Today's Special (1.24.12): Ginger Infused Pork Belly Salad w/ Sesame Oil Vinaigrette - $9
    Cherylynn N.

Hiyaaa!? I think, HiNoOoOo!!! With its tag-line, "Serving kicking flavors...", I expected more from this Asian-Fusion (Vietnamese & Korean) truck especially when they claim to have "bold and balanced" flavors. Just like a majority of the Asian Fusion trucks out there, they've dumb-downed their flavors in order to appeal to the masses. On its first debut at Off The Grid - UN Plaza today, I wafted through the scents emitting from the Arki Truck (Fried Chicken & Donuts) as I silently cursed my lo-carb diet. #$%^& ^$@#&% What drew me to Hiyaaa! was its menu. II liked that they give you the option to have your meal one of the following ways: 1) ON A ROLL ($7-$9): http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/8OjAOE0ygNiOiGn1H71oaw?select=n3OfbxciZjDr1EO7RGKvCA 2) OVER RICE ($9): http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/8OjAOE0ygNiOiGn1H71oaw?select=XgxE8nVp20UbHfAQmqoF8g 3) IN A SALAD ($9): http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/8OjAOE0ygNiOiGn1H71oaw?select=ZLv0r9Q0PHUDeOx7GBiw3Q You can also do a Combo which is a mini-version of all three for $9. I opted for their Daily Special: Ginger Infused Pork Belly (In a Salad - $9) http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/8OjAOE0ygNiOiGn1H71oaw?select=d17Kj3Rt_zQofppEF54byg The two seared slices of pork belly had a high ratio of lean meat to fat which I appreciated but the bland pork belly had ZERO ginger essence and it was very dry especially around the edges. With a high fat content like pork belly, the fat should keep the lean meat succulent but the lean meat had the texture of pork jerky. One of the quintessential and most enjoyable parts of the pork belly is the crispy rind (skin). Not that I would have eaten it (ok, maybe just a nibble) but there was none. The pork belly was placed alongside fresh mixed greens and pickled carrot and daikon which lacked the familiar acidic punch that I'm used to. Sadly, there was nothing "bold" nor "balanced" about this salad. Perhaps, I should have just got the Fried Chicken and Donuts from the Arki Truck and Hiyaaa'd it at the gym tomorrow morning. *looks down at expanding muffin top* Ummm, ok maybe not... OTHER NOTES: *Friendly service (hence the 3rd star) *Vegetarian options available *CASH ONLY

    Spicy Tofu Bites - I don't recommend

TERRIBLE SERVICE!!! Can't expect much from a food truck. They were posted at the TruckStop location in FiDi. It's later in the afternoon, the lunch crowd is long gone. I ordered a SIMPLE SIDE (spice tofu bites) and it really took me 10 minutes to get PLUS they were pumping out other people's orders of full meals that ordered AFTER ME. That really bothered me. 1) *see picture* Tofu Bites. Wasn't worth the $5.50, really worth $2. Taste, the tofu is mushy and the hot sauce is basically siracha. 2) What took so long to prepare it? I was #27, they served #28, #29, and #30 all who ordered full meals and ordered after me 3) what kind of fusion is this? korean, vietnamese, chinese.... with none of the above nationalities in the truck 4) service was slow Hate me for my review, it is what it is. Sorry. Until the next review....

Another truck I tried at the San Mateo Night Market. I didn't have much in the way of expectations for this truck as I had only heard of the name and not of what they serve so with that in mind my husband and I went with our 'safe' option of ordering Curried Chicken (http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/8OjAOE0ygNiOiGn1H71oaw?select=vhpcljx4UyKVg12gd_DkgA#oj0r0PZi6C4eaoSdN6oZkw) $9. Portion size was decent and I liked the fact that it came with a serving of salad too. The shredded Chicken was somewhat of a surprise to me, mainly because I'm used to having curry with big chunks of Chicken but I really enjoyed the different texture and it made it a lot easier to eat too which at a food truck event is a big plus. Sauce was tasty, not too spicy but the rice was a bit sticky. 3.5 rounded up to a 4.

I was in the mood to try a different food truck at Truck Stop on 1st & Mission, so I gave the comic-book themed truck a try. Hiyaa serves up their take on Asian fusion in somewhat of a Chipotle format menu, in that you... 1. Choose a protein: Bulkogi, Spicy Pork, Lemon Grass Chicken, Curry Chicken, or a Vegetarian option. 2. Choose the form: Sandwich, Salad, Rice Bowl, or with Fries All cost ~$8-10. I had the Bulkogi in a Roll. It was quite tasty, but there is room for a little improvement. The shredded pickled carrots and cucumber slices were nice and spicy, but were topped off a little haphazardly and didn't sit too nicely in the sandwich. The romaine lettuce was unecessary. Also, the baguette was rather chewy. The marinated bulgogi beef tasted okay, but it was a little tough, or maybe it just seemed that way because of the texture of the bread. On the plus side, it was a large sandwich, so it was pretty filling. Maybe I'll try it again another time. I'm interested in the rice options. Hot marinated beef over steaming rice sounds good.

    Lemongrass chicken
    Rosie M.

I ordered the lemongrass chicken in a salad. It's okay. The chicken was really hard to chew and pretty dry even though it was cubed and smothered in sauce. The salad was normal with a few pickled veggies to give it some flavor. On my last visit, I had the curry chicken, and it, too was dry (while drenched in curry). I like to give my restaurants multiple visits before making a review. So sad. The name and truck look really cool, but just could not perform :(

Decent food truck to consider for lunch but Hiyaaa! follows the predictable modular menu of meat option in a rice bowl, salad, or sandwich form factor. The meat options in the case of Hiyaaa! are a combination of Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese. I had a fried chicken rice bowl and it was decent. I liked the textured of the fried chicken but thought the meat was a little dry and under seasoned. But all up when combined with the sauce and the salad, it was a perfectly fine lunch albeit slightly unmemorable. I've heard the Bulgogi beef is pretty decent though. In the vast SF food truck scene, Hiyaaa! isn't a standout but does a decent job at delivering food that carries well as you chow down on the go.

Sampler of beef mini roll, curry chicken over white rice, and sweet bulkogi salad with a hint of spice.
    Nina M.

Tried the sampler combo at Off The Grid. The beef bun was good, especially die to some type of spicy mayo they include. The curry chicken was dry and very boring. Didn't help that it was served over cold rice. The salad was good but the meat on top was dripping with oil. All in all, I'd go with the beef sandwich.

    Spicy Fried Chicken over Fries
    Adam B.

A Chiptole-esqe take on Asian cuisine with your choice of protein (bulkogi, spicy pork, lemongrass chicken, tofu) over your choice of non-protein (sandwich, rice, salad, fries). Tons of flavor packed into each protein option which helps a little go a long way (...though their portions are not little, actually quite reasonable). Spicy Fried Chicken over Fries: If you're gonna go unhealthy, then go all the way! Fried chicken on top of fried potatoes; I felt the diabetus creeping in as I ate this. But so tasty. The chicken chunks are super crunchy, like I left a few pieces at my desk and came back after 2 hours of meetings and they were still crispy. The sauce is like a fancy General Tso's, which is spicier and tastier than Panda Express. The fries catch a nice coating of glaze that drips below eliminating the need for ketchup.

    Beef bulkogi with japchae
    Meghan R.

I'm grateful that Hiyaaa! came to my workplace because we don't have many options for food around, however I was a bit disappointed with the quality of my meal. I had the beef bulkogi over japchae noodles, which was mediocre at best. At $14, I felt that it was overpriced and the quality of the beef was lacking. The meat was also a bit chewy and greasy. The japchae was ok. I appreciate that you can customize your order (choose a protein, choose a side) and I may give them another try if they come to my neck of the woods again.

    Bulkogi Sandwich. "Stuffed" for $9.
    Rodney H.

I was pretty enthusiastic to see Hiyaaa! finally open for business and around my area in SSF. I only had one thing on my mind to try and that was their Bulkogi sandwich which according to their menu contained Beef marinated in korean seasoning, do chua (pickled daikon and carrots), romaine lettuce, mayo, secret sweet and spicy sauce. It costs $7 for regular and $9 if you want it stuffed with double meat. I opted for double meat since I was super hungry for lunch. The sandwich was pretty heavy when I got it so that was a good sign and it was definitely very meaty (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=F_5_UNX-wrAFCXuAkBZRDw&select=vhpcljx4UyKVg12gd_DkgA). And the Bulkogi was tasty, plus the Sweet and Spicy Sauce gave it some really good flavor! I'm a little on the fence with their pricing, but I'd say that the double meat option is a little bit of a splurge. You'll definitely get your money's worth with the amount of meat they put when you go for the "Stuffed" option. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4. There aren't too many Bulkogi sandwich places around my area that I can think of other than Seoul On Wheels and Rhea's Deli, but they're both in the city and not in the peninsula, so I applaud them for being peninsula-based. I'll be trying them again soon to try their pork and chicken options.

This cost $5 for about 10 pieces. Total ripoff.
    Veronica H.

Worst decision of the night! I got some tofu bites and there were about 10 little pieces for $5.50 - seriously?!? The photo is a small container box, and it was barely full. What a waste of money. I went to the Koja truck later for a huge portion of food and much better tasting. Hiyaa blows.

    Heather K.

Had my awesome Hiyaaa! experience at the MVBL Feast in Saratoga a couple of weeks ago and can't wait for them to come back! Had the Spicy Pork Banh Mi - DELICIOUS! The pork was so tender, flavorful and had just the right amount of spiciness. They put lots and lots of meat and lots of pickled veggies in their sandwiches, just how I like it! In fact, my sandwich was so packed with goodies I could barely get my mouth around it.. You definitely get your money's worth with this food truck!

    Harriet W.

They came to SFSU campus and I was curious about them so I decided to give it a try. i got the little combo thing so it was a bit of everything. The curry was completely BLEH. It literally looked like mushy poo when I saw it, and I'm not over exaggerating. The rice under that was completely soggy and mush. i didn't think that anyone can mess up on rice. The chicken over the salad was okay, but nothing special. I did like the little mini sandwich with the bulgogi though. I might've left happier if i had just left with a single sandwich. for $9 for this pile of mess, no thanks. Never coming back to this food truck ever again.

We made our way to Millbrae and on to El Camino. We parked around the corner and were seated right away. It was a fairly busy Thursday night but we were glad we didnt have to wait. There was a rotating skewer-ready charcoal grill at each table and we ordered a variety of food. We ordered garlic oysters in the half-shell ($10.95). This was cooked in the kitchen and brought out. It was delicious. We ordered prawn skewers that were a big size and came one per skewer. We had Japanese wagyu ($25.95), prime beef ($6.95), pork jowl ($3.95), shitake mushroom ($2.95), chicken thigh ($2.95), pork sausage and marinated meat skewers. We enjoyed everything that came out. Service was great and attentive. It was pretty much one server for the entire restaurant so she was running around to all the tables... The meats were good and the ones that were pre-seasoned were good too. Otherwise the dipping sauces were tasty. They bring out the skewers little by little and you can place the cooked meats on this rack-like contraption that sits near the grill and eat them at your own pace. I really liked this concept. I would certainly go back again.

My husband and I had dinner here tonight, and overall it was a really memorable experience. We've…read moretraveled quite a bit and tried sushi in many different cities, including around the Los Angeles area where we live and have our favorite spots. So when we visit a sushi restaurant, we tend to evaluate everything as a whole -- price, quality, service, and of course the flavors. For dinner we ordered the Mango Tuna Roll (which was our first time trying a mango-style sushi roll), the 8-piece Omakase Nigiri, a Double Toro Roll, two pieces of Otoro, and a hot sake. With a 20% tip included, the total for the two of us came to $163.50, which honestly falls within the average range of what we usually spend for a sushi dinner like this. Normally we might pay around $120-$130 depending on the place, sometimes a little more if we add an extra item or two. The portion sizes were pretty standard. Not unusually large, but not small either -- similar to what we've experienced at many other sushi restaurants. Where this place really stood out was the depth of flavor. The quality and balance of the ingredients were excellent. At one point I actually caught myself closing my eyes just to focus on the taste, which is something I almost never do. The preparation felt very refined and the flavors were elevated, rich, and memorable. I would describe it as delicate portions with very elevated flavors. Because of that, I'm giving this place 5 out of 5 stars. This is the kind of restaurant that works perfectly for a nice dinner with your partner. It's not necessarily a place where you go wild ordering everything on the menu like at a taco spot. Instead, it's better to be thoughtful with what you choose and enjoy a few well-crafted dishes. You can easily have a special, enjoyable dinner here without going overboard. Definitely worth visiting if you're in the area and want a quality sushi experience with refined flavors. The only thing I felt was missing was a small welcome miso soup. In some sushi restaurants we've visited, they serve a tiny cup of miso with a couple pieces of tofu as a warm welcome. It's a very small gesture, but it creates a nice first impression and adds a sense of hospitality to the experience. Considering the quality and pricing of the menu here, a simple welcome miso soup would fit perfectly with the overall dining experience.

Everything from the chef had a simple description for what it was. My faves for the meal were the scallop sashimi, the chiwan mushi, the yakimono, king salmon, and med fatty tuna. The scallops were flavorful, and just melted. Probably the best bite that I had. The cuts of fish were great. I liked how simple the chiwan mushi was. Definitely was great with the cold weather. The yakimono the butter wasn't overpowering and was well balanced with the ingredients. There was also a fried appetizer that was good but the name of it escapes me. Certainly worth the price tho if I had more people with me, I would definitely get reservations.

We also noted that it was the first time we've had something like this that had enough wontons on the side. Normally you always run out. Not here. The sushi was good but very small for the price. The last thing we ordered was pasta with foraged mushrooms. This was our least favorite. Was expecting a creamy earthy pasta with the mushrooms but the mushrooms almost seemed pickled. There was a very vinegary taste from the mushrooms that was off putting. The pasta was also very very al dente. Way too undercooked for us. Lastly this place can be a little pricey. Yes you're in the SF Bay Area and you're paying for convenience but to me pricey for what you get. Location and views are great and the staff is super friendly
