Conrad Zurich, owner of the Hollywood Theatre in Mattydale, started Hollywood Theatre in June 1966, with a Sidney Poitier twin bill: "A Patch of Blue" and "Lilies of the Field." The price then was $1.75 for a ticket, which stayed that way for 40 years, before being raised to a whopping (sarcasm) $3.00 a ticket. The Hollywood is unlike any other theaters in the area. With its postcard-worthy marquee, brightly lit lobby and a vast expanse of seating darkness, it claims a high status of Central New York cinema Americana -- and it stands as the last hold-out among movie houses still devoted solely to their builders' intent: Good guys beating bad guys on a giant screen. Hollywood remains true to a niche market of moviegoers willing to wait an extra few weeks to see recent films that have outlived their sell-by dates in the mall cineplexes, at a price that can't be beat. Aside from their $3 ticket price, they sell the usual movie treats - popcorn, candy, soda, Icees, etc. My wife and I have been going to Hollywood for years. It's perfect for a cheap date night, or simply to check out movies you're not 100% sold on without having to pay ridiculous theatre prices, if you can wait a couple weeks until they exit usual movie theatres. Also a great way to catch a movie you didn't get to see in time in theatres, or catching a second showing of a movie you know you like. Hollywood used to have uncomfortable chairs and sticky floors, but recently added brand new comfortable leather recliner seats, which just makes it even more of an awesome experience. Screen and sound quality are great, employees are friendly. My only gripe with them is I do remember them having one of the more disgusting public bathrooms I've ever been in, BUT I have not been in their bathrooms in years and I'm not sure if they've been remodeled at all. All in all, it's a great value for a fun time! Great little local business.

Arrived early for the Fantastic Four. $2 movie, great popcorn, and choice of seats. Love this place. One if the best deals in town!

I love a good deal and you cannot find one much better than this. Recently released movies are only $2 a ticket. It is cheaper on Tuesday nights and slightly more expensive when viewing a movie in 3D. Even though it is an old theatre, they keep it pretty clean and the seats are fairly comfortable. The have great popcorn and you can get a large popcorn and large soda for $10. Each comes with a free refill. We always share amongst us. Biggest complaint I have is with the bathroom. I have no idea what the men's is like, but the women's restroom is very, very tiny and difficult to navigate. Otherwise, it is a great value!

I can't believe after all these years I haven't ever wrote a review about this awesome theatre. So pretty much this theatre plays moves that are still newer, but not as new as your regular theatre. So today Power Rangers is playing, but it has been out for a month or so. The cool part about waiting to come here instead of the normal movies, is that they have steeply discounted tickets. You pay about two bucks a person! That's awesome! The drinks and food is pretty fair too. I get my medium Cherry Pepsi for a lil over 3 bucks and you can get all kinds of snacks and what not for almost half the price of the normal movies. What really reminded me to write my review is that when I came tonight. I noticed a huge difference. They updated their seats to these super comfy recliner chairs that are leather!!! (See pictures) That's awesome! Remember guys, this is a small theatre with super low ticket costs, having these kind of high quality seats is unheard of. Anyways, if you haven't been here yet, make the trip! You will not regret it.

Can't beat the ticket prices! Perfect for those flicks you want to see on the big screen but don't want to sell an organ to see.

Dollar for dollar (because it's only a few dollars ), this is a great local theater. I can't wait to see the new seats they put in.

It went back, and I couldn't get it back down. At all. It was awful! Then, the last time we went, we tried to eat some food at the bar before going, and for 2 people it was $75 and all we got was a pizza and an appetizer sampler thing and a couple drinks. Whack.

The theater is clean, the seats are super comfortable, and the picture and sound quality are top-tier. I usually bring my own throw blanket since theaters can be a little cool, and it just adds to the comfort. In my opinion, the food is reasonably priced--comparable to what you'd pay at a typical restaurant--and they offer plenty of options. I usually order the chicken salad, and my nieces love the wings and quesadillas. I know some people complain about the prices, but I truly believe you're paying for convenience and the overall experience. The staff is always kind and accommodating, and even the guests are generally pleasant. Out of all my visits, I've only had one issue with a food order. I had to walk near the kitchen to get assistance, which caused me to miss a bit of the film. But in their defense, it was during a very busy showing for a popular movie, and they were super accommodating once I got help. Matinee tickets are typically around $7, and if you're a loyalty member, you can sometimes get them for $6. I've heard Tuesdays are even cheaper, though I'm not sure of the exact discount. One great tip: purchase your tickets online! You can also order your food in advance, select a delivery time, and have it brought right to your seat. All in all, I highly recommend Movie Tavern if you're looking for a cozy, enjoyable movie-going experience with good food and solid service.
