Came to HobbyTown Toms River for Pokémon cards. There's a strict "one pack per person" rule -- unless, of course, you're a friend of the staff. I watched another customer get three packs no problem, but when I asked for the same, I was told the exception was only because they "knew him" and the cards were for his kids (that apparently doesn't matter if they are there or not) to quote what I heard a worker say one-time "doesn't matter if you bring your friends or family and they are there it's still limited to one per person." The next day? The rule was suddenly back in full force for everyone else. So if you enjoy selective policies and a little favoritism with your purchase, this is the place. Otherwise, don't expect fairness -- just a reminder that you're not part of the inner circle. read more

HobbyTown hosted the 2024 Gundam Base release. While they weren't responsible for organizing the event- I was able to explore the store. My partner and I both have alot of hobbies and HobbyTown had an amazing selection of items at great prices. I left with a few Gundam models and Pokemon cards with sets I haven't seen elsewhere. My partner is into dungeons and dragons as well as Warhammer and he left with books, models and a few new game sets. There's a good selection- you won't find everything you want but there's certainly some gems in here. The staff were lovely and helpful. I'd come back here next time I'm in the area. read more

Got a Christmas present from my son, that wasn't exactly what I would want. (He went rogue). Normally I would have just kept the present but was interested in a R/C car I've been eyeing for a bit. I brought the gift in with no receipt and asked if I could return it and purchase the car. The first employee said I would have to ask the manager, so I did. She was very accommodating when we spoke and said that as long as I was buying something else she would have no problem taking the gift back. I understood why it wasn't as simple as just returning the gift, because I had no receipt or any info for that matter. The R/C car i wanted was not in stock, the manager told me she could order it for me. Price was the same as if I ordered it online. No up charges or crazy fees. While she was ordering the car I got to hold her puppy, so you could easily say I was a pig in shit. Took a couple of days and when it arrived I was called immediately. When I got there to pick it up they allowed me to pop open the box to check it out before I left. They gave me some good tips on how to set it up, and suggested some accessories that I should look into for the future. Overall a very pleasant experience. When I asked questions, and they didn't have the answers, instead of making shit up to pretend like they are know it all snobs they took the time to research or consult with another employee to figure it out. Hobby town maybe a chain store but from what I understand they are all owned by individuals. I rather buy from a place where I can speak to someone, and not just a website. The staff made that decision easier for next time. Maybe it had to do partly with getting to hold the puppy but either way this is where I'm going to get my next R/C from. read more

Each month, my sons and I visit this amazing hobby store about 75 minutes away from where we live so we can race our little toy cars against the best of the best racers in the MidAtlantic region. We love the variety of hobbies and crafts the store offers as well the size of the store, which gives it the ability to hold huge racing contests that attract people of all ages, all to win bragging rights and some really cool prizes (more cars kits!). Now, we all know that Toys R Us is no more and that Amazon has basically replaced a lot of our shopping venues and habits. The malls are dead these days due to Amazon and COVID. Hobby stores are the new toy store and I think HobbyTown gets it... their store is basically a curated toy store. There are smart kid toys and board games, crafty things, trading cards, and unusual video games... and a big sections for R/C cars, model planes and ships, and lots more. The drive to the store isn't bad, so spend a sunny weekend day one day and check it out if you can! If you come out the second weekend of the month, you might even get to see me race my cars! read more

Bought an outcast 4s "2.5" back in April. had major electrical issues out of the box. Refused refund and we went down the waranty route. 2 weeks of back and forth and they agreed to swap it. They swapped it with an older unit. There are major ddifferences between them. I called them when I realized this and they told me I was making it up. So I called my credit card company and they quickly reversed the charge do to the bait and switch. Not they call me every couple weeks trying to get me to pay them and threaten legal action. Never go to this shop! There are other local shops that are amazing. read more

When I go into a store, I don't expect to be immediately surrounded by employees dying to help me, however, I do expect to be asked if I need assistance at some point. This has never been the case here. When I do need help, one thing I expect is for the employees to know their inventory, & how to use the products they sell. In the event they don't, in the very least, I expect a modicum of respect for the customer, & they ask someone who does, or look it up online. Not, a shrug & couldn't be less interested, "I don't know." Sorry for taking you away from your sandwich...that you were eating right on the counter. I guess you forgot about the pandemic. I only gave 2 stars for half-way decent products. My advice for the employees would be to find a new hobby, because working with the public isn't a good one for them. read more

I loaned them an object for display and hey were going to hang it. They left it on the floor and it "got broken". They had my contact information. It was also inside the object. Rather than offer it back so I could repair, they threw it out. The owner offered no compensation, just an oh well attitude. read more

Bought my kid a remote control boat and found an awesome selection from $35 to $1000 models. Walked around and it made me , (a dad in my very late 30s) feel like he was a kid again in the 80s/90s !! Cool crafts , toys , puzzles , electronics and nostalgia the likes of which ruled my childhood life . God bless the owners and all shops like this for keeping places like this afloat. I hope to raise my kid frequenting this store for special occasions and maybe to buy something cool for me too. I don't ever post a review but I've just been rubbed the wrong way. Horrible customer service overall. I don't expect to be bombarded with questions like a car salesman would, but I would like to be asked if I need help at some point. I have only been there a handful of times and honestly the only one useful there is Brian. He is pleasant to talk to, and knows his stuff. As far as I'm concerned everyone else is useless because they either do not know any products or just straight up rude. The rest of the employees should take notes from Brian and get training from him. And no, I'm not a family member of his or know him at all. read more

Avoid doing business with this vendor at all costs, in February I purchased a Tamaya Bruiser kit which was missing pieces... I called the store and spoke to a Woman who said she couldn't do anything for me because the kit has been out of production for eight years. I called American Express and submitted a dispute for a damage product and was credited back my money. One month later I receive a phone call and an email from someone named Lou asking why I was "dissatisfied" with the product, clearly an indication that the contents of the dispute weren't even considered... I wasn't dissatisfied I received an incomplete damaged product. Today over two months later I received a phone call from the Toms River Police Department stating that Lou the owner of the store is claiming that I committed fraud. This is surely not the way to recover a customers experience... accusing someone of committing fraud because your store carries products that are not as they are described, and missing pieces vital to the essential functionality of the product is a Gestapo tactic unlike anything I have ever seen in my entire life. The kit was thrown in the garbage at the end of February when it was first rendered useless, now two months later I'm being harassed by a New Jersey police department and business owner for exercising my rights as an American Express card customer... buyer beware and stay away. read more

I just moved to the area from Maryland and I purchased a new R/C truck from them I had a problem with charging it from manufacturer the next day I returned to the store and Brian helped me. He was so professional and knowledgeable about these things. He to the time and made sure that my charger was working just like it should. Stopping in while traveling thru the state (done live in area of store). Staff spent time to answer questions and provide me with a solution that made sense and was not expensive. No pressure to buy.
