My friends and I decided to try Hokkaido in Waco based on the positive reviews. But as soon as we entered, we got the vibe that something was slightly off. The place looked a bit more laid back and chain-like than expected. And from there it only got worse... Three of us ordered different types of rolls. My husband decided to skip lunch after he had a look at the menu and other diners' plates, which turned out to be a smart move. We waited a while for the sushi. Nothing too dramatic but it came out all at once instead of in batches, as other restaurants usually do it - served as soon as it's ready. Hokkaido kept the sushi aside until all orders were ready. This proved a bit of an issue as my friend's sushi roll with sauce, which we think contained mayonnaise, started darkening and changing color a bit, giving away the fact that it had been ready for several minutes and had been allowed to sit on the counter. The sushi itself was about the same quality you could expect from HEB's sushi counter, so not very good. The fish and avocado in my two very simple rolls (I had a hunch I should stick to basics that day, and I'm glad I followed it) were fine, but the rice was not very good and kinda hard, not sticky. I ordered a side of rice as well and that didn't come out right either. It was hard and flavorless. In fact, it was probably the worst rice I've ever been served in any Asian restaurant ever. A new PR! Congrats, I guess... My friends' rolls were more complex than mine, more premium rolls. Yet they didn't turn out to be any better. According to my friend, the cucumber wrap around her roll was so bitter she had to remove it to eat it. She's a sushi lover, she isn't usually picky, and she did her best to eat what she could. If she had to remove sections of the roll to eat it, that's a bad sign... Beyond the food, the service was fine. I had to insist to see the bill at the end however, the waitress would not print it. And after I insisted twice to see the itemized, she realized she had billed for an item we ended up not ordering by mistake, fixed it, and handed the machine back to me. I mean... Thank you, I suppose? I wonder if other diners end up paying for items they didn't order as well since they can't see the item breakdown... I hate to be a Debbie Downer but there's more beyond the bad sushi and the billing issue... The floor leading to the bathroom was sticky. Like, very sticky. Everyone noticed. We're not sure if it's the type of floor that's the problem or if it's just dirty... We didn't inspect it that closely, but that's not a nice feeling to have when you're a customer heading to the bathroom. It raises questions. I'm giving this place two stars instead of one for one reason: Their lady's bathroom is stocked to the max with feminine hygiene products of all kinds. This is extremely thoughtful. As a lady pharmacy, 5 stars. As a restaurant, 1 star. I guess we'll have to settle for a 2-star rating in the end. P.S. Hokkaido, you might want to drop the two AI generated drawings hanging on the back wall of your restaurant. They've got many flaws that betray their "workmanship", including a bunch of amorphous "stuff" in front of the cat eating ramen with two sets of chopsticks instead of one, and a bunch of unidentifiable "foodstuff" that looks like beans and maybe a big potato in a plate in front of what is supposed to be a classical Japanese townscape. I have nothing against AI art per se, but when it's crap, it shouldn't be hung. Why not display sushi art or something? Would make more sense... read more

I was thrilled to try this place, but it seems like things went bad as soon as I read on the door, "temporarily not serving sushi", then to make matters worse they sit us next to the restrooms. Our waitress had a scent of cigarettes on her person and every time she made any movement, I would smell the slate smel of cigarettes. The only option was to order ramen since sushi was out of the question. I spotted the veggie ramen as it looked good and didn't say it contained any eggs. I was excited, but only to be even more disappointed once the food arrived. The veggie ramen broth was thick and creamy consistency. The broth tasted like egg yolk and smelt like eggs. The taste was acquired and disgusting. I had my boyfriend, friend, and brother sample it which they all said it tasted like eggs. I ask the waitress if any egg byproduct was in the ramen. Her response, she doesn't think so. So, the chef comes to the table to confirm that there wasn't any egg byproduct, but instead soybeans. I didn't finish the bowl of ramen. The chef insisted that he can make me anything. He suggested fried rice and I asked him, "without eggs?" He shrugged and said, maybe not. I kept saying, "no it's fine! Please no." The chef insisted and settled on veggie spring rolls. I only eat spring rolls from Thai restaurants because they aren't fried. I insisted against it because I lost my appetite with the ramen. I wasn't going to eat the fried spring rolls and hadn't planned on it. After the ramen sat for a while, it began to smell sour and rotten. Another thing I didn't like was the fact the waitress assumed to ask, that I wouldn't like the boba fruit tea. The kumquat and lemon tea was tasty. I originally had fresh kumquat in Jamaica. Waco's Best Ramen house! Actually the only ramen place in all of Waco TX. Tried most of their broths and it's very rich and tasty, the egg is marinated well and the chashu has a nice char taste. Every time I've been there it's always busy and the service has been consistently good (Jonathan's awesome)! If your visiting Waco or just a student away from Home looking for a ramen place your only choice is Hokkaido but you won't be disappointed it's quite good. read more

Phenomenal food! Tried the house fried rice and it's one of the best I've had (I'm from San Diego where there's amazing Asian food everywhere). My wife tried the Chicken Rich and thought it was very good as well, despite the chicken being dry. She was impressed with every ingredient otherwise. First time visiting Waco and found this place with pretty good ratings and they didn't disappoint - the wait staff was so sweet and great the food was amazing and when there was a slight mix up with my bfs order the waitress got it fixed before I even starting digging into my own food (which was absolutely amazing might I add). The waitress didn't review the order and added an extra egg when we said not to because one person in the group would give up their egg. Honestly one of the best ramens I've had in a hot min. The service was so quick and the inside had a spooky Halloween decor! We ordered the tantanmen ($14.95) and takoyaki ($8). The takoyaki was solid- lacking some mayo and octopus but not bad. The tantanmen bowl was one of the best I've had. The broth was a good level of rich and spicy. What I really liked is that they put the chili paste on the side of the bowl so you can add as much as you wanted. It had so much veggies such as bok choy, bean sprouts, green onion, bamboo shoots (they were all boiled perfectly) and even bigger noodle amount. Compared to Dallas portions- this was HUGE...so come hungry! I'm definitely stopping here again if I ever travel to/from Dallas/Austin. In town for work and had to try out a ramen place that I had been seeing many good reviews! Of course being a ramen enjoyer, I had to come and give it a shot. The server in the front sat us down quickly with no wait. The interior was dark and cozy, with music playing lightly in the background. Now I wanted to try as many items as possible since it'll be a month or two when I come back. Now the karage and cheese rangoons were so good. The stuffed jalapeños were not too good, at least not to me. They were lacking flavor, but visually looked so appealing! Now the actual ramen wasn't bad, it was edible, not spicy at all like showcased. I was expecting something hot when it's showcased that way. Came here for lunch today with my mom and toddler. The hostess was very friendly and sat us at a table very quickly. Our waiter Logan, who told us he started working here a few days ago. Needless to say he was very kind and patient the whole time we ordered and even accommodated my mom who accidentally forgot ask to remove the seaweed paper on our veggie roll, he was very polite and had the chefs remake the roll. He was great and made my first time experience eating here a great one that will make us want to come back. I waited an hour and a half to get my food tonight due to this one worker. Three separate tables of hers also had complaints, not getting their food for longer than us. I had to ask numerous times how my food was looking and only after an hour she thought to check if it went through to the kitchen. Not to mention how many times other servers were completely gone from the floor, leaving customers needing drinks and leaving food sitting out. Hopefully goes well. :) I came in tonight 01/18/25 cause my wife was having pregnancy cravings and ordered a Miso Ramen and a Passion Fruit Boba. I waiting about 15 minutes for my food and the woman who gave me my food was just extremely rude. She just threw my food at me and started walking off without saying a word. I just brushed it off it was late and she was probably tired I started walking off but noticed the 6 dollar Boba tea had no Boba balls in it, so I called her back to ask about it and just said "oh we're out of boba" and just walked away didn't even give me an opportunity to get a refund. Again I brushed it off everyone has bad days well I get home and give my PREGNANT WIFE her food and they gave her the wrong ramen bowl. It was a super spicy ramen that she couldn't even eat without throwing up. So now I have a crying pregnant wife in the living room while I am cooking her some food that she didn't want in the first place and 26 DOLLARS of food in the trash. The broth, WOW, spicy, flavorful, just amazing. The noodles, were good, but stuck together like you would get in a bad Pho' place. It was very fatty 3 pieces of flank decent sized. The rib that supposedly was braised, slow cooked fell off the bone, was anything but. It was tough dry and i probably use three toothpicks to get that beef jerky (slightly exaggerating) out of my teeth. We ordered the tempura shrimp appetizer. That was really good. The tempura was just right not doughy and crispy throughout. That did not disappoint at all. I wish they would give two sauces instead of 1... Just a thought My bride ordered the spider roll. It was surprisingly small. Best way my wife described it was... Rice taco with crispy crap that had the impression of octopus or something but didn't really care for it. Delicious food and friendly service. My family and I went there for dinner and we ordered spicy beef ramen added eggs, tonkotsu ramen, fried calamari, gyoza, and many cha mochi ice cream. The spicy beef ramen with a big chunk of rib is tasty. I was afraid the soup could be just plain salty and spicy BUT that's not the case. The soup was flavorful. They offered mild, hot, and fiery spicy levels. Mild is just a touch of spicy and hot is more like mild. The waitress already mentioned to us they will not be too spicy. I can tolerate spicy food and I do not mind "hot" level of spicy so I don't keep sweating the whole time. You can try fiery if you can tolerate spicy food. I will definitely order the spicy beef ramen again. Fried calamari is a little spicy as they sprinkled some chili powder on top. I assume you can tell them not to sprinkle the chili powder. The gyozas are good. The matcha mochi ice-cream is tasty and you can taste the matcha flavor. read more

My girlfriend and I came for dinner and our waiter was not very attentive at all. First off we ordered the crab ragoons and my gf bit into like idek a weird piece of onion or something that definitely wasn't supposed to be in the food. Then we ordered beef fried rice. That literally had almost no beef in it despite it being an up charge. As well as when we ordered drinks, my gf wanted a diet coke, our waiter offered a diet Pepsi because that's all they had and told us he wouldn't charge for it...he charged us for it anyways at the end. We ordered two rolls that also were OK. I didn't touch one at all, and our waiter saw and didn't care nor did he ever check up on us. We waited like 10 minutes alone just looking at him on his phone talking with all the other servers ignoring us. I had to get up and walk over and ask for the check.Our server apologized for the wait and said "Sorry its never this slow so we dont usually get to all hangout and talk." So he ignored us to sit there and chat with his coworkers on their phones. Anyways, he came over and our bill came to about $57 before tip for us to not even get bare minimum service and not even touch our food. My family and I are very excited about this place! Waco needs more sushi restaurants and good Asian food! We were excited to try their sushi but, unfortunately, sushi was not available when we visited. We were told they are awaiting a final inspection before they can serve sushi and they won't likely have it for 1-3 months. We still decided to give them a shot and try some apps and ramen. First off, they are still very much in a "soft opening" phase as, in addition to the sushi, there were a few items on the menu that weren't available like the jalapeño poppers and a house fried rice entree. I also overheard the server telling another patron that the lemonades were not available. That said, the food that we did order was good, for the most part. We ordered CRAB RANGOONS-- very tasty and perfectly cooked. You could actually see and taste the "crab" in these unlike other places. EDAMAME-- basic, tasty edamame that we, and especially our toddler, enjoyed. They have a spicy edamame I might try when I'm sans toddler. PORK GYOZA-- Prepared well with a nice sear and flavorful filling. Dipping sauce was well-balanced. CHICKEN KARAAGE-- Good flavor and moist chicken, but we noticed there was a lot of breading (many of the pieces were just breading or a tiny amount of chicken and thick breading). The pieces we did have that had a good balance of both were pretty tasty. Loved the sauce that came with this. I ordered this with a bowl of white rice as my meal since they didn't have a couple of the other things I wanted. The rice was a bit on the dry side. TONKATSU SHOYU-- DELICIOUS! The broth had such a wonderful, rich flavor. The chasu pork was moist and delicious-- only critique would be a cleaner-looking slice. The texture of the noodles was great, as well as the bamboo shoots. They know what they're doing!! My husband would have cleaned the bowl if we didn't have so many appetizers. GARLIC TONKATSU-- This is supposed to pretty much be the same as the "TONKATSU SHOYU," only with a different soup base. I know this has "garlic" in the name, and we're garlic fans, but it was a bit too intense for us. My son ordered this and said he wouldn't order again and would choose the "TONKATSU SHOYU" next time. Excited to try the other Ramen dishes as they are clearly well-crafted! HOKKAIDO BOBA MILK TEA-- Really good flavor-- the subtle floral notes were nice. Boba had good flavor and texture. Only critique was that it was super sweet and our server said there isn't a way to adjust the sweetness. If they could, it'd be perfect! Excited to return when they have sushi. Glimpsed the sushi menu and it looks like they're going to have some good offerings and, if they make sushi like they make ramen, it's going to be good!
