Hollywood Boulders is honestly a very solid gym, especially considering the amount of space it has to work with. It does a surprisingly efficient job balancing climbing, fitness equipment, locker room amenities, and overall flow, which is more than I can say for its sibling location in Burbank. The climbing is the main reason to come here. The problems are skillfully designed, thoughtful, and consistently more challenging than what you'll find at places like Verdigo. The setting feels intentional, technical, and rewarding, so whether you're trying to push grades or just get a quality session in, the walls are usually worth the trip. The vibe is great, and the staff are awesome; friendly, helpful, and good at keeping the place feeling welcoming even when it's busy. And realistically, in this part of town, it is going to be busy. This is a densely populated Hollywood-adjacent area with a lot of people who want to use this gym, so the fact that it functions as well as it does is impressive. The biggest downside is parking. The parking lot is abysmally tiny, and unless the gym is unusually empty, you should basically assume parking in the lot is not going to be in the cards. There is street parking, but I don't love relying on it here. The neighborhood is otherwise dense and active, but the abandoned buildings (including the giant one literally across the street) make parts of the immediate area feel like they've been left to languish, and that can make street parking feel uncomfortable or potentially unsafe depending on the time of day.  Tbh, I'm a huge fan of public transit so I'll just walk here from the Hollywood/Vine station and avoid parking altogether! For any points lost to parking disadvantages, HB regains them for proximity to transit! (BTW: LA Metro is $1.75 fare...i think that's how much it costs just to OPEN the Uber app these days) There are also three treadmills, and somehow they are always being used. If you come here, please don't use them so I can stick to my training plan plz (haha). But seriously it's the only thing in the gym always at max capacity, so I hope we might get a 4th one of these days... This is still a Touchstone gym, so I'm not gonna lie to you or pretend that this isn't the most corporate climbing entity in California. Again, everyone who actually operates the locations for touchstone is incredible and wonderful and the reason that you should come back. But whoever is running the budget is absolutely off their rocker. I have been a touchdown number for the better half of the decade now, and I have to tell you that it feels like every year I am getting ripped off more. This is the only gym that has raised their membership fees multiple times in a year, but at no point does it feel like that actually went to improvements; if anything, the gyms look more like they need investment than ever. (Touchstone, you WILL get more members if you are reasonably priced - you are pricing ppl out, and other gyms are NOT). So with that said, if you are considering joining, I strongly recommend that you never ever pay an initiation fee under any circumstances. If you can't negotiate it in person, wait until there is a promotion. Do not give this company any more money than you need to, because they are going to treat you the exact same way. /rant That said, at HB specifically, there's really not much to complain about. Hollywood Boulders is a strong, reliable climbing gym with great staff, great setting, and a great vibe; just plan your parking strategy, guard your wallet during signup, and please, for my sake, leave one treadmill open. read more

I've never bouldered before and this place was great for beginners and advanced climbers. The staff were friendly and patient with my questions. You can borrow shoes and a bag of chalk. It was really busy on the Wed evening, but people are respectful and will wait their turn and not crowd you on the wall. Since I was a beginner, I stuck to the easiest climbs of which there were few, but enough for me to spend a good 1-2 hours there. It was a bit intimidating watching the other climbers but people are pretty nice. Some tried to give us advice on holding positions and stuff. Afterwards, my forearms were SORE. TIP: Go with freshly cut nails! Even though my nails were short, each nail still got really jacked up and ragged climbing the walls. Don't even think about nail polish. read more

The love for the sport can last a lifetime, and having encouraging, accommodating, and supportive staff makes a world of difference in your journey. So, apparently, if chased by a pack of hungry wolves it's highly unlikely that I'd be able to climb myself to safety. Sad, nothing like feeling your hands and forearms still fatigued nearly a week later and is that big toe strained slightly? This summarizes my reacquaintance with bouldering after 10+ years away from the sport. I couldn't find my two pairs of shoes or chalk bag before heading out so I had to use the heavily worn rentals (big yuck). Am I deterred or dismayed by this recent reality check? Hell no! It's a long slow path to recovery from illness, surgeries, and getting older. Nevertheless, I remembered why I took an interest in the sport and even did some top-roping on location, and leading, as well as bouldering in Joshua Tree. Back to square one, I'm trying to decide if retesting the waters is worth a membership. If I lived closer to Hollywood Bouldering I'd consider it. The facility is nice, two weight training areas, exercise bikes upstairs, and TONS of routes for every skill level, especially me... lots of V0 paths. It's very spacious inside and I enjoyed the scene. The retail area is like a pro shop, and there's even a small area at the front counter to fix yourself up if you slip and get cuts or blisters. While I only lasted an hour or so I enjoyed attempts on at least six routes, some more successful than others, and quit while I was ahead. read more

Overall this gym is not bad. I'm giving it 1 star because as someone that comes when the gym opens (6:30am weekdays and 9am weekends), roughly 20% of the time, the opener is not on time. Whether it's a scheduling issue or they overslept, I don't know, but they're often 30min to hours late. This is especially annoying when I force myself to wake up early to try and get a workout in before work. Everyone would rather sleep in but we make an effort to go to the gym early because of life obligations and responsibilities. It's incredibly frustrating when you're on a time crunch and the business doesn't open when they say they would. If this happens once or twice it's excusable, sure, but this happens all the time. I've talked to the manager, he's apologetic and assures that changes will be made but it keeps happening. I don't know what else to do but to voice my frustrations here. Touchstone has also raised membership pricing a few times since I've joined a little over a year ago, but the quality of my experience has gotten worse. I love going rock climbing at Hollywood boulders and it's super fun because they have all different types of walls for different levels. They always change up the walls frequently as well. The staff there are super friendly and there is also a section with a gym and sauna. They also have so many different climbs for every skill level. On Sun, Oct 22, a credible shooter threat by a gym member was reported to Hollywood Boulders mangement. Staff were unaware until Wed, Oct 25, after which the staff walked out. Touchstone management refused to publically notify members, actively censored comments on instagram, and did not email a statement to members Novemeber 1st (conveniently after the deadline passed for members cancel/freeze their November membership dues. Sender One, Stronghold, Hanger 18, are all better gyms with more integrity than touchstone. read more

Warning! I hurt myself on the broken workout equipment seen in the image I have posted along with the review. Worst part is I talked to some workers after it happened to explain my situation and they told me they know the machine is broken and the owners refuse to buy a new one or fix the one they have. Apparently they say even though the machine is broken it's still "usable." Well folks looks like I got this negligence case in the bag because I hurt myself on this broken but "usable" piece of gym equipment. I really don't know what the this old rickety machine Touchstone Climbing Gyms refuses to fix or replace is called, but a quick google shows a new rogue glute hamstring developer (similar) only being $725 which means it only costs a month of fees from 9 members. Touchstone Climbing has much more than 9 members paying $80 a month to come to this gym as well as their many others so they could easily afford to fix this but seem to choose not to (according to their own employees). So basically Touchstone Climbing is like, "we know you all pay us money to provide a top quality gym experience, but we'd rather you get hurt on our broken gym equipment instead of fixing it or replacing it." You know when the pandemic first hit and Touchstone tried to get us members to continue paying the monthly membership fee despite the fact that the gym was closed, I thought that was bad. But this is even worse! Whatever the old rickety machine is called, it should not be in this gym at all because it's an extreme liability. I should know because I got hurt on it. Basically none of the twist knobs work to change the settings on the machine for your height so you are stuck with whatever setting its on (which is very bad). On top of that it wobbles and is completely unstable when you try to use it. That's how I hurt myself. It wobbled the wrong way, my muscle strained because the settings weren't right and I fell off the machine hurting myself in the process. I'm yelp elite and I get 90,000 views of my reviews every month so even if Touchstone Gyms doesn't fix or replace this machine I will have done my due diligence of warning people not to use the machine. Honestly though if they don't replace the machine I will end my membership in December because I will have concrete evidence about how the Touchstone leadership feels about their paying customers. Tried bouldering for the first time last weekend! I took an intro to bouldering class here where they walked us through safety, learning how to fall and trying out a few different climbs. I had a lot of fun and the instructor was really helpful! A day pass is included with the class so I got to stay for a few more hours and climb with my friends. There's also a weight training area as well as different classes provided such as yoga. They have climbing shoes you can rent as well as chalk bags. Will definitely be coming back! read more

I've been a regular at Hollywood Boulders for about two months now, and this place is a 5 star bouldering gym with a 1 star parking situation. I live about an 8 minute drive away, but there have been days where I've circled every adjacent block for over 20 minutes before ultimately giving up and parking on Santa Monica Blvd across from Hollywood Forever Cemetery where I also seem to leave my poise and patience to die. Luckily, the gym is a great place to blow off some steam after becoming frustrated with LA parking. Given that I've only been climbing regularly for about two months, I'm still quite the neophyte to the climbing scene, so feel free to take my beta with a grain of salt. But in my experience, HoBo always seems to have plenty of great routes to keep you busy, and they're swapped out at a reasonable rate. While I can't speak for the hardcore climbers, this place is very suitable for beginner and intermediate boulderers. While I haven't yet taken advantage of any of the classes or events, Touchstone seems to offer a number of ways to meet people beyond the canon of organically meeting people by simply being at the gym. My experience with the climbing community (and active communities in general) has been very welcoming, and the staff is normally friendly and helpful. Overall, this place rocks. read more

Verdigo Boulders is my home gym but I wanted to give Hollywood Boulders a try to see what it was like. I came by on a Sunday morning and wasn't able to find parking in their small lot but thankfully found a spot right across the street. The gym was clean and had a good vibe overall. What I liked about this gym is that they have quite a few opportunities to "top out" your climb which I hadn't done before. I finally came here with a friend who had been asking me to go as her guest pass (PS: she gets one guest pass a month - not sure if there are different tiers of memberships that offers more). It was easy to get registered (via iPad) and shoe rentals are $4. This was my first time bouldering, and thank goodness there were plenty of V0 options. The atmosphere was chill and not intimidating even though there were people who were really good!! The lights were also off for the majority of the time we were there, and I enjoyed it actually. There was enough natural light coming in from the windows that you could see what you are doing. Also as a first timer, I suggest coming with a friend that knows what to do. It's very on-your-own sort of deal, and she was great at walking me through the basics. I'm not sure if there's more support for single first timers - I'd hope/assume so?? I'd be lost if I didn't follow her lead. Oh, and she brought her own chalk bag - again, I'm not sure if that's provided otherwise. What's also great about this gym (again, I haven't gone to others) is that there are weights and treadmills. I hosted a corporate event at Hollywood Boulders and it was the easiest thing in the world! Not the Bouldering (not even close) but the staff and making of arrangements was so smooth and organized. I'd highly recommend hosting group events here. We arrived at 545p for their 6p Intro to Boudlering class and I think everyone had an amazing time. It was a really fun and challenging activity. Something I could see myself doing more of since I love a good challenge. My body was working in ways it never has, using muscles I didn't know existed. They provided chalk which was much needed, my palms were sweaty just watching some of these athletes climb these walls and work these problems. I left saying "I've got 99 problems but a V0 ain't one!" There's also a small gym upstairs with some pieces of equipment and weights. I really like the idea of a day pass, you can come and go as you please. I can see myself getting my short runs and lift done in the gym area of the club and then using the main climbing walls for additional workout. My hands and forearms were super sore after, it took really until the next afternoon to feel a bit recovered but it was a really nice experience. The parking however, was a hellish nightmare - we parked blocks away and walked over (a little walkin' never killed anyone, so you'll be ok). Super fun place for an adult party or corporate event. My friend has a monthly membership, so I was able to go on her guest pass. We got there right when it opened on a weekday, and it was not crowded at all. I really enjoyed my experience! There is a range of difficulty throughout the gym, and there were plenty of beginner (v0) paths for me to climb. This gym also has exercise equipment and classes daily. Didn't try any of this out on my visit, but it was cool to see this was an option. There is a free parking lot on the side of the gym. Plenty of parking, although by the time we left, the lot was pretty full with only a few open spaces. You can rent climbing shoes for $4 and a chalk bag for $1. I came here on a Saturday morning right at 10am and the parking lot situation was great! It was completely full when I left at noon though, and the surrounding streets look REALLY terrible to try to park on (heavy traffic, few options). I loved the weekend morning crowd - super quiet and peaceful climbing time for me. The front desk was really friendly and helpful. The bathrooms felt pretty clean and not too many people passing through. To compare to other Touchstone gyms ... Cliffs of ID is way larger with top roping & lead walls, but also has way more people. Cliffs of ID is currently the only Touchstone LA gym with top roping/lead climbs. Space at Hollywood Boulders felt less cramped than LA Boulders and Verdugo (but again, I was experiencing a much quieter early morning weekend). They have a nice covered outdoor patio sort of area, I think, and I kind of like the layout of the cardio equipment (upstairs) and weight equipment (downstairs) - whereas I hate the layout in Cliffs of ID and LA Boulders (I don't even remember if there's cardio or weight equipment at Verdugo). Because of the parking situation, I cannot imagine making this my regular gym though. read more

I've been attempting to try all of the "Touchstone" gyms in California before I have to give up my membership, so I decided to visit Hollywood Boulders on a whim one day wanting to see how cool of a gym it is. I did not climb, nor do I usually climb, so I will only say that there is a ton of bouldering but not really any top-rope. Aside from the climbing aspect, here's what I thought: 1) Cardio equipment: about the same amount as other Touchstone gyms, but in a separate area upstairs, away from the weights, where there is much more space. 2) Weights: Slightly larger space and amount of equipment than Cliffs of Id, including a GHD (glute-ham developer), quite a few bumper plates and bars, and two separate spaces for squatting/deadlifting/oly. There are also a couple plyo boxes. All in all, a better space than Cliffs of Id, but not as good as Ironworks or Great Western. 3) Stretching: LOTS of space to stretch upstairs without having a ton of people stepping around/over you. Quite a bit of stretching equipment. 4) Chill-out area: Not much of one. Unlike other Touchstone gyms that have lots of tables and chairs, there is very little of that sort of thing here. Not a huge deal though: this is a gym, not a coffee shop. 5) Cleanliness: Very clean all-around, including large, spotless bathrooms and showers. 6) Parking: Small private lot. Be warned: it gets crowded later in the day. read more

Parking lot is super small and we had to find parking in the street. The employees were not friendly. They just stared at you for a bit before helping. The gym is pretty spacious and the restrooms were clean. I did like that they had an area to hang out in. I loved the routes and the height. I would recommend it if you love bouldering. read more

This place will work every muscle that you have. The great part is that your workout is up to you. You can choose whatever route you want to go up the side, across the roof area horizontally. Or straight up vertically. They offer free parking, their hours of operation offers flexible options. The staff is very friendly, helpful and professional. Came in with the two young boys that I nanny and bought day passes for all of us. We had such a great time climbing (or attempting to anyway). For starters, the facility is very clean and well kept. The locker room was equipped with towels and an assortment of hygiene products. The gym floor and cubby area was also well maintained. No free weights or anything laying around. Furthermore, the staff was extremely kind and accommodating. When the woman working the front desk found out that it was our first time visiting, she graciously decided to waive the shoe rental fee. The day pass rate seemed really reasonable. It was $60.00 total for all three of us. The nice part is that you have unlimited time and access on a day pass. They offer plenty of rocks walls, a small weight lifting area, and some group fitness classes. We only used the rock walls this time but it's nice to know that there are other options to try. I probably wouldn't come back solo because rock climbing isn't my choice exercise but I'll definitely bring the kids back. They played for about 90 minutes and loved every minute of it. Also free parking next door but it was looking very full while we were there. I imagine it might fill during peak hours. read more

Touchstone gyms! I came in super excited to climb today, I walk in to Hollywood boulders & guy at the counter completely destroys that feeling for me. I don't feel welcome here at all. It's my first time at this location, but I've climbed at Touchstone gyms before, & Verdigo was super welcoming. When I told them it was my first time visiting their gym, they gave me a tour & showed me all their amenities. I can't say the same for Hollywood boulders - I let the guy at the counter know it's my first time here & asked how to get upstairs. No tour, no welcoming behavior, all he said was, "It's a climbing gym. FIGURE IT OUT." Wow, thanks bro. Way to treat your customer, who also happens to be an REI employee. What an awesome place to get a great workout. As far as the walls go, this place is enormous, with plenty of space no matter how crowded it may get. I came during the day on a weekday as well as the weekend where there were 10x as many people and still had no problem doing all the climbs I wanted to. Plenty of levels and many of them at that for everyone from beginners like me to V29348294 levelers who are basically like bats hanging upside down from one stubby hold. Also, their mats are SUPER cushiony and even falling from the highest point is no problem. They also have all your weights, kettlebells, bicycles, treadmills, rowing machines etc you could ask for to warm up or to get the full workout. Lots of lockers, showers and even a sauna. They seem to also have yoga classes which is a huge plus. Day pass is 20 bucks (you can go in and out), shoes are 4 and chalk bag w/ chalk is 1. And they have a parking lot which is great (albeit on weekends it gets really packed it seems). Really like this gym - lots of different walls to climb and I feel like the assortment/variety of paths is a good range. As a beginner/n00b, there were plenty of V1/V0s to try since it's an all-bouldering gym, aka not rock climbing. We had a large group come in after work since it was a company outing and we were assigned an employee who would help provide an introduction to bouldering. Unfortunately, I didn't get his name, but he was awesome! The range of skill level varied in our group, so I appreciate that he was patient and accommodating for everyone. He stayed with our entire group for a good while, watching everyone and giving us pointers on climbing best practices. He was also very closely watching us to figure out what we were doing wrong or inefficiently; he was never condescending and very encouraging. Overall, I felt like everyone walked away more confident and less sore than we would have been if we hadn't received pointers on how to climb better using parts of our bodies.
