One of the most bizarre adventures I have ever faced in my entire existence. I wanted to experience Sushi for lunch with a good friend of mine, based on Yelp reviews decided to visit this sorry excuse for Sushi Place. We decided to go with the Endless Sushi so I ordered different varieties being that it is endless Sushi! Well guess what!? I did not like some parts I ordered so I decided to try something else. In a heavy English accent, the waiter tells me whatever you don't finish will be charged a regular price!! I was confused at first and had to double check with the manager who she was very hard to talk with! She even made false claims that my friends has been coming here all the time! But, he corrected her as it was their first time as well!!! I was forced to finish my plate to avoid being overcharged $30 for mediocre Sushi! I was crying to finish my plate! When me and my sister's plans to eat sushi at her favorite local spot fell through because the restaurant wasn't open, we thought we'd check out what the sushi offerings at Hokkaido were like. Although she had eaten at this spot for the hibachi style food before, she had never sat down at the restaurant for sushi for lunch, so this was our first experiment. The restaurant itself is very pretty and big. They have a separate dining room for the grills, and a separate room for regular dining. Along the floor, they have a cool channel of water housing tiny baby coi fish swimming. This place seemed like it could easily accommodate a nice date night or family outing depending on what you are looking for. As for the food, our lunch was delicious! I liked that they offered a selection of bento box lunches or unlimited sushi menus, which gave us a lot of variety to choose from. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not a huge sushi person myself, but I enjoyed the variety and quality of lunch, and am starting to like sushi more and more with each try. I ate the bento with with vegetable tempura, california roll, rice, and gyoza. This was a lot of food for only 9.99, and I'd gladly go back in the future when visiting my sister again. read more

Fabulous place to go for all you can eat sushi and easily the best place to get sushi in Peoria (and better than some of my favorite places in Chicago)! I've been here twice now and both times, have been so impressed with the quality of their sushi-grade fish, the service, and the beautiful interior. Lunch price is great steal at $11.95 and dinner is around $20 for all you can eat sushi, which gives you access to appetizers, rolls, and nigiri. If you get the deluxe Emperor's Buffet version which costs $25 for dinner, this includes additional specialty rolls, sashimi, and extra appetizers like shrimp tempura! I'm always skeptical of Asian restaurants that offer every single Asian cuisine on their menu, but a few friends ordered General Tsao's chicken and chicken katsu, which looked amazing and their meals came in very generous portions. I went to Hokkaido on a whim because one of my friends and I were craving sushi. Hokkaido separates people who would like Hibachi or those who would like to eat sushi into two rooms. The hibachi menu has many different types of meats and fish. There is a $5 split fee if you choose to share with another person. We sat in the sushi section. Our water was taken quickly and the sushi took about 20 minutes to prepare. The crab rangoon was creamy and the flavor of the crab was not overbearing. It also comes with shredded carrots as a garnish as well as a sweet orange sauce for dipping. I ordered the Mango roll which had salmon, avocado, and mango. It had a sweet mango drizzle on top that pulled all of the ingredients together. I also had one ikura nigiri piece. It was the first time I have tried caviar, but it was a good first time. Both sushi pieces were fresh and were refreshing. The price is a little steep, but you get 7-8 pieces depending on the type of roll you get. The ambience of Hokkaido is classy, yet you can make it casual. My favorite part upon entering were the fish that swam around in the river in the floor. It was a nice touch to the atmosphere. In town for work and I seek out sushi no matter where I am at just because i'm an addict and it's healthy for the most part. This place is huge and is one of those establishments you fear with mixed cultured foods; Korean and Japanese. I've been coming here since it was Dynasty buffet which we always enjoyed. Not sure if the same owners but has been through several makeovers in the past 10 years with generally positive changes. But yesterday's sushi lunch was kind of disappointing and I think I've figured out why. The all you can eat sushi has been pared down to "why bother"...really...why not stop the lunch special AYCE sushi altogether. Used to order the Emperiors Dinner AYCE menu for $30, lunch or dinner, which was a bargain...and fun...and worth every penny. The sad thing is that too many people took advantage and stuffed roll after roll down their gullets and had to be rolled out of there like logs at a sawmill. I have literally watched people eat 6-8-10 giant rolls...disgusting. This is, of course, totally against Japanese tradition of savoring and appreciating and honoring the art of sushi. Forcing down a dozen rolls just because you can goes against everything Japanese to begin with. Too bad to...ruined it for everyone. But the saddest thing of all is watching the faces of the people who work there...so much unhappiness that it ruins any chance of fun you might hope to have while trying to enjoy your meal. Not a smile from anyone working there...ever...including the woman hostess who appears to run/own the place. In fact she almost looks as though she would prefer it if you didn't even come at all. Wow! I have been craving sushi all week. Last night I bought a roll from a different place for $10. Today I went to Hokkaido and purchased the lunch deal of TWO rolls, salad, and soup for $10. Both rolls were FANTASTIC! I was very happy with the meal, the value, and the service. I came during the lunch rush, so I was worried it be a long wait. Not at all! My food came hot and fresh right away. Also, my roll had jalapeno and I was worried it would be too spicy, but it was just the right amount of spice! A recent visit here for hibachi was a 180 degree difference than our usual sushi or plated dinners in the dining room. We had reservations for one of their grills with a group of people but they still seemed ill-equipped for our arrival. After about a 10 minute wait with no drink service, the hostess/owner came over to get our drink orders in the worst possible mood. She was surly and grouchy and just said "Drink?" to everyone like we were ruining her night by purchasing her alcoholic beverages. Unfortunately, she remained our only server for the entire visit which really put a damper on the whole fun part of a hibachi dinner. Also I think it might have been approaching 100 degrees in the entire hibachi room the night we were there. The waiter did not want to take our order when we walked in after our group (he was still taking orders). They expected us to wait until they cooked and served the rest of the party. The waiter and manager was very rude to us and did not care that they had not taken our order. Once I said they would get a bad yelp review and the cook offered to make our rice and veggies and then they would take out order. He was very nice about it. The manager then became very friendly. The waiter was still very rude and we had to ask several times before we could get a glass of water. They also did not give bags for the carry out containers. I love sushi. I live in downstate Illinois. That sets the stage for a story of disappointment. However, I tried lunch at Hokkaido today and found that there is a silver lining to my storm cloud. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the ingredients and the talent of the chef. From the soup and salad to the maki rolls and sashimi, everything was fantastic. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The lunch crowd was substantial for a Thursday and drew a cross section of the population reflecting the popularity of the restaurant. This was my first time here and we came for Hibachi. I got the shrimp & chicken, he got NY strip & chicken. We also got a Monster Roll. Their onion soup is amazing, I'd eat that as a whole meal, their ginger salad is remarkable, and our hibachi was by far the best I've had!! Went back to Hokkaido a few weekends ago. Sushi date with the lady. They have an all-you-can-eat sushi menu now. Hell yes. Of course, you gotta eat what you order, or they'll charge you for it. Par for the course, I guess. Either way, it's good stuff. Sushi in central Illinois is a crapshoot, but Hokkaido must have a hookup at the fish market, because their sushi is as fresh as I've had. I typically don't order nigiri around here, but I took a risk and ordered some at Hokkaido. It was unbelievably fresh. Literally. I could not believe that I was eating fish so fresh in Peoria, Illinois. Next time I go, I need to ask the chef where they get the fish from. Can't get enough of Hokkaido! We used to have a place in P-Town years ago called Shogun, but that was way, way back when I thought it was just a restaurant named after a crap show with Richard Chamberlain. The decor is very nice and something you don't expect from a place in Peoria. They even have a big drum for you to bang on the way out while yelling "Domo Arigato!". Anyhoo, about the food. The sushi is excellent, and I'm no spring chicken when it comes to sushi. Especially the Las Vegas Roll. Haven't had a bad roll there yet. Plus, if you go during lunch, there's an all-you-can-eat special for like $12.99, but you have to eat it all or you get charged for what you don't eat. The hibachi is well worth it. Go with the ginger salad, even if you hate ginger with a passion like me, you have to try it. I've seen people actually drink it like it's liquid heroin. Get the sauce for your rice and chicken too, I think they call it "happy sauce" or something. Last, but not least, ask for Sam as your chef, he's a great guy and a lot of laughs. read more

Just ate here, group of 7. Booked a couple of hours before and got a hibachi table, no problems. Blend of family and friends. Very enjoyable experience and food. Service was attentive, drinks always refilled and the menu has a very good set of choices, including great sushi in addition to the hibachi options. The real fun is having your food cooked teppanyaki style right at your table, and if you're in the right mood for a good laugh, the cook will certainly get you there. For us that included catching tasty morsels in our mouths (small pieces of vegetable flipped by the cook in an impromptu game of catch), and getting a blast of sake from about 2 feet away (beware, ready your napkin wisely!), and some flame tricks right off the grill. We added a couple of sushi rolls to the set dinner - rolls tasted fresh and the one with the finely sliced lime was particularly delicious - a very nice touch and definitely on the imaginative end of the sushi spectrum. Mains varied from salmon to chicken to beef. Steak was finely cubed, cooked and delicious. Overall, very entertaining. Came away with a smile, appetites fulfilled, a lunch or two for tomorrow from the generous portions and good times in take-out boxes. The manager dropped by to check in too which was a nice touch. Well worth it, and definitely made our last night in Peoria a lot of fun with family and friends. Will be back next time for more, and this restaurant deserves to do very well if it keeps the food and entertaining presentation to the standard we saw tonight. Good for groups - very social. I was on my own for dinner on a recent Saturday evening so thought I'd give the newest sushi place in Peoria a try. I didn't go for the "community" hibachi experience since I was solo. The first thing that greeted me was the great decor and ambiance. Outstanding job on that subject! I had tuna sashimi, edamame and a Mango Tango roll. Everything was prepared as well as any sushi place I've been (and there are many) and I was impressed by the portion sizes. Tuna sashimi was as fresh as any in town and moreso than most. Went last week with a good friend. Nice atmosphere..more upscale. Tried the Miso Soup...pretty similar to any other I've had. Ordered the Stuffed Jalapeno appetizer. Amazing...crunchy exterior, very spicy but so good. Could have gone without so much of the sauce drizzled on top. The jalapeño was good-sized and super fresh. My friend had the Philadelphia roll and the Las Vegas roll (I think). Both looked very fresh and she said they were awesome. I had the Mount Fuji which was spicy and delicious. I love their sushi, however it seems every time my wife and I come for the emperor dinner ($26 all u can eat sushi) the service gets slower and slower. As a matter of fact, I am beginning to think that they do this on purpose so you start to feel full while waiting, therefore eating less and less. Quick review~ The sushi is hit or miss. Some days will be good, other days it just doesn't taste right. As for non sushi, the only dish I ever had was their peppered steak and egg drop soup. Peppered steak was OK, nothing spectacular whatsoever. Egg drop soup was 3$ for a tiny bowl and again, was just OK. Server went MIA for about 5-7 minutes and I had no rice for about that same amount of time. (Ill give her the benefit of the doubt here).
