Had been here once long ago and enjoyed the food - tried it again recently and will never return - not sure what happened here but the fact that they had no other dine in customers when we arrived should have been a clue - both got won ton soup which was good but not very hot and it was served with fried chow mein type noodles .. not shrimp puffs like we would have preferred .. both dishes came with fried rice that was tasteless .. as well as the entree's themselves .. just nothing special and therefore no reason I would think we would have to ever return .. the huge pictures of other dishes on the wall are also a bit of a decorative turn off read more

Disclaimer: Disregard my 2018 review... I used to love this restaurant... Now they have changed owners and use MSG. My favorite Chinese restaurant is now on the no go list due to a severe allergy. So if you are MSG sensitive do not think about visiting. Such a shame that establishments feel the need to use MSG. read more

When Richmond Mall was in decline, and then closed, and then the Pandemic hit, a lot of stores in that neighborhood also closed or barely hung on. That included a once thriving Chinese restaurant on Richmond Road right across of the Mall, Hunan East. Since 2020, it was limited to take out only. Hunan East is back as a full service restaurant for the first time since the beginning of the Pandemic! It has new very experienced ownership, and the food is OUTSTANDING! If it's not on the menu they will make it by request. For example, they made me the best Hot and Sour Soup I've ever had. Because I don't eat pork, they made steamed pot stickers stuffed with chicken and vegetables. On the menu, a first for us, Chicken with Chinese Egg Plant was delicious. First time trying this place after moving to the area and I was encouraged by the actual Chinese dishes listed alongside the American Chinese classics. This little place did not disappoint! We got an American Chinese dish and a more regular Chinese dish and both were excellent. Family Style Tofu didn't shy away from the spice and actually had fresh bamboo shoots! I had been here several years ago under different ownership. My asian parents invited us here for lunch where we had the opportunity to try 8 entrees family style. I have to say that each dish was prepared in authentic style. Everything was delicious. There was white steamed rice served which went well with the sauces that came with most of the dishes. We had the fish maw soup, kung pow chicken, spicey beef, deep fried pork cutlet strips, braised pork belly with vegetables, deep fried prawns, chinese broccoli, pork and tofu medallions,. For those familiar with chinese in NE Ohio, this was on par with my favorite Siam Cafe downtown. Would highly recommend. I would NOT call this restaurant Americanized Chinese although there are some dishes in that category on the menu. read more

Our first time to go for lunch here since they had a new owner. Everything was good. We had the seafood with fish maw soup, szechuan eggplant, yang cho fried rice, ma la jon pork chop, and salted bake shrimp. All very good and cooked to our satisfaction. Fresh and very palatable. The new owners have changed the menu, the egg foo young is not nearly as good, and the green beans with chicken Chinese style has changed as well, Those are 2 of the staples we ordered, both are now disappointing. Here's my gripe with Hunan East.. The food is average, at best. These recent 4 and 5 star reviews are fake! Trust me on that. The issue I have is when I use my debit card, the owners tell me that I must be charged a fee to use my card. They explain this to me EVERY TIME- that they get charged a fee, so they must charge me as a result. But isn't that the cost of owning a business?! The fee also depends on the amount of the order and these fees are never posted. They peek behind the counter and come up with some random number. So that random fee turns into their tip! we love the food and service, but we go less and less often than we would like due to certain customers conduct their business on their speaker phone or phone. they would be so noisy we can't even hear each other at our table, other customers shared the same concerns with us as they shook their heads in disapproval for that mannerism of those people. Under new ownership , I ordered to go 3 months ago and was EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED ! After 30 +yrs the old owners should have mentioned the sale of the restaurant to regulars . Hunan East HAD the best egg foo young and sweet and sour soup....now it is sub par, very bland and oily. I've NEVER written a negative review - my gripe is the sneaky way they sold and didn't have the courtesy to let loyal customers know. apparently, this restaurant is under new ownership, and the food is not even remotely in the same league as before. It was extremely bland and very greasy, the worst Americanized Chinese food we've had in some time. Egg soup had zero flavor and was reminiscent of dishwater. Eggplant undercooked, beef chewy, and no flavor to the chicken dish we got. I LOVE Hunan East!!! They are one of my favorite restaurants to eat at and it's great for dine in or takeout! I used to love this restaurant. They just recently re-opened for dine in(2 weeks ago). I got carryout this week and it was horrible. Street noodles were bland and hardly anything in it other than a couple shrimp and a couple pieces of pork. No black mushroom, onion, egg. Just mostly noodles. Oh and they put green peppers in (which have never been in there before). Guess they're going to the bottom of my list as emergency food only and maybe not even then. Giving five stars for the all around experience: exceptional food, staff and service. Two menus to peruse, an authentic Chinese menu or the easy American style, point at pictures type. Used to never be a fan of hot and sour soup until I tried it here. It's a steal for only $1.50 a bowl! Generous portions of bamboo shoot, tofu and pork make this soup chunky. It's also the generous portion of vinegar that makes my lower mouth start to salivate and keeps me coming back. For the low carb community, would recommend the mu shu, but specify without noodles. Nice blend of vegetables and meats, enormous portion, comes with a fried egg on top. Love the owner Mike who has always treated us like family, will sit down and talk with us and never shoo us away. I have been back here almost weekly since writing my last review. This will blow any place on the east side out of the water unless you like your Chinese food from a can. Side note: The authentic stuff is mostly Cantonese. I do not know anywhere with in 5 hour drive that you can find a robust Hunan or Schezwan menu. Just about anything from the Chinese picture menu is good. Had something called Pork Jaja Mein. Or something like that. It was on of the to 10 best things I have eaten. It was a huge bowl of Chinese lomein noodles smothered in a spicy, garlicky, gingery, sauce with pork, onions tofu, veggies and diced Chinese shrooms. Absolutely amazing. I was stuffed after about eating 1/3 of it. This is super munchie food. Other outstanding dishes: The shrimp or seafood in black bean sauce is to die for. Chicken or Beef with Chinese mushrooms. Beef and sour vegetables. Chicken in garlic sauce. Kung Bo Chicken Look at what others are eating and that is how I have discovered some really good finds. Or just ask me. Of the American Menu the chef's specialties are very good. The General's Chicken is very good, you can tell it's white meat chicken breast. Triple Delight As far as food goes this is some of the best Asian food east side. The ambiance, not so much. There is no liquor so drink before if you feel the urge. This is the best and most authentic Chinese food on the east side! We skipped the $6.95 lunch special (which includes tea, rice and egg rolls) and ordered from the regular menu (but got complimentary tea and rice anyway but declined the egg rolls). Portions are enormous, so plan to share or take extras home. The hot and sour soup was tasty and tangy, a far cry from the gelatinous corn starch concoctions usually seen in Americanized Chinese restaurants. We had mushu chicken, a Chinese comfort food of sorts, which came with plum sauce and wrappers, as well as an enormous platter of tasty filling with a scrambled egg cap to be mixed in. (Note, I was offered the "English menu or Chinese menu" version and naturally chose the Chinese one, which apparently contains more exotic ingredients than the other version, including bamboo shoots (not just the canned rectangular ones) and black woodear fungus.). We also had the shrimp, scallop, and squid in black bean sauce. All the seafood was breaded and fried, then mixed with the sauce, but the scallops and shrimp in particular were generous in size and perfectly cooked. Service is prompt and friendly without being pushy. The seating area is much cleaner and more welcoming than many other downtown Asian restaurants. We normally go to the Chinatown area for Chinese food, but every time I come here, I wonder why we don't go more often. I'll have to remedy that! Family style tables (like in Dim Sum restaurants) with smaller booths, this place feels comforting right when you take your seat. When I enter the restaurant, I am always greeted and seated right away (when it is not too busy) and the wait staff is quick to ask you for your preferred beverage. I've been here a couple times so far and I have not have one bad item! Everything I tried so far is delicious and sometimes I end up ordering the same thing. That should prove how good the food is. The sweet and sour spare ribs is a must order and will definitely fill you up and also your party members'. How grateful I am to have this spectacular food close to my house. When I first moved into my neighborhood I heard that this was one of the best restaurants, and even so, I don't think it gets enough credit! A Chinese restaurant with a strange combination: a Shanghainese owner with his Cantonese wife, with a name that emphasizes spicy Hunan cuisine and a menu with fusion Chinese food. Ordered from this restaurant right before closing on Saturday January 7th. I have been to many Chinese restaurants, but this one, I will never return. I ordered the pork egg foo young with fried rice and egg rolls. When my friend returned home with my order, immediately the Chinese food had a strong fishy/seafood odor! I know each restaurant may prepare their dishes their own particular way, but I have never in my life had egg foo young the way this restaurant prepares it--there were two big puffed, dried out patties with huge pieces of tough, inedible pork! There was no evidence that this egg foo young had any egg in it. When I tried to cut into it (it was tough), it was nothing but a mound of onion and pork dipped into a batter and deep fried. The fried rice was just that--plain, fried rice--no onions , bean sprout, peas, carrots, or eggs. Last, the egg roll filling had a mushy texture like it was overcooked . Excellent authentic Chinese menu choices, large portions, and ran by the coolest Chinese business owner this side of Shanghai! I've been coming here for years. It's the place I think of when your friends say, "let's order Chinese food!" They have an excellent Lobster seafood pot and it's one of the only places I can get pan fried noodles. Their black bean shrimp is as good as it gets and the Mongolian beef is as tender as a virgin Buddhist monks ass.
