i have seen advertised about the store. We were passing by so we stopped in. The prices seemed a little high on many items I grabbed a bag of fresh (unfrozen) chicken wings. I thought I would make them the next day ( today ) This morning I went to get milk out for coffee and my entire refrigerator stunk to high heaven. I will not be visiting this establishment ever again. And I will put the word out to everybody in my community! I have been a customer there for 35 years, as has my family, and we have not always been happy with the customer service, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back, for me. After a long, hard, hot day's work, I stopped off to get my wife and me a chicken breast meal for dinner. When I got home, I discovered that one of the pieces of chicken was not a breast, but a thigh. Neither one of us can eat dark meat, and even if we could, there was very little meat on that thigh. I immediately called to speak with the person that had waited on me, but, instead, I was put on the phone with a young lady, "Kristen", who told me that Gerald Hocker's "thing is", he requires a customer to drive the piece of chicken in question all the way back to his establishment, in order to get it replaced or be given a credit. I asked to speak with the manager, but that request was not granted. This was an extremely poor, poor customer service experience. If it is true that this is Mr. Hocker's "thing", he has obviously not heard the phrase, "Just give them the pickle!" read more

We keep hearing how good Hockers fried chicken is but after trying this evening at 5pm, we must disagree. We ordered the 12 piece at $23.99. You cannot choose your pieces, but get three breadts, 3 wings, 3 thighs and 3 legs. The breast pieces were moist, but the dark meat thighs and legs were extremely dry and the texture was overcooked. same with the wings. You cannot order white vs. dark unless you pay by the piece. Wexwere actually disappointed! I will not be back for fried chicken.....it was less than standard compared to the local crab houses and Royal Farms. And....very overpriced. read more

First time here was about 2 weeks ago. We hear Dan Talk about this place a lot. Lunch platters was ok and ice cream was better. Went for the breakfast today, and the deli counter employee, she was very rude. Almost said forget it. We made a mistake by asking what type of scrapple they use and she immediately sucked her teeth and said, I don't know and the young male employee said, want me to check? She said sure. Food homemade, seating available, plenty of parking, great prices, ice cream and coffee bar. The staff is nice and they have to go sandwiches. Their are fresh soups and deserts. Made to order and pre-made food bar. This is a best kept secret and we frequent this place when in town. Last stay was 11 days and we were probably at hockers convenience deli area everyday for something or another. This store makes me feel like I am an inconvenience and that they are doing me a favor by being there. The older women who work there are downright cold and unfriendly toward their customers. Five visits this year & this is the second time I had horrible service in the grocery store. Waited in the check out lane for tobacco products for more than 5 minutes; two managers walked past & saw me waiting, three girls at the checkout lanes also saw me waiting. Not one employee did a thing to get me service, the store was not busy at all! Maybe Two other customers in the store at the same time. I have tried to support local business because I care; if owners of Hockers want to know why they lost my business to WAWA & Lowe's; this is why. Your employees don't care; you should be teaching them to make the customers number one. Really I have seen this many time at your establishment over the past 5 years; with the exception of the deli take out counter in the store next to the grocery store on Ocean View Ave. Have no desire to support your stores anymore; maybe you just have too much money too care. Don't even think about going here - the produce is yuck - the fresh corn was horrible and glad you could husk it before buying - ended up getting a few things but will never return - employees were awful with bad attitudes - my bag of charcoal ended up in the previous persons order and when i said something the bagger said well he paid for it instead of running after that poor guy who likely had a gas grill at home or better still offer to go get me a new bag - no I had to do that - it's crazy old rundown grocery with a hardware store included - should be torn down - I'm disappointed wanted to shop local but there is nothing super at this center - go to giant or Harris teeter! read more

I love fried chicken so I'm always looking to see who has the best depending on what area I'm in. This past weekend hubby and I were in Broadkill Beach to visit a friend for her birthday so I googled best fried chicken and this place came up. Initially I went into the grocery store but was told by a nice gentleman in the deli that the fried chicken was sold at their deli around the corner. The deli was at the back of the store and I quickly found the chicken and placed my order. The prices are a little high for just chicken (no sides) - $19.50 for 12 pieces but I figured it must be worth it. The chicken had a great flavor and was super moist on the inside so well worth every penny and the staff at the deli are very friendly and efficient. Would definitely go back when at the beach, I always prefer patronizing local businesses as opposed to chains and Hocker's fried chicken is a perfect example of why. read more

Hands down THE BEST FRIED CHICKEN in the surrounding beach community. Forget KFC, POPEYES and any other fast food chains serving chicken. The batter is always crispy and never oily. The chicken is juicy, never dried out...even the wings are never dried up. Price is very reasonable. Don't expect a nice seating area since it is a deli and small grocery store. Hockers looks like a hole in the wall from the outside but it hosts a local hidden gem with their indoor ice cream stand. The ice cream is outstanding and they provide large satisfying portions. The inside of the building is dated with bad lighting and lots of stained ceiling tiles. Staff was friendly. Ice cream is recommended. read more

Our friends brought us here for Ice Cream and shocked the heck out of us with the size of a small. It was shocking and we were sure that they had misunderstood, but it was for real. Ordiarily, I love this store and would give it 5 stars, but this is based on the deli section. I love their wingettes. I have bought them at both stores. However, I wanted 6. They price them by 5 or 10. I asked for 6. The cashier had to call the food manager. No, she said, it is 5 or 10. Now how hard is it to take the price for 5, divide it by 5, and add that amount to the extra wing? I was willing to pay. Not rocket science (these are not pre-packaged, they are served from the bar.) Really, this is not the type of service one expects from Hockers. This is a little grocery story and ice cream/food joint in what seems like the middle of no where. Personally, I think the grocery store is cute and clean but a tad high priced. When you need convenience, that's the price you have to pay. I've purchased lamb, yellow water melon and a few other things here. I miss the old one. Deli selection all Boars Head just like everyone else. Deli Salads all pre dished out in containers with low selection. Out of fried chicken. Used to be able to get unique items like pepperoni cheese and cure 81 ham not anymore. At 3pm on Friday bakery out of self serve bagels and rolls. Seriously? I went to Hocker's today for gas and was also going to buy 2 pieces of fried chicken breast. The woman who put burnt chicken in bag K.Garrison, told me if I didn't take it she would have to throw it away since I looked at the open bag. I said I wanted a cheese steak. She ignored me and started to take other orders. When I asked her name she screamed it at me. I stayed and ordered the cs even though this woman embarrassed me. There was another worker older woman carrying over a breakfast to someone seated and she says to Ms. Garrity, I'm rich so wait on me.
