Our friends are getting married, we should get married! I mean look, I got married! What's even crazier is that people come to Asheville to get married and throw awesome weddings that they can post all over instagram because they look so damn cool and everything is perfect and it's got that wonderful and charming handmade rustic class. So yeah, I think I'm up at about 5 to 6 weddings a year, which is great. But when I spot the bartenders of Cordial and Craft as I approach a wedding reception I'm ready to high five everyone within a 30 foot radius. When it comes to charm, class, and presentation nothing beats the bartenders from Cordial and Craft. I'm having a tough time even figuring out how to communicate just how great they are. You know those pictures you see on pinterest of drinks that make your mouth water, that have been custom designed for the event, with cute straws and beautiful colors? That's what we're talking about here. When you go to a wedding that has chosen Cordial and Craft to provide their bar program for the evening it's basically a sure fire sign that the event planner/bride and groom/venue has put great thought and care into each element of the event. Nevertheless the road into the parking lot is safe and easily passable by typical cars SUVs cans or trucks with either two or four wheel drive. There are no rest rooms or food so you must bring your own food and water. The path is firm and slopes upward gently becoming rocky with prominent tree roots. The 65 foot high big falls is spectacular. It is not a straight fall down. Many deaths have occurred as visitors attempt to dive from the top of the falls. Elk falls ranks in the top 3 waterfall related deaths. The rocks surrounding the first pool are beautiful but have a slippery surface. This park recently reopened after extensive restoration following Hurricane Helene. On the first day it opened there was a fatality of a falls jumper. Despite these challenges this park is a great example of the outdoors in nearly natural and breathtaking state.

The falls are closed as of late April 2026. Road is blocked about 2 miles out from town.read more

They crap all over the place. The first 10 feet of sand is basically raked kitty litter, with duck poo instead of cat poo. The water and beach smell like poo. The beach (above the poo line) would be fine without the smell, as the sand is pretty clean and fine. Maybe the rest of the lake is clean, but it's hard to tell from the beach. Eww. The staff is friendly but not assertive enough. We went during COVID restrictions and half the people refused masks inside and none of the staff enforced anything.

We managed to snag the top loft around the Holiday season. To top it off, this place is pet-friendly, no questions asked and no pet deposit. This is an incredible perk for families traveling with their fur babies. Because they recognized that pets are family too, we took extra care to clean up after our pets on the property when they did their business outdoors. Not sure if they care about dog poop on the land, but may we suggest a small station for doggie poop bags? Also something to consider, we frequently saw loose dogs from the surrounding area running on the property and road, so we recommend being aware of this if your pet doesn't do well around loose dogs. Our cabin was approximately 600 square feet, had a gas fireplace (awesome!!!!!!), and we were right on the edge of the Watauga River. The land surrounding the cabin is lovely and the sound of the rushing river water is absolutely refreshing. The cabin comes with everything you would need for your stay: extra towels and bedding, extra spices, condiments, and coffee, a nice laundry facility on the ground floor, firewood for the camp fire outside, and an awesome grill and outdoor facility with plenty of seating on the river's edge. Our dogs loved romping in the lake. The only thing that the cabin didn't have was shampoo/conditioner, but there was plenty of soap in the bathroom and kitchen. The water heater worked great, so there was no issue with hot showers or hot water in the kitchen sink. Once you get the fireplace roaring, it's wonderful being able to settle in with a hot mug of coffee, free fast wifi, and satellite TV. Everything during our stay was perfect. We would definitely book this cabin again in the future for the holidays.
