First time stopping in. We expected to leave with a couple lattes, and we did...but also with 5 Christmas ornaments. Unexpected by all means! They've just randomly got multiple shelves of a unique mix of older Hallmark ornaments. The sign said last years, but they seemed older to me. This is a perfect place to stop through The Dalles for coffee and fuel (next door). I've been here several times passing through between Salem and Idaho and have never had an unpleasant experience. The Holstein's staff, no matter who has been working, always greets me with a smile and a quick hello, even when they are busy helping others before me. They offer several excellent choices for the coffee lover, and no matter what my choice of the day is, it's always been well made. I love that when I ask for extra hot, it's actually extra hot. I need this or I'll drink it away before I leave the parking lot! There is a drive through on the west side of the building if you prefer not to exit the vehicle, but there is plenty of parking around if you need to get out and stretch your legs. read more

I consider myself to be a coffee enthusiast. I judge coffee many different ways. Having been a barista I do have a little bit of a clue. When traveling I normally order a blended mocha. Coffee here is okay, definitely not the best but definitely not the worst. The girls working the drive through were very nice. Considering I about choked when I pulled up to the window and they told me it would be almost $18 for 2 - 16oz blended mocha's. Are you kidding me ? $9 for one with coconut milk and $8 for regular both with out whip! I realize prices have gone up and this is a small town but that's ridiculous! Will be frank the manager at the time was Leslie she is a sweetheart a good heart and extremely chill and fun person if I ever manage to see her again I'll probably smile but her a drink and if she is feeling chill catch up. The owners on the other hand dear God the man is a miserable person he talks in such a way like he is absolutely hating his life didn't think of how until I met his wife a short woman with glasses and now I understand why. This place is usually amazing, but the blond that worked there today was extremely rude. My first really negative experience in years.

I never go to Holstein's but decided to stop by one day for a lemonade. Let's just say, I'm going to keep avoiding the place. I stopped by for a 20oz lemonade and received a 16oz, while still being charged for 20oz. The blonde girl at the window looked at me, laughed, and had her co-worker deal with me. She could still be heard giggling in the background. I didn't like that crap in high school and I don't like it now. I'll keep getting my daily grind elsewhere. read more

This is disappointing . We've been stopping here for a couple years on our way through. It's always been a nice place. Today though, there was a older man running the machine. He was very unfriendly and unkind. The man in front of me asked for a little extra cream in his coffee. The man ROLLED HIS EYES! My husband and I then placed our order. It was about $20. As the girl was making my smoothie I said I forgot to add an extra shot. He told me it was too late! So after I got my smoothie I spent $3 for another shot. To add a shot to a drink as an extra is only $1. But I was made to pay the $3. THEN, after my husband put the dog in the car he ran back in to use the restroom. The old man HARRASSED HIM! He implied my husband needed to buy something!! We had already spent $23. We left feeling very sad at the way this man treats people. I was introduced to the Kona Mocha shake many years ago by a friend. Ever since, I have always arranged my travels to go through the Dalles just to partake of this wonderful beverage. Last friday, I stopped and ordered 4 of them, so I could take 3 back to my family about 90 minute drive away. I told the barista of what I wanted to do, gave them a bag, they filled it with ice and helped me put in 3 of the drinks and didn't charge me extra. I have always been very happy with Holstein's and will continue to plan my driving trips to stop by there. read more

Just left this coffee drive through. my family and I love their smoothies and I really like their coffee. However, at this visit the line was slow and we were talking about how the inside lookEd busy and maybe they were short staffed. No big deal. The gal at the window said they put the wrong milk in my coffee- I would have drank it but she was in a hurry and whisk it away with an eye roll before I could tell her. she brought the new one and my husband said " looks like you're really slammed!" - trying to be sympathetic. The lady said " yeah and I'm 4 employees short" before either of us could sympathiz, she said "bye" with a scowl and literally SLAMMED the drive through window. We will not be back- EVER. read more

Delicious coffee. I ordered a ham croissant sandwich and a 12oz Quad americano. The espresso was strong and smooth. It didn't have the bite that most quad americanos of that size would have. I added a little cream and dose of honey to it (not that the coffee needed it) and it was perfect. Quality of drink aside, the owner is quite gregarious and a lifelong resident of the Gorge. He is one of the most life-filled people I have had the pleasure of meeting in The Dalles! I wish the best for the place and recommend it to anyone passing through that wants to enjoy a solid cup of coffee. read more

Stopped by Holstein's for a quick breakfast and pee when driving from northern California to North Carolina. There were vegan options for me, along with vegetarian and omni choices for the rest of my family. I ate some banana-chocolate muesli, then grabbed some locally made vegan treats for the road. They were kind enough to let me fill up all of my water bottles, too. I wish I could have stayed longer - the cafe is stocked with books and board games, along with some large, comfy chairs. However, the last few times I have visited the male owner has been so rude to customers and employees I will never go back! I never leave bad reviews but this owner acted like the customers were inconveniencing him, shouting at them and talking down to people. read more

On our last visit the owner was working and I saw how he treated his employees and I won't go back. I rarely leave negative reviews as I like to give the benefit of the doubt and assume it was just a one time thing. Not sure why this place has such bad ratings. I came here after seeing the sign while stopped for gas. Hungry and desperate for caffeine, this looked like a viable option. Lots of drink options, and the batista did a great job on mine. I'm difficult because I don't like a ton of sugar, but I do like slightly sweet. The two ladies working were also super sweet. It's just okay. The coffee is passible. The service is passible (I feel like I'm intruding on someone's turf, though). If you're a regular it's all smiles and "hey, how are you!" They're not unfriendly, just not "glad you're here" friendly. The acoustics in there are awful - loud! The seating is awful unless you're on the couch. Outdoor seating is hard on the bum, too. The parking lot is shared with a gas station and food mart, and it's a disaster waiting to happen, so drive slowly and look around before you pull out. read more
