What an enjoyable dining experience. We met relatives from Texas who were staying in Niles, and wanted to have Chinese food for dinner. We had never been there so we thought we would give it a try. We each had different items on the menu. One had a seaweed salad , and soup. One had scallops and shrimp in garlic sauce. One had coconut shrimp which was delicious and I had empress chicken. Very flavorful sauce and crunchy vegetable. They even had a nice Italian wine! (Which is my favorite) We all agreed that everything tasted great and we plan to return soon. The food was pretty bland for Chinese huge portions for what you pay though which is great. Our waitress Lena was great up until Tip Time, when she told us your tipping me $2 for 3 people?! And then proceeded to walk away and say very unpleasant things in Chinese just because were American and speak English as our primary language doesn't mean were not bilingual! It was me and my boyfriend and my 5 year old son. It was a $47 bill he made it an even $50. This is our favorite go to great Chinese restaurant! I love the hit and sour soup and that they can make low mein spicier. Other great options are happy family, all their sushi, wonton soup - actually we have yet to find something we don't like here. Nice casual atmosphere. Good service. Had teriyaki beef and sizzling crispy rice soup appetizers. Both were excellent. Got 3 specialty rolls... 1 was great, 1 ok, 1 not so good. Since they opened, this has become my FAVORITE Chinese restaurant. The place is always immaculate, the staff are wonderful and attentive, and the food is amazing! I've tried several things from the menu and all but one were outstanding (I thought the General Tso's Shrimp was kinda gross). The Orange Chicken is wonderful and you can taste the orange. The pot stickers are also the best that I've ever had. It's a little hard to find, being tucked in the back corner or a strip mall, but it is so worth the effort to find. Dined at Ho Ping Garden last night with my husband and our 2 year old. The restaurant is very modern and clean. our daughter loved the little fish pond in the front of the restaurant. Our server was polite and prompt. We ordered Philadelphia rolls and egg drop soup for appetizers, and we split sweet and sour chicken with fried noodles (pork/shrimp/beef). Everything was delicious and the portions were huge. They do have a a wine/beer/spirits menu which is a nice touch since most chinese restaurants don't usually serve alcohol. I've had my last visit to Ho Ping Restaurant due to the owner allowing the servers to extort money from the customers. We had eaten there many times but never had the experience that we did recently. You know how some servers seem to have a bad attitude all through the meal, only to sweeten up when it's tip time? Well, that is the type of service Shirley gave us. We were dining with another couple and we all commented on her abrupt demeanor when we asked for simple things...like a straw. She roughly threw 5-6 of straws down on the table, there were only 4 of us eating...we knew we were in for bad service. You know the attitude I'm talking about...like she doesn't want to be there and really doesn't want you to be there either? When tip time came, the other couple left over 20%, we left 10%. We don't believe in rewarding poor service and we tip accordingly. Shirley had the nerve to confront us on our tip, saying we must have made a mistake, offering my husband the receipt and a pen asking if he was sure that he wanted to leave the amount he did. Over and over she kept pointing at the tip amount on the receipt asking if he wanted to change it, if he made a mistake! This was incredibly ridiculous and such a rude way for a server to behave. Her behavior was especially upsetting to all of us, even the other couple dining with us. They felt she was very inappropriate to confront us on our tip. Even though we didn't agree with a larger tip, we reluctantly left enough additional cash on the table to equal 20% of our bill...she seemed desperate for more money. Why else would someone confront a customer in such a manner? When we got in the car to leave, my husband was so bothered by this, he decided to go back in to the restaurant to speak with the owner. She didn't act very surprised and said she would "handle" Shirley later. He insisted on the owner speaking with Shirley in his presence, so that he could be sure it was being handled. He also noticed that the additional tip we left on the table had been already picked up. That was very quick, it was as if she expected that we would give in to her tactics and leave more money! The owner and Shirley began speaking in their language, so my husband didn't know what was said, but at one point while he was speaking to the owner, Shirley stuck her tongue out at him! This was witnessed by another customer who was shocked by her behavior, and she confirmed it with the owner right then and there. However, it seemed that nothing was going to be done about it. Luckily my husband handled this problem, he is very calm natured...if it would have been me, I might have grabbed that awful girl and demanded our entire tip to be returned to us! All four of us have agreed to stop eating at Ho Ping, the food is ok, but it's not that special...and not worth the server's games of extortion being allowed by the owner. There are just too many other restaurants to dine at....we'll spend our money elsewhere....and you should too. I see that there is another similar review of this restaurant where customers were forced into leaving a tip the way the server wanted them to...keep reading, you'll see it. Overall, a poor way to run a restaurant, and a good way to lose good customers. Shame on you Shirley, and the owner's of Ho Ping. read more
