A Sunday - Monday stay…read more We celebrated Valentine's the first Sunday-Monday in March in hopes of having the Island to ourselves. Instead of staying at the big hotel on The Strand, we decided to try Schaefer Haus. With two homes to select from, we selected what is Room 2 in the main haus. It is beautiful and filled with antique furnishings. Tammy and the rest of the staff are lovely. Tammy filled us in on the Happy Hour and Breakfast details and showed us our room; what is listed as the Freiberg (and now known as the Laura or Room2.) The room is comfortable. The bathroom includes a claw foot tub with shower head. There are three rooms available on the second floor and two on the third. Okay, here we go. (Let me first say, we have every intention of staying here again.) We arrived early. When we were shown our room, Room 1 and 3 were being cleaned and unoccupied. I was delighted at the idea of having the Haus to ourselves. Within an hour, both rooms were filled, as well as the third floor. As sound travels, I quickly realized there were some flaws in privacy. For instance, there is a second door in the bathroom that is right by the toilet. If opened, it would be into the space at the top of the stairs on the second floor shared by the three rooms. There is a gap at the base of the door that you could pass a stack of two magazines under. On the opposite side of the toilet is the window that is used to gain access to the private balcony. Only a sheer black curtain provides coverage from the two houses across the street. After dark, I turned the bathroom lights off and used the romantic amount of light that comes in through that door I was speaking of earlier. The actual bathroom door in no way secures to the door frame. That said, it stayed closed anytime one of us was depending on privacy. Let's talk sound. Around 2AM, Room 1 or 3 decided it was time to listen to some soothing sounds of Trip-House at volume 11. Okay. This did not wake me, but it woke the husband. However, around 3AM, what sounded like a man and woman began screaming violently at one another. This did wake me with deep concern. Ten minutes later - all quiet. We found out after breakfast, the music was coming from Room 1. Lastly, security. There is a tiny knob on Room 2 that acts as a dead bolt. Lock it! At least twice during the night someone vigorously checked our room doorknob as if they were confused about which room was theirs. Monday morning, breakfast was delicious. While there were no mimosas (which are available on Saturday and Sunday,) the quiche was fantastic and the bacon crisp! Coffee, water, juice, and milk were also available. Schaefer Haus should definitely be on your list for a stay on The Strand!

I…read morepaid a $40 deposit, which was fine and the gentleman who helped me even showed me the room I'd be staying in. This past weekend (2/25-27/22) I checked in and was charged the remaining balance; I'll come back to that in a minute. I'm giving my room key and head to the room. Upon entering the room, I notice the room is clean and has plenty of lighting. I go to unpack my stuff and inspect the room more closely. First problem, I notice that the towels have stains on them, which is crazy. Then I check out the coffee and condiments, the sweetener packets are hard as rocks, and the individual creamers when opened look like they have been sitting there awhile. Additionally, when inspect the bathroom it's mostly clean but there are long strands of someone's hair on the shower wall, GROSS! The bed was somewhat comfortable and the room did come with a mini fridge (empty and clean), and a microwave. The TV seemed to function properly but had these lines on the screen, making me think thst perhaps the screen was failing. I failed, btw to mention any of these problems to the guy that checked me out on Sunday, so that's on me; but if he is worth anything he checks out these reviews and will see the areas he needs to improve upon. Also, the room didn't have a phone, which in today's world might seem ok I guess, but what do you do for the occasional guest that might not have a cell phone? They do exist, so ya. The room did have a chair to sit in, even though it was the cheapest fold-out chair I've ever seen. So now we get to the check out process, which was super easy. But, I had reviewed my bank account the night before and realized I had been overcharged for the room. A little back story... so when I had reserved the room back in January, the gentleman that had helped me quoted me 2 rates, $109 for the "old rooms", (his words, not mine...), and $119 for the "newly renovated rooms". I picked the older room, and it should be noted that all the rooms and had been renovated but there was a new section and an old section. Anyway I pointed out to the owner that he had charged me for the new room rate and not the old one. After a little back and forth, he did refund the difference. Bottom line, there aren't that many options for visitors who can't afford to rent a beach house or don't have an RV to stay at in Crystal Beach. Perhaps this will change soon, I sure hope so. This place was mediocre at BEST; and what's scary is that the other hotel in the area is apparently a glorified roach motel, so disappointing. Maybe the guy who owns and runs this place can stop being such a cheapskate send use some of his inflated room rate money and buy some CLEAN towels, buy some decent chairs for the rooms, get some FRESH coffee packets and condiments, and hire some qualified cleaning staff. For my money, I'll just either rent an RV in the area next time, or stay at a good hotel in Galveston and take the ferry over each day.

First time I didn't have a front desk at a hotel/inn. It worked! I got a code to my room and the room was kind of small, but so perfect. I slept great! It had everything I needed. Even a table to put stuff on. Bathroom was small, but shower was very good! Small sink, but that was fine. The large window looked out into the nice neighborhood. It even had a desk that I utilized! It is less than 1/2 mile to the cruise terminal. It was a perfect location. I went to Moody Gardens which was 15 minutes away from here. Great room. Very clean. I highly recommend staying here. Communication was wonderful through text and email. I would stay here again if I was in Galveston.

Joellyn, the owner, was very hospitable and routinely checked if we needed anything. She offered us drinks on our arrival. My wife liked some cookies that were available, and she provided a package of them for her later that night. Joellyn had breakfast catered by renowned Chef Mary Bass, and it was quite delicious. Delicious breakfast casserole and tamales. It was very close to the Strand and the Seawall, so everything we did was just a short drive. We will definitely be returning to try another room at the Mansion!

Opened in February 2026, this hotel is FRESH, clean and comfortable. We were wow'd by the lobby upon check-in. Beautiful! So much seating to lounge around in. We got a king suite and I was pleasantly surprised we had a full kitchen!! (My husband booked this for us so I was unaware ahead of time.) The suite has a living area with pull out sofa, comfy king-sized bed, and nice bathroom. The outdoor pool was refreshing and there were plenty of lounge chairs. Note: there IS a restroom by the pool. I didn't even know this until I saw a worker cleaning it. There isn't any signage signifying it's a restroom and I literally thought it was the pool pump/mechanical room. Outside there is also tons of tables and chairs for dining as well as a fire pit! The fitness room is spacious and included 3 treadmills, 2 ellipticals and some dumbbells and 2 benches. I always love a FREE breakfast. I eat keto so options are limited but I was able to have some hard boiled eggs. There was scrambled eggs and sausage too but I didn't want them. In addition, other options were bagels, breads, muffins, cereal, make your own waffles, oatmeal with toppings, yogurt and various juices. The coffee bar was nice and even included sugary flavored syrups and cold brew coffee. As for staff, EVERYONE is super super friendly and helpful! Oh my gosh! Even my children commented on how wonderful the employees were! Nonetheless, this is my NEW FAVORITE hotel and I can't wait to stay here again!!!!
