I needed a cake on short notice. I called the store to see if they had a banana cake, because they are amazing. They said that they did and they asked if I wanted a message written on the top. I had them put a small greening on the top. When I showed up, the woman behind the counter said that the Baker had gone above and beyond and that she hoped I didn't mind. When I looked at the cake, I was thoroughly satisfied. They are not a fancy bakery, looking at them. But their products are delicious. Excellent cake shop. I ordered a birthday cake and the white cake was perfect. Very soft, not crumbly, really good flavor. I also got a custard filling and a raspberry sauce inside. Fantastic pricing, this will be where I go for all my cakes! Great experience from the start. I had to order a birthday cake for my mom in St Clair Shores -- but I'm in LA. My aunt suggested I try Hodell's, but had never had their cakes before. From the phone call, the sales rep was very helpful, super nice and was patient with me ordering site unseen. That was MUCH appreciated. My mom picked up her cake for her party -- no problems at all. Cake was ready, no confusion on if it was already paid for, etc. The next day was her party and she said that EVERYONE loved the white cake with lemon flavoring. In fact, my mom said it was the best, most delicious cake she has ever had. She said it was so light and the frosting was perfect (she is definitely a pro when it comes to frosting flavors) and she said that the lemon was perfect! The black and white cake is a staple when I come to visit family in Michigan. Hands down, this is the absolutely best cake I have ever eaten. The vanilla layer on top and chocolate on the bottom with a very light buttercream icing is beyond delicious. I wish I could find a bakery close to home that could even come close. I look forward to my visits, and hope this place can stay open and not drowned out by the large multi-department stores. I ordered a wedding cake for my wedding where I showed them a picture of exactly what I wanted. They couldn't do the simplest details on the picture and the cake was much smaller than I had expected (looks like a birthday cake). Also, I wanted flowers on it like the picture I showed them which they did say they did not do but would get in contact with my florist to set that up. I don't know what happened but I ended up with a small 4 tier cake with little detailing and nothing like what I wanted. I didn't get a call back with an apology or at least an excuse for what had happened, hey as long as they got their money! Overall, I wouldn't recommend going here for wedding cakes. read more

This place is only getting 1 star because the food is of good quality. Otherwise they would get NO STARS. The customer service is HORRIBLE. The 2 ladies who "HELPED" me were rude, uninformative, and totally NOT HELPFUL. I basically said thank you, walked out, and took my business ELSEWHERE..... to the Bake Station in Southfield (Closer to my house anyway). They acted like I was bothering them with my questions and requests. I will not go back here ever which is very unforunate. I grew up in the area and this is the first place I thought of to purchase a birthday cake in which I needed customized rather quickly. This place is one of the many staples of SCS and I am all for supporting locally owned businesses. I also had emailed them twice (they state on their website that you can email them for a quote) and I never heard back. So I went in there only to be treated badly. I was pressed for time and aggravated by the rudeness so I left abruptly and purchased a cake across town in moments notice, exactly what I wanted, and CHEAPER too. Thanks, Hodells for your non-help. I first had a piece of Hodell's cake when a co-worker brought in a piece of cake from her son's birthday. It was one of the best pieces of cake I had ever eaten; a moist, light yellow cake with a raspberry filling and a delicious buttercream frosting. I went to Hodell's shortly thereafter and was instantly impressed by how spotlessly clean the place was; gleaming cases, shiny floors, even the back room was spotless. The variety of cakes and pastries was the second thing that impressed me; all kinds of cookies, several different types of cakes (many which were unique such as a banana cake with chocolate frosting), various pastries, breads, muffins, jelly rolls, and some interesting confections like a pineapple cream square... not to mention a selection of cakes beautifully decorated ready to be personalized for any occasion. The reasonable prices were the third thing that impressed me; fair prices for delicious baked goods. I ordered a "sleeping beauty" which is like an individual sized piece of Sander's bumpy cake. I also picked up a yellow cake with buttercream frosting (moist, fresh cake with a delicious frosting) and some cookies which were all delicious and homemade tasting. The staff was friendly and greeted many of the other customers who walked in by name. I returned a few weeks later for a birthday cake which everyone raved about. I then ordered a specialty cake for Cinco de Mayo. I wanted something specific written on it (it was a little off-color) and they accommodated me with no problem. My friend loved her cake and we've been talking about it since. I would recommend Hodell's to anyone looking for a good bakery with delicious products and a helpful staff. For years, we got all of our bakery cakes from Hodell's, because the cakes were delicious and the bakery was conveniently close to us. However, something has changed in their icing recipe. We noticed on a birthday cake we bought earlier this year that the buttercream icing doesn't taste very sweet, and has a bit of a waxy texture. If I'm not mistaken, they charge extra for buttercream. Thinking perhaps there was a mistake in which icing they used the last time, we asked to sample the buttercream before placing an order. Yep, that was it, the icing was different.
