We ducked in here on our most recent trip to Hood River as Steve needed to buy some coffee beans for us to have back home when we had our morning coffee. We haven't broken into that yet so I am excited when that happens. We did get a snack here to share and we got a pastry with a lot of Cardamom in it. Now I have had this particular spice in my lattes but I haven't had it in a pastry... at least not like this. It was delicious and simply fantastic. Prices were fair, buy the espresso was terri-bad; if you're not going to be courteous, the least you could do is pull a decent shot. Totally laid back coffee shop with a surprisingly large and open space. I'm used to coffee shops with lots of small intimate seating areas. Dog River is open and spacious with tables along the wall And a few along the window for people watching. best seats are right out on the sidewalk when weather permits. Their chai is fabulous, really hits the spot any time of the day! Also love their iced coffee drinks. They have pastries from local bakeries, as do most of the coffee shops, and they are all good. Last time I tried the zucchini bread and it was moist and delicious. Large slice that provided me with breakfast for two days! Love this cute little place! All I drink is a black Americano so I'm not hard to please but the staff is very friendly and they already remember me and what I order after only two days in a row. I can tell by their interactions with other customers that it's a popular place where locals feel comfortable and welcome. Seeing as I knew nothing about coffee, I didn't expect it to be so bitter, but after I started drinking for a little bit, it kind of grew on me. The inside of this shop is very spacious and clean with a pretty warm decor. There are three nice tables by the large windows up front for people watching. I ordered a lavender latte. They make their own syrups here. It wasn't too sweet, perfectly balanced flavors. Staff were very sweet and asked about your day/where are you from. A very nice place with great product. Coffee is mediocre. At least it was reasonably priced... The owner thinks he can run a 10 table restaurant, the cash register, cook food, do dishes, and make coffee without any help on a beautiful, sunny, summer Saturday so don't stop in for a quick drink. There were four groups in front of me when I got in line, roughly 10 people, and it took just over 25 minutes to get my espresso! The owner had the nerve to say there is nothing he can do about the 25 minute wait. read more

A small variety of pastries, scones, bagels and quiche. We tried a few and all were decent. Black Coffee offering uninspired and other drinks as expected. Big space with plenty of seating, but generally empty of patrons. Average coffee shop at best, but it was the service that suffers. It's a bit manic. The interaction ranges from happy to see you, to apathetic to annoyed to be there. Getting the coffee and food right is expected, it's the service that makes you feel warm and welcome that sets a cafe apart. Perhaps that explains the lack of patrons compared to the cafe on the other end of the strip we saw with a bustle of customers before choosing Dog River because it seemed we could more easily find a place to sit. read more

First time back in four years. I'm a fan of their premade/homemade breakfast burritos. They're decent size - not gigantic like you'd find at a Mexican cart - and come with so-so salsa. The cold brew spritzer (they add soda water) is a refreshing creation. The owner is very nice. read more

I can't get over the furniture. If you miss the 70s and wonder where all that yellow and rust colored polyester and vinyl furniture went, you can walk down memory lane in their lounge. Or you can just visit for the Stumptown coffee. Your choice. If I had my laptop and wanted to work, then this is probably the best option in town. The most spacious coffee house with lots of tables and a fair number of outlets. In the back, the lounge provides some good conversation areas and the amusing furniture. I have to say that I get enough Stumptown in Portland, so my favorite thing on the menu is their lavender lemonade during the summer. A really refreshing alternative to my afternoon coffee. Ground puts it all together for me, but Dog River is a very good second choice. read more

Been here three times over the years since I first came across DRCC. I was out one day visiting Hood River and was in the mood for a pick-me-up. Dog River was the one that jumped out at me due to its laid back nature and cozy, easy going atmosphere. I used to only go to a certain popular coffee corporation as I didn`t think any place else would be able to make a decent Chai Latte; DRCC topped cryptically mentioned coffee corporations` version and had me wondering what else they had to offer. Few years later the second time around wasn`t disappointing; still a great Chai Latte and the same friendly, come-as-you-are, take a seat and take a load off atmosphere was still present and blooming in full effect. Friendly service, great Chai (All I order basically), and a tasty pastry a friend and I split between the two of us. Didn`t know when I`d be back but I was hoping when I did time wouldn`t change it and things would still be the same. Well, almost two years went by since my last visit and I found myself heading up to Hood River recently; this time with my girlfriend and her mother this past Saturday. I mention DRCC and we all go in for a wake up call and something for the three of us to share and enjoy. One Chai Latte, two ice coffees, and a Banana/Chocolate cake slice later and we`re all sipping and snacking away with pleasure. Nothing had changed, I`m very happy to say, and when we left DRCC had two new converts thanks to what I`ve been pointing out in this review. If you visit Hood River then definitely visit DRCC as I`m sure you won`t be disappointed. The staff are friendly, the Chai is delicious, and the Banana/Chocolate cake is wonderful. Time and money well spent as far as I`m concerned and I think you will too. read more

The older guy operating the counter was in a sour mood. He tossed the pen across the counter for me to sign the receipt. I had asked for a no foam latte. He made it with foam. I asked for a spoon to scoop out the foam, he tossed me a spoon, when I asked where I should dump the foam, he just grabbed the drink and said, 'it's not very much foam' and poured it out to make again. I chose to stop here for an americano on the way out of town instead of Starbucks because I always prefer to try a local coffee shop. I ended up tossing it after a few sips and going to Starbucks down the road. It was made quickly, which was the first sign that it might have been bad. The little bit of flavor it did have was quite bitter. I only gave it a second star because the ambiance seemed nice (as did the people). But I definitely prefer to wait for a good cup of coffee than have a bad one delivered quickly. I will try a different coffee shop next time I'm in town. read more

Went here for refreshments. Got cookies and a big cup of hot coco. This is a nice place to meet up with friends. The place is on the hipster side but it's one of the reasons as to why I like it. Absolutely the worst coffee I've ever had. I asked for my coffee extra extra hot (I even said 200 degrees please) she handed me a Luke warm at best coffee. I asked if it could be made hotter at which time she said "well I'll just make you another one then" to which I asked if she could just throw it in the microwave (I hadn't done anything but touch the cup" she pulled it away and proceeded to make another one. Which she handed to me cooler than the first cup. It was half a cup of pure foam at barely room temperature. I left it on the table and left. We had to try this place since it was rated the "Best Coffee House" in USA today newspaper. Was I disappointed?....Nope. It's a great coffee house. The staff is friendly, quick, patient, and knowledgeable. They use Stumptown coffee for most of their drinks. My wife had a regular coffee and I had an Americano. Both drinks were not scalding hot and had a good taste to it. Lots of people have caught onto this coffee house in Hood River, so expect a line during most hours. I'll be coming back again, if nothing, for the coffee and laid back atmosphere of the place. read more
