The Sapphire Hotel is no longer a hotel. It was in the early 1900s... And you could say the guests at that time were a little shady (let's just say some rooms were rented by the hour). The restaurant is what used to be the lobby. It is known for being dimly lit, a little romantic, a little old school. They are open late when not a lot of other places around are, which is how I ended up here after another event. They have happy hour from 4-6pm and then a late night happy hour after 10pm. The building could use some love from its landlord. The toilet was leaking, there's asbestos wrapped pipes visible on the ceiling. We got: Soup du jour House salad Meze platter Kettle chips Spicy chicken sandwich Everything tasted great. I was pleasantly surprised with the portion sizes for the happy hour items. I would definitely keep this in mind for date night or as a late night spot when not much else is open. read more

Wow, what a cool space. We snuggled up near the fireplace for a cozy drink and some food. The drinks are delish. We also had wings, the burger, polenta fries and the crème brûlée. Impeccable. One of the last gasps of "Old Portland" when SE bars were dark, pointed, subscribed to witchcraft, and climactically tasty. Ceilings larger than life. Servers who must all be libras due to their homeyness--slash--poignant versatility that offsets feeble-minded Portland bartender ego and impatience. (REAL Kindness, you know...*tears up*). The happy hour is really special. Get a gin and egg white cocktail for $6-8! I moved away from PDX, but Sapphire is the first spot I'd return to. (I probably won't return to PDX.) It's sort of like if Rimsky-Korsakoffee House was a real Portland bar. read more

Ever since I first visited this place many moons ago, I've always had fond memories of it. So whenever I find myself on Hawthorn it's time for my return. Today was the day! I was instantly reminded by how cozy a place this is. They have a wood stove with a few comfy seats. There's plenty of tables for two, outdoor covered seating, and a few nice spots at the bar. Their cocktail menu is very creative. I enjoyed the Lounge Singer (redux) and will have to come back for the Devil's Lettuce and Seasonal Manhattan. The food is also well done and I enjoyed the crab cakes and Sapphire Chicken salad. They also have several tempting desserts that I'll need to come back for. Service was also kind and attentive. Ok. First thing is first. I didn't drink all of these by myself. Second, this 5 star is based solely on their drinks as my friends and I only went here for happy hour. However, I've heard their food is also fantastic. It was a nice day out, so we were able to sit outside. Even in poorer weather, the outdoor seating is both covered and has gas heaters to keep warm. The cocktails. They were so good. They were presented beautifully, they were creative, and most importantly they tasted good. Our server was awesome; she was the perfect balance of attentive but not "hover-y" (yep, I just made up that word). We sat outside because we had a rare, nice 2023 day but the inside has so much character and charm! I will definitely be returning here because there are still drinks on the drink menu I'd like to try. read more

I hadn't been in to Sapphire in at least 15 years, and I didn't know what it would be like. It's almost criminal - I live just 12 blocks away, and yet never came in for a bite. In fact, I actively avoided coming in. What a stupid, 14 year loss to my life! Then I had a very hard day at work (hard on my colleague, which always hurts more than if it was me), and all I could think about was a TGIF delicious happy hour drink and snack. I kept using different criteria, but because of where I was working that day, Sapphire Hotel kept coming up. So, although skeptical, I went. I got there with my book (I always carry a book), and asked if they could seat me inside, but by a window for good light. It isn't too dark in there, but dark enough that reading wouldn't have been as much fun. Not that reading lighting is what any bar should aim for! The table they gave me was wonderful, in the small little nook by the front door. I ordered the Marionberry Margarita cocktail, and the Farmer's Platter. But I HAD to make it difficult - I didn't want the huge one, but how was I to choose one cheese with so many options?! My waiter went back to ask and came back to tell me they could do I for the price of an extra cheese. The drink came out, and was so good I had to remind myself to not gulp down every single drop too fast. The platter was gorgeous - stacked with crackers and bread, delicious dried fruits, a few fresh tastes, a sweet spread, roast garlic (that I usually wouldn't have eaten, but smeared on the bread and loved), and a few delicious aged meats. I was too happy to kick myself for not coming sooner. I ran into a friend outside who had been celebrating her mom's birthday, and proceeded to ask them what they loved (there were three of them and they ordered all the starters). Recommending all of them, my list for what to try is too long for just one visit. Guess I will have to come more often! read more

We arrived at 5 on a Friday. Parking was easy to find in residential areas. There was plenty of seating available. I had looked up where to eat that was romantic and good for first dates and I was not disappointed. The vibe is very intimate, the lights are dim, there's a candle on each table. Our server was friendly & she knew when to check in on us. We ordered the Other Woman and Apricot Blonde from the happy hour menu (ends at 6pm), which were both very good. We also ordered the Sapphire Salad (pretty basic, light dressing) and the Salmon Cakes (light, nicely sauced). For our entrees, the Roasted Beet Burger was delicious. We added caramelized onions. I would come back for the burger. The Burro e Pomodoro was a pretty standard tomato sauce pasta. Dessert we ordered the Pumpkin Bread Pudding. The portion was huge! And very decadent. read more

Last week, we experienced a mini Hungry Houseguest Disaster 2024 (TM). You have probably have experienced Hungry Houseguest Disaster yourself at some point in your PDX life. We had hoped to dine at The Observatory in Montavilla. The wait times were super long, alas. Ditto for the other nearby restaurants. So we hopped in the car and headed to the Sapphire Hotel. We hadn't been to the Sapphire Hotel in some 10+ years, but we remembered the place fondly. Would it still have a cheap and wonderful happy hour? Would there be a terrible wait? Was the restaurant still in business? I'm pleased to report that the Sapphire Hotel worked out wonderfully for our needs. PROS: --Our party of five was able to be seated immediately. --The service was friendly and fast. -- The temperature inside was cool and relaxing, even on a 95+ day. --There were food and drink options galore, accommodating all of us, including one guest who is gluten and dairy free. CONS: --The prices had certainly gone up since our last visit, but the food we received was yummy. read more

Sapphire Hotel is known for their cocktails, and with good reason: they are absolutely the crown jewel of their offerings! But do not let that diminish your perception of the quality of their entrees, for they are, for the most part, similarly exceptional. Having been disappointed by an old favorite restaurant, we drove a handful of blocks to try something new. I'd heard good things about the Sapphire before, so I thought we'd give it a shot, and I am very glad we did. Between us, my wife and I each ordered a cocktail a-piece: the Black Truffle martini, and the Bold Friend (w/habanero), respectfully, and split three starters: the Meze, Artichoke & Arugula dip, and the Salmon Cakes. Starting with the cocktails...wow! WOW! Incredible! My wife adored her Black Truffle martini, made with (what we're guessing is) truffle-infused gin, giving it a sultry, extravagant flavor. Pinkies up, folks! As for the Bold Friend, if you put habanero in anything, I am probably going to love it, but when coupled with gin, honey and lemon, you have a spicy sweet winner! My only gripe is that it could have been a bit more "bold" (spicy), but that's my personal taste; if I'm not burning, it leaves me yearning. By far, the best starter was the Artichoke & Arugula dip, crusted with a layer of cheese reminiscent of a Creme Brulee, and served with crunchy, chewy baguette. Man, I could eat that dip straight! An absolute must order, every time. The salmon cakes were warm and tender, breaded and easy to cut with a fork, and the aioli on top, ostensibly an stone ground mustard and onion aioli, carried a decidedly strong dill flavor, of which I have no complaints, since I'm partial to it. As a whole, everything paired wonderfully! Only the Meze was underwhelming, and not because it was inadequate, but simply because it did not rise to the level of everything else we had ordered. It was tasty, and a competent dish by itself, but having had superior offerings at other restaurants recently, and being simply outclassed by the cocktails (gold!), artichoke dip (silver!, but only barely) and salmon cakes (bronze!), left it unfortunately off the platform and out of medal contention. Sapphire Hotel has earned its reputation as a classy, sexy cocktail joint, with the added surprise of having badass food as well. While the menu itself is limited, I'm already eyeballing a couple other cocktails and entrees, and will be working on an angle to talk my wife into returning sooner than later. I anticipate this discussion will require little convincing. read more

What a gorgeous hidden gem! Came here for a date night and was not disappointed by the drinks or the vibe. It's such a sexy, swanky spot and great for chatting and people watching. Our server was so friendly and attentive, and the bartender was even able to accommodate my request to make a hot drink (Bananas Foster-Powell) iced. And WOW -- do not sleep on this cocktail!! Like a tropical, boozy milkshake, super creamy and delicious. Fantastic! I will certainly return to the Sapphire Hotel soon. read more

Writing this review simply because I used to love this place, truly. When I first went with my fiancé (gay marriage), we were enthralled with the atmosphere and decor. Cocktails were great, very memorable experience. However, when she and I (also she) went back this evening, we were met with an almost completely different establishment. The patrons had gained an average of 35 years, and the food and drink was very disappointing. $19 for a wet chicken thigh on a bun with no toppings and french fry scraps on the side. Our table wobbled pretty severely, and when we asked the waitress to help us fix it she immediately said it wasn't really wobbling and suggested we move. My woman's burger was hardly a sandwich, and the salad looked like it had been thrown together by a toddler. My Manhattan certainly transported me to New York... the New York sewer. Dishwater + rye, mmmm, and a cherry straight from the compost heap. My dearly beloved's drink was a salty cilantro mess that immediately triggered her GERD. I know this place can do better. After landing in Portland late in the evening, my friend and I went to Sapphire Hotel to grab a drink to catch up and for me to grab some food. Walking in, we got to seat ourselves and a waitress brought over menus shortly. Drinks: My friend got a Dark & Stormy that she enjoyed. I got the Aquarian which was delicious. They had a lot of speciality drinks that I'd want to try the next time I'm around. Food: I ordered their veggie burger which was made with beets. The burger was good, but a little messy as the patty was falling apart. I got the fries with my burger, and they were delicious. Service: Service was great this evening. Our waitress was quick with the menus and water. She came back a few times to ask how we were doing. Food and drinks came out quickly as well. Great cocktail bar with good food. Outdoor seating during CoViD-19 life. They make great drinks here. Yes, I'm a stereotypical Portland snob about cocktails . When I lived in the Hawthorne area I was a frequent visitor but now that I live further away I think it's even more indicative that this is a good spot and that I love this bar that I drive 30-45 minutes to get here. I highly recommend Sapphire if you like a well made drink and understand that quality takes time. Enjoy! read more

This place was just OK. The best part about it was probably the service, everyone was really friendly and attentive. The food, the artichoke dip was definitely a highlight, we would definitely get that again. Everything else was just OK. Perhaps it was just an off day in the kitchen?? Again, the thing that really save this place was the friendly service. They will ask for your Covid vaccine at the door otherwise you're invited to sit outside where they have heaters. My favorite veggie burger in Portland. The flavor of the roasted beets, black beans, brown rice and cashews makes for such a delicious patty. The potato bun, the aioli, etc. - all of it works so well together. Best of all, there is no soy and it is not "fake meat." I ordered it constantly from Caviar until they discontinued delivery. But the Sapphire Hotel is a great stop for drinks - chill, cool vibes. I had been there a couple times before I even realized how good the food is. The burger also comes with homemade salt & vinegar chips that are awesome - I don't normally like salt & vinegar chips but these are just too good. Also need to note the medjool dates stuffed with almonds and cheese and wrapped with bacon - excellent. And the polenta fries with romesco dipping sauce is out of this world. This place once had such great food, but now it's not worth it. I was really looking forward to the steak I had back in September, but it was terrible - took a couple bites and did not finish it. A coworker/friend told me that this place was a great date spot. So my wife and I checked it out probably right before the pandemic. And we have been consistently going there ever since. Polenta fries!? I mean, if you've never had them, you need to have them. And the sauce it's paired with? Freaking amazing. We've been enjoying salads and splitting the fries lately. But there's so much on the menu that we have enjoyed. The outdoor space is great. All the tables out there are nice and spaced out. Inside it's a little too cozy. In a pre-pandemic world I probably wouldn't mind. But it's a tad too close to other patrons. It's usually pretty busy when we go, so the food does take a minute. This place is one of the very few that feels like "Old Portland." It's got this cozy, witchy bungalow vibe with lighting just dark enough so that you feel like your table is the only one in the room. The cocktails are incroyable. The happy hour runs--even on weekends(!)--so you can get a $10 cocktail for $6. And their cocktails are about as mesmerizing as you would find anywhere in town. But damn, that spinach and artichoke dip with that BREAD, honey. MMMMmmmmMMMM. Now that's what I'm talking about. I LUST for this dish. Also, the chips are good. Fries are solid. All of the food is in the "great" category. Service was really nice! I honestly don't remember servers that often, but the ones here were just friendly enough that it felt like you were friends of an acquaintance at their BBQ or something. I am just obsessed with this spot. I have lived here for almost 7 years and just discovered it about a month ago. It's a small little spot at the tip of Hawthorne that is NOT a hotel but kind of reminds me of a small cozy hotel bar. It's pretty dark and despite how small it is, quite a few tables and bar space. The servers are super attentive and informed of the menu which is helpful when you have cocktail questions. Tons of fun unique cocktails and a few warm ones which is ideal with the cold weather. My favorite cocktail is the not an espresso maritini made with cold brew instead. So delicious. The food is CHEFS KISS! Both time I have come, I shared a bunch of different appetizers with friends. The arugula and artichoke dip is by far my favorite. I don't love cooked spinach so the arugula is a great alternative. The polenta fries are the runner up if not tied for first place. I always grab the nuts and olives but I do that everywhere I go. It has a nice assortment of olives and flavorful almonds. The Brussel sprouts get an honorable mention. Oh what a SEXY space. Came with a group of friends and had a very relaxing evening, just what I needed after a busy weekend. Cocktails ~ Muddled fruits and great liquor. Mixologist knows how to make a drink. I had the "Bold Friend" spicy and packed with flavor. Food~ The Beet Burger was very good and at first I thought this would be sweet but it wasn't, It's very savory and not dry, I added avocado... Get This Artichoke dip was as advertised it's good for two people, so if you are sharing get two orders. ( kinda small) Get This Sapphire Burger with the brioche bun. This was very good ! I had Two bites before my friend snatched it from my "cold dead hands" LOL Get This. Service~ Attentive but not overbearing. My water never hit the bottom of the glass.
