I've been here before and this visit was a step down. I picked up a spam musubi and a macaroni salad, both affordable at $3.79 each, but the savings aren't worth it if the food doesn't deliver. The spam musubi was overly salty and the sauce they used overpowered everything else. The macaroni salad had too much mayo and was borderline inedible. Two simple things, two misses. Loco moco (3/5) Garlic shrimp (2/5) - with a half order, you only get 6 pieces of shrimp. The shrimp are on the smaller side, and were a little dry. Not too much flavor and a little bland. Solely based on a take-out order on my first visit. Hana popped up on my radar because it was just a few minutes away from the hotel I stayed at. It's located on San Mateo Ave., a quaint little downtown area in the city of San Bruno. I went there around 4pm so it was empty. I was greeted right away by a nice lady. The menu was fairly big with many plate lunch options and combos. I skipped lunch so I was quite hungry and got one of their most popular items: #1 Combo (according to her) It comes with short rib, beef and chicken on rice and mac salad. I also got a Portuguese sausage musubi. Not sure why I did that because the combo was huge. The chicken could've used more flavor but everything else was very good. I was only able to eat 1/2 and saved the rest for breakfast the next day. The interior felt very spacious. There were many tables and a high ceiling. At the counter, there were boxes of Hawaiian cookies that I tried during my very first time in Hawaii, and very first time in an ABC Store. For a brief moment during my work trip, I was transported back to Hawaii. Note: what looks like free street parking is actually paid parking. I was really excited to try the loco moco here since it's not one of the big Hawaiian BBQ chains and had a lot of good reviews. Parking was super convenient with street spots and a lot right behind the laundromat. There's indoor seating, but it feels more like a fast food joint--one of those spots where you go in, get your grub on, and head out quick. The staff at the counter was great and handled a steady flow of dine-in and online orders with ease. The loco moco was listed at $13.25, which seemed fair at first, but I didn't know about the $2 egg surcharge (1 dollar for each egg). After tax, it came out to just under $17, which felt a bit steep for loco moco in the Bay Area. Still, I was hopeful and ready to dig in. They give you a generous portion of rice, and the egg was cooked perfectly over easy, just how I like it. The macaroni salad was also really solid. It was a thin, uniform, mass-produced patty that lacked the flavor and texture of a freshly made one. It didn't have that seared crust or juicy interior you'd hope for in a good loco moco. The egg was actually larger than the patty, which made the whole dish feel a bit off balance. Overall, the loco moco here didn't live up to the hype for me. Maybe the katsu or other fried items are better, and I'd be open to giving those a try. But for loco moco specifically, I'd say it's a pass. read more

One of the best Hawaiian spots I've been to in the Bay! I was excited to see lau lau and kalua pork on the menu, since you don't always see that in mainland Hawaiian spots. Been past this spot so many times and mad at my self for getting Panera when this gem was next door. Too hungry for photos but I got a regular number 12 which was white rice , Cole slaw, macaroni salad, and the short ribs. The sides were pretty basic but the short ribs were the star of the show flavorful and tender. A literal mountain of food at affordable prices! The dish to get here is the "Half & Half" plate, which comes with two proteins, two sides, a small portion of greens, and a dipping sauce. I tried the chicken katsu & BBQ chicken. The former was crispy and lightly battened, while not being overly greasy. The chicken was also very moist. The BBQ chicken was just ok, a bit tougher than I would like, but still not bad. Again, the game here is the exceptional value. You also get rice & mac salad for $15 total. YAY a new Hawaiian BBQ place!! WHOO HOO... am so EXCITED. It's a bit far for me but definitely on the way to SF or close to my kids so I see opportunities for going there.... Was visiting my dad in SF so stopped over here on the way and I'm so glad we did. I called in my order first and the lady taking the order was nice and efficient - we worked out the pick up time as she could have it ready in 10 mins but it would take me 30 mins to get there - so she made sure it was all ready at the time we stated! She was super nice and friendly when we came for pick up as well. What an easy process. Wanted to REALLY try their garlic shrimp - that's so hard to find at most local Hawaiian BBQ places so this was an absolute must. SO MUCH flavor, tons of garlic and shrimp cooked PERFECTLY. But first I have to say - their mac salad was very tasty! Luckily I got that as a side in all my plates cause my dad devoured it and loved the mac salad - really added the extra to the whole meal!! We wanted to try a bunch of other proteins so we got a Regular Half and Half with beef ribs and lau lau. Now I will say the lau lau while it had great flavor was a bit dry - typically I love it when it's moist and has a bit of fat in the pork but this was all lean and a bit dry. BUT the leaf was tasty and definitely flavor wise was good. BUT the beef ribs - YES! It was PERFECT and tender and so much flavor! AND not overly salty. Some places it's a bit salty for me which is why you have to eat it with rice. This was a great bit without rice - but even better with the mac salad! :) And the last combo we got was the chicken katsu and fried Basa - this is the only one we added the rice and mac salad to. Fam has been cutting back on rice so there was MORE than enough rice for us to all share... FIRST let me share - for those of you who used to go to J&Js in Cupertino - their chicken katsu sauce was AMAZING - on the sweeter side and I so MISSED not having that anymore. NO MISSING ANYMORE cause Hana's chicken katsu is even better than J&Js. The sauce seems to be the same but their chicken katsu is even BETTER... thicker and juicy with that perfect crunch on the outside!! I'm SO HAPPY!! Oh and their fried Basa was meaty and tasty as well. I will say - for fried items it's probably best to eat right away - as the fried Basa was a bit softer by the time we brought it to my dads but the thickness of the basa and taste were definitely spot on!! You get accustomed and overlook the visuals of a store and focus on the food(as long as I don't see any creatures crawling around). It was very tender and flavorful. My husband got chicken katsu. The breading was a bit thicker than we'd prefer, but still good. We got the regular size for both entrees and had enough food to save for leftovers, which we always appreciate.
