To speak about Teardrop Lounge, I should probably start with this: Ladies and gentlemen, I present my favorite cocktail bar. Not the best -- I'm not arrogant enough to claim that. I haven't been to every cocktail bar in Portland, and saying something is the best usually says more about your lack of experience than your conviction. But favorite? That I can stand behind. And I want to get that out of the way early, because of the amount of praise I'm about to pour on this place -- fully earned, completely intentional. The biggest crime here is that I only discovered it two weeks ago, after living in Portland for a year. It had been recommended to me countless times, and I ignored it. A mistake. A painful one. But now that I've found it, I don't plan on making that mistake again. I'm not typically an Old Fashioned drinker. In fact, I usually hate them. But somewhere between curiosity and too many episodes of Mad Men, I decided to try one anyway -- fully expecting to confirm my bias. Instead, it completely flipped me. Bright, almost citrus-forward in a way that felt unusual but entirely intentional. Balanced, smooth, just enough burn to remind you what you're drinking without overwhelming it. It was the first time I actually understood the appeal. I'm pretty sure I grew a few chest hairs that night. That alone would've been impressive. But it didn't stop there. The space is beautiful -- clean, intentional, but not cold. The staff are excellent: personable, engaged, and most importantly, authentic. Not scripted, not performative. The kind of people you actually want to talk to, and hopefully, eventually be on a first-name basis with. Now, all of that gets it close to a perfect score. But what pushes it over the edge -- what makes this place stick -- is the White Russian. One of the first drinks I ever had. My dad's drink. Not because of The Big Lebowski -- that came later -- but because it's just always been his thing. And at some point, it became mine too. Typically, when bars try to "elevate" a White Russian, they ruin it. They overthink it. Swap ingredients, tweak ratios, add unnecessary flair. And more often than not, it ends in disappointment. Teardrop does the opposite. They respect it -- but refine it. The coffee liqueur actually tastes like coffee. The heavy cream is properly integrated, not just dumped on top. The vodka -- whatever they're using -- is clean, present, and perfectly measured. There's a subtle complexity to it without losing what makes the drink what it is. It's the best White Russian I've ever had. No hesitation. I've gone back twice just to make sure it wasn't a fluke. It wasn't. If someone asked me what my death row drink would be -- this specific cocktail, from this specific bar, is in the conversation. Easily. Teardrop Lounge doesn't just make great cocktails. It reminds you why cocktails matter in the first place. And that's why it's my favorite. read more

I wanted to celebrate something special, so I was looking for a nice bar when someone recommended this place. From the outside, it looks pretty unassuming, so I wasn't expecting much. But as soon as I walked in, I was pleasantly surprised. The interior is beautiful, with a stylish central bar that immediately catches your eye. Although they do serve food, I wasn't very hungry, so I decided to just enjoy a couple of drinks. There are a few dining tables inside if you're planning to have a meal as well.The bartender was incredibly friendly and took the time to chat with me after I asked for a few recommendations. The drinks were excellent, well-balanced, flavorful, and actually tasted like proper cocktails instead of just juice. They definitely didn't skimp on the alcohol either! Took me a long time to try this place because I go for more local places nearby. But if you're in the downtown area, this is an excellent cocktail bar. The server was very friendly knowledgeable, providing recommendations and substitution. I tried the seasonal cocktail Pink Moon and it was sweet and refreshing with little bits of boba. Interesting. i also tried the Late Check Out. Also very good but more balanced. I think you can't go wrong with any of their cocktails. Service was absolutely terrible. Came with a group of 7 for a friend's birthday. We were seated quickly. Drink menu was descent. Took awhile for our drinks to come, about 20 minutes. After delivering our drinks, service went downhill. The waiter came over once but only to the other side of the table. I tried to get his attention but he was gone. I was debating going up to the bar as it was crowded and didn't want to have to wait. Our group stayed for close to 90 minutes. I had to the flag the waiter down to get our check, I actually got up and had to follow him and say we're ready for the check. For our group of 7, he brought one check and said it could only be split between 3 cards. Again, waiter was gone before we could ask him to split the check up. When he did come back, almost 10 minutes later, we we're ready to go. It took another 10min to run our cards. I understand that it was a busy night, at least up at the bar. The downstairs room didn't have many people so perhaps they were short staffed. Whatever the case, service was too slow, inconsistent and not frequent enough for me to return. Drinks were ok. First time in Portland and first stop of the night -- I'm glad it was here! The cocktails were descent, the vibe super chill, and everyone I met was friendly and easygoing. Classy bar in Downtown Portland! I visited this bar on a Saturday night and most of the seats were taken, but my group was lucky and we got a table for 4 immediately. Walking-in, the interior was vibey and classy with the dim lights and the projector playing some films. There's outdoor seating and bar seating in addition to the table seating. The bar itself is located in the middle of the room and the bar tenders look like they have good technique when making the drinks. I ordered the Dream Weaver Cocktail and it was delicious. I mainly got it for my love of the pandan flavor. While I couldn't taste too much pandan flavor in the cocktail, the drink was overall good and easy to drink. It didn't taste like poison and was not too sweet. It was strong too which I liked. Despite its smaller size, I did feel a bit tipsy from the drink. It was also only $13 which was a good deal for a cocktail. The service was also good as our server was patient while we were indecisive with the menu. Definitely a plus. While the Jersey Girl caught my attention - well because, I'm a Jersey Girl - the ingredients were not my palette. Even though it was late, I opted for an espresso martini, knowing I'd pay the price. Their version is so delicious, I went for it. Just as smooth as I remembered. Everyone in my group ordered something different, and everyone raved about their drink. You just can't go wrong here. The bartenders are expert in their craft. As ever, fine offerings, congested ambiance, so-so service. That said, a recent visit changed my feelings on that last category. A guest with another party that joined mine was cut off and, seemingly by her own discretion, the server said she'd stop serving the entire group. After taking all of our orders and leaving us to wait for drinks that were clearly never coming to begin with. FWIW, it was the right (albeit cautious) call with respect to the one individual. However, without disputing their prerogative to make it, not the right call for the group. We'd all been well-behaved, tucked in a corner with no one to disturb. Even the person cut off was simply tipsy - not rude, not loud, not particularly at risk. It strains credulity that 9 people would be denied business because one of them was a smidge out past her skis. The rationale must have been either something less than objective, or a rather overly vigilant policy. Anyway, they don't need my business and they're not getting it again either. read more

I was interested in visiting Teardrop based mostly on the way they organize their cocktail list, i.e., by category/type of drink. That type of organization, for me, compares favorably to other bars I've visited in the past, most notably the now defunct Pouring Ribbons in NYC. This is made even easier with the grid at the back of the cocktail booklet. The interior of the lounge is bright and fun, but we sat outside solely because the music inside is way too loud and prevents good conversation. Luckily it was a warm spring afternoon to take advantage of their outdoor seating. If that hadn't been available, we very likely would have passed on ordering drinks here. The drinks we did order certainly fit into the "Ooh, interesting" mold. One other interesting thing I noticed is that a significant number of the drinks come without a garnish, which is unusual compared to drinks I've ordered in a lot of other places... not a ding, just an observation. This is certainly a place you should consider if you want a cocktail that isn't necessarily mainstream or conventional. read more

The service was amazing - the waitress was so kind and patient. Their extensive drink menu is a lot to navigate and she gave us lots of tips. She also offered to make us a cocktail just based on descriptions which I ended up doing, and I was pleasantly surprised. It took me awhile but I finally made it to the only Portland entry on the 2022 North America's 50 Best Bars list. Clayton the bartender was knowledgeable and very friendly. The layout is very aesthetically pleasing, a positive vibe all around. Loved my Doomsday Device which includes hot honey. I look forward to trying the complex Search For Delicious. I was mixed on the Nachos: it's good eye candy. But like most Nacho entrees, it's diminishing returns after the top layer. Moreover, I just didn't connect with the smoked cheese wizzy-like cheddar. The pork belly mind you was succulent and plenty. Do know if you push a plate of it my way I will still gladly consume it. Prices are in-line for the creativity and ambiance.
