Bought seat covers for my 1988 Toyota 4-Runner from Dash Designs. The driver's side seat had springs protruding from long wear and tear. I asked Ming's to repair the springs and install the seat covers. They did a terrific job. The seat covers fit like a glove over the originals, and the fabric is snug. I have a Room & Board leather sofa that's maybe 12 years old. GF was complaining that it was getting tired and uncomfortable and it was probably time to replace it. But these sofas are top quality. 100% made in the USA, hardwood frame, top quality craftsmanship and materials. And somewhat expensive. Probably about $3,500 or so. They don't rate the sofa to failure, as they don't expect it to fail. So I had to decide whether to get rid of it and buy something else, probably lower quality and made in China. Or buy new cushions and foam cores (about $800). Or buy new foam cores from the factory (about $400). Or take it to a Fabric Outlet for new foam (about $160) but maybe up to 2 weeks to do the job and quality could be inferior. Or take it to a local upholstery shop (Ming's) that I had good prior experience with, and have them replace the foam (about $275). In the end, I took it to Ming's Upholstery in Poway and I was shocked that they did new 4" HR41 high resilience foam cores surrounded by 1" of HR30 (softer) foam and got the job done in only 3 hours. Oh, and I also gave it a good cleaning w/a leather soap and a finishing treatment. I think it looks a lot better. To be clear, the only thing I did was clean the sofa and have Ming's put in the new foam cores. But you can see how nicely it filled out the seating part so those funky wrinkles are mostly gone. They also did a nice job recovering 4 stools that I brought them last year (that job took 3 days, rather than 3 hours.) Before and after photos. read more

If you want the perfect job, then don't rush them & allow them to do their magic! I often search for antique, classic & old accent chairs, arm chairs & Furniture of solid wood carved, art work going back to early 20th century. I look for rare handmade woodwork, the wood to be in good condition but the piece in need of repairs. I keep an eye on top notch neighborhoods' moving sales, old family estates' furniture sales, salvation army, goodwill, Facebook or Craigslist markets; you will be amazed what treasures you may find in these places! If I find time, I pinpoint some valuable pieces worth refurbishing. I like single accent chairs of Victorian, Colonial or Italian Styles with fabulous craftmanship & detailed woodwork, handmade to perfection. I make sure the piece is not damaged. I don't like fabric, so I purchase these pieces & take them to Mr. Ming to turn them to leather. If fabric gets dirty, it is hell to clean it up. Leather is easy to clean up. In addition, leather is a statement in luxury. For each piece, Ming and specifically Maribel know which technique to use, which fabric & material to use, which decorative type & color designer nails to use to bring out the true essence of the piece! When Ming is done, the piece comes alive! After Ming is done, I clean & polish the carved wood & voila, a piece of old jalopy junk becomes a splendidly perfect piece of classic antique furniture, a throne worthy of a Queen to sit on! The only thing Ming's was given were many measurements and a digital of a large steel workbench. It stood 5 feet tall, 45 inches wide with a work area at waste level. Several compartments had to be reaches from top to bottom. There was no rush to get it done. (KOBALT 3 drawer workbench) Not all of the workbench needed to be accessed at ally times. Velco tape down the middle, grommets in three places - top, middle, & bottom. The grommets allowed for the bench to be totally uncovered and hooked to I-bolts on the right and left corners. My 15-year-old leather match sectional was miserably uncomfortable but the leather was still in great shape, so we brought it to Ming's for an overhaul. They replaced all the foam in the seats, re-stuffed the backs, and tightened all the webbing. It's like having a brand-new sectional! This place does good quality work and prices are fair but they seem to not have enough help, are overwhelmed, and communication is poor. They give you a date as to when your item will be ready but when you call before going to pick up, it turns out that they are behind yet they don't call and let you know that. I wanted to repair the rip in my old car's seat cushion, and thankfully I found Ming's. After disassembling the car seat myself, I quickly learned re-uphostering a leather car seat was way more difficult than my DIY skill level could handle. Fortunately, I found Ming's Upholstery strategically right next to Joann's in Poway. It's in a great location where all the first time DIY'ers go to Joann's a few times thinking they can DIY re-uphostering a car seat, but then eventually realizing this is way more complicated than hemming a garment, lol . Ming's was able to reupholster my disssembled car seat cushion at a reasonable price, and the work is excellent. A good compromise for those DIYers who take the time to take a car seat apart and get the help of an expert to do the actual re-uphostering. Thanks, Ming's. Really happy with the results. read more

There are so many great reviews I just wanted to share my experience because my project wasn't done to my satisfaction. I brought in 6 cushions from two patio chairs and two ottomans. Not a big job, picked fabric they had in stock because it was much cheaper. Job was over $400. When I picked up the items they were wrapped in plastic, they took them out to my car, didn't show me the work at all and I had to see the finished product when I got home. Enclosed are a couple of pictures. One is of a faded spot on the fabric. At first I thought maybe it was some kind of chalk they used to outline the fabric but it didn't come off when I tried to wipe it clean. The other is the mashed corners of the seats. The pictures are of the finished product right out of the plastic, the cushions were not even sat on yet and they were already mashed and creasing at the corner. If the foam inside was no longer good I would have been happy to purchase a new piece to make a solid cushion. I was never told there was an issue, I brought them in covered so I did not know the condition of the actual cushion and we did not have a problem with them in the past. Overall just thought based on the reviews they would have been perfect and they were not. Also when I came to pick up they had lost the paperwork. Stood around for 30 minutes waiting for them to find the paperwork. They asked the person who does the upholstery and told him what the job was, he went and got the items because he knew what the job was and where it was located. read more

Went to Ming's with a friend yesterday...the young lady working up front was super friendly and helpful. She gave us some help looking for fabrics but didn't push anything...when we saw fabric another customer had brought in, she offered that it was purchased at Jo-Ann's (which is just a couple doors down). Ming's has an interesting approach...you can bring in your stuff for an estimate and to sign a work order and get into the queue...you take everything home so you can keep using it (and they don't have to store it!) and they will call you when they are ready. Prices quoted were very reasonable. I saw some chaise cushions that a lady was putting into her car and they looked really nice. Hopefully my friend will be as fortunate as well! read more

Highly recommend Ming's. They are very friendly, helpful and fast. My two chairs were finished in about 2 weeks and I'm so pleased with the results. They have a huge selection of fabrics to choose from on their store. Added bonus though is that they're located right next to JoAnne's fabrics. So they are completely comfortable telling you how much fabric you'll need for the job and you can go shop next door and look for fabrics there as well. I lucked out and JoAnne's was having a big fabric sale. They have a pretty decent selection of upholstery fabrics too. You can save a lot of money doing it this way. Ming's pricing is very reasonable as well. It cost me $660 for both of my chairs + the cost of the fabric. read more

I paid $275 and they were able to match the color and material almost exactly. I was able to make an appointment within the week and dropped my car off the night before and picked it up the next day. I'm not sure why I've not made a review for this company before because their work is (and has always been for me) excellent! I've used them to reupholter (both seat and wrapped back) a full set of high end dining room chairs and at a different time - a hugh set of outdoor furniture (frames, cushions, etc) with heavyduty Sunbrella 'fabric.' Just last month they remade all the slipcovers for my very large sectional located in a different city. They picked it up and delivered it within one week. Their shop does have a large selection of fabric but I chose to purchase all the fabric myself elsewhere. They have no problem with that. I'm super pleased with all their work on these three very different types of jobs. Next time I'll add photos. read more
