I have had good luck in the past with this company, having ordered a couple of pair of shoes in the past that have lasted well for me. Recently, I ordered a pair of shoes in my size. When they arrived, they were 1/2" shorter than the other shoes I have, thus I couldn't wear them. When I tried to return them to get a larger size, I was told that I would have to pay return shipping, they would only credit me back the shoe purchase price (not original shipping), and then would charge me shipping again on the new pair. I would understand this if I had made an error on the order, but the shoes, even though they're marked the same size, are not the same size. Hitchcock Shoes' fault, they should take accountability. Instead, it cost me $30+ for nothing. I chose not to order a different size, due to their lack of customer service. My dad has purchased shoes from Hitchcock for a couple of years and has almost always had to return the shoes. For over a year they have advertised shoes 8E size and for over a year when you call they give the same response "our manufacture plant is having issues, it should be a couple of months", "we have had to change manufactures". When you ask then where is the plant you get two answers, China and then when you hang up and call back the plant is in Mexico. There catalogs advertising 8E are COMPLETELY false. It's a real shame!! Service: I have not visited there for a while, but I used to take my elderly father there to get shoes, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and needed wider shoes. Selection: He loved their shoes. They had a great selection and he could always find what he was looking for! Price: I did a compare and contrast of their current prices and they are very fair. I purchased a set of shoes (13 8E) according to their shoe fitter. After 3 days the sole separated from the leather upper. I sent them back to the company at a cost of $26 which I understand. They said that it was normal wear and tear and not a defect. Horrible construction that only lasts days! I would say be aware of purchasing shoes from this company. While the shoes are pricey, the quality and durability of the shoes does not match the price. I purchased a pair of shoes for $150. Four weeks later the side of the shoe tore open. The Customer Service Department told me I had to pay to return the shoes to them and if they decide it was their fault I would have to pay to ship it back to me. On top of that, if I wore the shoes I would only get a partial refund. They give customers the run around with their horrible after-service because they have no posted refund policy. I have bought several shoes from them over the years. I am now actively looking for another vendor. My issue is really with the Projet shoes (made in China) they sell. I wear 16 Sketchers, but the Projets 16s I ordered were way too big, as were the 15s. I incurred $40 of shipping costs for that. The 14s I am wearing came with ballpoint pen marks on them. Maybe China does not have people that wear large sizes they can check; the sizes are incorrect by American standards, and they fit oddly. The ankle are cut too high, causing discomfort, and the soles are thin. They look beautiful, but that's not sufficient. I've been purchasing shoes exclusively from this company for 25 years -- easily 20 pairs of shoes and sneakers. Though I could order directly online, I always call first and s/w a "fitter." My usual size is 6.5 3E but, after discussing with the "fitter," who has all my orders on record and knows that some shoes are either larger or smaller than the stated size, I've successfully ordered 6.5 5E, 7 4E, and even, for a particular slipper I regularly order, 8.5 5E. Anyway, after waiting for a Saturday (the only day she now works) to s/w my favorite fitter, Marie, I ordered two pairs of sneakers size 6.5 5E. The sneakers had the same platform but one was grey with straps and the other white with laces. So when I receive the sneakers I couldn't even get my toes in either pair. The sneakers have a removal cushion insole, and after removing the insoles from the sneakers, I could place my foot in them but they were very narrow and pinched my foot badly. I call and s/w Karen. She asked me if I was aware that there's rolled paper stuffed into the toe. My goodness, really? When I told her about removing the removable insert, she accused me of damaging the sneakers. I told her that I had s/w Marie and have a 25-year order history on file, and her reply was well, our customers expect to pay the shipping charges to exchange or refund purchases. I don't. Not after speaking with a fitter I've been working with for years. Cost me $18.03 to ship the two pairs of sneakers back. I s/w Karen again today and she refused to refund the $18.03. But here's the real kicker -- I paid $10.36 Georgia state tax on the sneakers, and while Hitchcock will fully credit and exchange the two pairs of sneakers for a Drew sneaker I had purchased before that I know fits (7 4E), Hitchcock did not refund that tax and also charged me another $9.00 in GA tax to boot! (no pun intended). I want Hitchcock to refund the $18.03 in shipping charges to return the sneakers and the $10.36 in tax. If the shoes are returned then they were never sold, especially if you are refunding (by exchanging) the purchase price. How can a company charge tax twice on what is essentially the same sale? I want a total of $28.39 refunded to me. Final notes. I purchased two pairs of dress shoes, both size 6.5 3E, from Hitchcock in the past four years: brown Cheadles from Great Britain, a $330 shoe, and a basic black (style 1040), about $110. Both have leather soles. Well, with business casual and WFH now the norm, and I rarely attend formal social functions, these two pairs should last the rest of my life; I hardly wear either pair. What I do need regularly are sneakers and shoes for work with polyurethane soles and leather uppers. For the former I've now buy $150 Drew sneakers (as Hitchcock's lesser priced sneakers, even brand names like New Balance and Propet, last 5 or 6 months tops). And I buy the style 150 work shoe, size 6.5 5E, and those shoes take a beating, but I'm going to need a new pair soon. Well, guess what? Both Orthofeet and Dr. Comfort offer nearly identical shoes, more expensive at $150 vs. Hitchcock's $109 for the style 150, but they offer free shipping and 30 or 60 day wear periods with full exchange privileges. And the Drews I can buy direct. I bought a pair of Dunham waterproof boots on Marie's recommendation two years ago which I wear only to walk the dogs in the morning (on the wet grass) and the right boot leaks; I have to seal the stormwelt with caulk and waterproofing paste often. This may not be Hitchcock's fault though, but still... Finally, the 8.5 5E slipper I mentioned at the beginning of this review? Backordered until Nov. 30th! I've paid in full. Wasn't mentioned in either the catalog or the website when I ordered the slippers with the two pairs of sneakers on August 17th. Goodbye, Hitchcock. P.S. I purchased men's wide slippers from Hitchcock. The shoes are well made with a strong sole, but extremely expensive for a slipper. The problem with these is that the heel is very short, almost like a scuff. So it keep falling off my foot. I didn't get around to trying them on for a couple of weeks, and found I just missed the 30 day return deadline. This is entirely my fault. They are basically a winter item, and I just didn't take the time to try them on sooner. The time period starts when the credit card is charged, not when the item actually arrives. Also, to return an item you must ship back in the original box/package. If you know exactly what you want, don't plan to make a return or exchange, and are willing to pay a high price, this is a good company to work with. Otherwise, be careful. read more

I need men's 9.5 6E+ shoes to fit my very wide feet with high arches and custom orthotics. After trying a bunch of shoes (e.g., Propet, Orthofeet, Drew, New Balance, etc.), I decided to order the 8E from here, despite their shipping and return policy. After several emails with Hitchcock, asking for recommendations, I decided to order the 1902 style, Navy Mesh HS2 Sport Casual, in 9.5 8E (I gave my measurements but did not let them size me). I had to search the internet for a coupon code, which pretty much covered the shipping. The shoes were too small in every dimension (length, width, and instep). I also didn't like the style and thought they wouldn't fit right even in a larger size (the back of the heel and tongue bothered me, and the shape of the shoe was too narrow in the midfoot). For reference, all of my shoes are 9.5 (5E and 6E currently) and are usually slightly too long. I paid for 2 day return shipping (discounted through UPS.com) and I asked for a recommendation for an exchange (with an written explanation of my issue). They received the shoes on a Monday and it took them almost the entire week to get back to me, even after I emailed them. I ended up having to call them and the woman on the phone could only recommend buying a size up, since according to her, "there is no other style in width 8E." I wasn't going to argue with her or direct her to other styles, so I asked for a refund. I did receive a full refund on my purchase. read more

It has been about 15 years since I last ordered from Hitchcock. The reason I quit was that I ordered a size 13-6E Hitchcock-made shoe which turned out to be very narrow [more like 13-4d]. Customer service told me about all the different "Lasts" so different shoe manufacturers have different shoe measurements. I'm sorry, but when I measure my foot on one of those contraptions at a shoe store, they all measure 13-5E. Doesn't the Hitchcock use the same tool? So I had to pay the return shipping since they did not consider it to be their fault. Therefore I stopped buying from them. Hence, the 2-star score. These last 15 years I have been buying from Shoebuy [now shoes.com]. Free shipping to you but it costs to return to them. I ordered some Propet Stability Walker shoes from them in size 14-5E width [their XXW]. Well, Propet must have recently been making their shoes smaller because I compared the new 14-5E shoe to an earlier 13-5E shoe and it was almost the same length but much narrower [by about 1/2 inch]. See photo below. I complained to Shoes.com and they granted me free return shipping because I was a long term customer of theirs. I even wrote to customer service at Propet but they never replied. I called to complain because this was about to cost me $25 for the shipping both ways. The customer care rep told me it was probably because of the liner which makes the boot fit small. I explained that, if that had been explained on their website info I could have ordered a size larger. They wouldn't budge on the shipping. The owner responded to say they were sorry I was unhappy and THANKED ME for pointing out their error telling me they were changing their description of the boots. Really?! Thank me but don't take actual responsibility by refunding the shipping cost. You've been warned. They lost more than the $25 would have cost them to make this right. I've purchased shoes from Hitchcock before - EEE's are hard to find. Most recently, I ordered cold weather boots for a trip to NH over Christmas. I used priority mail, for which the website said delivery would happen within seven days - in time for a trip we were making to NH. The boots arrived on January 11. Hitchcock denied a refund on the $30 priority mail charge. I understand they can't control USPS delays, but they also should advertise delivery windows on their website for which they can't deliver. I like this company for wide shoes. My surgeon recommended this website to order wide shoes after I had surgery on my feet. The prices for the name brand shoes (New Balance) are expensive but the 'Hitchcock' more affordable brand is priced pretty much like a shoe store. I found the dress shoes (higher end) to be less expensive then a fine men's shoe store. The sneakers I bought are a perfect fit. I used to have to buy an 11/5 or 12 to get room in the front and now I get an 11 super wide and they are really comfortable. The delivery was prompt, the shoes in great shape. They had me do a foot tracing and send it in to recommend the right pair of shoes and they hit it on the first try. One a subsequent order I called and the person was able to tell me what size I ordered the first time and made comments about the tracing so I think they have a way of keeping them on file. Hitchcock Wide Shoes for Men: Online retailer of mens footwear. In theory, Hitchcock's way of doing online business is good..... very good. They obtain the customer's foot measurements in detail and then tell you they will use those measurements to determine the correct shoe size for your feet. This is great, as it takes the guesswork out of purchasing shoes online. Everyone knows that shoe manufacturers' sizing can vary. And Hitchcock's method of obtaining the customer's physical measurements would, in theory, remedy the online footwear purchasing problems associated with the variation in sizing. I have wide feet like a freakin duck... my feet are w-i-d-e. I've lived my entire life in shoes that never really quite fit. So, when I first placed my order, I ordered a shoe that claimed it was a "6E" width. "Wow," I thought, "that might actually be too wide. I've never seen a shoe that was too wide for my feet, but hey, I've never seen a 6E. " When filling out the online order form, Hitchcock asked some detailed questions regarding the size of my feet and then asked me to physically measure my largest foot and supply the results. They even had a comment box that allowed me to further elaborate on the enormity of my feet. I thought, "man, this might actually work. I just may get a shoe that fits. Ol' Hitchcock says that whatever shoe size I think I need, they will match my measurements to the shoe that fits best. OK, great!" Click.... click.... enter...... Go. NOT! When I received the order and pulled the shoes from the box, my jaw hit the floor. These shoes are a size 6E width?.... guess again, Clarence! I knew before I even got the shoes near my feet that they wouldn't fit. I have shoes that are labeled "wide" and "E" that are wider than these pinner, pointy things. Hitchcock did not deliver. They did not verify the physical properties of the shoe against the measurements I gave them. A stock clerk no doubt received the order, retrieved a shoe that was labeled as the size I ordered, and then they shipped it out. They obviously did not look at the shoes to see that they would not fit my feet. When I emailed Hitchcock to tell them the shoes didn't fit, they replied by telling me they thought the size I ordered "was a good place to start". WTF? And then proceeded to tell me, "It's not uncommon for first time customers to make an exchange or two before we determine their correct size." W-T-F???? I was dumbfounded. They expect me to pay the shipping costs to send shoes back and forth while they are trying to "determine my correct size"? Did their dog eat my measurements? I don't know what they're doing with the detailed, customer-supplied measurements, because if they had taken the time to examine the shoes, they would have determined that the shoe they sent would not work for me. These people must have large red noses, twenty-four inch feet, and blazing red hair because only a clown could be so stupid. Their instructions for measuring your feet are thorough and precise. They're very accurate in finding a proper fit for you. I've been to their showroom in Hingham; it's small, and only open during odd, abbreviated hours. This is because they are primarily a mail-order outfit. Every time a new pair of shoes from Hitchcock arrives, it's like Christmas. I'm always thrilled because they fit perfectly, and I know I'll have them for years. These are shoes you hang on to, and have resoled rather than tossing them out. They consistently market quality stuff. Hitchcock carries well known brands, as well as their own label. When I was a kid growing up in Massachusetts, i was very active in the Boy Scouts. I got my hiking boots and camp mocs from them. Later in life as a businessman, they provided my dress shoes. After that phase, I grew to prefer boat shoes. and mocs. They've always been my go-to guys. I now reside in Southwest Florida and pretty much just wear flip flops year 'round. I don't need much stuff from Hitchcock any more, but when I want something special, I just jump on their web site and order it.
