Quick Turn-Around. Was told by the end of the week and got it in 1 day! Hoffman's is not much to look at. It's not really a store, more of a work space really. I've been special ordering closed cell foam from here for a couple years now. My custom orders are taken with a deposit and the turn around is really fast. Sometimes it takes a couple days, but on my last trip in I received a call that my order was ready for pick up the following day. :-( I was getting estimates on refilling the 4 back cushions with foam on my leather sofa.. The cushions had had it.. As instructed, I sent jpeg photographs first prior to contacting them directly. After they reviewed my photographs I had a conversation with them on the phone regarding the cost of the project.. They gave me an estimate.. and mind you I understand estimates very well.. Its part of what I do professionally. When I arrived at their little shop with the actually cushions, the quote suddenly doubled in price... WTF? They had pictures, we had a discussion... I understand $5 maybe $10 more per piece.. but TWICE AS MUCH? (From a $120 job quote, to a $260 job?!!) Bait and switch people. I got up and left the place with cushions in tow. I dropped off the cushion to my vintage leather club chair this AM. Memo looked it over, suggested which replacement foam would be best, took some measurements, quoted me $30 and said it'd be ready this afternoon. Four hours later he called. It looks fantastic! Who knew that just changing out tired foam would make such a difference?! There was a small tear in the leather that he also fixed; no charge. Now THAT'S customer service! The chair is way more comfy, too. My wonderful Statement leather chair is ready for another 50 years of service but I won't be waiting that long to give him a facelift. Yay Hoffman! read more

I bought some 5" foam for a home-made camping mattress. They have several samples (types of foam and degrees of firmness) to lie on or sit on. They don't stock anything. They order whatever type/size/thickness you choose and mine was there to pick up the next day. The main guy is named Memo and was pretty helpful. The foam seemed a little firmer than what I sampled, but maybe that's my imagination. It worked out well. I don't know if their prices are the best, or if there is a better place to get foam. The neighborhood is a little seedy, but no real problem during the day. They do a lot of custom sewing of covers, etc., but I can't speak to that. read more

These guys are NOT the fastest in town, but they do solid top of the line work and at a price the others cannot touch. They completely re upholstered my 37 sailboat and the job was FANTASTIC. They had trouble getting the fabric I wanted, so it took a couple of weeks longer than anticipated, but the final product was well worth the wait. Not only that, they made a custom wheel and helm cover FREE of Charge because of the wait. Now that's service. These guys will save you $$$ compared to all the other fabric shops in town and their quality is first rate. You'd be crazy to go anywhere else. read more

I highly recommend Hoffman Foam & Canvas! Well worth the hop & skip from Encinitas. I went in thinking I was going to be ordering a 4" cushion for our outdoor teak bench, but after sitting on the 6" dense foam, changed my mind. I went there on Wednesday afternoon and PICKED UP the finished piece today, FRIDAY! A 2 day turnaround! Yowza! And they did an excellent job! The owner Memo is the kindest person! Oh yeah, they have 2 adorable little chihuahua's in a pen that will yap when you first come in, but they settle down when you talk to them. I went there to get a seat cushion for my desk chair. At medical supply stores, for people with back issues... cushions sold specifically as seat cushions, in either gel or high density foam cost at least $25, and upwards of $60 or $70. I found what I needed at Hoffman for $12! 3" High-Density foam. I'm on it now, real comfy! The two brothers who own it are helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. They will also cutom-sew a seat cover. I'd say, a good place for any foam! read more

I tried UFO Foam & Fabric, and like them a lot too, but Hoffman has AMAZING turn-around time, way better prices on labor, and they are just so nice. Good job on making brand new cushions, but... required a bit of work on my end. 5-star for workmanship, quality (as best as I can tell so far), and timeliness ONCE started, pricing. 3-star on communication and follow through. Started w/ missing our 1st appointment to measure existing needs, he was a no-show and did not call to say he's running late, or reschedule... 5 hours after our appointment, I had to call to see what happened. Re-scheduled appointment went well, but failed "will call you back" almost caused us to go elsewhere. In short; good work, delivered in time he said once things began, very good price, everything aside from issues mentioned went well. Just "buyer beware" if you contract them for work... you will have to keep on them and be proactive to get your work done, but in the end it's worth it if looking for good work at cheap 'cash' price. read more
