Just picked up my items from the CSA for the 9th week. Each week you are allowed to pick 8 items…read morefrom a short CSA list. Items at the White Barn Store that are NOT on the CSA list: raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cantelope, corn, beans, etc. etc. 15 weeks in the CSA so it is about $43 a week if you do the CSA. You can choose only 8 items on a list if you do the CSA. Only 8. As a sample, one item has been: one zucchini, one yellow squash, one garlic clove, 3 beets, one raddhicio, one cabbage, etc. Given the $43 a week CSA price, then each item is about $5.25. So, if you do the CSA you are paying $5.25 for ONE zucchini, $5.25 for one garlic clove, $5.25 for 3 beets, $5.25 for a green cabbage. I have done CSAs for over a decade and the idea used to be that a person will "invest" in the farm up front and it it is a good year then there is a bounty of veggies, if it is a bad year you help the farmer by ensuring they have a set fund to work from. This has not been a bad year. Sadly, this farm does not allow the CSA investor to share in the harvest. Instead we pay over $5 for a single zucchini or garlic clove while we see other shoppers who didn't do the CSA be able to pay less. If you joined this CSA and are disappointed, please don't give up on CSAs. There are much better ones out there that respect the CSA investor.

The brownish tomatoes were great for snacking with salt and pepper, but we also made a caprese with them. The melon was fresh, juicy and sweet, but mild. The rind was soft enough to eat! A few items looked like they had started to go bad, but overall the selection was interesting. When they're not staffed, they use an honor system with prices listed on a board and a cash box, and they also accept Venmo. The prices were reasonable for a farm stand, and I like supporting local farmers whenever I can. I've seen they do CSA here, and I may try it out this year.

Always good food and laughs when I pick up my weekly half share. And always great company to learn from and share recipes with. Every Tuesday in the summer and fall I pick up a random assortment of fruits and veggies at their West Side home, conveniently located. I look forward to the classics like lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, basil, the "I usually walk by that in the grocery store" items like chard and turnips, and the "I've never seen or eaten that before!" items like garlic scape and kholrabi. And they have eggs to buy, too! The best part is that I never feel stupid asking "what is this?" or "what is the simplest way to cook this?" I love the CSA because it encourages me to experiment in the kitchen and eat many things that I wouldn't otherwise buy at a farmer's market. It's fun, supportive, great community, and makes food an adventure. The farm itself, now in Johnston at the historic Mathewson Farm, is perfectly picturesque. Chickens wander around. The old barn and farm house are charmingly old school in their architecture and wear. As a CSA member, you can choose to pick up your weekly harvest in Johnston or on the West Side of Providence. They make it really convenient, and have a fun blog, too! Matt and Catherine also welcome CSA members to the farm to participate in the farming, whether picking or weeding. It's an educational experience, too. If you're not into CSAs, you're probably already a fan of Red Planet Farm - they supply to Chez Pascal, La Laiterie, Local 121, New Rivers, and Nick's On Broadway, as well as co-ops like Little City Growers and Urban Greens. And if you know Providence dining, you know that it doesn't get ANY better than the restaurants listed above! I purchased a couple of the chickens they raise and I can tell you they were just delicious! My wife and daughter are from China and find American chicken to be lacking in flavor. They loved this chicken and I have been advised to go buy a couple more. We have over-bred our chickens and we feed them who knows what so they get big and plump but have no flavor. These chicken are raised is a fenced in pasture I saw myself, and they move the enclosure around to give them fresh pasture periodically. I will be trying the eggs next when I go buy myself a couple more chickens and will provide feedback on the eggs,

I am particularly fond of their organic ground beef and different cuts of steak --- the meat is so flavorful and very lean. Not for folks who like marbled meat --- this is from grass fed, open pasture animals. Everything they sell is excellent quality. Bring cash or check book --- no credit cards. I believe they also offer on-line ordering, but I've never used it and prefer to shop in person.

Me and my husband brought our kids to the fall festival this past weekend. We had a great time! For…read morethe four of us it was $42. We walked through the petting zoo, there was horses, sheep, goats, roosters, turkeys, pigs, cows, the kids got a kick out of it. We each got a small pumpkin to paint or take home which the kids really enjoyed. They offered horse drawn rides, tractor rides, face painting, story time with mother goose & a corn maze (which was not much of a maze). It is really perfect for kids 2-10. The store offers a selection of breads, pies, jams and produce. They sell ice cream, and had cider donuts available and outside they have a small shack that sells hot dogs, chips, etc. Overall we spent about 2 hours here and really enjoyed it!
