I came to the Hoagie Shop in Apollo after a number of people told me how good it was. I stopped in before working the Leechburg Graduation and the Hoagie Shop was only about 10 minutes away. It sits between houses in a neighborhood in North Apollo. I walked in to about 6 customers waiting for hoagies and two workers making the sandwiches. I was asked if I called ahead, which I had not. I waited for about 10 minutes to get through the orders and to my turn. There are two sizes, small and large. Small hoagies were in the $4 range. Large hoagies were in the $5 range. I ended up going with a large regular. It was like an Italian Hoagie. It ran me $5.45. The hoagie was fine, but was more like something you would buy from a kid as a fundraiser. I have no clue why this sandwich shop is so highly rated. I have had thousands of subs- and this shop is no way near four star food. I'm guessing no one knows a good sub when they taste one. The Italian is the worst I have ever had, and Subway blows this place out of the water. Sad- because I am a firm believer in supporting your community. read more

My first time going here and staff was extremely rude because we didn't know you had to call ahead and that it was cash only establishment. Finally got our food and it was soggy and the turkey tasted weird. Would not recommend. read more

Oh man this little shop has been around for ages, since I was a kid. I used to wonder why we went here instead of the more famous chain, Subway. I think the options here feel more home made compared to a corporate company. When you're little, they let you sample the cheese. I don't know if they do this anymore lol. I'm sure its changed over the past decade or two. The staff is usually rather quick. Some are nice, some are pieces of disgusting moldy tuna :) They might get annoyed if you want too little or too much of something like, listen lady. I eat what I like. One thing that gets me a little annoyed is that they use the same knife for everything. So if one person orders a hoagie with mayo and lettuce, and another person orders a hoagie with just ham and cheese, they will use the same knife. And sometimes the plain hoagie gets contaminated with the previous order's mayo or whatever else. Can they clean the knives in between orders? Especially if people have allergies, you're going to end up mixing little bits into other hoagies. read more

I wish I could give zero stars... First off, they don't accept credit or debit cards, and are cash-only. They do not display this in the building anywhere, and when asked why they said they don't like to advertise it. So I sat there for 10 minutes while they made my hoagies (incorrectly), while I could have been driving to an ATM to get cash had they let me know that. Second, they don't even own an oven. Most people like their subs toasted. Third, the order was completely wrong. I asked for no dressing and got dressing, I asked for pickle and mayo and didn't get pickle or mayo. There was only a total of maybe one slice of cheese on the entire 12 inch hoagie. Seriously, don't waste your time. They are incompetent and I will never ever be back. I will also spread the word of their terrible business practices. read more

First we wait five minutes while clerk one makes call in orders, and the other makes egg salad. I then get waited on, while girl one makes ANOTHER three call in hoagies, customers 3 is waiting behind both of us, customer number 4 walks in while I walk out... Half the staff is screwing around on call ins, the other has no clue who is next. Don't they understand walk ins should come first? 15 minutes to get two COLD subs. one word. SUBWAY. I am such a fan of this little shop, ESPECIALLY their tuna fish hoagies. There's an additional extra flavor (maybe pickle juice?) that makes them my favorite. It's a no-frills establishment, but they do put up nice sandwiches. Their roast beef they drizzle with a little balsamic. Not really a place to sit & eat, better to grab a bag of chips & a pop & sit elsewhere. read more

New owners. Promised things wouldn't change. They did. Not only are they stingy on the meat, there is pretty much no flavor. I don't think they even put oil on it. The hoagie was also put together in a half assed mess. And every time I call I tell them cut in half, wrapped separately since I am usually eating these in the go. This used to be one of our favorite spots to grab a quick bite to eat. The prices are reasonable even at cash only. However, there are times we have been there and had to actually leave because we were not waited on. When you enter the hoagie shop the employees ask each person coming in the door if they "called in an order?" If the person said yes they either get their order out of a refrigerator or they start making them. This leaves everyone else waiting and not getting served. I waited one evening about 20 minutes realizing that I could possibly never get to put my order in. I was tempted to call as I stood there to "call in my order", just to get a hoagie. I did complain about this practice, but apparently they still follow this rule. With that being said, if you would like your hoagie make sure you call in your order! read more

I feel bad about giving this company such a low star rating but I feel I'm forced to. They have wonderful ham subs, with seasoning that's great. In recent years it appears that the owner has decided to cut some corners, sometimes the bread isn't so fresh (i.e. a little on the hard side, I remember my jaw being sore after eating a sub.), and they've decreased the size of their subs from bigger than subway to smaller than subway for a large. I actually think that two smalls are the size a large used to be, but a large is more like a small and 1/3rd if that makes any sense. Great subs, I still go there, but I'd like to see the bigger subs back again, even if they have to raise prices a little. read more

If you're from the Apollo area, then you know the Hoagie Shop. Their menu hasn't changed as far back as I can remember and is simple. They make hoagies. A few different types all with fresh ingredients and buns. Their prices are very reasonable. Best bang for the buck for lunch. The place can get VERY BUSY especially at lunch and dinner times. I usually visit once a week, calling ahead and usually after the lunch crowd. I order a few hoagies and refrigerate them for lunches throughout the week. They hold up very well this way for up to a week. read more

I remember when the Hoagie Shop first opened up in the 60's while I was going to Apollo High School. They made great hoagies then and they make great hoagies now. This is a must stop when ever we are up visiting from Maryland. It's a tradition! read more

The very cheapest lunch meat, one tiny thin slice of tomato and see through onion slices, technique and ingredients, people! I ordered 3 hoagies tuna . I called in at 515 for pick up at 630. I got there at 630 exactly. The sandwiches where not made and waited 30 minutes for my order. Because the 3 girls where complaining about working. They didn't say sorry about your order.. and seemed very distracted or drunk. read more

This place is awful. I heard so many great things about it so I went. The menu is small and basic. All of the hoagies are cold. The lunch meat was very wet. The topping choices were also very basic. I took one bite and threw it away. So disappointing after growing up on Miller's Hoagies. I had to wait forever to order so they could take phone calls. If you want a CHEAP hoagie, then go here. And I don't mean cheap as in a good value, I mean, cheap as in four slices of lunch meat, cut as thin as a slicer can cut them, and if they pull five out, they count four, and put the fifth away. The Italian hoagie ISN'T an italian, its mostly jumbo, and the single slice of salami, is cut in half, as are the tomatoes, you dont get enough tomatoes to go a across the sandwich, you get one slice, cut in half, as is the cheese, one slice, cut in half for an entire hoagie. Also, its main ingredient is shredded lettuce, and if you aren't proactive, they WILL dump vegetable oil and nasty dry Italian seasoning all over the hoagie. Too cheap to just give you a packet of Italian dressing I guess. The Tuna hoagie is OK, but you better get there by 11 am, because they only make one batch of it per day, so, if you want to eat lunch at a normal hour, there is never any tuna left. read more

Pretty good, basic cold-cut hoagie. Bread is best part. Call ahead to order, otherwise it is uncomfortable wait in a very small space. Chef salads are also pretty good. Anything else is hit or miss. People go crazy for their tuna, but I don't think it is anything special. Overall, an ok cold cut hoagie place. Give it a try if you are in Apollo, it is definitely a local favorite! read more

Good hoagies, especially fir the price. Simple menu. Call in your order ahead if u dont want to wait. Also cash only which this day n age is very frustrating. I actually would go there more but dont feel like stoping at the atm everytime then dealing with change. read more
