I had ham fried rice and shrimp egg foo young. It had no taste. None of it. What I did eat sat like a brick in my stomach until well after noon the next day. I threw 2 patties and the rice away. My parents had the Happy Family and Shrimp fried rice. They threw theirs away and my sister had multiple items and complained about all of it. We wanted to try something new. Went for Mother's Day and had an excellent experience. Long-time customer here and highly recommend. Great food, large portions but seems fair. General Tso's chicken was my choice, with fried rice and pot sticker appetizer for the table. Service was great, it wasn't overly busy though. The service is perfunctory at best. Our server was hurried and forgot an item. The food is mediocre. I love duck so I ordered the 8 Pearl Duck. I've had better take out. The duck was all fat and skin. Disgusting would be a compliment. It was offensive. The Szechuan Green Beans were just a limp mess with some sweet, bottled barbecue sauce. The Pork Dumplings were not fresh but had sweltered under a heat lamp. We were greeted with a piece of gristle and bone in one of them. Ycccch! It was a little dated, but still looked nice. Our service was great. Very attentive. Our food was delicious. Food, service, ambiance! In this day when many Oriental Restaurants are closed, Ho Wah is still great! Have visited several times in the last few months, most recently with my grandson. He loved it! Have tried dishes for the first time and was never disappointed. Appetizers we enjoyed were Egg Rolls and Crab Rangoon. Both perfectly crispy and tasty. Our entrees were Mi Fun with shrimp, Thai Basil Chicken and Ho Wah Szchewan. All delightful, with emphasis on FUL. Servings were plentiful, as we took half home. This restaurant still serves their dishes in the traditional silver bowls, as well as the teapots. Cloth tablecloths and napkins. Excellent waiter, whom we recognized from other places over the years. Again, the restaurant seemed short sraffed but our guy did a great job serving. Ho Wah will be our new go to place. Just picked up a to go order and received horrible service. I've been a customer for well over 20-30 years with no complaints. Assuming there's new management but I walked in and the manager, Micheal, refused to even acknowledge me. Then when I asked if I could be helped he said "well you're on the phone". Not illegal and no signs stating you're not allowed to use the phone. Then he refused to even give me my credit card receipt said "you don't need to sign". I've worked in the service industry before and always tip...even on to go food. I thanked him for preventing his staff from getting a tip. I never leave reviews but could not pass up the opportunity to express the disappointment with such rude service from someone who calls themselves a manager. I liked the quiet, dim, more formal setting of this place. It's on the lower level of this strip of restaurants in Beachwood with dedicated parking but when it's busy, it can be hard to find a spot. Presentation of the dishes were good and taste of the dishes were great! I got the hot mandarin duck and chicken lettuce wraps and both were excellent. Prices were a bit high but the portions were reasonable so I always appreciate that. Service was quick and they automatically serve you hot tea, which is cute. We had a really nice large round table for all of us. It was perfect to be able to see and talk with everyone versus a long rectangle table. Some of us shared dishes and some wanted their own. I split a chicken egg roll, lemon chicken and sesame beef. We also had this with fried rice. Others had pad Thai, won ton soup, hot and sour soup, kung pao chicken, and governor tso's chicken. I don't understand how this restaurant is in business. We attended a birthday dinner here, and EVERYONE left irritated and hungry. The waiter was the most rude I've ever encountered anywhere. I ordered chicken egg roll and he repeated back to me that I wanted a chicken egg roll. We told him "no, chicken". His response was "no, vegetable." How do you tell the customer what she's going to eat??? And it wasn't because they were out of chicken egg rolls or something, because everyone else that ordered chicken egg rolls at the table after me received chicken, and he actually gave me a vegetable egg roll! The server was snappy and rude constantly. When trying to order he wanted us to hurry up and order. There's no reason to be that rude to guests who were nothing less than polite and respectful to the staff and other guests. We expected that a large party would have an automatic gratuity added, but when he swiped our cards he wrote in the tip amount for us. Excuse me? That's not how you do an automatic gratuity. He told us to "just sign it." The food was awful. I wouldn't even rate it as mediocre. There were no spices added. The dishes that were supposed to be spicy were bland. It was an all around awful experience. The dungeon atmosphere wasn't very appealing. It felt like we were in a basement. The Kung, pow dishes, pepper, steak, egg foo yong, and appetizers, all are wonderful if Cantonese Chinese food is your favorite. My mom ordered a dish and hers came with broccoli, so if you want any type of vegetables make sure it comes with your meal. The food is always good, fresh and hot. Horrid experience!!! About a month ago, Alice and Patti went to Ho Wah for dinner. Our fsmily had eaten there for several generations. The waitress was rude, the service was rushed, and the food was bland. Alice and Patti left a tip despite the poor service and food. The waitress asked them if that was all they were leaving her as it wasn't much. Then the manager followed Alice and Patti out, yelling at them. We tried this place, figuring if it has been around since 1979 it must be doing something right. It is a very nice place, clean, and inviting. The one thing we noticed right away though was it was about ten degrees warmer inside the restaurant than in the mall. We were seated in the very back of the place, and it was stiffeling hot back there. When the food came, my wife had ordered Chop Suey and I had ordered Beef pepper steak. Both of the sauces were GREY and had no flavor. We were with a group of 7, and asked if we could have separate checks, NO was the answer as it is too hard for the people up front we were told. When the soup came, we were also brought a small bowl of FIVE shrimp chips for 7 people. Really... how is that supposed to work? Most Chinese restaurants bring a large bowl or multiple bowls for a table with several people. We will go elsewhere next time. Not a good experience. read more
