First time eating at HoBo's today and wow I got the regular ruben and when I unwrapped it the smell of the fresh homemade bread made me smile. Then the first bite the tenderness was unmatched. I've eaten 20+ dollar Ruben's that don't even come close to this. My only zonk is that they don't offer pastrami only corned beef. The lady at the front desk was very nice and helpful. This place has been here since 1987, always looks empty, in a sketchy neighborhood with hardly any advertisement...so how has this place stayed in business for so long!? This mom & pop shop makes their own bread daily, they have a small menu and they're an example of someone that has mastered their craft, not a "jack of many trades and master of none" I believe that the chemical plants around the area and a faithful local clientele are the recipients of their beautifully executed sandwiches, and I feel lucky to have this place around, my kids also love their sandwiches far more than all the sandwich shops around the area. This place had a lot of positive reviews and I wanted to see what the hype was about. I ordered the Reuben sandwich combo which came with chips and a drink. First, let me say, this is a small family owned business. The decor is not like your big chain sandwich places like Subway or Jersey's Mike. But don't let that deter you. The people are still nice. The sandwich was delicious. The bread that is used is unlike no other. Very delicious. I'm not an avid sandwich eater, but this was one of the best that I have had. It's definitely worth trying out. I came in at 11 on a Wednesday. I like that my turkey sandwich came out piping hot and fresh. The bread was unique and tasted like it may have been made in house. It was a solid sandwich, nothing stood out about it but was a change from your typical chain sandwich shops. It came sliced in half and I noticed that there were hardly any olives on the half I ate. I looked at the other half and they were all on that side which was disappointing since it would have kicked up the flavor a bit on the other half. I would recommend buying a drink. I've eaten at Hobo's since the 90s. Their sandwiches are very good. I've tried all of them over the years and never was disappointed. Like many people, I have a favorite, Tuna & Cheddar. The service is relatively quick. The eating area, as well as the restrooms are clean. The parking during lunch time sometimes requires parking in the nearby shopping area, which is not unreasonable, maybe a couple minute's walk and worth the effort. read more

Returned to this sandwich shop for my second time and it didn't disappoint. I ordered the Reuben sandwich and it was delicious. The place look decent outside but, once inside or looked runner down that did not affect their food though! The bread people say it's sourdough? It tasted more to me like a large biscuit. The best sandwich bread I have ever tasted! These nice folks tout their homemade sourdough bread and upon the first bite you'll know why. Hobo doesn't try to re-invent the wheel, instead sticking to perfecting classic sandwiches like a Beef and Cheddar, Chicken Salad, Reuben and their take on a Ham and Cheese which they call their signature "Hobo" A large side sandwich is enough to feed two but I just couldn't stop with how good this bread was. The potato salad is similar to that of a grocery store like HEB, which is good but nothing to write home about. The staff is friendly however the place looks a bit run down, especially the bathroom. But not to worry cause they also have a drive-thru! Hobo owners, please open more Houston locations. More people need to taste this extraordinary bread! This place isn't really that famous and it doesn't really stand out at all. The only thing that drew my attention to this sandwich shop was the weird name "Hobo". I decided to give it a shot with my co-workers and to my surprise the sandwiches were delicious! I've never tried anything like it (mostly due to the type of bread they use). The portion of food you get is quite filling and you aren't left hungry. There are usually lunch specials which includes chips and drink. They also have pretty good soups there too. I don't like the fact that they charge you for water though. In most establishments, water is free. Over here, to get water from their tap it costs 25 cents. Are they really making that much profit from water or is it just more annoying? I guess it deters customers from free drinks to fountain drinks. Another thing I don't like about this place is the hours of operation. They aren't open on weekends and close really early so consider this place only for lunch during work and nothing else. Fairly tasty hole in the wall sandwich shop. Hobo's is a bare bones no frills eatery, with maybe a dozen small tables for seating and a counter at the back to place your order. They also offer drive thru for the sandwich man on the go. The sandwiches remind me of a homemade (better) version of Schlotsky's. The bread is that same round shape and most of the sandwich options are reminiscent of their menu. They offer "regular" and "Large" size sandwiches which is just a bigger diameter of bread. I ordered a regular sized one most recently and was sufficiently full with chips and a drink for just under $10. If you're looking for a sandwich and want to go off the beaten path of Subway, Quizno's, Schlotsky's etc. Hobo's is a good contender to check out. read more

First time here, dinned with the husband for lunch. I believe the owner was working the register (not that friendly, maybe he's having a bad day) or maybe me asking him what was on the HoBo sandwich 2x put him out?....the first time I asked he said it so fast I couldn't make out what he was saying, so kindly asked him to repeat. (We were only ones in line btw. I could understand if there was a long line of people him getting frustrated) moving along. I ordered the Hobo (regular size) w/all the trimmings - turkey, ham, salami, Swiss cheese, mustard, mayo, shredded lettuce, tomatoes, onion & olives. The bread was delicious, just like all other reviews mention. I ate every single bite. Husband ordered the roast beef (large size) w/only meat and cheese (this is served w/cheddar) it too was really good!! We would defiantly return if we're in the area.
