There were actually two gentlemen who came out, but the second worker, Castro, who came to dig the hole to place my sister's cup back, was incredibly kind, patient, and understanding. When I say he took his time and handled everything with such care and gentleness, I truly mean it. He carefully cleaned up the area around the hole he dug and even swept off my sister's headstone afterward. Watching the amount of respect and compassion he showed while doing his work almost brought me to tears. It really was impressive, and it meant the world to me. I also want to say how much I appreciated the promptness in coming out to fix the issue. The kindness and professionalism shown during such an emotional moment did not go unnoticed. Went to visit several graveside today. It was so disappointing. Some of the headstones were so covered with layers of dried mud that they were completely unreadable. They should be ashamed. Union Cemetery is managed by resources that are not qualified to manage property. I live out of state. I paid for a family member plot on 6/13/2024...paid in full. I have contacted the office to mail out a deed speaking the Lucy and her supervisor on four different occasions with promises to mail of the deed the next business day. It is now 1/31/2025 and I have yet to receive my deed that was promised to me in June of 2024. I am a busy professional and I do not have time to take off from my work during business hours to remind an incompetent to mail out a deed for a plot that has been paid in full. I do not recommend doing business with Historic Union Cemetery! I wish you the best if this is your only option. read more

The process to bury my grandmother has been very frustrating. They are not helpful during the process and give very little information. I call and email without any response. I let them know they are making this process extremely hard and I never received an apology. Unfortunately we already have so many family members buried here and my grandmother already had her plot so we could not change it but I would not recommend using this facility. The staff are unresponsive, not knowledgeable, and not empathetic which is terrible for being in the business they are in. read more

Tammy m.very explosive on any complaints on the care of the cemetery.the grass cutter has the mower exhaust towards the headstone and it stains the headstone and the cut grass sticks to the headstone.there are 5 plots in my family plot but she refuses to say there is that amount.they intentional did not put the headstone foundation in correctly for my dad.cement is slap on the ground .then the headstone is laid incorrectly laid on top of the wet cement.refuse to redo it.the board of directors of the cemetery refuse to do anything abt her.(h Edward bean).I have an aunt that was buried there in 1933,3month old baby in the last plot.she refuses to say where she is buried.we the family all know where.she claim there no plots available.this person has no business dealing with the public not in the least the deceased! read more

Still waiting on my sister's headstone for over a year. Paid in full and I knowing others (whom have recently departed) that have received theirs. This bussiness has been robbing that community for years. They don't keep up the grounds. And you might catch the grounds keepers having an alcoholic beverage on what appears to be their break. I recently lost my husband and was in process of getting my headstone but over a few month there was no communication or calls retuned. I had to go somewhere else to get our headstone so finally got it and they refused to install it as now there saying the measurements are not correct but this issue never came up over the three to four months of working with them. Now they are not willing to work with the other funeral home to get this resolved. My las call to Griselda the manager she was rude and uncooperative.. I'm sure there are other families going through this as you can see by looking at the grounds so many graves with no headstones. I just want to lay my husband to rest this has been so upsetting and the manager has no sympathy for families. Would never recommend. read more

So the BS continues!! I have posted before how my family has been dealing for this cemetery. I didn't even want to give one star. It took a life time to get my sisters headstone with out her photo. We have been going back and forth with them about her photo for over a year and a half. We went in again today 11-28-2022 after visiting her and asked about her picture. They looked us dead in the eye's and said they don't have a picture for her. Mind you we have already took two photos up there because they couldn't find them. Now to add insult to injury they need another one and it may take 2 or more months to come in. I'm so over all of the BS. I wish we would have layed her to rest at green lawn. read more

My nephew's friend was murdered over a year ago. I went in to pay on his funeral services and the woman who arranges services told me not to pay more. That the family is getting a "big check" for this. She didn't realize I am also the sister of a murder victim. She was referring to a grant given by the county for victims of violent crimes. It's $5000. That's not even enough to pay for a respectable service. The staff made it seem like the death of this young man was some type of come-up for his family. It's been a year and I'm still horrified that these type of people work in this field. I will never recommend this cemetery and your staff is lucky I kept this to myself instead of telling the family who was actively grieving but I knew it would worsen their pain. read more

I cannot say enough about the care we were given by Doris. Throughout the entire process Doris kept us informed and truly felt like our feelings were always a priority. This was one of the hardest thing I've ever had to do and she truly lessened the heartache and stress by making it such a genuinely easy process. Wonderful people here to help during our time of grief. We brought a headstone from Oklahoma and the cemetery couldn't have been more accommodating. Many thanks to Jose the cemetery manager for getting the stone set while we were in town. We are so appreciative. This is a beautiful cemetery and it's very well maintained. The gentleman who actually set the stone was so gentle and kind and caring. I've never had to go through this grief before-- long distance & bringing a tombstone 1,900 miles--but this group of caring people made this a trip to remember for generations to come. read more

Boy, do I love a good cemetery. No, I'm not a goth and I don't play with Ouija boards... very often. But, I do love history. Especially when it's in relation to my family and hometown. Union Cemetery is not in the best part of town, but it keeps up it's appearance nicely. Recently, they've undergone some management changes (or so I've been told) and with it, started things like "Historic Tours." With so many Bakersfield notables, it's a wonder someone didn't think of this sooner. Mosleums and memorials dot the property. Something that is very rare in modern cemeteries. There's a large Veteran plot, some even dating back to the Civil War. But what should interest everyone is the internment of Bakersfield's most important man - Colonel Thomas Baker himself. So next time you're cruisin' Chester or bumper to bumper on Brundage, think about the founders and consider paying them a visit at one of Bakersfield's oldest cemeteries. read more

It makes me sad to come here. Not sad because my mom is buried here, I don't have a big emotional attachment to her gravesite. I'm sad because it's so poorly tended and neglected. With the racial prejudice endemic to Bakersfield, Jews were relegated to a back lot, next to what was supposed to be the Chinese plot (but seemingly never used for Chinese burial). It's terribly untended. Weeds, dog poop on gravestones, headstones sinking and tilting. There are no stones available to put on grave sites. The only reason it gets 2 stars is for the very helpful and kind desk staff. I haven't seen my mom's grave in over 25 years. I see no reason to come back soon. It's not a place I can pay my respects without getting pissed off that the historic Jewish cemetery is not a priority in Bakersfield. read more

My brother passed away at the beginning of the month. I was helping my mother with arrangements and we picked out a different place to have his body cremated, but last minute they told her they were unwilling to let her have some of her wishes carried out. So in a panic, I started calling around and I found the Historic Union Cemetary. I spoke with Jordan K. and knew right away this is who we were going to go with. Let me tell you that every step of the way, he was personable, helpful, and respectful. He helped my mother get all of her wishes carried out the exact way she wanted them. He worked so hard and let us text him and call him sometimes multiple times a day. I can't even begin to express our appreciation for him and the way we were treated. I don't know about any of the other staff or funerals since we had a cremation done, but if you need services that Jordan can help you with, I would 100% recommend him. The facility and grounds looked nice from what I could see as well. read more
