be sure to go to their website first. There is plenty of information to prepare you. It isn't for everyone. I've taken about a dozen people, and most of them hated it after the 1st visit. Even after several years of practice, there are days that the heat smacks me in the face. I get over it, and love every second of it. If you asked me if I liked Bikram Yoga the first 5 classes, I would've told you, "NO! It sucks!". For whatever reason, I refused to let the heat get the best of me, learned to be patient with myself, and now I love it. read more

This studio has classes pretty much all day long which is great. The instructors are helpful and professional and the classes are well taught. This studio in Troy has a particular dirty cat like smell that is just too much for me. The shower area is nice and clean but tiny for the amount of people that come to the class. It is so muggy and crowded in there it is not worth it to shower because you are still sweating after. If you have to go to class then work after it is not suitable. They have another studio that I enjoy going to much better. read more

This is a great place to come and heal. The staff is courteous and helpful. The owners are very approachable as well as knowledgeable. I have throughly enjoyed my decision to join. this is the BEST bikram studio i've ever been too!! 1- its super super clean, for such a sweaty activity, this studio has a special type of flooring that captures the sweat with no stink (some how its like magic!), there is a giant long room - which could totally fit 60 ppl - not that i like the 60 ppl classes. YOU MUST DRINK TONS OF WATER 24 hours before going to the class, and DO NOT eat 2 hours before you go! You'll puke. 2 - when you are 23 years and younger, its only a $10 drop in fee !! UNREAL - especially since I'm not always in the area. $1 for a mat rental, also awesome! 3- theres tons of drink options available like coconut waters, flavored waters and juices This location also has a whole locker room! with 2 showers and 2 bathroom stalls, my Ann Arbor studio doesn't even have a bathroom. ERICA is the shit - totally talks you through to fully feel the mind over matter, unlike some other teachers i've had where its like drill sargent feel. read more

I liked this studio better than the one in Ann Arbor but it was much more crowded. I went on a Tuesday morning at 10am and there were 60 people in class. I really wish you were able to sign up for a class before hand and they limited the number of students per class. It was really distracting having that many people in the studio especially because I didn't feel like I had enough room to do all the poses. Other than being very crowded, I didn't have any complaints about the studio. read more

I have been practicing yoga for over 10 years. I'm not sure what the big rave is about. I do have experience with different levels of yoga instructors. The entry of this place is nice - contemporary and clean lines. The lobby area near the Bikram room is very tight and narrow. The cubby hole places where you put your shoes is small. I don't remember seeing any lockers (I guess you need to leave your valuables in your car). The class was good, just not great. The voice of the instructor was robot-like, like she had done the class a million times (maybe she had). She offered no alighment or adjustments. She just barked commands, like a drill sergeant. I like the idea of doing yoga in a Florida-like humidity-filled room - THAT sounds great! Doing the same poses almost every class? Where is the variety? Where is the challenge? It is like watching the same TV episode or eating the same dinner every day. No thank you, ma'am. The instructor spoke to me before class. She was almost overwhelmingly nice and welcoming. After the class was over, she spent all her time talking to her co-worker, while I browsed around the lobby. She didn't even ask how I liked the class. She didn't tell me about the packages they had to offer. Nothing! I yoga-ed my out of that place. Wait for a GroupOn if you want to try this place. I understand why they don't offer a free class for the first-time visitor --- she/he would realize that $18 for a robot, rerun class is a RIP-OFF. Overall, I had a OK experience, just not a great experience. Will I go back? Probably not, but I might consider trying a different Bikram studio. Namaste :-) read more

I've always wanted to try out bikram yoga and figure out what the hype is all about. I regularly practice hot vinyasa yoga, and I noticed some notable differences between the two after my first experience. Bikram is hotter - they set the room to 105 degrees (yikes!) Your first class will surely be tough to get through if you're not used to the heat. I recommend looking at their website, which gives a lot of helpful information on what to expect and what to do before your first class. Since bikram is 90 miinutes and set to a very high temperature, bikram is less dynamic than the yoga I'm used to, but still I found it challenging! The poses you do in class are "beginner," but you can go deeper into the poses for more of a challenge. I was sore the next day! Also, one thing I usually have problems with when doing yoga is the intimidating and judgmental atmosphere from the people around me. Here, however, I did not experience that. Everyone seemed to worry about only what they were doing. That's one thing I really like about this studio and practice. The studio has very nice bathrooms/locker rooms, but I can imagine it can get too crowded. The staff/instructors are also friendly and professional. Prices are pretty average for a yoga studio, but they also have student specials and packages. If you are interested in trying out bikram yoga, this is a great place to try out! read more

My first class experience was hard but it was one of the best yoga classes of my life. I have done various forms of yoga but never Bikram. The instructor was reassuring and supportive. The class environment is very positive. I have been to yoga studios that have felt like the league of hipster pretentious self-obsession so if you have had the unfortunate experience of that do not let it turn you off of yoga all together. Here there is much more positive energy. The heat was hard but I could feel the benefits on my body of detoxing and stretching out better. After my first class I felt pretty rough for the rest of the day but the next day I felt really good. I am loving it. read more

Beautiful studio, you would never know how nice it is if you were only looking at the plaza it's located in. The instructor was very welcoming and encouraging during the session. I've only done Bikram once before and I had a better experience here. It's extremely intense and the heat and humidity did get to me, but I know with practice it's something I could handle. Went to a Sunday 11 o'clock class. The teacher never stoped talking. I get it, we need to know how to do the pose. But take a BREATH! We are all adults we really don't need to know every little thing it was too much like work who really wants to have someone tell them how to put 1 foot in front of the other. Convenient location if you're a health nut as it's located near a Bally's and directly next to a Powerhouse Gym. Staff is usually friendly and accommodating. I recommend this location to any Bikram Yogi and anyone else willing to try out this steamy energizing workout. For new comers: wear the least amount of clothing you're obligated to wear in front of strangers - nobody cares what your body style is. Definitely hydrate throughout the day you go and sit near a door or window on your first day. Make sure to bring a yoga mat and large towel with you as well. I have been going to Detroit Bikram yoga studio for last 3 months. It is a nice place and well organized. I like yoga and all the positions that you practice at this location. I'm visiting from Washington state and did the bikram yoga class just yesterday In the Troy area. I'm originally from Detroit and moved out of state in 2009 but Started bikram yoga in their studio in Grosse Pointe Park in 2006. My experience with the bikram practice in Troy was an awesome one :) very knowledgeable and supportive instructor I had encountered as well as dedicated students:) I practice regularly in Washington state and there is slight differences With practice but I still feel the challenge and motivation ofcourse:). I do bikram and vinyasa (both hot) and I did notice a difference in room temp In the Troy studio. It was actually less hot for me compared to the WA studio I attend. Overall I'd recommend this studio to those visiting out of state. read more

I tried Bikram for the first time recently. It's not for everyone (specifically those with heart issues, intolerance to heat, or pregnant women) but if you like warm weather and tolerate it fairly well then it may help you just a tiny bit more than the average person during the 90 min of 105 degree heat. Though I don't think the heat has to be that high to benefit from the warmth required to loosen muscles and keep them easily flexible, I did like my first class, the special attention, and the welcoming nature of the class and instructor. They encouraged me to take frequent breaks, and to just relax and breath and to keep my goal of staying all 90 minutes even if I couldn't participate in the poses. I felt very welcomed and am looking forward to going back on a regular basis. I think if there are some days i don't want the intense sweat-filled experience I would maybe pepper my bikram workouts with regular temperature yoga at other studios, but overall this is a great facility. Clean, womens bathroom (not sure about mens) has showers, and cubbies for belongings. No one brings belongings other than water, mats and towels into the room so leave your valuables at home. read more

This is one of my favorite places to practice yoga. It took a long time for me to get the courage to go to attend the hot yoga class but I'm so happy I did. The teachers are very kind, patient, well trained and most of all they take a personal interest in the students. When the teacher notices a posture that is being done incorrectly they will quickly correct the student (or the whole class at times) to ensure each student is getting the benefits of the posture. Each class I strive to push myself a little more and I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I get kudos from the teacher as they notice my improvement and adjustments. The studio is very clean which is surprising because you would think the hot room, filled with sweaty bodies would smell awful but the unique floor and ventilation system keeps the room from smelling fowl. **Note to new students- drink half your body weight in ounces of water before class, 1/3 or 2/3 of that fluid intake should be electrolytes. I bring a bottle of Gatorade in the room in case I get light headed. Please make sure to refrain from talking before, during or after class to be respectful to other students. read more

I started doing Bikram yoga a few months ago in the Troy and sometimes Farmington Hills locations. The practice is extremely addictive as well as frustratingly challenging!
