I'm not quite sure why I've never been in HobbyTown, but I was in the neighborhood and had some time between obligations. So, I stopped in to check it out. HobbyTown is located in the long strip center adjacent to the former Weekends Only (and soon to be Vasa Fitness). It's definitely not the most active strip center, however, it seems like a good location for this type of business. HobbyTown is a franchised retail toy/hobby store with over 100 locations nationwide including three in Indiana (Granger and Evansville also have one). It's based in Nebraska. HobbyTown has a bit of a retro vibe, craft store meets hardware store meets toys like RC vehicles, RC aircraft, models, toys, games, learning toys, arts and crafts, and trains. I would probably describe myself as a wannabe hobbyist. I found myself completely captivated by the trains, RC options, and some of the models. I loved models as a kid - I was lousy at putting them together, but I really enjoyed it. They also had more board games than I expected. Parking here is pretty easy. It's not the most accessible building, however, it's not far from Concentra with a great curb cut. The store itself was pretty easy to get around, though aisles are occasionally a bit crowded. I had no difficulty and found the place friendly and helpful. The prices are pretty consistent with other hobby/toy shops. Yes, you can spend a lot here. For sure. You can also find affordable hobby options and gift options. A five-star might be a tad generous, however, I really liked the place and loved the variety of toys and hobbies. I used to go here for model train items but for about the last 8 months the shelves are nearly bare. I asked an employee what was going on with the lack of restocking and he said they just can't get things since Christmas. They didn't restock before that (not just train items out of stock) so that doesn't make sense to me. The older men that work there are not very friendly at all. If you ask them something about anything they act like you're stupid if you didn't already know. They are just rude old grouchy men. So because of those issues I'm done going there. It is too bad because at one time it was a great place to go. I guess I will buy more online and look my questions up there as well. I wonder if they are getting ready to close? read more

Horrible evil place. Too many Gunpla to choose from... you go in for one and leave with two. Evil satanic tabletop games that rely on dice rolls to play litter a good chunk of the store. Something called War Hammer with models and tiny figures... looks evil At the back there are a lot of cars in pieces that you're supposed to put together... what am I ? An RC kit fanatic. You don't go to a dealership to put a car together! Why would you want to build a custom car... those little tiny gas engines... Also what's with the trains? Why do I have an urge to buy a lot of tracks and standard gauge trains? My basements not big enough for this... Why are people smiling and acting all happy in there? They're possessed by the hobby demons I tell you If you value your money more than having fun and learning a new hobby, avoid this place. The extremely nice people working there will suck you in and you'll end up buying things you didn't know existed. My head kind of exploded in Hobbytown..I didn't even know this store existed until I was looking up airbrushes and model paint supplies online. I found exactly what I was looking for and also found a Hello Kitty x Gundam that I can't wait to put together. They seem to have a little bit of everything; board games, RC cars, boats, model building/painting supplies, model train stuff and of course an a-ok selection of Gundams. I'll definitely be returning to get some more supplies and maybe snag another Gundam or two. read more

They didn't have what I wanted in stock but pointed me to a good substitute and put in a special order. It came in long before promised. Q always has a good spirit and tries to save me money. I go here for Gundam models on a mildly regular basis. They don't always have the widest selection, but they do always have a few options for each grade. They normally have at least 1 Perfect Grade, two master grades, two-three real grades, and two-three high grades. I like real grade and perfect grade the most, but they always have something for everyone. My friend goes there for his RC car parts and he says they normally have pretty good parts for frames, but not the widest selection on electronics. read more

What a strange attitude these guys have. I tried to buy an RC Blade Nano S2 Helicopter, from the Indianapolis Hobbytown store. I wanted the package without the transmitter, the Bind and Fly version, but was told that they didn't have one. That is fair enough, but I was also told that such a thing is not available. I had just looked at one, on line, a few minutes before, from a different supplier, so I knew this was not true. The customer, in line behind me, told me that the store could order one for me, and that I would get 10% off. The guy behind the counter, didn't appear to like this very much, and wasn't very interested in ordering one for me, so I left, and purchased it direct from Horizon Hobby, without the attitude. This place will have most of your hobby needs, depending on the hobby, of course. Walking in, you feel a bit like you're in a tool store. It's kind of like an Ace Hardware, only completely different product. You know how you walk into Ace, and things seem a bit foreign? This is pretty much the same way. I drove over an hour to this store because they stock model kits and tools and accessories that aren't available to me locally. When checking out I asked about a gundam x hello kitty kit. They guy then proceeded to tell me they only got one kit in and hopes they don't get anymore because he hates that franchise and anyone that might be a fan. (Bro, who hurt you?) I'm at this point trying to just leave with my purchase and he's still rambling at me out the door about how only weird middle aged men would be fans of such a thing, and he only cares about the $200+ pg kits. I told him thanks and that we aren't that elitist in our thinking about the hobby. And left. I'll go back again because I don't really have a choice of a different store for some of the items carried. But if I have the choice to support them or save money you can bet I'll order online from another outlet. I'm not surprised at seeing another review complaining about being them behaving homophobic towards them after my what experience was like. One guy wouldn't bother getting off his phone until I asked him twice if I could look at something the other guy didn't know anything about the speed controllers I was trying to look for I told him flat out I was new to the hobby and nobody there was willing to offer any suggestions or really do anything to help make a sale. I received a coupon on October 19th to my email address offering me a $20 off coupon. I asked my fiancee to purchase a Spektrum AR7700 receiver from your store at 8326 Castleton Corner Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46250 on November 11th 5:00pm. I sent her the coupon from my email. First of all she was ignored by the two clerks who were talking to each other. When she went to pay for the purchase and presented the coupon she was interrogated about the validity of the "barcoded" coupon. Secondly she was told the coupon was only valid for 20% off when it clearly stated $20 off. There were 2 clerks one of them heavier he is the one who continued to interrogate her repeatedly for 5 minutes asking where she got the coupon? Checking the coupon bar code against some post-it note. She then had to call me and I had to provide my phone number to look up the record for the coupon before they agreed to accept it. She was very upset about the experience and felt as though she was attempting to commit fraud against your store. I know barcodes can be autonomous created for each email. Reducing fraud. The responsibility of fraudulent emails should not fall upon my girlfriend. We are African Americans and very sensitive about being treated differently. I am a regular customer at your store who was made to feel uncomfortable by continuing to patronize your business. This is unacceptable behavior and should not be tolerated. read more

My husband loves this store. He builds gundam models and this is the only place in Indy that carries them. They have a decent selection and they even get in new ones pretty often. They have a wide range of other models. We were also looking for a specific paint and they had that as well. I think some of the things they sell here are a little pricey. For the paint I would prefer to go to an art store with a larger variety. Also the people who work here are knowledgeable and helpful. read more

The prices range from uncompetitive to ridiculous. Aside from a few old timers, the customer service is apathetic. Their return policy is laughable. The experience that I had at Hobbytown in Castleton prompted me to join Yelp and write my first review. This is for an event that happened in September. I have always said that no business is perfect but it's how you try to resolve issues that marks a good business. I'm not going into details but I had a bit of an unpleasant experience with one of the employees over the purchase and attempt to return a toy boat I had bought for my son at Hobbytown and decided to email the owner about it. I did not expect a response back. I was pleasantly surprised that Bill, the owner, not only responded back but wanted to educate his staff about customer service and also offered to refund me for the toy boat. I did not return the boat as it functioned as it was supposed to but I had different expectations of it. It was generous of Bill to offer to refund me though. He was gracious in his comments and follow-up and I plan to return with my children again read more

First of all, I just want to say that I wish there were some great small independent hobby shops in the Indianapolis area, but I haven't found any that aren't a hole in the wall. I think it's sad that these types of shops are disappearing. On that note, this particular chain store is huge and should have something for nearly every hobby. They have a pretty large amount of HO and N scale train stuff, including locomotives, train cars, track and layout materials. The other location on the South side of Indianapolis lacks inventory, especially in the train department. read more

Most of the staff is the most curt, arrogant and unhelpful bunch I've come across in years. To be fair, a taller more seasoned gentlemen in the back was helpful and understanding during trip number two. But generally, do not expect help once they have your money. Due to inexperienced staff, our third trip to the store to finally make our new Traxxas Slash work was met with nothing but bad attitude and curtness by the service staff. When I complained to the cashier, he couldn't have cared any less. Looking at the owner's responses to many such concerns, it seems the owner's moto is that the customer is ALWAYS wrong. My advice, go to Amazon and avoid the rude attitudes. We are new to rc cars and will be enjoying the hobby with my young kids for years to come....however, I'll never spend another dime in this undeserving establishment. read more

This place kills me. On one hand they have pretty good prices, but then on the other hand they have the worst customer service of any store I have ever been to. The parts I needed were behind the counter, and the man who grabbed them for me was fine. Not enthusiastic or conversational, but not rude. I asked him if they match prices from their own website and he said (this is a direct quote): " I don't know man, I stay out of that stuff." No, man, you are the cashier, that is exactly your stuff. So I saw this was the only place in the area that sold Gundam model kits. I was visiting from California. I see that it has fair prices compared to back home. My dad, brother in law, 2 nephews & me drive there. We get there, the first person I talk to is very nice & tells me where to find the model kits. I'm there for about 10 minutes. Looking what to get, I meet other modelers there & we all have a swell time. I decide what to get. I get to the cashier & I notice he's a little quite but I did see that the customer service wasn't the best so whatever. When I'm leaving the store I get told by my dad & brother in law that same person basically told them they were gay. Saying in Spanish 'what are buying doing with those dolls' (they were buying a toy for my niece) 'are you guys switching to the other team or are you already there' 'oh & it's all pink' I myself don't have a problem with people being LGBT. I know in this state its legal for a Business to not help out individuals that are lgbt but at they same time I believe they have no right talking about our sexualities. I went to Hobbytown USA in Castleton looking to purchase a LGB or German made train set. I took my mother with me so she could see the different scales of trains. As we were causally looking at their lackluster train display, she touched one to see if it was made out of metal or plastic. An old codger yelled, "DON'T TOUCH THEM! DON'T TOUCH THEM!" My mother softly said, "I'm sorry", but you could tell this employee was clearly upset. My mother is a lady who isn't the type to break something, and besides, it's a train display. Do you really expect people not to touch them? They're for sale and customers want to inspect the merchandise. Their "display" was a bunch of cheap, Chinese junk which was about two seconds away from breaking anyway. G scale LGB and German made train sets aren't cheap. I was planning on spending a considerable amount of money at your store, but not anymore. I'm taking my money straight to the German manufactures and cutting your pathetic store and rude employees out of the supply chain. This store recently moved to a smaller location no doubt due to dwindling business. Soon, they will be out of business and the employees will be unemployed. Good riddance. read more
