Bottom line: if you're in MI City and into vintage, classic, nostalgic, maybe even historical pieces, and at fair and reasonable prices, then these are the people to see. I have been coming here for many years and stop in whenever in town. The shop is located in the artsy part of the redeveloping original downtown and is a part of and reflects perfectly the downtown's eclectic character. The store is located in a great, older retail shop with a covered corner entry that lets them showcase some eye catching pieces to entice you inside. The vibe is slightly cluttered chic with distinct sections and it's easy to peruse based on what you might be looking for or discover things you weren't. I personally like that they are not too worried about "staging" like some places and just get the stuff out there. I am never disappointed at the amazing and eclectic collection of furniture, furnishings, decorations, art, books--almost anything you can think of and many things you wouldn't but glad you saw and bought. I always find something fun, useful, maybe even historical from some perspective, to take home. The owners are super friendly, very good humored (we usually have a yuck about something), and just nice to interact with. Depending on the piece, they may even be willing to entertain offers which is such smart business in this business. All-in-all this place is just fun and I always walk away feeling good about my purchase from both a value and price perspective but also from an interacting with the owners perspective. I always love going into Hoity Toity. They have a wonderful array of retro anything. I have found many nice things there and the price is incredibly low. Always love their incense collection from around the world. The kitchen items and collectibles always take me back to my childhood. For the amount of things in the store it is quite clean and friendly. Every time I visit Franklin Street I am happy they are still there! read more

I'm a big fan of second-hand stores and I think Hoity-Toity in Michigan City does a nice job of culling, organizing and accurately pricing its inventory. We were all five greeted warmly by the 2 staff members and asked if we needed any help. There are a huge amount of items for sale - the shop is a lot bigger than it appears from the outside- and they offer some new items, too, like greeting cards, incense, scarves and crystals. I have to agree with the other Yelper though about the shop's strong incense smell. I get nauseous and headaches from the smell of incense so we only stayed about 5 minutes. It was too much for me. I would have loved to have shopped longer but I couldn't stay due to the smell. It's not a bad smell, just too strong for me. I liked the inventory though and how friendly the staff were. This place should NOT conduct business in Michigan City or any other place at that. The business owners and employees are extremely rude, unprofessional and racist. They definitely have no respect or customer service for their customers. They treat neighboring business negatively and bad mouth them to their customers. You can barely think in this let alone browse through their overpriced trash! The place is not well kept and extremely disgusting. They were not helpful at all and I felt unwelcome because of my race and sexuality. I'm extremely offended and will never recommend this place to anyone. read more

Lol this place is so awful. I went twice just to make sure it was a consistent thing. No one ever greets you there. To describe it perfectly I would say it is a weird little hippy-ish gift shop that has a hoard of furniture picked from the trash or goodwill. They literally pack it so tight you can't even get to some things. Most are beat up , like I said , some trash type stuff. When you do find something nice it's wayyyyy marked up. From my perspective as a Chicagoan who spends a lot of time in "Harbor Country," this shop occupies a very specific niche, which is to "recycle" the not-quite-antique items that fill many homes in vacation communities--places where interiors tend to be way behind the times (if not entirely stuck in the past). The first time I went in this shop I saw a solid and attractive settee with a hardwood frame being offered for just over a hundred dollars. Numerous small hardwood side tables in good condition and fairly priced. There are also a lot of decent rugs which seem to be priced fairly in relation to what a new rug of that same type would cost. If you need to buy a dresser or mirror and can't afford one from Crate and Barrel or Frontgate, you could do worse than to stop in here. Inventory seems to turn over fast--Chicago people probably snap a lot of stuff up and then refurbish it. Prices are low enough to make that economical. read more

I have been here a few times and that was one too many! The stuff here is way overpriced and doesn't even look that valuable. The store is full of mostly what looks like junk and is very cramped. This is NOT Beverly Hills and I do not want to pay 75 dollars for a picture I can get at a cheaper place for 25. read more

Honestly, this shop does have a few interesting pieces. But anything interesting they may have is typically marked up three times what it's worth, which I wouldn't mind so much but it's such a weird shop. For one, the person behind the counter just stands there looking at you, never says hi or can we help you; it's just so awkward. Second, there's a confusing crystal shop towards the back with rocks that look like those little gift shops at caverns or museums. They charge $50 for tapestries you can buy at other little local shops for $12, and I wonder if they know that. And as another reviewer mentioned, the incense is seriously way too much. Gosh I LOVE the stuff I find in this store. The owners have a great eye and I have bought several really cool pieces for my summer home. I have been disappointed lately however about the decision to flood the store with the smell of incense. We went in for first Friday tonight hoping to find a couple of chairs. I was incredibly excited to watch this new consignment shop open and found the wares to be fun and interesting, but I am disappointed by the unfriendliness of the staff. As the only person in the store I'd expect some sort of welcome (for example, "Hi there!", "Welcome!", or "Can I help you?") but instead I was walked past several times and glared at (specifically, eye contact was made but nothing was said by staff. I consider that a glare.) I was the only one in the store and no, I do not look unkempt, homeless, or anything of the like. Further, when I inquired about an item and hoped to negotiate the price - common practice in a second-hand store - the staff responded with a laugh, not a counter. I feel an appropriate response would have been, "Thank you for you offer but the best we could do is x." Not a laugh. I am so happy to see a new, local shop open in this area but given the unfriendliness shown to me, I will not return. I do, however, hope the owners see this review as constructive and make the appropriate changes. I wish them the best. read more

Love this store! The furniture and furnishings here look mostly less than say 10-70 years old, but they are all carefully chosen and stylish. Generally in good condition (ready to go) as well. Reasonably priced. A notable absence of trinkets and musty clutter. Well worth a visit if you are trying to decorate your home with useful, stylish things that have some character.
