Large lap pool with flag markers on both ends. I was using goggles and was able to see that the pool was very clean. Lifeguards and other employees walking around watching what is going on. Some people were getting swim lessons. The lap swimmers I talked with were for the most part nice and into swimming. All the many lanes were were busy this Sunday and you shared them with 2 or 3 other swimmers. Shallow lanes are 3.5 feet and deep water lanes are 11 feet and have a diving board. Parking is free and easy a few steps from the entrance. It costs $1.00 for over 60 and $4.00 for under 60. Cash only. Negatives: The men's locker room and showers are acceptable, clean, but not nice. I brought my own lock and locked up my stuff in the locker. The shower was a bit too hot and you can't change the temps--it's set. I was told that some homeless come here just to take showers but they have to pay to get in like everyone--they just don't swim. There was one homeless guy with a couple of carry-on suitcases in the locker room getting dressed after his shower--didn't really bother anyone. I stopped in here a couple of weeks ago during the week just to look at the pool first in business attire. The woman at the front desk was very "snippy" and would not let me in to just look at the facilities for 5 minutes--kept asserting that "no tours" of the pool facility are allowed! She said, "Just look at pictures of the pool on the wall in the lobby!" So I then just suggested how about I pay to use to pool and I tour myself about for a few minutes. She grabbed my money, didn't give me a ticket and called a guy over to keep a watch on me while I walked into the locker room and pool area. The guy was very nice and answered a lot of my questions. There were only 3 people in the pool--very empty. She did leave a "bad taste" in my mouth. I can see having an "attitude" if I came in looking grubby, but I was dressed up with a white shirt and dress pants and shoes.

They're not trying to talk to anyone from what I can tell. If you don't want that situation move to the desert counties.

My son loved that his coach encouraged him to do things that he thought he couldn't do only to gain confidence once he did it. When I think back on…read moreour experience, I want to kick myself for sticking with it so long and wasting so much time and money. Most swim schools teach water safety first. They want to make sure your kid knows how to save her/himself in case of an accident. This school does not have that philosophy. Swim Method: The first thing they do is to strap a back floatie on your child. And no matter the size, age, strength of your child, they will spend the entire 50 minutes of your (group) lesson (40 min if private) swimming full lengths of the pool (about 25 meters long). Because the child has a back floatie strapped on, s/he never learns to actually float or move independently in the water. They proceed to teach the kids the correct form for moving arms without having taught them how to actually stay afloat. It's a bizarre method. One without much success. As I said previously, in the five months we were here, my son gained no skills whatsoever. In fact, when we went swimming on a vacation he was still scared to try actually swimming (without a floatie). I never really saw any other beginner progress either. Everyone he started with stayed in the floatie the entire time we were there. And this is with lessons TWICE a week! Which is actually the minimum you can sign up for when signing up for group lessons. Instructors: The head instructor is female but all of the other instructors are young men I would guess to be in their early to mid 20s (there are three of them). Two of them have been there a long time and one started this past summer. They aren't very warm or nurturing by any means. One actually yells. A LOT. The other two aren't as bad but still no warm fuzzies from these instructors. At the end of our last session my son tried tell his instructor that he could swim a bit without a floatie (no thanks to this school; he made a lot of progress with my husband) and the instructor smirked then told him to try. When my son faltered a bit, he laughed and said, see you don't know how to swim! Umm, what?! This is how you teach young kids? By making fun of them and discouraging them?! Despite having a couple lessons left, I never returned after this incident. Facilities: The pool is heavily chlorinated. You must take shoes off to walk around in the pool area. And it is steamy hot in the pool room in the summer. Think: windows, semi-heated pool, no ventilation. As a mom, sitting there twice a week for 50 min lessons was a special level of hell. There are four showers, 4-5 changing stalls, and a hot tub that all of the kids and instructors utilize before and after lessons. Chairs against the walls for all the parents waiting for their kids. Pricing: If you are taking group lessons, you have to sign up for a minimum of two weekday sessions per week. You can sign up for up to three sessions per week. Saturday classes cost more. 12 group lessons = $240 (2 per week -- wkday) 36 group lessons = $600 (3 per week -- wkday) 8 group lessons= $240 (1 per week -- Saturdays) Parking: In lot, validated Yay or Nay: If you couldn't tell, it's a definitely NO for me. It might work better for older kids who already know how to swim and just need a place to swim laps for exercise. It's not an effective swim school for beginners or younger children.

Like most community pools, it's in a beautiful neighborhood of Burbank and has some playgrounds and tennis courts near the pool. The locker rooms are kept up really well and the pool's temperature is kept at just the right level of cold and the chlorine level doesn't feel drastic as some places. The staff are great and helpful. The day rate depends on if you live in Burbank or not ($6-8) for lap swim and keep their schedule updated on their website. Bring your own swim gear as they are not provided by the aquatic center! Depending on time of day and when you go, the lap swim can be metered or by yards, as the layout of the pool can change (with kids swim, open swim, aerobics) nearby. Theres also a nice outdoor area for family events or kids birthday parties. Theres street side parking and they have a good size parking lot but it's pretty busy on weekends; people leave frequently and usually are waiting for your parking spot when you head out! A local who has been coming here for years encouraged me to try Mccambridge Recreation Pool (which I have yet to)!

I am currently taking a swimming class here in the evenings and the instructors are great! One thing to note: the class right before ours is little kids (6-7 yrs old), get there at the right time (10 minutes before your class) or the locker room will be filled with about 20 girls screaming and laughing and occupying your space. :) Walking in to the pool and walk straight into the locker room. There's a lifeguard at the desk, they can issue you a towel; I bring my own. The locker room: It's small, mostly assigned lockers, there are a few empty ones. I mainly just bring my bag out with me where I can keep an eye on it during class. There are about 3 bathroom stall, 3 shower stalls (no curtain) and no hair dryer nor large mirrors. If you come here before work, be prepared. There is a bathing suit dryer that's somewhat helpful. Theses are just things you find at a gym. Overall I really like this pool!

Tucked on the side of Kaufman (at one point, the "Women's Gym") on North Campus right by the Sunset/Westwood Plaza turnaround and Lot 4, North Pool is the older, smaller pool versus SAC or the other swim pools available to those with a UCLA Recreation membership, but it has it's own charm and group of regulars. Lots of sunshine, even in the winter months, and a lot more mellow than other open rec spots. Bring a towel; towel service is phasing out/almost gone at this point.
