This place used to be packed back when I last visited some years ago, but today there were 2 other occupied tables at 12:30 on a Tues. What happened? Ok, here we go. The food looked tasty, the presentation was nice, and portion sizes were great. Meat was tender but lacked seasoning for some flavor. That's ok. The sauce can make up for it, so i thought. The biggest problem I had with the meal was the BBQ sauce. It was a watery consistency, with very little flavor. I hope this wasn't the norm because with a little more seasoning and a thicker sauce, my meal could have been worth another visit. One of my associates and I felt the same way regarding the sauce and seasoning. One other individual at my table had the fish po-boy and said it was delicious, from the soft bread, tasty tarter sauce, and a generous portion of perfectly fried fish. Overall, all foods were hot, the restaurant was clean, and tables neatly laid out. I was warned by my family that this place has changed. I wanted to try it for myself and I wish I would've just listened to them and the reviews. I got a two meat plate with two sides to go. The green beans were canned and bland. The corn looked shriveled up and old. The meat was "tender" but covered up with sauce. Everything appeared to be old and possibly reheated. What is there bad to say about this hidden pleasure nestled behind little Mexico? Nothing! Thank you Yelp and reviewers for leading me on the righteous path of this establishment I would have NEVER found nor looked for in a hundred years. If you find yourself on I 10 coming or going around the Freeport/I10 East area, do a Yelp "nearby" search and this will pop up. The directions/map are pretty much dead on. Drive past the construction barrels (if they still exist when you read this) and through what you will find as an extended part of a Hispanic culture neighborhood riddled with Fruiterias, Carnicersas y Mercados. The restaurant will be on your right as you come up to a light and may I suggested you not take that first parking spot you see on your right because getting out will be very hazardous and tricky when you leave, you've been warned. Instead, turn right around the corner and see if any of those are open, you will not have to fight the perils of backing into oncoming traffic as much as the other side. Does not look fancy from the outside nor does it look run down BUT once you step inside you will get a smacking in the face from the rich smokey aroma emitting from their smoker wherever it is. Now if you've made your way to the table that you pick without biting off someone's arm you will find the menus on the table. A waitress will be with you shortly. Prices are VERY decent for what you get and the amount. I got the 3 meat plate which consisted of the brisket, sausage and ribs. The sides that I chose enhanced my wow factor and surprised me with the crisp and freshness of the onion rings. These aren't the whataburger half dollar sized battered onion rights I'm used too, these things were a very good size. The potato salad, have you ever taken a fork/spoon of a potato salad and was turned off by the over powered flavor of mustard or it was too dry? Well say no more, they had it on spot today, just the right amount of wet ingredients to allow the bits to slide down the throat while allowing you to still enjoy the flavor without all of the mustard that some places use. The brisket was very tender, you don't need a knife to cut it but it does not have the depth of smoke that a place like my now favorite Corkscrew bbq has, but it is almost close and still better priced. The black charr on the outside boosts the flavor for the inside and the bbq sauce..............oh the bbq sauce!........ The bbq sauce, tangy zing with the sure lingering notes of brown sugar and the eye spectacle of pepper dotting the cup that I got. Not over powered with vinegar and just thick enough to allow it to hold onto your meat that is either poured on or dipped. This sauce would be great if sold in the store. The sausage was ok, was not bad, didn't knock me off of my chair but still always good company with other bbq meats. The ribs, excellent, fall off of the bone, seasoned, smoked to a way that would make one want just a rack of those. Most of the smoke flavor resides in this little package and will have you coming back for more. It's probably the best meat on the menu but don't derive from your adventure to try the others, they're worth it. Service was good, not overwhelming and lots of sincere. Interior, lots of good country music, down low people coming in just to have some great bbq and a peaceful time. I noticed lots of elderly people here which adds to your backdrop sense that this place is approved by all ages easily . Craving some bbq today and this location appeared on DoorDash so I gave it a shot. I imagine it might fare better in person because delivery tends to diminish the quality of even the best locations. Today I tried the two meat plate, sliced beef and sausage accompanied by two sides, beans and coleslaw. Everything was good, nothing was outstanding. The sliced brisket was dryer than I like yet was marbled with fat. It was a strange shade of off white but tasted just fine. The sausage was tasty as was the coleslaw. The beans tasted undercooked and were not satisfying. Not sure that the ride over here didn't attribute to the lackluster of this meal so will try in person in the Covid free future. read more

I had this place bookmarked for a long time after reading about it and always looking for good BBQ. I went there last night coming in from out of state for dinner. This part of town is an area I don't frequent but since I was passing by I gave it a shot. For dinner I tried their 1/2 chicken plate with 2 sides. I chose the beans and upon the waitresses suggestion the potato salad. The chicken was very warm and reasonably moist with their BBQ sauce slathered over it. It was ok but not better than a 3. The sauce was basic in taste and nothing memorable. The beans were pinto beans and also rated as a 3. However the potato salad which was mayo based was a 4. Creamy and flavorful I enjoyed. It was a spot on recommendation. My service was good. My overall experience was a 3. I doubt I will return because of its location relative to where I live. If I did I would like to try another meat. My belief is that this place is only a 3 no matter what you order. read more

Solid, old school BBQ joint located close to North Shore Middle School and the old High School campus. Walk in and you notice the no-frill interior with plenty of seating. They also have additional, covered seating outside. When you walk in, the smoky aroma immediately hits you. Plus, there won't be a wait out the door to eat here. The sides, too, were tasty. I preferred the beans over the potatoes but they were just fine as well. I know people can be pretty picky when it comes to potato salad. B-I-L's is creamy, "mustardy" enough and a little tangy...and that's just how I like 'em. The beans weren't overly sweet and were cooked just long enough and without being too mushy. The sauce was a nice enhancer and wasn't too sweet or too smoky. However, this place almost fits the bill. They do not have sweet tea! What self respecting barbecue joint doesn't have sweet tea? That aside, the food is quite worth it. I started eating at brother-in-law's bbq about 18 years ago. The restaurant was always immaculately clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. The food was delicious and always hot when served. Never had food there that wasn't the best BBQ you could find inHouston. People came for miles to eat there always saying where they were from and it was definitely worth the drive to eat what was surely the one TEXAS real rendition and #1 example of that REAL taste of Texas. I thought I'd give it another try for dinner tonight, and it was DISGUSTING. I ordered 2 baked potatoes that had hardly any toppings on them, and a sliced beef sandwich with a side of fries. The fries were RAW! The brisket on the sandwich was cold, and it wasnt even packed well. The fries were thrown in the bottom of the bag and spilled everywhere, the sandwich was wrapped in foil and ended up under the potatoes, so it was crushed. The slaw isn't my first choice but for others in my family it hits the spot. The beans are the "bees knees", as they use their signature BBQ sauce for the base and there is brisket mixed in there too. They also offer steak/chicken finger baskets, burgers and BBQ sandwiches that I used to love as a kid! My usual meal is either the chicken fried steak plate or the chopped beef sandwich. For the chopped beef, the meat is always tender and there is no lack of flavor and sauce! I have been known to order two on the way home from work, have one for dinner and the other for breakfast...yumm!
